A bass guitar comparison without playing a single note. Brilliant
For the looks of it😆
Thanks for this review! It certainly helped me.
It is probably not a battle between fighters of the same class, they are similar, but not of the same model. However, some differences in quality between the brands became clear.
I was having some doubts when I looked for a beginner bass with some quality, I was very curious about the Harley Benton JB-75 vs the same model from J&D, and I think that almost all HB reviews were better.
Thanks again for the video! Valeu!
The Harley benton looks amazing for the price, mmm FYI Hondo was made by the Samick factory in Korea as far as I can remember. It's amazing how much guitar you get these days for very little money. As long as you're ready to spend a little time on the fret work. Cool video BTW 👍
Cheers, I didn't know About J&D, btw changing the pots are really easy, I did my telecaster recently, wasnt as bad as I expected.
I bought the J&D 5 string Jazz bass recently.I had to dress the frets as the edges were sharp. The bridge was slightly out of alignment and had to be moved, the back of the neck had to be sanded as it was too sticky and glossy and the join between the scratchplate and control plate was way off.Apart from that its fine, and is pretty good value for money given the price (£140)
Hi Paul, nice comparison. I noticed that on the PB-50 the E and G strings do not align with the pole pieces of the pickup, probably because you have replaced the bridge. I have a bass with the Wilkinson single coil and that one is very sensitive to the string position. As soon as the string moves away from the pole piece the volume drops noticably. Have you noticed a similar effect with the Roswell? If so, you might be better of with a bridge that has the correct string spacing.
Thanks Bert, glad you liked it. The bridge on the PB is the original one it cane with, having replaced it with a more authentic looking Fender type bridge the strings do indeed line up better, cheers!
I bought this J&D Gothic PJ bass. A bit of a take on the Ibanez GSR 200, I guess.
Swapped the pickups for EMG Geezer Butler pickups, although the original pickups weren't too bad, it gives the bass' overall sound a bit of extra body.
The build quality though, wow. For a €130 bass, it's lightweight, the body's a tad smaller than the Ibanez GSR200, and a little bit thicker, but, no sharp fret edges, fretboard is some sort of composite, but no trouble with that, either, and with the new pickups, sounds killer.
Hi Paul,great videos mate,,,just bought a j and d bass ,active 250 aussie ,,don't have a bad word too say,,thanks again.
floyd Lay thanks mate for the kind words, glad you like the videos, stay tuned for more 😁
I'm a bit torn between these two companies on between choosing a bass. Do you have further thoughts after you released this video on which you might recommend? Like, if someone asked you on the fly which you prefer and you had to choose immediately, which might you lean towards?
Geni Hunter Definitely J&D :)
How did you cut neck to look like a 50s fender?
Which one should I buy according to you?
Hi Paul,,I love J and D,,I have several!
Good review. I have the J&D Jazz. Cannot really fault it more the money.
How much does it weigh?
A very good Review , Thanks . They are not Expensive , and you can change something ? There are Expensive Basse , with lot of Problems to ! Than I take the First selection , and the wood is more than Okay !
Had a few Harleys and been very good, one JD that had such fret sprout I could of shaved with it😉
Hello mate! How is the weight on the J&D bass? Is it heavy? i would like to buy it but I don't enjoy heavy instruments.
Average weight, more light than heavy. A two hour gig with it was manageable
@@PaulWilliamGibson How much does it weigh?
Got a 2020 pb-50 and there is no hole in mine, actually i removed the pickguard cause i like it better that way.
Interesting video, any experience of Fazely bass guitars?
Thanks. Not personally, I think they are a brand sold by one of the ‘warehouse’ sellers? At that price point they may come from the same factories as HB, J&D etc.
@@PaulWilliamGibson cheers Paul , yes can't be that many places churning these out.
Sounds great.
Can you tell me which one is better Harley Benton or sub music man ray4?
Abishek Subba you’re not comparing like for like as the Stingray type bass is very different to the J or P type bass, but from my experience the Sub is a pretty good bass, and higher quality generally than HB.
