UPDATED VIDEO HERE: ua-cam.com/video/ztGRrzajZ9o/v-deo.html 🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺🔺 *WARNING* Back up Roms folder and bios(/Retroarch/.retroarch/system) from stock SD card if you are going to use it for this install. If you don't do this you will lose the Roms that came with the device. If you lost or need a copy of the Stock SD card search "Miyoo Mini Plus Stock SD card" on Internet Archive to find backups people have uploaded. Update: Onion OS 4.2.3 recently came out and I would suggest using that one as of now. In the future download the latest version or if you already have it installed you can use the OTA update app on the device to update it. If you need help with the OTA update I have a video walking through the process.
@@PhyrexTechs At the start, did you just plug in the named sd card so it picked up the miyoo mini plus folders and they would be accessible in the folders?
@endermouse8094 Yeah, you will need to put the SD card into an SD card reader. If you are going to install onion OS on the stock SD card you can pull the roms and bios from the card to your computer before formatting it. If you are going to install Onion OS on another SD card (not the stock SD card) you can pull the roms and bios from the stock card then take it out of the reader and put the other SD card in format it and add the roms to that one after installing onion OS. I hope this answers your question. If not please let me know.
Huge thank you!!!!! I thought I bricked my Miyoo Mini, but this guide was perfect! Had to reformat and start over, but this guide helped every step of the way.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I was watching some other tutorials, but they took way more time then this one and they didn’t show wich firmware is compatible and which not. You also explained every single step very good and I had no problems following your guide. Again thank you for making this so easy ❤
It takes about 10 - 15 min. Most of that is waiting for the transferring of files to the SD card or Onion OS install process. Might take longer if you have a lot of roms to move over.
Best guide ever ! Just a small suggestion, please also post or mention where we can get a ROM collection. I had to search the web for a couple of minutes before finding some archive ROM collections. Keep up the good work !
Probably too short for a video and want to avoid showing people how to download roms. However If you Google it you should be able to find the archive. org link for it. From there you just want to click the link on the right called zip. Then depending on how large your SD card is pick the option you want to download and then drag all the files onto your SD card after you have finished the onion installation. Hope that helps. If not, feel free to ask any questions.
I lost everything bc I forgot to backup. I didn’t read the description:/ Anyway I found the ROMS and BIOS online and bc of this video, I’m back in business with the newest OOS. Thanks man
I have no idea how to do the backup, I don't even know what the bios and roms are, and my Rufus doesn't allow me to change the formatting part, I'm so lost
If you have a windows computer this is something you could try. github.com/schmurtzm/Onion-Desktop-Tools/blob/main/README.md It should be a lot easier as it is just an application that should walk you through the process.
THANK YOU! I just got one for Christmas. I guess I know what I am doing when I get home from work tonight! Thank you for the awesome, easy to understand instructions!
Hello, did you back up the Roms from the original MM+ prior to any step shown here? If yes, do I simply need to copy the original Roms folder onto my PC before making the software upgrade to Onion, or do I need to back up all the orginal folders? Sorry, I feel like every one got it but me :) Starting at 2:35 from your video you're dropping files from your PC to the MM+. What is the PC folder where you get the files from, is that a back up you made earlier? Thanks for vid! Much appreciated
Yeah, you will just need to back up the roms folder from the stock SD card if you are going to use that one. It's recommended to use a separate SD card so I think most people are doing that.
Those are my personal roms on my PC. You can copy them off of the Stock SD card or you can get them from a collection like "Tiny Best Set Go" or "Done Set"
You can change what the single press power button does. It is located under Apps > Tweaks > Button Shortcuts. Then the setting "Power single press" can be changed from Standby to Shutdown depending on what you want it to do. I like it set to Shutdown.
@@PhyrexTechs Thats what i was saying, but i got used to how the button is when it was stock. Then when you go onion, it is different. Thanks for this, i shared this vid to a friend.
Excellent step by step guide. One question, after you've done the Onion OS install, how easy is it to go back to Miyoo's OS? Is it just reinstalling the old SD card? I'm assuming it's more involved than that.
If you installed Onion OS on a new SD card, You are right to go back to the Stock OS all you have to do is insert the Stock SD card. If you installed Onion OS on the Stock card you will then have to reinstall the Stock OS from a backup.
Thanks, bro ! Perfect video clear and simple straight to the point. Got you a new subscriber 🤣. Cheers from France and live long and prosper with that geeky and retro gaming love. Ps: Need some information for that sticker, asap 😂
Thanks! Glad I could be of help. Here is the link to that sticker www.etsy.com/listing/1215555181/nintendo-gameboy-label-aufkleber-sticker?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details It looks to be sold out at the moment but the setter has a lot of cool stickers and I think other colors are available.
You save files are stored in the Saves/Current profile folder. So unless you are editing that folder or changing the names of your games you should not have any issues. If you do change the name of your games you will have to make sure the save file is the same name as your rom name.
That would be an option as I have done it. It just might take a long time depending on the speed of the SD card and the card reader. The other option is to just install Onion OS from scratch and then move just the roms over again.
Thanks for the great guide. Im new to all this stuff..after installing onion, do i need to change any configuration in settings to make games run better or is it already preconfigured?
Everything should be configured for the most part. If you run into any lag on more demanding games you can check out the video I have on overclocking the Miyoo Mini Plus. Its super simple and has almost no downsides to doing it.
