The most terrifying thing I've ever heard someone say about Stalin came from his own daughter. She said that when she was a kid people she knew and loved kept disappearing. Maids nurses cooks guards that lived with her in one of her dads mansions all would just one day be gone and she never knew what happened to them. Leaders like Stalin and Hitler knew how to exploit us. The terror was such as no one even thought of killing Mao. Hitler had an almost unreal luck when he survived his officers attempt. They were however a minority among the officers in the Wehrmacht, because Hitler was clever enough to have them swear to him personally, so an attack on him was an attack on Germany. The terror itself was enough to keep most people from attempting protests and uprisings and when it happened, it was cut down with extraordinary cruelty and sadism.
