  • German Shorthaired Pointers are an incredible breed of dog. But they also come with a few myths and misconceptions. I wanted to offer some insight into these myths, so that you know the truth about owning a GSP. You are in for an incredible journey, because in my opinion, they are the BEST breed of dog.

Great video and information. We are a family of hunters out of Southeastern Arizona and have 2 GSPs who not only hunt but hike, camp and travel everywhere with us. They are an amazing breed but most of all they are the very best family pets EVER. I don't recommend the breed to anyone who does not have the time to exercise them EVERYDAY. They are high energy working animals who need not only lots of love and attention but constant exercise. I too can't imagine life without my GSPs!

We lost our beautiful old boy almost a year ago and your videos brought back lovely memories - the yodelling on car rides, the flying ears.the boinging about while running in long grass (like a Snoopy cartoon) , the total sookiness when they're at home, and the ENERGY, at least well into 'late middle age'. Here in Australia it's coming up to ANZAC Day, our national remembrance day for veterans etc. The first year in 11 years that Spike won't be 'singing along' with his muzzle raised in the air when he hears the Last Post. He was my 4th GSP, and probably my last as I don't think I can take on that energy level again (or lift a 40 kg dog, once my sons leave home!) But will always, always love them - a beautiful, elegant, goofy clown of a dog - so intelligent, and yet such a goofball. Thanks for the memories!

Greetings from the land Down Under. I agree with you on all three points. The humble GSP is the multi tool of the pooch world.
Most hunting dogs can switch on and off given the occasion/environment that they find themselves in.They soon work out if they are on a social excursion or a hunt.Being able to read and understand your GSP is very important for success. Also, a well socialised and happy GSP is a joy to own and hunt with.GSP’s are the “thinking persons” go to hunting dog/companion!I love your dogs and your channel. Cheers, Rob.

Another thing I would like to add is it's okay to own them and not hunt. Like you said, hunting is in their blood so it's important they get similar activities but simply a game of fetch along with sniffing games such as "sniff and seek" do the trick just fine. They are such an amazing breed!!!

I picked up a Black 'lab' from a rescue in the summer who turned out to be mostly German pointer. She is amazing, hugely athletic but happy to settle down after a walk on the sofa with us. She is the perfect companion for our mad Husky cross as they both have high energy but she actually helps keep him in check by rounding him up and stopping him running too far. She is the only dog I have seen who can keep pace with him. She has a little Ovcharka in her and so while she looks 100% pointer, she is on the large side. Currently about 28kg at 8 months. Fortunately, she is a softy!

I had Setters and Golden Retrievers and started late in life having hunting dogs. All of my dogs loved hunting, hiking and fishing, it was just getting out and running and playing, which they loved as much as I do. The more you spend with them, the more they are a part of the family and the more they learn about being a member of that pack. I am sure I would have loved German Shorthairs as well, I have hunted behind them, Brittany, labs and cocker spaniels. I had a Weiner mix dog as a kid and I would run him in a field chasing rabbits, as I rode my motorcycle, he loved it and I love that time I had with him.

Mine didn't hunt, except on his own, he was my best pal. He was 13 when I had to put him to rest a year ago, and I miss him terribly still. He went everywhere with me. Just got my gsp a week ago and he's the best puppy I've ever owned. Very clean too only 8 weeks old, and he only goes potty on the potty pads, and outside. Beyond smart also he's already getting basic commands down. Haven't ever owned such a clean and willing to learn/train puppy. Extremely glad I went with the gsp breed so far it's been amazing to say the least. I don't get why people say they aren't good family pets though? I have a toddler and this pup is super gentle when playing with him.

    • @ericfleetwood6744
      @ericfleetwood6744 4 роки тому +1

They are great family pets. They love children. A toddler wandered over to mine when the Latka was about 8 months old. Latka held very still so as not to bump or injure the little girl. Unfortunately, the toddler's mother turned around and saw her child petting a large dog and panicked. When the Mom ran over hysterically, the dog saw it as a threat and stepped between the child and the Mom. It took a little coaxing to reassure Latka that the lady could approach Latka's new friend and retrieve her child.
The period between about 1 and 3 years old can be a bit difficult. Most people suggest keeping them mentally challenged and well-exercised. We taught our GSP that everything has a name, and would send tell her to "Go find your ball. Go find your TENNIS ball. Go find Mommy." Once they expect things to have names it is easy to add more things or people to their knowledge base. As for exercise, some professionals suggest two hours of vigorous exercise, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some people suggest 35-40 minutes every hour, until the dog refuses to get up again. 😉 You can save that for the bad days.

He's still only 10 months old, we are still working on training him. We don't hunt.
But he is one of the best dogs I have ever owned. Loves people, loves to run, loves other dogs, loves children.

They are fantastic family dogs. They need exercise, but don't we all? As long as they get exercise, they are perfectly happy lounging around the house. They are super smart and easily trained. I've had two....and they know when there is a blanket on the couch, they can come up and snuggle, if there is no blanket, they do not...I've never found them on the couch when I come home..they know and respect the rules of the house. My Cooper LOVEs to snuggle and when he can't come up on the couch, he will make sure to have a paw touching us... or he will lean into us.
Show them love and positive reinforcement and they will respect your rules and be your buddy for life. An exceptional breed...