May have already covered this but I’m using the default SD that came supplied with my miyoo mini plus Will I be okay providing I back everything up onto pc?
Yeah the 2 main folders you want to back up are : Roms location = SD Card/Roms Bios location = SD Card/retroarch/.retroarch/system You can also back up the whole thing if you want to be able to go back to the stock OS. Just a fair warning that the stock SD cards are not great quality and might fail at some point.
Does this offer any preview of the actual games ? Or any of this systems... Ive noticed that powkiddy offers a brief video of each one while scrolling the library however my Miyoo does only show the Game box which sometimes is not very helpfull since you have 3000 games and no clue of what is what.
That is a cool feature, but the Miyoo does not support it that I know of. I tend to only have a small list of roms and add more as I need to not have that overwhelming big list.
Can you explain the ps1 bios part please? Once you put the sd card back in the computer the second time, where do you go to find the bios to copy in the ps1 folder?
If you have not formatted the stock SD card you will find them here on the SD card Bios location = retroarch/.retroarch/system If you have formatted the card you can either check Internet Archive for a backup file of the Miyoo Mini plus stock SD card or check out another video where I go more in-depth about Bios and Roms ua-cam.com/video/PcPJ3h6MIhA/v-deo.html
@@PhyrexTechs I haven't formatted the stock SD, I even copy and pasted it in a backup folder, is there where I can find the bios? Sorry to bother, I'm just really bad at this :(
@@AndreRulzOk Hey, It's no problem. If you look on the SD card or on backup copy you made. You will want to go into the RetroArch then the .retroarch folder. Then inside the system folder. Here all of these files and folders are bios for different systems. You will want to copy or drag and drop them from this folder to the BIOS folder on your Onion OS SD card.
Hey bro I just bought the miyoo mini plus advertised with something like 27k games.. I've never owned an after market handheld before so I never tweaked around with custom os. I'm planning on just using the out of the box os that comes installed with the mm+. If I decide to switch to onion os, will I lose all access to the roms that came pre installed on the mm+? Or can I salvage them from there to the new ssd with the onion os installed
What is really cool about how the MM+ is setup is that the OS's are just installed on the SD cards themselves. So, I would recommend getting a new SD card, installing Onion OS on it and keeping the stock card unchanged. That way you can always just swap back to the stock card and go back to the stock experience. You can copy over all or just some of the roms from the stock card to the new one with Onion OS and it will not affect the stock card. The quality of some of the roms on the stock SD card are somewhat questionable. A lot of people get community packs like Tiny Best Set: Go! that are made specifically for the MM+. Or you if you run into any issues with one you might just have to find a replacement as most of them seem ok.
@@PhyrexTechs alright thanks so much for that. Is the quality of the stock ROMS questionable due to the stock OS perhaps? Or is it solely the result of playing the stock ROMS on Onion OS? I've now seen some videos where you can copy over the roms from the original SD card that comes with the device, together with certain bios files and save states / images.
I'm still new, it's one of those learn as you go along, but as long as I can just copy over all the roms over to the new SD with onion os, I'll work my way from there!
@@Amirichi They are only questionable because we can't know how or where the roms were sourced from. I would say most of the roms on the stock SD card should work fine but you might run into some duds.
If you still have the stock SD card you can just put that back in. If you installed Onion OS on the stock card then the only way to get back, that I know of, is to download a copy of the stock. You can find a copy by searching Miyoo Mini Plus stock SD card of Internet Archive
I goofed up real bad by accidentally deleting the stockSD's files, so had to find the tiny best set. Hoping those downloads work out... But yea I followed all the instructions for rufus and Onion OS but it just goes to the regular Miyoo start up screen? My firmware was one of the checked/acceptable options and I did the rufus and Onion OS installment twice, but no luck, so idk what to do 😕
Make sure you are seeing and dragging over the .temp_update folder. If you can't see this you will have to turn on hidden files. Open File Explorer Select View > Show > Hidden items.
@@mochistar3 Is this using the stock SD card? Either way do you have another SD card you can try? Also just to make sure when formatting with Rufus you are choosing FAT32?
Yeah it sounds like you are doing everything right. I could only suggest trying a different SD card or trying a different Onion OS version then the one you had tried.
Hello thanks for your video. I just ordered my miyoo and the rom titles and games are all in Chinese. Im planning to install onion os and replace all the games. Do i need to copy the Bios to the new SD card?
Yeah, you will want to get a brand-name SD card if possible. Then you can install Onion OS on that. If you don't have your own bios, using the ones from the stock SD card should be fine.
Why the SNEA simulator defaults to 9x 2005? I will never know but about half the games I play with it have sound card issues and it doesn't let you switch unless you're an expert mode and it does not ship with it enabled. When I'm getting at is this guide is invaluable for me being able to actually get the emulators I want on here as default and be able to switch as needed instead of constantly plugging in the SD card to change files up
@@PhyrexTechs Im glad you could read that, I apparently was super tired and could barely string a sentence. TL;DR Snes9x 2005 plus is the default and certain games have inconsistent issues with the sound. Once i got expert going and could test it a bit my issues resolved. I'm sticking with blaming the old emulator that is only default as it doesn't use many resources in comparison to the others available. But of course further testing is needed lol.
I think for me the default SNES core is Beetle Supafaust. I normally stick with default but when I have issues, I just go to the game list menu and it Y on that game and choose a different core. If you have a lot of games having issue I could see the expert mode being easier.
