They thought he was a country bumpkin, but he was the smartest one in the room.

Entertaining movie, but just so historically FOS. Wolf was already successful in Memphis with Sun Records and when he drove north to Chicago to move to Chess he had $4,000 in his pocket. He and Muddy were also pretty friendly, even as competitors.
figured movie probably got a few things wrong. I love it still because it introduced me to Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry and Etta James. And Bo Diddley by extension - dad loves the blues and told me a lot more about Chess Records. I try to go in with a grain of salt on hand whenever I see a 'based on real events' movie and try to remember to look the facts up after I've seen it. Still, if they make a good movie I'll still say it's a good movie in spite of the things it got wrong.

Philips said that Wolf had "the most God-awful voice you ever heard", but he still thought there was something in it. But he was antagonistic to Muddy too. N since we were trained to see Mud as the protagonist we were trained to see wolf as the bad guy. Its one thing to give whypipo a reason to not like wolf but don't give the black community reasons to hate him too.

Not every black male is gonna understand the real when its presented and far too often are young, impressionable black males are sold the narrative that Mud is the goal and Wolf is the guy tryna fuck it up. Calling that interpretation "spot on" BECAUSE the white man sees it that way is EXACTLY why I gotta problem with it and saying "the real strong black men get it" is jus divisive and exactly what they want us to do. Every black man knows that white men see us as antagonistic, but the last thing we need is black men seeing other black men as antagonistic.
Nobody painted him as an antagonist. That's just how you saw it. You can clearly see in the comments that plenty of people understood him.
