    The yellow switch on the left bar is your passing high beams, or just to flash your high beam quickly. never put more oil in these than you need, if you don't have any leaks, add just enough, or you're robbing economy and hp, so you want to stay between low and high level, any more adds additional friction. The "thingy" is called a "petcock", and it should be the first thing you replace on these, they're all faulty, next should be the cam chain tensioner(look it up). Other than that and a few other things that will make this comment too long to read, just have fun! :D these are great bikes, and incredibly reliable, light, fuel efficient, and one of the best sounding cruisers out there. enjoy! Hello and thank you very much for this simple explanation of basic things. It's been many a yr for me since I have ridden. Just got blessed with a great deal on a 2008 S40.... ~The bike won't start after sitting for a week.... Will go out and try again, after putting it neutral as per your video.... Will let you know in a minute if that worked... ~~Also please anyone - What is the yellow switch for? It's above left grip on front side of bike. Also the emergency stop switch - red one by throttle - I presume it is in on position being down, as is yours in this video? On as in, ready to engage, if needed, by pressing top portion down to kill engine? Is that rt? Tysm! .... Back in a few....

    • @DLionheart
      @DLionheart 4 роки тому

      Okay update.... Put bike in neutral, pulled out choke, put emergency kill switch in its proper place, tried to start bike. It wouldn't. Put gas in PRI as per another post below and it worked as far as bike trying to turn over, finally. But it refused to stay running dammit... Put gas back to on, kept trying to start it both with choke on then off, nope. Dammit. So bike refuses to start up... It tries but that's all. May have flooded it.... Will try again in a little bit. ~Thank you again for your video and to all who added valuable info below. 👍☺

    OK anytime your not running you bike you need to turn that gas petcock off. Sometimes the float in the carb will stick and then gas will free flow and thats not a good thing!

    • @anthonyrodriguez142

      don black for the Suzuki S40 you don’t need to turn it off. It’s a vacuum Petcock which means that it goes off automatically when you turn the bike off.

    Little note about the gas knob, or lever or whatever you want to call it ;) the way that the fuel system works on the s40/savage is by pressure. The engine creates negative pressure when running which "pulls" the fuel from the tank to the carburator. When the engine is not running the fuel is still. this prevents any fuel from dripping out anywhere, when the lever isset to on. Prime however lets the fuel flow. now gravity lets the fuel from the tank to the carb. I would only use prime for a first startup after a winter season where the bike has not been running for several months. And only if it will not start in the on position. A little note as well. Putting the lever in prime will not only empty your main gas tank but also you reserve. This means that when you eventually run out of gas, you are out for good ;) I love the Suzuki s40/Savage, it is a great little bike. Perfectly shaped. It is not much, but it presents itself very well! Have a nice day everyone!

      On mine, positive is on the right side as you're sitting on it looking forward. Good way to tell is by using a test light or voltmeter with one probe on terminal and other on ground

    • @KiwiHelpgeek
      @KiwiHelpgeek 9 років тому

      +ErikJ7228 The brass device is to check the tension of the drive belt. In theory you should make sure that only one line is showing but in practice if you can twist the belt 90 degrees it is at the right tension.

    • @buttafoo

  • @xMuShAdDx
    @xMuShAdDx 9 років тому

    The fuel switch thing is the petcock, and PRI means prime. You flip it to prime and it fills the carburetor bowl with fuel, making it easier to start. Also a great way to identify potential vacuum issues if your bike doesn't run in the On position. Thanks for the vid!

    • @nimbly1693

      Running the bike with the cock "on" until it sputters then switching to "reserve" is SOP on bikes with carbs.

    • @smugmode
      @smugmode 5 років тому

      @@nimbly1693 Why is that standard?

    • @nimbly1693
      @nimbly1693 5 років тому

      @@smugmode Because if you run it on "prime" or "reserve" there's no way to know that you're running out of gas. You also want to shut it off when you park. Gas expands when it gets hot. It will flood your carburetor and cause vapor lock.