@@PhyrexTechs Yep, that is what it was for me, personally im a snes9x lady but im gonna give the default a go. all i know is the default for stock out of the box was the worst possible version. new fun thing is installing apparently corrupted something and a few games that worked before are now saying they are missing :/. But that is an easy fix of just readding it to the card (i hope!)
Just getting a miyoo mini plus today. Should I replace the version in your video to the most recent version of onion os? I see version 4.2.3 just dropped probably a couple weeks after you made this video. Or should I just use the 4.2 that you recommended?
If where I buy it from it doesn't include any SD card, I just format a new branded one and add the Onion OS then roms of my own collection to it and put it in the device right?
That will be hard for me to answer. If you feel comfortable with all the steps in the video, it should take about 15 min. If you are a little unsure about things It might take 30 min. Maybe someone else might be able to give you a better answer on how long it took them.
Okay so I've gotta ask what is the point to this?? I just ordered the Miyoo mini and see all these comments about the onion I'm a newbie and don't have a clue lol any input would be greatly appreciated ✊️🔥✌️💚
It basically is a better frontend/operating system for the device. It adds new functionality and quality of life features. Such as the Game Switcher which allows you to swap between any recent game at the press of a button and pick up where you left off. Also auto save and load state on shutoff and boot and a lot more. You can check the features page here to see more onionui.github.io/docs/features
No problem! Yeah, I get that. It is can be confusing when getting into something you are unfamiliar with. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
Yeah if you are on Mac you can just use disk utilities. Set Format › MS-DOS (FAT) Set Scheme (if it exists) › Master Boot Record and you should be good.
Getting mine in the mail soon. Looks like an amazing guide to follow! My questions would be what is a good but inexpensive SD card to buy to replace the bad quality one that comes with the device initially? And how can I find all the ROMs for the Pokemon games and other games that I want to get & play? Is there an easy way to just trasnfer all the games/ROMs that come on the initial bad quality SD when purchasing?
I have some links to SD cards in the description of the video you can check out. I would recommend what ever has the best sale or is the cheapest. I also have a video where I go over finding roms ua-cam.com/video/PcPJ3h6MIhA/v-deo.html. You can copy over the Roms and Bios from the Stock SD card (locations shown in video description) by just moving the folders to you computer then moving them onto the new SD card after installing Onion OS.
Hello friend. This is really awesome! Appreciate the work you did for this video. I get my Miyoo Mini + tomorrow and plan on using this guide. One question for a noob like me: I plan on adding the Done Set of ROMS (you can find them on the Miyoo subreddit), would you be able to make a tutorial for it? If not it's ok, Ive read the directions and they seem straightforward however the instructions say to unzip entire large folders of ROMs and other sruff straight to the root of the memory card. Will the ROMs somehow put themselves into the correct folder? That part confuses me a bit. Thanks!
Thanks! I have not tried the Done Set yet, but I have heard good things. If it is setup anything like the Tiny best Set Go then it would be organized into folders that can be dragged and dropped into the root folder. I also have heard good things about the auto setup for the Done Set. github.com/doakyz/done-set-auto-setup If you try it out let me know how it goes. I do plan on making videos for both of these sets in the future however with your device coming tomorrow that won't great help to you. Good luck and let me know if you run into any issue and need help.
@PhyrexTechs awesome thanks man! I'm going to do my best, hopefully don't brick my device. I'm confident about the onion OS installation because of your video, we'll see how everything else goes lol I'll let you know!
What's great is that because everything installs on the SD card it's very forgiving. The chance of bricking a device is extremely low, almost impossible. If you mess something up you can format your SD card and start over.
@PhyrexTechs hey man, everything worked great! I'm currently playing Pokémon Unbound. I followed your video guide then just manually extracted zip files of the Done Set to the root of my SD card and voila! All good. Thanks again for your very helpful installation guide!
Because bios files are copyrighted I am unable to share them. However, there are many places you can get them. Internet archive and also the Rom reddit has some good information on where you can get them.
Hi mate, if I want to use the default SD card that came with my miyoo, can i follow this tutorial without reformatting the SD card? or do I need to reformat the card using rufus in order to install onion?
You will need to format the card in order to install OnionOS. If you choose to do this make sure you get everything you don't want to lose off the SD card first. Like Roms and Bios files. Roms are in the Roms folder and bios are located here(/Retroarch/.retroarch/system)
The locations of the Bios and Rom files on the stock SD card are listed in the video description. If you formatted the Stock SD card you can download a back up of it or a collection like Tiny Best Set Go! from Internet Archive. If you are wanting to get your own Bios/Roms I suggest checking out my Bios and Roms video.
You will need to copy the roms/bios from the Stock SD card. If you are using the stock SD card you can look online for either a digital copy of the SD card or look into something like Tiny Best Set go.
Not sure if Onion OS will fix this exact issue. From my understanding, this is an issue with either the Stock SD card or the Stock Roms that come with the device. You will either want to replace the Stock SD card with a name brand one.Replace the stock Pokemon Roms with your own Roms. Or both for good measure. You could still give it a try to see if it works just make sure to back up any roms and bios files on the stock SD if you are going to use that one.
After more research and testing, that was a misunderstanding on my part. I think the max for FAT32 is 2TB however that would be overkill. So 128, 256gb would be my recommendation. 512 for the extreme library of PS1 games (300+). The only downside would be the time it takes loading the game list may increase with that many games. Thanks for asking I forgot I still had that in the description.