I have never gone hunting with my GSPs but every time I let them lose (which was at every possible opportunity) I got the feeling that they were taking me hunting. A local Gun Club had a Pheasant breeding pen hidden away in a forest, that the GSPs would always head straight to. They would sneak up on the pen even if we hadn't seen any Pheasants in months.

If I'm headed to the bed, they are 3' behind me, even with my ex they'd follow her up as well. Shorthairs can sure turn it on or off in a heartbeat, just have to be consistent with them as they are a very very intelligent and it sinks in.

Excellent points...no pun intended! I agree with you in that dogs in general - not just GSPs - are capable of SO much more than 2 diverse relationships. I have no doubt that their relationship with you children is again diverse from yours and your husband. I am also happy for your dogs that your husband hunts your "hunting breed". There are SO many other breeds out there for non-hunters. The onus remains with the breeders to place working dogs in working homes but as it has always been in our history, "cash is king". I am not a breeder but if I was, I would not sell my bird dogs to non-hunting homes...period.
Before long, "they" will beggar them up too.... or should I say, again.

I can't believe some people think GSP's (great silly puppies) should only hunt and then if they are not hunting not do any other activities. That sounds cruel given their energy levels. I have recently acquired one, a black roan, who is around 5 months now and there is no way my yard would be anything but a complete mess if I didn't exercise her off leash at least an hour a day.

LOL Ours thought she was a lap dog and would happily curl up on your lap and go to sleep if you left her. She was also the best mouser you ever saw. If our cat caught a mouse she would play with it but Cocoa would just kill them and walk away. Whats funny is she didn't have a hard mouth. Sometimes our neighbors chickens would get out and she would catch them and bring them to us but never hurt them. On drop it she would let it out to shake off it's feathers and run home. But she really thought her mission in life was to protect my handicapped wife. She would always stay between my wife and anyone she was unsure of. If she thought they were too close it was the low menacing grow. We had looters in our area going around casing homes after a hurricane, Our dog almost never barked so unless you saw her people didn't know we had a dog. My wife unlatched the door to a knock and the person slammed the door in only to find a 55 lb dog going for his face. My wife said what saved him was Cocoa growled before lunging but if there was a record for the backward broad jump he beat it. Or local police said that we wouldn't have to worry about him coming back because he would never want to find that dog in the dark. We lost her the day after New Years but she had a good life of almost 15 years. It's still too soon to think about another one.

It is hard to put in word what is to own one of these miracle canines - we try to describe it in so many ways; pros and cons. The thing is that the bond you'll have with them will prevent you to have any other breed after this. They behave like super-humans, understand, listen, observe your moods, body language, they notice the smallest changes in you and respond to it. Their attention to their human is unimaginable. If God has a dog up in the haven - it is certainly the GSP.

They are the most flexible and intelligent dogs I have ever owned. Loyal to their families and have more 'heart' than any other breed. When my last girl died at 14, I just couldn't buy another. I now have sister Black and Tans 100#, I love them but I will never ever love any dog as much as my GSPs they are something MORE. Guess you need to own and love one (or more) to understand.

3 facts about gsp's. They lick any paint they find tastey and many metals, unfixed males pee on anything. And nothing in your house is sacred to them if you can't stay on top of them for at least 3 years of training. But they are a great versatile hunting dog. Also they are great farm dogs for killing rats, mice and even woodchucks. But for heavens sake if you have porcupines around don't leave them out alone. They never learn. I have removed quills too many times to count. Oh and the same for skunks.....

My initial response is no to both, but honestly, every single dog personality is different. MOST GSPs that I know that coexist with cats, do so in an ok manner. As far as guard dogs go, mine will bark at any noise or person that comes near the home (mailman, etc), but they wouldn't ever attack IMO. Mine might lick you to death, but thats about it. But I have known 1-2 GSPs that have more aggressive tendencies, so like I said, it really depends on the temperament of your GSP (or any dog breed for that matter).

I agree with Tammy, each dog is different - but - I have owned 4, and always had cats too. In every case the cats bossed the GSPs around to a ridiculous extent. Even to the point of pathetic whines from the 30 kg dog because the 3 kg cat was sitting in front of the heater and it didn't dare to go near ...
What I would say is that the cats were usually in the house before the pup arrived. And that they were all Siamese, which have a very strong personality and quite fearless.
What worked when we introduced a kitten when our GSP was about 3: we introduced them very gradually, the kitten in his enclosed crate, a few minutes at a time, then supervised short visits, etc, till we felt sure they were OK. And even then, never left alone together if we were out. The way it worked was the kitten soon showed the large dog that the kitten was very scary and in charge.
A GSP can literally pick up an egg in its mouth without cracking it, but they do also have very strong jaws. I doubt they would deliberately harm a cat from their own household, but they might easily do it 'playing'.
All this of course depends on the GSP being well trained and know absolutely that he or she is at the bottom of the pack, with the human firmly dominant at the top. Mine once accidentally snarled and snapped at one of my teenage sons (it got a fright when he touched it, mistaking him for another dog) Spike the GSP was mortified and shamed beyond belief, but I insisted that my son take a good hour to walk him around, put him through all his commands, roll over, etc etc, to make sure he absolutely accepted he must NEVER AGAIN threaten a family member. Poor old Spike, he slunk around my son for days after! SO embarrassed. But necessary
