- A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit from Disney against Gov. DeSantis, saying that the company's claims lacked standing to bring the suit. This comes after Disney argued that Florida's government was retaliating after the company criticized the state's limits on the discussion of sexuality in classrooms.

Waits for judges to dismiss the lawsuits by corporations against local governments that put regulations on them.
It would depend on what those regulations are. Some would be legitimate, and some would have no legal basis and therefore would indeed merit suit against them. This baseless suit by Disney was dismissed because it was borne out of Disney’s delusion that they had a “right” to “self-governance” as a corporation, and no such right exists.
@davidpar2 But according to the Supreme Court, corporations are "people". Republicans agreed with that ruling, so why don't they apply that same standard with Disney?

Wrinkle? There was never any hope this would win. They didn't "pull the special tax status" as stated in the video. Florida abolished an illegal government that was intended to be operated by the citizens of RCID, but was instead in Disney's pocket. (They also abolished 6 other special districts in the state at the same time btw). Disney and RCID are two totally separate legal entities. It is not considered retaliation if there was literally no action taken against the people suing.
1:12 When he says it can "no longer be controlled by Disney" it actually is illegal if Disney was actually in control. Please tell me where a private corporation literally has their own sole government power in America without any oversight? It's misleading to phrase it this way.
This was always going to go this way. Disney didn't even use Florida lawyers to help in a case based on Florida law. They can appeal all they want. If you really consider the ramifications for Disney winning this case... that precedent would be far worse. If Disney had won, it means you could run into a situation where the Mayor of a town could be sued in federal court by an HOA because the HOA and the Mayor had different political beliefs, and the mayor put up a stop sign the HOA didn't like. Disney are fools who do not understand the relevant law here.
In fact, of course this isn't being included in the news, but there has been an audit and there is ongoing investigation about the improper relationship Disney and RCID had and there are potentially some very serious criminal charges coming for both Disney (potentially including high level executives) and the leadership of RCID. The audit found absolute abuse and misuse of public funds and self-serving decisions. For example, Disney built a parking with taxpayer money, and then restricted a public building as a private parking lot for Disney guests. Also, the district had contracted with Disney to provide all utility services... and the district was able to set their own valuation and tax rates on Disney's land. The abuse of power was absolutely horrible.
It's being horribly twisted by the news because the news is so politicized, but this was always a poor case and Disney was really only hoping to win in public opinion, not on the actual merits.
The lefty news media will always frame how wronged the left was. They never tell you the whole story. Awesome break down by the way. This is the way it should have been presented on any news channel.
What about the other 1800 special districts? We have about 39,000 in the country. You point out that 6 other special districts where removed as if that makes a dent in the remaining special districts in FL, all 99.58% of them. The law didn't say SD's are illegal, it just banned the ones from before a certain date. They worded the law so it would remove as few districts as possible. Also, if it was intended to be run by the citizens of the district, then having the gov appoint its members is just as illegal. If DeSantis has practice doing anything, its removing ELECTED officials and appointing lackey's. In the end, the whole point of freedom of speech, is to protect us from the govt. To allow otherwise chips away at our constitution.
@@caesarmedina8489 you have no idea how different rcid was from any other special districts. If other districts have board members from corporations, it's not all from the same corporation.
Other special districts didn't have sole power to approve airports and nuclear power plants without any additional government oversight. Other districts have guidelines to follow about who they pay to provide services to the residents of the district. Disney controlled the government so rcid contacted with Disney owned utilities. Everything was on an entirely different level than other districts... in particular because the district previously did not fall under Florida's constitution because it had been formed before the constitution existed.
@@newspin2477 I will not argue your facts, you seem to have a vast amount of knowledge on these subjects, but I would point out that it is a bit disingenuous to say that the FL constitution didn't exist, there was a constitution that existed, it just wasn't the 1968 constitution. I know, you'll probably give me crap for the semantics, which I will ignore, but your comment implied that FL never had a state constitution up until 1968.
@@newspin2477 Few districts are owned almost entirely by one company. They own about 45 out of 47 square miles of the district. You can argue all you want how they have a better deal then anyone else, but that's not what the lawsuit is about. Its about the govt attacking a person/group over using their free speech. If he really cared about this issue, he would have done something 10 years ago, but no he didn't. He even regularly took Disney's money. He is only doing this because they spoke up against him.
The 1st amendment was literally created to protect us from this. The fact that he said he was going to attack all woke companies says it all. If he can take away 1st amendment rights away from someone as powerful as Disney, what hope do you think you have when he targets you?
Everyone knows it was retaliation, but it was Florida's legislature - not DeSantis, who approved changing Florida law to eliminate Disney's special district - that's democracy in action, and it worked beautifully here.
Disney where dreams come true. So they can finaly die.
Didn't he all but admit that was the reason why he did it? Also, then shouldn't Disney sue to have all the special districts in the state removed? After all, if it's not about "retaliation" and it is about "being fair," then Daytona Speedway shouldn't have one, nor should The Villages.

So he was telling you exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it while Disney has been quietly implementing weird stuff into their films for decades now? Hmm... Sounds like Disney is in the wrong, not the other way around. NBC is a good place to go for bad takes and there is no reason a private corporation should have it's own government, unless you're a billionaire globalist who wants to tear down nation states and destroy small government. Desantis is just a state governor who will come and go. Disney would take over the world if they could. Don't let them fool you with their pixie dust

Disney was a corporation parading itself as a tax exempt government in Florida deciding to play politics against the government that gave it self governing power.
Disney has no leg to stand on, and I’m sure if any other corporation had the same power as Disney you’d been screaming for Florida to strip them of that power.
They're just treated like every other business now. He's not punishing them harsher than anyone else.
Disney has 3 appeals before they ran out of options
I wonder how Disney didn't have standing in this case?
the Entity that was effected from the action was the local government aka formerly called RCID. For Disney to be effected is to say Disney "is" RCID (Disney=RCID). From what i've gathered, a business can't be a government or i guess have government powers. They have to be 2 separate entities. So, when Florida dissolved RCID, it couldn't have damaged Disney. Therefore the judge would rule "no standing".
If florida forced disney to shut down all disney parks indefinitely or did something to disney directly because of said statement. Then and only then would they have standing. At least that's my understanding of this situation