@PhyrexTechs thank you so much, I have empty samsung SD with 256gb, so I was wondering if there is still a need to get a new one with lower space. Can I ask one more question? I am very new in consol games, and I was wondering, which consols would you not recommend adding to miyoo Mini?
Any time! I would add any console that you are curious about, that it supports. It won't support N64 and above so you can cross those out. But everything else runs pretty well on it and is enjoyable. It's still my favorite PS1, GB, and GBC handheld at the moment.
I just got my Miyoo Mini Plus and the SD card is unmounted. Should I reformat it or do I need the stock SD card to work to have access to all the games/are they redownload able after reformatting? Thanks!
It's recommended to not use the stock SD card however if you are going to try it. Make sure to back up the roms by copying the ROMs folder from the stock SD card to your computer.
@@PhyrexTechs the SD card was showing unmounted so I lost access to all the ROMs. I used it for 5 minutes, charged it up and once I turned it back on SD card stopped working. Anyways to access all the stock files online anywhere? I’d hate to have to return it just because of the SD card, the device works perfectly otherwise. Thanks in advance for the help!
You can get a copy of the stock SD card files from Internet Archive if you just search for Stock SD card Miyoo Mini Plus. The Stock SD card are notorious for dying so I would recommend you just get a name brand one.
Most SD card backups I have seen on Internet Archive are full backups of everything that was on the Stock card including ROMs unless they state otherwise.
Yes, If you use the stock SD card, which is not recommended. If you choose to use the stock SD card anyways you will want to backup/copy over your ROMs and Bios from the SD card to your PC so you do not lose those games.
Okay so I just bought a MM+, should be coming in a couple weeks. I got the one with 128gb with preinstalled games. If I want Onion will I need to do this set up? I guess I can just copy everything onto my computer from the pre-installed card for safekeeping.
Yes you would need to follow the setup for Onion OS. Backing up everything work or you could get another 128 SD card for around 10$ and use it for Onion and be able to switch back and forth if you wanted. Both options will work.
Im using a toshiba laptop from 2011. It was recently wiped. I only use it to type up Word documents lol. When i go to github and click the onion os 4.2, the download files dont appear. I think its supposed to be under "assets" but it seems to be stuck loading those links. Am I SOL with this dinosaur laptop?
Oof that is rough. Here is a direct link to the 4.2.3 asset download you can give that a try. github.com/OnionUI/Onion/releases/download/v4.2.3/Onion-v4.2.3.zip
made stupid mistake, didnt back up my SD properly before installing onion from default, and lost all my games/roms. I am not super savvy with downloading files/computer etc. am I screwed? I cant find anywhere where I can redownload games, just trying to get pokemon emerald on my miyoo.
The best options you have are to go to the Internet Archive and search for a Miyoo Mini Stock SD card backup or the Tiny Best Set Go collection. The other option would be to check out my Roms and Bios video.
Yeah, I would recommend using a new SD card for Onion OS. If you plan on using the stock SD card make sure to get everything you want off of it before you move to Onion OS.
If there are any performance improvements they are negligible. The best feature hands down is the game switcher. It utilizes auto save and load states that allow you to switch back and forth between any game quickly almost like alt tabbing between games. Another great thing is when you turn the device off it will save the state and load state when powered back on.
@@suhtangwong So by default when powered off or closing a game it makes a save state incrementally this is what allows the game switcher to work and should not interfere with your manual save states. If you don't like this feature, you can disable it by going to: Apps > RetroArch Settings > Settings > Saving > Turn off "auto save state" and "load state automatically." Back out to the "Settings" menu of Retroarch, then go down to Configuration File > Save Current Configuration. And if you want the MM+ to start at the main menu on every boot: Then go to Apps > Tweaks > System > Startup... and turn off Auto-resume last game.
If you have not formatted the stock SD card you will find them here on the SD card Bios location = retroarch/.retroarch/system If you have formatted the card you can either check Internet Archive for a backup file of the Miyoo Mini plus stock SD card or check out another video where I go more in depth about Bios and Roms ua-cam.com/video/PcPJ3h6MIhA/v-deo.html
I don't mind at all. No, Dreamcast is out of reach of the Miyoo Mini +. Because it does not have a GPU it cannot play N64 and above. I just received the R36S and ordered the RG35XX Plus. I will be doing a video on those sometime soon. They both have GPUs so they could play Dreamcast however I'm not sure of the performance yet.
Yeah, you can use Linux. The main difference in the process would be the formatting of the card. You can use one of these options if your unfamiliar with it. www.golinuxcloud.com/steps-to-format-sd-card-in-linux/
@PhyrexTechs thanks, i have successfully installed onion os on sandisk 128gb. I can't believe it's just that easy. Got one question, how many free size do you recommend that is free on the sd card? My 64gb is almost full with only 200mb left.
It should be fine running pretty full. You will want to have some space so it can write files for saves, states, and boxart. 100mb should be plenty for all that with some buffer.
There is nothing necessarily wrong with it. If it works for you and enjoy it that is fine. However, Onion OS adds a lot of features that are amazing. Things like game switcher or adding ports. A full list can be found here: onionui.github.io/
Quick question So the Miyoo Mini Plus I'm purchasing has its own sd card with games. Is it OK to buy a new sd card to install onion and will I be able to just drop and drag the emulators and roms from the old sd card
You can try the built in chromebook formatting tool. I have not tested it, I'm so not sure it would work. But I think you just open the files app> then right click the SD card> select format device >then see if there is an option for FAT32
If you did not back up the roms from the stock SD card. You will need to acquire them again. On Internet Archive, you can find backups of the stock SD card if you want that or find a collection like Tiny Best Set Go. I also discuss this topic in my video called where to find roms and bios.
