Shame that there's never been a proper M version of the Z4 since the E89.
I had one and did the same thing. Pulled the handle right off with a hard shift. :)

I know that I keep harping on about it but the Alpina Roadster S is a much better car. It may have 20 bhp less BUT it weighs over 155kgs less,. It has much better suspension and a better gear box, all of which makes it a much better car. Oh! and did I mention the bored out hand built engine with racing pistons and cams and the hand stitched interior trim and and and and and .......................................................
How come the Alpina is lighter? And why are the gearbox and suspension better?
