SHOULD YOU BUY A BMW Z4M COUPE?

  • In this video. I get to have a go in a BMW Z4 M Coupe. When it came out over a decade ago, it never got the recognition it deserved. Partly because it was pricey and didn't quite have the interest. Now at the thick end of 2018 - they have become a bit of a future classic.
    So, should you buy a Z4M coupe? Watch the vid to find out.
    Enjoy.

      @@PapatsoMopaka I had it for 16 months, the running costs can be very high. I had a lot of parts needing to be replaced that you would expect on a car hitting 100,000 miles.
      The biggest issue is making sure to look after the S54 correctly, which means not following the BMW service intervals, but doing about 75% of the milage they state.
      I had to do the rotars/discs and pads. I had a lot of bushings with the suspension requiring replacement.
      When I was putting the roof back up, my passenger got out and it made the system fail completely and trying to get that sorted is expensive.
      I had to replace the rear brake lines, but that's very much a UK type of problem due to how we grit/salt the roads so much over here.

    I’ve driven this car and it’s is every bit as good as sid says,having a weekend toy isn’t about practicality so buying an e46 because they are similar money is irrelevant when it’s a toy.this is a better drivers car then an e46 all day long! S2000 is only fast in the right hands , not everyone know or can drive them on the toes and if you do you then get the whole philosophy behind them . Its a magnificent little car that is fun to drive , but if you're looking for outright straight line power , its not the car for you . M3 , Z4M is a class above of S2K so shouldn't be compared really imo . Im fortunate to own and drive S2K , M3 and ESS Z4 on track and can tell you , they're all great in their own right . Very different to each other in character and depending on track , theyre better at something to each other . Courses for horses and all....

    Thanks for the awesome video! I've got a Z4M roadster. Had a steep learning curve coz it has been 15 years since I drove a manual. Stalled a couple of times at the beginning... but never regretted this purchase. I find it funny that other big brands are charging sky high prices for limited runs of cars that are 'back to basics', 'driver focused', 'raw', 'don't have much sound insulation to reduce weight', 'manual transmission'. Can't help but have this knowing smile coz I've got this in my garage, does all kinds of awesome and it doesn't break the bank.

    Your review is right on! I searched for one two years ago for over 9 months and then a 20000km z4m coupe became available. Raucous,analog, and a challenge to drive and I love it. The low seating position and the torsional rigidity really makes me curious to see how it compares to the E46 M3 CSL. Residing in a country where warm weather is the norm, most part of the year...I would always buy the roadster version, I think they look sexier with the added bonus of transforming into a differt car at the touch of a button and last and in this case more importantly, you get to enjoy every frequency of that sweet engine note. I was always curious why the coupe is held at more regard than the convertible, it cannot only be rigidity and weight, after all you would only track the car like .1 percent of the time, the remaining 99.9 percent you are taking back roads, canyons, coast roads and tunnels. So as far as enjoyment factor comes in, the Topless keeps intriguing. Any comments?

      @blademanx 5 років тому

      Answer is each to their own. This looks lighter. I think V6 sound with right exhaust sounds better. Nismo turns more heads as more rare. But probably not as quick as the Z4M. My area is full of bmw, mercedes, audi. So personally I would pick the Nismo. This is older and more raw. 370z is more refined. Z4M holds better value as its hit bottom depreciation and is back on the rise.

    Did you say it‘s as fast as a tuned M140i? It‘s rather comparable to a stock M140i in acceleration, don‘t you think? But I agree with you you don‘t buy this for the acceleration!

    I test drove one yesterday. What a car! Something to consider, the cockpit is very snug fitting, like you get tucked in. I am not a big guy either so the cockpit will feel small to most people.
    Very stiff, you don't notice any roll whatsoever even with OEM suspension. Best feeling ever.
    And then there's the Noise from the engine...

    One of the best sound engines Ever! This is such a great car.. was lucky enough to drive one and they are great experiences....in my country not less then 40.000 Euros. Great Mods on the car, bringing all the music this S54 can deliver out! Great Review as always! Thumbs Up!

    I sold my 2017 S3 and got a mint, low mileage z4m roadster. Do I regret it? No! Perfect weekend car and gives me disproportionate smiles per mile! It actually pulls the heart strings.... something you won’t get until you’ve driven one. It’s a keeper for sure!

      Like someone else noted, stock staggered tire sizes provokes greater understeer to save the driver. Perhaps you are meaning to reference oversteer, which is easy to encounter with DSC off. As someone who races a Z4M Coupe, I always encourage people to work their way up to turning off the traction control systems until you are able to drive smoothly and to their limits with them on. Given the shorter wheelbase of the Z4M Coupe compared to an E46 M3, rotation comes in quicker and needs to be anticipated. Hope this helps!

      @andyp8464 5 років тому

      @@g35mr2 I guess though in stock form including suspension set up etc you will not get the car that sideway Sid was driving which is important to note. From memory,, the brakes left something to be desired and it really struggled on roads that weren't perfect. The steering feel wasn't ideal too. my friend dumped it for something else as a result.
      I don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm for this car which is super quick. one of my friends has an M3 CSL and this car is probably quicker than it but unlike the CSL , this car doesn't deliver in some areas out of the box (stock) and people ought to be aware of that

    • @g35mr2
      @g35mr2 5 років тому +2

      @@andyp8464 Fair enough and I do agree with you on the second part. Out of the box, the Z4M Coupe leaves a little on the table. This review is consistent with some others - in addition to my personal experience - that with a little tweaking, it is a phenomenal car and feels more at home on a roadcourse then street.
      I almost wonder if BMW knew this but did not see the ROI with such a limited run? This is, after all, a parts-bin car haha.
      As for the brakes, they catch a lot of flak from folks that have never pushed them to the limit. On track with SS lines, fresh 600 fluid and track pads, they can take serious abuse lap after lap. Add cooling to the front and even better pad wear. Also, the steering rack on the Z4M Coupe is one of the best BMW has ever developed, but that is just my personal opinion.

  • @subes5873

    Ive always liked the Z4M coupe, the rear end looks awesome M6 same design. Of course it's 50/50 I hear a lot say they hate them.
    May have to find a deal somewhere, they don't seem to come around to often tho.
    Currently have a 2011 E92 M3 frozen black edition, which I'd not get rid of, must save some pennies and keep a look out for sure.

    Excellent review, pretty much spot on. I've had mine for nearly 4 years and don't think I'll ever sell it (made that mistake with a CSL). One the great things about the Z4MC is that you'll very rarely see another on the road.....which I guess makes it's that bit cooler.

  • @NickG24
    @NickG24 5 років тому

    I had an e46 M3, absolutely loved the engine, and the way it drove actually but always wondered how it would be in a Z4M. The pace must be great and the interior was somewhat updated compared to the e46. I personally think it would be better in roadster form. Yes I know the coupe is stiffer and probably drives better but the z4 is supposed to be a convertible, and the engine will sound even more epic with the roof down. Roadsters sometimes have a slightly girly reputation but they do add to the experience - of course given the right weather which unfortunately we don’t get much of.

  • @EdwardV20

    It sounds absolutely phenomenal! If someone who doesn't know a thing about cars saw this today, they would think it is a new model, definitely from the back. You hit the nail on the head with the comparison to the Z8 in terms of how well it aged... It's a unique package and a very nice shape too.

    Owned one of these for a few years. Fun car. Left it for a 135i. Not sure if that was a good or bad decision. The suspension was pretty tough, I have to say. Current car is a Porsche GT4 and the suspension on it is far more forgiving than my old Z4 MC.