Good news for you my friend, you don't need rufus on a Mac. You can format your SD card with the built-in Disk Utilities: Open Application › Utilities › Disk Utilities From the sidebar, select the USB drive Choose Erase from the toolbar Set Format › MS-DOS (FAT) Set Scheme (if it exists) › Master Boot Record Click Erase and wait for the process to finish As for the name brand SD card it's just for reliability. SD cards have a risk of corruption and name branded ones will reduce that chance. You can still try a cheap one and it may work fine for you.
@@PhyrexTechs UPDATE: after everything, ive done it!!! thank you!!! I greatly appreciate this video and your help in the comments about rufus and the SD!!!

wait i am confused, did u format with the stock SD card or another SD card with rufus? i’m planning to use a new branded SD card, but i plugged the stock SD to my card reader first (since i assumed that’s what u did in the video). ik u said to accept the warning message but i didn’t do it cause the word ‘destroyed’ scared me 😂 i don’t want to somehow accidentally delete anything that came with the stock SD, that’s why i wanted to make sure if this was meant for the stock or not. sorry i’m a complete noob, this just flew over my head. i’m quite embarrassed asking this haha
😅hi there please someone help. I’m a mother who just bought this for my son for his birthday. I grew up playing a lot of Super Nintendo games and just Nintendo in general. So does onion os come with all those games? Because the mini miyoo plus I have absolutely has no Mario games except an N64. And a lot of the games it comes with is all in different languages. Please someone guide me in the right direction to find the correct place to download the new software . And also… do I need a pc? I only have a MacBook on hand 🫠.what do I do, where do I go? Thanks guys I appreciate it in advance!
Onion OS does not come with any games. You have a few options. You can copy/backup all the games from the stock SD card Rom folder to your Mac before formatting then move them back when done installing onion OS. You could look into the option of a collection like Tiny Best Set Go or check my latest video as it discusses this topic. You can use a mac and still follow the video. The only thing that you will do differently is when getting to the Rufus step instead of downloading that follow the instructions below. Open Application › Utilities › Disk Utilities From the sidebar, select the USB drive that corresponds with the SD card you want to format Choose to format the root element Choose Erase from the toolbar Set Format › MS-DOS (FAT) Set Scheme (if it exists) › Master Boot Record Click Erase and wait for the process to finish I hope your son enjoys his new birthday present! I bought mine for myself, however my daughter loves to play Kirby on it.
@@PhyrexTechs thanks so much for the information! I downloaded and unpacked the Onion-4.2.3 and it's showing different files than in your video. Is the process still the same or am I doing something wrong?
It will be the same process. There should be no difference in the folders between these version. I’m using a Samsung SD 128gb. It starts downloading onion to the MM+ but once it hits 11% the stock miyoo logo takes over screen and im back at the stock menu with no onion love!? Please help me
A couple things you can try are: 1. Reformat card and download an older version of Onion OS like 4.2.2 or 4.2.1 and try again you can update it over wifi if it works github.com/OnionUI/Onion/releases 2. Try another SD card if you have one to make sure there is not something wrong with that one. 3. Try another computer to format and unzip Onion OS into the SD card

*WARNING* Back up Roms folder and bios(/Retroarch/.retroarch/system) from stock SD card if you are going to use it for this install.
Thank you so much, perfect tutorial I backed up my bios and roms before install onion os, I'm super happy with this OS
Awesome! Glad you are liking it. It really is a great OS.
@@PhyrexTechs At the start, did you just plug in the named sd card so it picked up the miyoo mini plus folders and they would be accessible in the folders?
@@PhyrexTechs Just asking because im a HUGE beginner (literally knows next to nothing about this)
@endermouse8094
Yeah, you will need to put the SD card into an SD card reader.
Thank you. Watching that Joeys retro handheld was abuse. Quick and to the point. I wish "tutorial" vids followed this
Thanks! Yeah, I'm working on trying to keep my tutorials as concise as possible.

Thanks for the video. I had a hassle when I first set up my RetroPi, you made this Miyoo Mini Plus set up a breeze!
Glad to help! Thanks.
Thank you for this couldn’t figure it out finally a quick and easy guide to follow. I’m like a child who’s just learning when it comes to this lol
Glad it helped!
just got my miyoo mini this xmas, by far this is the best tutorial on installing onion os.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I was watching some other tutorials, but they took way more time then this one and they didn’t show wich firmware is compatible and which not. You also explained every single step very good and I had no problems following your guide. Again thank you for making this so easy ❤
Thank you! I'm glad to hear it. I hope you enjoy Onion OS it's great.
How long did it take you from start to finish? Curious. I a am newb
It takes about 10 - 15 min. Most of that is waiting for the transferring of files to the SD card or Onion OS install process. Might take longer if you have a lot of roms to move over.
thank you for just even letting us know whether or not we should do the upgrade because i was struggling to figure out if i needed to do so
Glad to have helped!
Best guide ever !
Just a small suggestion, please also post or mention where we can get a ROM collection.
I had to search the web for a couple of minutes before finding some archive ROM collections.
