    If it means saving money and resources to get back on your feet, it doesn't hurt to move back in with your parents. However, we as adults should always strive for independence and self-reliance.

      @Johnny Five So true. Been there, done that, got the badge. You are absolutely correct, Johnny. I got fleeced for tens of thousands of dollars between attorney fees, mediation and the injustice system. Lost part of my retirement to a person who was unfaithful, committed perjury and falsified documents to the court, had 3x more income, investments, cash and net worth than me. Set me back many years, financially. NEVER again!

    As a Father of two grown boys 27 and a 28 year old, they both are independent, one is married, and one lives with his girlfriend. If they got divorced or separated, and had no place to go. I would definitely let them stay at my house, just to get back on track. I don't see anything wrong with that,as long as they works hard to get their life back on track.

      Funny thing is when going through a divorce people don't realize you can't get a mortgage. I had 20% to put down, 800 credit score, and was looking to buy a house that was equal to 11 months of pay, and they would not approve me. Even on something that cheap.

    I never bought in to the taboo of living with parents after 18. I’m 32, and moved in with my parents after I broke up with my gf. It’s been great living/reconnecting with them. I’d rather pay them rent than some slumlord or some corporation.

    • @PineappledoesnotbelongonPizza2
      @PineappledoesnotbelongonPizza2 4 роки тому +2

      It's not a taboo. It's a decent principle. Unless you are completely out of options a man over the age of 18 shouldn't even consider moving back in with his parents. It just isn't a proper thing to do.

    • @SSBMA1994
      @SSBMA1994 4 роки тому +11

      True, Id rather pay my parents as well.
      But I do dislike many kids feeling entitled, unappreciative, and calculative with their parents. I see that a lot as well.
      Like kids who don't pay rent, or kids who pay the minimal amount of rent but act arrogant like they own the house now or just because they pay the minimum rent, the parents become forced unpaid babysitter for their babies ..... and many more☹🧐
      I pay my parents monthly, not rent, just a small sign of gratitude for their care and my upbringing. If Im in a situation where I have to rent, I would pay them rent money and a little side money and do housework. But thats just me

      Claming that it is not "decent" or "proper" are not arguments. It can give you a huge advantage to share expenses with your parents. You can use that to leverage yourself into a much better job or business. Just thank God that you still have parents around.

      Robert Cleft u said move back in so I guess u r ok with kids staying with their parents after 18 if they haven’t moved out yet. Moving back in although yes obviously it is not ideal, things happen in life and honestly if it makes it easier to fully get back on your feet I’m for it. Look at his example, he has aches and pains and just got divorced bc she was probably messing around with other dudes which is not his fault. Yes did he make some bad decisions. Most definitely, the car, the biggest mistake I think he made was getting married so young at 22, that is way to young to get married. But regardless his situation was bad and moving back with his parents will help him to get on his feet quicker

    Really feel for this story. Separated from my husband a little over a year ago after 12 years of marriage. He developed a relationship with a co-worker. I kept our apartment until the end of our lease and just moved myself and our 12 year old son in with my parents to save money. I took on all our debt of $38,000. Don’t get child support, just some money here and there when I push for it. Was heartbroken and extremely sad for my son but this has been a true wake up call that we weren’t handling our money right and he did not have any plans to do so anyway. Thankful for my parents and look forward to getting back on my feet! Good luck to you and God bless!

      Very sad story. Good thing you could lean on your very generous and helpful parents! I seriously hope you and your son are doing fine. It's fine if you don't want to answer, and I understand, but why didn't you ask for child support? And why did you take on all the debt?

    • @naturally_nikki
      @naturally_nikki 4 роки тому +6

      Richard Forester We are much better now but my son has had a hard time with the separation. Most of the debt is my student loans. The rest is credit card debt that I just want to get paid off asap and don’t want to wait on him for money. As for the child support, he barely sees our son now and I’m afraid that if I file he will have nothing to do with him out of spite.

Dave preaches this a lot and so does Society that pretty much as soon as your 18 you basically need to be gone from the parents house bc your an “adult” technically speaking in the eyes of the law but really your still very much young. I really like the financial advice that Dave gives, but what does the reason for the divorce have to do with anything? A divorce is a divorce and a divorce. No point in asking why as the guy had a very clear question for Dave. I understand the need for clarifying questions, but the reason for divorce has no relevance to this scenario. When Dave asked him that you could almost here the sigh before he answered.

    Some people value independence and define their self-worth by how much they’ve suffered and gained on their own. Others value the bonds they have, and would rather stay with and help support family. Not being as independent as what some random person says you should be doesn’t mean you’re codependent if you return to the nest, especially if you’ve gone through hardship. Some men leave the nest and jump right into marriage and move in with a woman, never experiencing independence anyway. Some people learn more about independence under their parents’ roof than under their own roof themselves or with a narcissist.

      Mine isn’t paid off right now, but I could easily pay it off cash from my savings account (other bank) and still have an emergency fund, but not as large as comfortable.
      I’m working from home and seems probable my job is safe, but I’ve been burned before, so I assume I need to expect bad things to happen. What I owe on it is about what I make gross in a month before paying into 401k and everything else, and closer to his guaranteed income per year: I was shocked to hear how he could be on disability for serving and getting only $630 a month! If I get laid off in Washington state with my current income, I get more than that per week for unemployment. I don’t see how there’s any viable alternative than to move back in with his parents while still dealing with that debt, unless he somehow pulls a magic rabbit out of a hat and gets a job (in this economy and the pandemic!) that pays rather well. I never had that much car debt-to-income ratio as he’s got.
      The worst thing about that much debt for something that’s also expensive to run is it wears out and depreciates just by existing, and if he thinks he”s upside-down now, it only gets worse the older it gets with that amount of debt.
