3 Mistakes I Made With My GSP Puppy

- Making mistakes can be hard to admit. But there are definitely things I wish I would have done differently with my German Shorthaired Pointers when they were puppies. Sometimes I feel like having dogs is similar to having children (where my fellow moms and dads at!?). With the first child, you try to do everything right and by the book. With the 2nd one you are just hoping to survive and many of the original rules get broken. Am I right!?
I don't think its too late to teach an old dog new tricks, do you? But consistency on my end is definitely key. I hope these help you to navigate those puppy days and learn from the mistakes that I made!

Definitely not too late for either. I'm a trainer who's worked with many GSPs and they've all been successful at learning how to walk at a loose leash heel. Takes consistency and time but I can assure you it's not too late for them on any obedience. You can do it!! Just need the right resources and you'll be on your way :)
consistency is definitely my problem - I want overnight success - even though I know thats not possible. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm definitely going to keep trying!

Ours would prefer to sleep with us, but we can kick them out and they go to the couch, by the woodstove or, god forbid, on one of the many dog beds.
I heard an interview with Mr. Bashore this week on SDPB radio. I didnt realize how involved in conservation he is! Im grateful for the work people like him do.
Yes! He has been doing conservation work for YEARS. Its just in his blood.
I must just say that neither of my dogs have ever been crated except in the car. A GSP needs to be with you at all times . My two have high sided beds on the floor in my sitting room, it's where they sleep, where they go when people come and wait to be invited to greet. I did this training with cheese and fresh cooked chicken as the only treats when training. I would put cushions, bags etc on the furniture to stop them from getting up, I didn't do this until mine were 3 and 4 years old, when they jumped up and they would, I immediately called them off and gave chicken or cheese, I then placed a few pieces in their respective beds, it took them about a week to learn the new rules, they occasionally forget and gently reminded with a treat in hand. You also need a tone of voice, the one you tell your kids off with. On your bed, really! lol! Please don't crate them they take it as rejection. High sided beds, with a blanket, on the floor by your bed and consistency. You must choose one thing at a time to teach. Close the doors of the rooms with furniture when you are not using them and put their beds in the room you are in. I would also suggest that you make them sit quietly before you put their collars on, that craziness of jumping around will have you over on your backside one day. I have one that does not like to sit, some GSP's don't, as long as her attention is on me I don't make a fuss. I tend to use the word really to get their attention if they are doing something wrong, it always works. Don't underestimate these dogs they are very intelligent and will use the make you guilty look and if they really disagree they will whine at you. Raised eyebrows, bring your head back and just look at them, make sure they look away first. Sorry this has been really long and yes buy a natural fibre round slip leash, I keep putting lead because I'm English.
I am in the same boat. I wish I could've done things differently. My gsp is somewhat trained, but she is only 1 year old, so we still have lots of training left.

My uncle has a GSP in training camp right now. He is almost a year old, and his name is Luke. Before he went to camp, everytime i had a blanket, he would jump up and try to bite it. The blankets that were over his kennle at night, he ate those aswell. He is super sweet, but energetic. If you are going to get a gsp...1. make sure if you have small pets, ur willing to train ur gsp to not eat them, 2. you have kids that are more around the age of 4-5-10 and so on, 3. You can afford, train, and walk and feed them, and keep up with sceduale. My uncles GSP is partley mine, bc we agreed to share him. This is just my opinion. Thanks for reading this comment!

I agree wholly!!! Crate training with the right size worked well, never in the bed or feeding from the table for me. Loki gets super excited when prep his dry food. Its and easy scoop for me but he goes wild after 3yrs. Any help is welcomed
Hmmmm..I"m not sure! My boys get excited for food, but they wait until it is in their bowl before I let them eat. Its what I taught them from the beginning. Maybe try putting him outside or in another room while you prepare the food? And then when he comes in you can take him to it?
Wish you well with that ........ I have a 4.5 yr old and I am not sure who is training who. She is a little more compliable now days but my rules have been rewritten with a bias in her favor. Not my first dog/has a large fenced yard w/trees and rough area backed up with elect fence (found out how fast she can dig) and my house. I don't know where people find the CALM ones, I have suspicions about that.

If you are still having problems with leash walks then I have a suggestion. I do have 2 GSP's and have been able to walk off leash since 3 months with instant recall but was never particularly happy on the leash. Use a slip leash. Slip leash over the head, under the chin pull the slip leash, twist, and place over the nose, pull comfortable from the back of the head and then bringing the leash up behind the ears to the top of the head, middle of ears, tighten comfortably. You then have total control and the dog won't pull. They will learn quite quickly that they don't like the slip leash around their noses and soon learn not to pull. You can then take it off their noses, one of mine occasionally forgets and needs to be reminded, a couple of times around the nose and she won't pull for months. Hope this helps. These dogs learn very quickly as long as you are very consistent.

Dont feel too bad I tried from 9weeks to walk on leash without pulling. At 5yrs old hes good going away from the car on a walk, but the second I turn to return to the car it's all pull and rushing to get back to his car. I've tried every training technique and all the gadgets. With a prong collar I can get him to the car without being dragged off my feet. That's the best I've gotten. He wants to get to his car and go home, period.🤷♀️

My Vizsla has so much in common with your GSPs. I’d say on the leash training part, I did that from day one since he was 8 weeks old and today he still pulls when something activates his high prey drive or wants to say hello to someone.
The obedience part you can probably still salvage but will take more patience.
The sleep thing I do the opposite. He sleeps on his bed at night, I have allergies too, but then gets to nap on my bed in the morning for a half hour before breakfast.
Do they each have an assigned crate? I love how they’re so eager to jump in the car. Mine has to sit there for a few seconds to think about it before jumping in, waiting as if I should lift him up. I think my mistake early on was that I picked him up as a pup to get in the car. They’re so spoiled but worth it!
They do each have their own crate, but not assigned. They just jump in whichever and sometimes try to be in the same one together. LOL Sometimes ours will refuse to get back in the truck after an adventure. Sort of like their way of boycotting going home. ha!

You know your dogs, you know their individual quirks and you need to take them into consideration when training. I have one that does not like to sit, so I don't make her, my other one does not like the squeak in a toy, so I don't give them. Both are trained to guns but did not like my son's noisy gun, they hid under the table shaking, the gun went in the bin. One hates a particular brush, so I don't use that brush on her. One of mine likes to be covered up at night while the other one likes the blanket along her back, but I find it half way to the kitchen in the morning. It's their quirks so I work with it. It makes training so much easier. They are wonderful dogs but also frustrating. Do it all with a smile.

Yeah you can force leash training late, but these dogs will never be happy on a leash.
On beds, I think it breaks their souls keeping them away from the pack sleeping. It's a thing, having them sleep w/ your kids is the best thing. Second to that is prolly time on the couch w/ you & a clear bed @ night. They won't like it, they're cuddle robots when not hunting.
GSPs will make you questions your skills and patience levels.
Hey one thing I have found that works with being pulled is: routing their leash from the coller around the loin and back to me so that as they pull, they get loined and she has now more easily stopped and turned when on a leash.
I have a leash that does this. I made a video about it. It works pretty well but not fool proof for sure.