Keep up the good work !
Ive just ordered my mini plus and this guide is the easiest ive found on here. Thank you. P.s please do a guide of adding tiny best set go 😉
Probably too short for a video and want to avoid showing people how to download roms.
Thanks bro !! It’s the best, completely and simply guide for onion OS. Good job !

Beautiful. Ur the GOAT.
I have no idea how to do the backup, I don't even know what the bios and roms are, and my Rufus doesn't allow me to change the formatting part, I'm so lost
If you have a windows computer this is something you could try. github.com/schmurtzm/Onion-Desktop-Tools/blob/main/README.md
It should be a lot easier as it is just an application that should walk you through the process.
@@PhyrexTechs Understood, thank you. I also need to retrieve a couple of saves. I will find out where they are located. Merci!
Hey! Just one question: Can I also backup the BIOS files from the original MM+ sd card?
Yeah they are located here on the SD card.
/Retroarch/.retroarch/system
@@PhyrexTechs thank you
how do you get the screen on the left at 2:30 through 2:59?
Those are my personal roms on my PC. You can copy them off of the Stock SD card or you can get them from a collection like "Tiny Best Set Go" or "Done Set"
You have to enable the power button single press to standby, just like it was when it was stock. Long press is shut down.

You're welcome
This was a perfect tutorial! Thank you very much!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Super helpful! Thanks!
This guy is the goat!!!!
Thank you!
Thanks, bro !

My pleasure!
When you add more games, does it delete your save files?
You save files are stored in the Saves/Current profile folder. So unless you are editing that folder or changing the names of your games you should not have any issues.
If you do change the name of your games you will have to make sure the save file is the same name as your rom name.
@@PhyrexTechs Thank you so much!
Nice guide, thank you!

Thank you!!
Also where can I find the BIOS files for PS1? Thanks!
You're welcome!
if I ever want to change to a different Bigger SD card can I just copy paste the files to the new SD card or how would that work?
That would be an option as I have done it. It just might take a long time depending on the speed of the SD card and the card reader. The other option is to just install Onion OS from scratch and then move just the roms over again.
@@PhyrexTechs cool. I’ll try to do it from scratch then 👍
Sounds good. If you run into any issues just let me know. I'll help out.
May have already covered this but I’m using the default SD that came supplied with my miyoo mini plus
Will I be okay providing I back everything up onto pc?
Yeah the 2 main folders you want to back up are :
Roms location = SD Card/Roms
Bios location = SD Card/retroarch/.retroarch/system
You can also back up the whole thing if you want to be able to go back to the stock OS.
If you have not formatted the stock SD card you will find them here on the SD card Bios location = retroarch/.retroarch/system
If you have formatted the card you can either check Internet Archive for a backup file of the Miyoo Mini plus stock SD card or check out another video where I go more in-depth about Bios and Roms ua-cam.com/video/PcPJ3h6MIhA/v-deo.html
@@Amirichi Yeah that should work fine. If you run into any issue or need help with anything just let me know.
Once you install Onion OS is there anyway to go back to stock firmware that came with the device?
Open File Explorer
Select View > Show > Hidden items.
@@PhyrexTechs .tmp_update was originally included. Still doesn’t work :/
@@mochistar3 Is this using the stock SD card? Either way do you have another SD card you can try? Also just to make sure when formatting with Rufus you are choosing FAT32?
@@PhyrexTechs I’m installing onion on the brand SD card and reformatted with Large Fat32.
Yeah it sounds like you are doing everything right. I could only suggest trying a different SD card or trying a different Onion OS version then the one you had tried.
nice video! BTW what wallpaper is that one?
Thanks! The wallpaper is steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2827581846 meant to be used with Wallpaper Engine
When I'm getting at is this guide is invaluable for me being able to actually get the emulators I want on here as default and be able to switch as needed instead of constantly plugging in the SD card to change files up
Thanks! Glad it could help.
The "Refresh all roms" option by hitting select when on the Games screen where you choose your system sometime that can fix that issue also.
How to get miyou plus on @1:12 at the top ?
You will need to connect your SD card to your computer. It's recommended to use a new SD card and not the stock one that comes with the device.
Just getting a miyoo mini plus today. Should I replace the version in your video to the most recent version of onion os? I see version 4.2.3 just dropped probably a couple weeks after you made this video. Or should I just use the 4.2 that you recommended?
You can go ahead and use the updated version. It works great.
If where I buy it from it doesn't include any SD card, I just format a new branded one and add the Onion OS then roms of my own collection to it and put it in the device right?
Yup that is it! Honestly that is the best way to do it.
How long does it take for a newb who is not very tech savy?
And then to download quality rooms and set them up nicely, how long does that take ?
@PhyrexTechs very interesting 🤔 I'm not tech savvy in the least bit so it's a new language lol 😆 thanks for the speedy response btw!!
No problem! Yeah, I get that. It is can be confusing when getting into something you are unfamiliar with. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
Can I just format the card through disk utility on Mac or do I need rufus. I’m sure disk utility on Mac has fat32 what other changes would I need
Yeah if you are on Mac you can just use disk utilities.
Set Format › MS-DOS (FAT)
Set Scheme (if it exists) › Master Boot Record
and you should be good.
I also have heard good things about the auto setup for the Done Set. github.com/doakyz/done-set-auto-setup
If you try it out let me know how it goes.
That's great! Glad it all worked out and happy to help.
