I have a new sd card and reader on the way and i am DETERMINED to play a game on this thing. I will be back to update my progress!
Just got mine today, extremely helpful! Wanna put in some notes though. FAT32 works the same as LARGE FAT32. If you plug in the SD card and charger (after adding the firmware file to your card) and you don't see a rocket, just the charging screen, you're good to skip the update part as you can already just put all the Onion stuff on your formatted card (or this worked for me, got mine on 7/27/23)
Its September 2023 and this video still works perfect. I didnt see your update, so I downgraded, but I'm sure its fine. Everything works great and I love this little system! Thanks again for a great video.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds hi, I happened to see this comment and I have a quick question for you. I followed the instructions and unzipped all required folders into the same folder. When I unzipped the tiny best set go games zip folder, it asked if I wanted to replace or skip a bunch of files. There were 1800 or 1900. I skipped them but not sure if I should have. I did the 128 GB set so it said to download the folder I just mentioned plus the 64 and 128 expansions.
Likely didn't hurt. In all honesty, I don't personally use the tiny best set, as I have my own curated roms, but shouldn't be any reason why you'd need to overwrite them, so you should be fine.
Another small update with the more recent versions of Onion, you wont see the FTP and Web necessarily in the apps anymore, however, once its enabled Via Tweaks > Network, you can then navigate to the IP assigned to your unit (check Network again for the IP) and you'll still be able to access the browser the same way. It confused me a bit at first until I realized I toggled the option on and to just try the IP assigned. The more you know :)

Thanks for your useful guide. I followed it with very few problems (all of which were ahem... user error). I did download the box art packs from Tiny Best Set - much less painful than scraping and seem to be very accurate. I also agree that the included card reader is rubbish, it simply didn't work very well and has been consigned to the bin - what a waste of resources! The rom downloads did indeed take some time, but they say patience is a virtue!

Thanks a lot for this video. My dad has been looking for ways to play retro games so I decided to get him one of these and set it up for him for Christmas. On the game images- I'm curious if you can do it through tiny best set go? Is that what the image files are intended to be? If so, how would one do that? Or is it really easier to go and do the scraping through the miyoo itself? Just curious!
Sooo 80% of this was fairly easy to follow and I know this is a couple months old from the time of me seeing it, but several things you come across are not even options now. But when it comes to the ROM and BIOS library, Tiny Best Set is pretty hard to follow for me not being up to speed on all this emulator stuff even though I consider myself technologically advanced to a degree a little more in depth would be great on that aspect. But personally I think the setup my Miyoo Mini + comes installed with is way easier to navigate and much much faster than Onion from a couple seconds to start up to almost 2 minutes to load the one game I transferred from my original card to my new one you recommended. Am I missing something or doing something wrong? I don't know why my save file doesn't transfer to my new card with everything else in with my game files. Again not bashing you this was very detailed an in depth and very helpful for the most part. I just feel like I'm doing something wrong and the speed difference is a huge variable compared to whatever it comes with preinstalled. Just in that aspect alone I don't know if its even worth the effort just because it seems like it is going to slow everything way down compared to what it has already. Thanks for any help in advance.
Hey, appreciate the long message, but yeah, transferring over the old bad roms, to the new card, is the antithesis of you want to do here. You want to follow the video to a T otherwise there's really no point doing it. But a two minute load time is not normal either way.
Yeah I was trying to do it all along with your video with a fresh card but when I went to the Tiny Best Set I guess I'm missing the download "button" cause I didn't see anywhere to get the file for the game libraries from... There was a bunch of hyperlinks but nothing stood out to me for downloads. And I was assuming copy and paste from old to new was my problem with the load time but that was just a test cause I didn't have any games at all. But is there a way to transfer my save file for the new version once I get it downloaded? Cause I'm way far into Zelda A Link To The Past to start over 🤣🤣 Thanks again for the reply 🙏🙏
If you look on the right, if you're on a desktop, you can click zip and individually download the zips for your size card following what the page says or on mobile, it's at the bottom. You'll see HTML, item tile, zip, show all etc. Yep you can continue your actual save, but likely not your save state. Backup your save onto your PC, make a new save in onion and replace that save.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds awesome thanks yeah I must have missed that in the side I'm doin on desktop I'll look again tomorrow. So what's the difference in a save file and the save state? Is that like my actual in game save VS the device save? Is that what the save state is? From the device when I hit the menu button?
Yep, actual save is saving normally in game so think Pokemon, push start, hit save. That's a normal save. Save state is when you do the hotkey for menu R1 or menu to exit etc. Those are saving your states.
Thank you so much for the guide! As some people have said, the set up may seem scary but thanks to this tutorial it is perfectly possible and even easy for people like me with no idea of tech stuff. I have one question! Is it possible to install Nintendo 64 console and games in the Miyoo Mini Plus?
This is an excellent resource for setting these up. Can anyone tell me if I can just duplicate the card after I get it set up the first time? I bought several of these to give as gifts. So I was hoping to create a card on the first device, then just copy it to all of the other cards.
thanks SO much for this. Just got it set up with no trouble -- phew. Is there a reason why we need to have an account with scraper to get the images? What if we don't really care about the images, can we just ignore the scraper section? Thanks again- very helpful for someone who was really intimidated by doing this lol
Hello Joe, I have a question, when you said copy all the BIOS files into the files on your SD card. I noticed that my bios folder in my SD card has some folders inside. Also in the tiny best set go it has as well some folders inside Bios. I should copy all the things that are inside the bios of the set to my BIOS folder of my SD card or should I delete the folders and let only the bios?
Hello i didnt understand the part where tiny best set 😅 can you do it in depth and do the steps i have a 128 gb sd card i dont understand it can you help please
The tiny best set BIOS and Roms folders already come with both normal and zipped folders containing files. In the video, you say there should only be the files so should I remove the folders and take out the files in it or should I just leave it as is?
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Cheers thanks! This is probably a silly question but is it ok to delete the games I don't want from the tinybestset folders or will that mess with the setup?

