I've just seen a very cheap J&D bass online. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. Very useful for those like myself unable to try before buying.
Hi Paul, I just took delivery of one of these in seafoam green two days ago. It is awesome! The green is so vivid it screams 'funk'. I have added purple volume and tone knobs to complete the look. You are spot on. Build quality and tone is ace. It holds up easily against my new Squier CV 70s Jazz Bass but is lighter! I have been playing for 35yrs and this one is perhaps the most comfortable bass I have owned. Cheers. Ian.
I just went for the Surf green too - o got more than enough basses but love to have different colours. I have to say I am a fan of SX guitars - will be interesting to see how these J & D compare. All of the SX i have feel great - Tele in LPB, JB75 in translucent blue, 62 in black 5 string fretless conversion, and now a 62 Stratocaster in Vintage white (more buttercream!!) This J & D Surf Green caught my eye - £125. The also have a Sonic Blue/Daphne blue that might end up in my collection if this J&D is good.
SmashingHamster They sure are. I’m keen to try their ‘63 Precision - maybe I’ll pick one up soon and do video. Perhaps @dv247 will send me a review copy? 😁
Quote from BassChat: "I look forward to Thursday to see if I've got a gem or a dog" and later... "It's arrived. I have a gem." Same here! :) Thanks for your thorough review, Paul! I bought it in black too. It's a beauty and, more importantly, it feels and sounds awesome. Definitely one of the best basses I've had. And I'm not saying "in that price range" or "great value" or "best bang for your buck"... This bass is awesome. Period.
I recently bought a surf green bass for 85 Euro's. Couldn't be happier. I lowered the action to my liking. And it's awesome. I will do some shielding to get rid of very, very light buzz, but nothing more. I have Sire V3 and I like the J&D more.
Yep. I have the natural. Had to do a set up of course, that's a given with any bass/guitar actually, and slapped on some flats. Not wild about roundwounds as a rule. Frets are OK. Only problem I have is with the grub nuts which can be uncomfortable when I play right up to bridge and mute. Easily fixable but I like a bit of occasional pain anyway.
As a bass player I care about how it feels and how it can be made to sound (amazing what a Zoom B1 Four X can do to pickups). Labels are for musicians who care about marketing - not saying expensive guitars aren't nice but they are rarely necessary in your use case. Thanks for detailed review. Normally I round the frets off with a file in a jig I made. Wondering if the binding will get in the way of this?
I'm looking at a J&D MMB bass (Music Man Singray bass copy). It's at a similar price point to the bass you review in this video and as such I imagine the hardware and electronics are of similar quality. Whether or not it ends up being as good as I hope (or as good as your bass) if I buy it, it seems nonetheless that you have found yourself a fine instrument here It's also nice to see that I'm not the only one in the music world who is indifferent about what brand my headstock decal shows (I feel like the only one sometimes); my first 4 string bass was an EastCoast PJ4-BK bass (Fender PJ bass copy) that only cost me around £120 new, which has served me very well (the only thing that should matter)
I hear what u mean when u say bridge pickup is weak. I will do a review when I get my Sea foam green - Will measure the coil output. The SX I got recently was quite ballsy but too microphonic. I put some Ironstone Jazz Bass Alnico - really great pickups £67 for a set including hum canceller (so u can play each pickup at any volume without too.much single coil noise) I am also in the middle of fitting some Warmann rail guitar pickups on my Steinberger - those are monster output and quite interesting sound - just bottling the routing of the body. Thanks again for your reviews - hope the live pub music scene comes back soon.
I bought this J&D "gothic" matte black PJ bass 2 years ago. For the price (€129 then) it's a really good one, sleek and fast. 24 frets, all black hardware, lightweight. Recently I switched the original pickups with EMG GZR PJ's, and now it just absolutely kills... Doesn't sound like a cheap bass anymore, and even lower tunings (I tune to C standard) sound pretty clear. Never underestimate the powers of budget basses.
Thank s for sharing, What s the weight please, Harley benton make a good sounding maple neck vintage jb but it s so heavy! A deal breaker for me Is this one lighter?
coroli No problem! According to my scales it’s 8 & 3/4 pounds. You’re right, my Harley Benton PB51 weighs a ton! It’s too heavy for a long gig without a wide strap
who cares what make of instrument you play. I would swap my 'quality' fenders anyday for my 'budget' fingers to be transformed in to 'quality' digits. Your bass certainly has the looks!

Thanks for your help
Useful review, thanks for taking the time. I'm a guitarist looking to add bass playing and this looks good. Currently £127 at DV247.
12:05 you meant the twelfth fret?
Also are you a classic Beatles/punk player?
Alder body? What's the weight? Thx ✌
PLAY IT !!!!
Jack and Danny! Ha!
Do you know the weight of this? Thx
According to my bathroom scales, eight and three quarter pounds. I can easily do a two hour gig with this bass, no problem.
Great thanks.
@@PaulWilliamGibson Thank you, that helps me too, as i want to buy one of these.
Puoi fare un demo solo demo senza parlare ? Con altre tecniche

Medium I’d say. No problem going a 2 hour gig