Thank you for the guide!

I would like to ask on time stamp 2:25. where can I get the one you add for BIOS?
Because bios files are copyrighted I am unable to share them. However, there are many places you can get them. Internet archive and also the Rom reddit has some good information on where you can get them.
Man I’m having the same issue, went all through the video and then we can’t install the games.. wth
Dragging your roms to the correct folder for each system should install the games. Where are you having an issue with getting the games to work?
@@PhyrexTechshaving the same issue. If it’s the same as me there are no actual roms to drag into the SD
Thanks foe the quick reply mate. What do Bios files do? Just so I know whether I need to keep them@@PhyrexTechs
Some systems like PlayStation require a bios file to run games. So it's best to back them up and if you ever need them you will have them.
This may be a dumb question but where are/when did we get the BIOS and the roms?
The locations of the Bios and Rom files on the stock SD card are listed in the video description.
If you formatted the Stock SD card you can download a back up of it or a collection like Tiny Best Set Go! from Internet Archive.
If you are wanting to get your own Bios/Roms I suggest checking out my Bios and Roms video.
I have installed all the files on the SD and Onion pops up and the systems are on there, but no games. What did I do wrong?
You will need to copy the roms/bios from the Stock SD card. If you are using the stock SD card you can look online for either a digital copy of the SD card or look into something like Tiny Best Set go.
After doing this will we able to finally do in game save for pokemon?
Not sure if Onion OS will fix this exact issue.
From my understanding, this is an issue with either the Stock SD card or the Stock Roms that come with the device.
You will either want to replace the Stock SD card with a name brand one.Replace the stock Pokemon Roms with your own Roms. Or both for good measure.
You could still give it a try to see if it works just make sure to back up any roms and bios files on the stock SD if you are going to use that one.
hey, thank you for tutorial! I have got one question, what's the reason that we cannot use SD over 128gb?
@@PhyrexTechs do the stock files come with the roms?
Most SD card backups I have seen on Internet Archive are full backups of everything that was on the Stock card including ROMs unless they state otherwise.
But the miyoo mini plus comes with games pre-installed, so if i add onion os will they disappear? Some miyoo minis comes with an SD card with games
Yes, If you use the stock SD card, which is not recommended. If you choose to use the stock SD card anyways you will want to backup/copy over your ROMs and Bios from the SD card to your PC so you do not lose those games.
Do I have to do this a second time for another sd card or will the same onion download work?
Because onion OS is installed on the SD card. You have to do this for any SD card that you want to use OnionOS on.
@@PhyrexTechscool, thank you. Do you know how the operating system on the MM+ when you first get is decent or would you recommend to change to onion?
@@surajshergill7777 I would say the stock OS is usable. However, OnionOS is by far the best option.

The best options you have are to go to the Internet Archive and search for a Miyoo Mini Stock SD card backup or the Tiny Best Set Go collection. The other option would be to check out my Roms and Bios video.
@@PhyrexTechs word! Thanks for the reply. Hopefully i can figure it out. Thanks my dude! Great vid
Is it necessary to format the SD card even though it's brand new?
Yeah, it needs to be formatted with the correct file system. In this case FAT32.
Thanks for the helpful video. My Miyoo Mini came with preinstalled roms and stuff. Can I transfer them over to the new firmware?
Yeah, I would recommend using a new SD card for Onion OS. If you plan on using the stock SD card make sure to get everything you want off of it before you move to Onion OS.
@@PhyrexTechs Gotcha. Thanks again my dude.
Does Onion OS improve performance of the device or just add some new features?
If there are any performance improvements they are negligible.
The best feature hands down is the game switcher. It utilizes auto save and load states that allow you to switch back and forth between any game quickly almost like alt tabbing between games.
Another great thing is when you turn the device off it will save the state and load state when powered back on.
@@PhyrexTechswhat if you didn't want it to save and just wanted to turn off device?
@@suhtangwong So by default when powered off or closing a game it makes a save state incrementally this is what allows the game switcher to work and should not interfere with your manual save states. If you don't like this feature, you can disable it by going to:
Apps > RetroArch Settings > Settings > Saving > Turn off "auto save state" and "load state automatically."
Back out to the "Settings" menu of Retroarch, then go down to Configuration File > Save Current Configuration.
And if you want the MM+ to start at the main menu on every boot:
Then go to Apps > Tweaks > System > Startup... and turn off Auto-resume last game.
Nice video thank you. Where do we find games to download?
I discuss this topic in my latest video.
thank you
Welcome!
Where do you get the bios mentioned in this part? 02:30
If you have not formatted the stock SD card you will find them here on the SD card
Bios location = retroarch/.retroarch/system
If you have formatted the card you can either check Internet Archive for a backup file of the Miyoo Mini plus stock SD card or check out another video where I go more in depth about Bios and Roms

@@PhyrexTechs Thank you for your answer. If you don't mind, may I ask you one more question? Can I execute the Dreamcast game with miyoo mini +??
I don't mind at all. No, Dreamcast is out of reach of the Miyoo Mini +. Because it does not have a GPU it cannot play N64 and above.
I just received the R36S and ordered the RG35XX Plus. I will be doing a video on those sometime soon. They both have GPUs so they could play Dreamcast however I'm not sure of the performance yet.
@@PhyrexTechs That's too bad lol I'm still following the instructions so I'm using them well now thanks so much.
Anytime! I hope you enjoy the Miyoo Mini plus. There are a lot of good games that it can play.