New here. Just a quick question, so I have this option stock os or onion os to purchase. Does the os version come with the SD card ? Or it's like built in to the device? Because I'm planning to buy stock os since it's more affordable and getting separate SD card with onion os installed. Tia

And I was assuming copy and paste from old to new was my problem with the load time but that was just a test cause I didn't have any games at all. But is there a way to transfer my save file for the new version once I get it downloaded? Cause I'm way far into Zelda A Link To The Past to start over 🤣🤣
Thanks again for the reply 🙏🙏
Thank you so much ! im so happpy :)
Thank you so much for the guide! As some people have said, the set up may seem scary but thanks to this tutorial it is perfectly possible and even easy for people like me with no idea of tech stuff. I have one question! Is it possible to install Nintendo 64 console and games in the Miyoo Mini Plus?
And another question I have: Where can we download more games?
Unfortunately it's not powerful enough for N64.
Yeah you can ignore it. The account is just to get by the daily limit for scraping as a free guest, can't recall the limit.
Yeah you should have a bios folder from the tiny best set, just merge that with the bios folder on the sd card.
Thanks ❤
Hello i didnt understand the part where tiny best set 😅 can you do it in depth and do the steps i have a 128 gb sd card i dont understand it can you help please
The tiny best set BIOS and Roms folders already come with both normal and zipped folders containing files. In the video, you say there should only be the files so should I remove the folders and take out the files in it or should I just leave it as is?
I couldn't see from your scrolling does it have colecovision and/or MSX?
The bit at 3:20. Is that something you do with the stock card that comes with the machine not the sd card you get yourself?
You can use a new sd card for that, then just reformat it after to use for games. Just format it to Fat32 beforehand.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Cheers thanks! This is probably a silly question but is it ok to delete the games I don't want from the tinybestset folders or will that mess with the setup?
Nope you can delete and add whatever you want
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thank you!
Awsome it all worked out so well! Finaly got wifi working it only took the update tot onion 4.2.3 :)
My miyoo firmware is 202305052130, does this mean I have to wait for Onion OS to catch up or can I continue with this guide?
You can continue!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds thank you! Yes it worked, only had my mm+ for a day before moving to onion but it looks much cleaner!
Thanks for the in-dept setup guide, highly appreciated.
I have a specific question regarding the achievements settings - how can I log off or switch off achievements? Each time I play using without wifi on (to stop draining my battery), I get an annoying retroachievements text... How can I make it stop.
I tried switching off the achievements - but it does not seem to work. Thanks in advance!
You can turn off the notification, but then you'll never see it. There's no way to turn it off only when it's offline unfortunately.
I updated to Onion but the FTP app isn’t anywhere in my package manager, is there a way to download that somehow?
Check tweaks, network.
@@JoeysRetroHandheldsI did that and it’s still not showing up in my package manager or apps, super weird. Thanks for the reply and guide though, got everything else working
thank you so much! 🙏
You're very welcome!
I have a mac, I don't have any idea how to get to the first step of creating the non-bootable drive.
Unfortunately I don't have a MAC.
You're a great help, thanks. I set this up a month ago for my brother, and now my games have no sound. The device still makes sound in the home page, settings etc, but goes mute when I start a game. Do you know if there is a fix for this? Should I update or reinstall something? Also, the mame games have some sort of copyright menu that keeps popping up everytime I press the A button. I don't know what my brother did, I'm so confused by all of this. Any help would be appreciated.
3:45 does that mean if my myioo already has onionOS I can skip this?
For a complete newb, how long would it take from start to finish to install onion os, plus finding and adding quality roms? 1 hr? 2hrs? 3hrs? More? Thanks
The length of this video.
halo, i wanna ask something about installing onion on mini+
from this video you said that if i wanna install onion on mini+, i must update mini+ firmware to the latest version 03:35 . but i wanna buy mini+ without sdcard, how im supposed to know the firmware bcs there no OS to view it to begin with?
The OS is in the device.
New here. Just a quick question, so I have this option stock os or onion os to purchase. Does the os version come with the SD card ? Or it's like built in to the device? Because I'm planning to buy stock os since it's more affordable and getting separate SD card with onion os installed. Tia
Thanks for all of the details.👍
