  • A little demonstration of using the RF-7800R-RC remote control units together with the Harris RF-5800H-MP HF radio, the RF-310M-HH VHF/UHF handheld radio (PRC-152 civilian equivalent) as well as the RF-300 vehicular mount for the RF-310M. Video also shows using the RF-5983-SA001 speaker mic attachment.
    Be sure to watch the next video in the series: • Operating the Harris R... shows me using the set up from my land rover!
    And here is a 2022 video doing a camping setup: • Defender Camping and H...
    Enjoy!

    You said something like "why would you want to remote a handheld?" - well if the enemy is using DF and firing artillery at your location, being 2000' from the transmitting radio might be a great idea. But I agree, there probably aren't many civilian radio enthusiasts dodging artillery shells. Nice video!

      Also it allows you to sit in an observation post, command post or whatever and benefit from stuff like amplifiers and better antennas/better antenna siting etc on a vehicle that can be on the reverse slope or in concealment e.g. a wood.

      It's a great way to run a radio out of your TOC to an antenna on the ridgeline. We had a couple pairs of the old Vietnam type RT units back in the 90's. They worked ok, but the antenna was a pain in the butt to setup and take down.

      Lol. We were using RT-524 radios at Ft. Gordon in 1985-86. Sometime in 1986 we did final field testing of the Raytheon Sincgar radio and first generation of digital subscriber gear.
      However, for portable ops I'm sticking with my FT-857D. A military radio can't hold a candle to it except in terms ruggedness and some types of "flexibility."
      Soon to be 59 I have no desire to play in the boonies, mud, desert, or mountains. One I get to a park bench, I am golden.

    That newer connector you are looking at with the orange dot thingy on it is an accessory/serial connector. Don't know the exact number off the top of my head, but I could probably find it if you wanted. Those are generally found in a pairing with the accessory connector on one side and an rs232 jack on the other. Then you can hook it into a computer with an rs232 port and flick packets at the radio as though it was a phone modem. Even with that feature though, most people use a red side connector to plug it into a computer for winIDM use or attach a pcidm/uidm to the black side connector for data use.

      @@w2hx Sure thing. I've watched hundreds of Ukrainian invasion videos on UA-cam, one last week showed what looked like a basement and on the table was very clearly a Harris square radio, a Falcon spare battery sat on the table and to the right a Motorola DMR mobile and the soldier was coordinating actions between the two radios. If I encounter it again I'll paste the link here. I wasn't aware there was a non-military version of the Falcon made by Harris. Can it frequency hop? And if so, how is the hop programming achieved? Cheers Nigel

    • @w2hx
      @w2hx  2 роки тому +3

      @@NigelBallard Thanks for the note. Very interesting about Ukraine using Harris radios. Yes Harris generally makes both military and commercial versions of their radios. For example, the AN/PRC-150 military is also the RF-5800H-MP. AN/PRC-152(a) is very similar to the RF-310M-HH. The RF-7800M is the civvy equivalent of the AN/PRC-117G etc. In fact, most of the NATO equipment is not US Military because we don't share our proprietary US military encryption technology. So the NATO stuff uses commercial encryption like AES256. There is a lot of stuff now coming out of Afghanistan which is all NATO/civvy stuff. Thanks again.

      @@w2hx I appreciate the reply. I searched for 30 minutes trying to locate the guy with the Harris, but failed. I am a fan of AES256 as it is easy to keyload on my Moto gear. Is there a website that advertises the Falcon HH units ex Afghanistan for sale? A link would be welcomed. Cheers Nigel

    Hi there. Can You tell me does this remote control unit support remote control of station RF7850?

    • @w2hx

      Good Question! Unfortunately, the side connector on the 7850 has different keying than the PRC-152/RF-310M radio. I have not found ANY side connectors that fit the 7850. If I can find a pinout for the 7850, and if it is substantially similar/same as the 152/310 then I would consider grinding off the key from a side connector cable for a 310 and try it.