I don't have a windows pc, but i have a linux.
So long story short, i can do this installation without windows? Is that correct?
Is there a reason for installing a new os? What’s wrong with the one it comes with?
There is nothing necessarily wrong with it. If it works for you and enjoy it that is fine. However, Onion OS adds a lot of features that are amazing.
Things like game switcher or adding ports. A full list can be found here: onionui.github.io/
I’m getting a new se card. Dose the se reader it come with work yes I’m cheap like that 😂
Yes, it is not the fastest and I don't currently use it but it worked for me when I tried it.
Quick question
So the Miyoo Mini Plus I'm purchasing has its own sd card with games. Is it OK to buy a new sd card to install onion and will I be able to just drop and drag the emulators and roms from the old sd card
Damn I can’t use Rufus because I have an old chrome book any pointers ?
You can try the built in chromebook formatting tool. I have not tested it, I'm so not sure it would work.
But I think you just open the files app> then right click the SD card> select format device >then see if there is an option for FAT32
Great tutorial and got Union OS installed. Just one question, where did you find the roms? Both Folders are emty of roms.
Not sure if something got corrupted and doubt I deleted them because I never touched the folder.
If you did not back up the roms from the stock SD card. You will need to acquire them again. On Internet Archive, you can find backups of the stock SD card if you want that or find a collection like Tiny Best Set Go.
I also discuss this topic in my video called where to find roms and bios.
What happens if you DONT use a name brand sd card..? also, I have a mac, can I still download rufus?
Good news for you my friend, you don't need rufus on a Mac. You can format your SD card with the built-in Disk Utilities:
Open Application › Utilities › Disk Utilities
From the sidebar, select the USB drive
Choose Erase from the toolbar
Set Format › MS-DOS (FAT)
Set Scheme (if it exists) › Master Boot Record
Click Erase and wait for the process to finish
As for the name brand SD card it's just for reliability.
@@thruthebrain That's great to hear. I hope you enjoy it!
is there any rufus alternatives for a mac user?

wait i am confused, did u format with the stock SD card or another SD card with rufus? i’m planning to use a new branded SD card, but i plugged the stock SD to my card reader first (since i assumed that’s what u did in the video). ik u said to accept the warning message but i didn’t do it cause the word ‘destroyed’ scared me 😂 i don’t want to somehow accidentally delete anything that came with the stock SD, that’s why i wanted to make sure if this was meant for the stock or not. sorry i’m a complete noob, this just flew over my head. i’m quite embarrassed asking this haha
Hey no problem! Sorry I was not more clear. You will want to do this with your new branded SD card and not the Stock SD card.
Open Application › Utilities › Disk Utilities
From the sidebar, select the USB drive that corresponds with the SD card you want to format Choose to format the root element
Choose Erase from the toolbar
Set Format › MS-DOS (FAT)
Set Scheme (if it exists) › Master Boot Record
Click Erase and wait for the process to finish
I hope your son enjoys his new birthday present! I bought mine for myself, however my daughter loves to play Kirby on it.
@@PhyrexTechs thanks so much for the information! So just so I can remember, I need to back up what’s on the stock card first into a folder on the desktop; as for formatting I have to format the game device first before downloading onion os ?; after the formatting and downloading onion os , I have to find a collection of games from Tiny best set go to get games like super Mario etc. ?; and somewhere in all that I have to completely omit the us of Rufus on a Mac and just follow the steps given instead . ::sweats:: … i will definitely watch all your videos on this 😅. If I get this right my son better think I’m the coolest mom in the world or else.
Yeah sounds like you got it down! If you run into any problems just let me know.
Tiny Best Set Go is quite a large collection kinda like the one that came with the Miyoo Mini. If you are trying to be more specific I would check my latest video out.
😅hi I’m back . Today I bought a Samsung SD card 128 gb. I’m currently doing a back up folder of the Stock SD card on my Mac. And copying everything on there. I’m trying to prepare myself to update the firmware and format the SD card . The thing is, how do I do this correctly with the new Samsung SD card I just purchased? Thank you again in advance😅
I downloaded and unpacked the Onion-4.2.3 and it's showing different files than in your video. Is the process still the same or am I doing something wrong?
It will be the same process. There should be no difference in the folders between these version.
It should still be these folders

If you see something different make sure you did not download the source code zip by accident.

@@PhyrexTechs thx !
So for some reason when I reinsert the sd card it just boots up regularly. I found the one hidden file, but it's not workin. Please help!

You're welcome!
I’m using a Samsung SD 128gb.
It starts downloading onion to the MM+ but once it hits 11% the stock miyoo logo takes over screen and im back at the stock menu with no onion love!? Please help me
A couple things you can try are:
1. Reformat card and download an older version of Onion OS like 4.2.2 or 4.2.1 and try again you can update it over wifi if it works github.com/OnionUI/Onion/releases
2. Try another SD card if you have one to make sure there is not something wrong with that one.
3. Try another computer to format and unzip Onion OS into the SD card
where'd you get your cool 'tendo sticker
This is where I got it. It's sold out at the moment but it comes back in stock regularly and other sellers seem to have it available too. www.etsy.com/listing/1215555181/nintendo-gameboy-label-aufkleber-sticker?ref=share_v4_lx
*does it have emulation station frontend like on ArkOS?*
It does not. Onion OS acts like the frontend and most things run off of Retroarch.