@@PaulWilliamGibson thank you
I was confused btw the sub ray 4 (one with SUB in head stock )and ray 4
Both are of same price
Same bass I think. The next one up is the Ray34, which are excellent basses. The one I tried sounded better than my Ernie Ball MM Stingray
@@PaulWilliamGibson than you
Great review, nice to get a proper evaluation without the playing.
Electronics are a common issue on cheap Harley Benton. Potentiometers that don't really work the way people expect are almost the rule. I have observed something similar on an SC-450 Plus and on a R-458. Tone pots function between 1 and 4, the rest of their course has no audible effect. It's a cheap and fairly replacement but worth knowing.
Leo of Red hhhh
Maybe they are logarithmic ( type A, like audio)- potentiometers . They react mostly from 0 to 4-5, then till 10 very subtile. The linear pots (type B ) would react the most from 5 to 10, below 4 to 0 no more noticeable Change. Some players like the linear pots, some like the audio...
How much does the J&D weigh?
Bought a Harley Benton B-450: very very well made.
Bought the J&D 200MM: very bad soldering work. And very sharp fret ends.
Couldn‘t be the same factory.
pcpanik interesting - I’m impressed with my J&D bass but disappointed with the HB. However on the strength of my bass I bought my son a J&D Strat and it’s junk
@@PaulWilliamGibson I'm in need of a lightweight bass. So the B-450 and the 200MM work for me. But the J&D didn't work, until I re-soldered everything properly and smoothed each fret with a nail arrow. I also bought the HB HVY25 BKS Heavy Guit and the HB DC 600 VI. Both are well maid, but the DC 600 also got some smaller issues. The drive-in nuts that hold the bridge and tuning bridge did not sit properly and the pots were not screwed on properly. Small things that can be fixed easily. Sharp edges on the frets is a thing that must not be, in my opinion. Both were fine.
@@gotopcpanik but I tested a Fender Player Telecaster in a music shop - shocking fret job. I dont mind fixing this one cheap instrument but object on expensive one.
I really like SX Guitars (made a few reviews on YT) but I also got P450FL (also reviewed) and i love that guitar. Neck heavy but for £120 plus some La Bella nylon coated strings its a keeper.
I have a J&D Surf Green on order- £125. I can set basses - will work on getting low action and probably replace pickups with Ironstone, put a higher mass bridge (my assumption is it will be neck heavy), put some straplocks on and shield it.
I have a weakness for different colour basses.
Old school p bass vs j bass...
you'd better compare this J&D to the HB jb75 wich is more similar, isn't it? (very afordable price too)
😇
yvidiot Could be, but I don’t have one to compare with. The new HB Enhanced P & J basses look very good too.
Paul Gibson Music I used to have a HB jb75. very good instrument for only 138€. But the Wilkinson pickups sounded a little bit weak compared to a squier jbass.
The new HB enhanced serie looks very attractive. I hope you will test one on UA-cam cause for me, 300€ is a price level i can't exceed without any test or prior notice. 😀
Damn 15mins of talking and no demo. I would also suggest the camera a bit back to capture the basses in full.
15 minutrs of comparison and i couldn't hear a single note of any of those basses... I mean it is nice to hear opinions but, don't you think it would be nice to hear an A/B to have an idea of the sound to be able to figure it out which one it's better? hearing doesn't fail to our taste
Le Danus fair point but I’m assuming that the viewer knows what a P and a J sounds like. There is little to choose between tone for each specific type of bass, for instance the J&D Jazz in this video sounds very, very similar to my Fender Jazz Deluxe, which cost a lot more. So it comes down to build quality, component quality, set up out of the box etc, which is what this video seeks to compare.
If a good playing/sounding bass is stolen you're not out much in the funds department.
I got both of them, Harley is a piece of shit, sounds crap and the finish is not well done, on the other hand, j&d is really well finished and sound way better than it should and for its price
Still cheap basses again. Please save and buy a good instrument.
