This tip is essential for any heating engineer using a flue gas analyzer, regardless of the brand. Before anything else, ensure that:
You're qualified to use the analyzer.
Your flue gas analyzer is properly calibrated.
    The battery is fully charged.
Now, let’s talk about using the flue probe correctly:
Years ago, boiler manufacturers designed flues that required you to go outside to take readings. The process was straightforward-insert the probe all the way in, which prevented drafts from affecting the results and ensured accurate readings.
Today, most boiler manufacturers have made the process more convenient. You no longer need to go outside; instead, you place the probe on the boiler’s collar at the top or directly on the flue. In some cases, there’s an elbow arrangement that lets you insert the probe all the way in.
    Here’s a critical warning:
Never fully insert the probe into the flue. Flue gases create condensation, which is full of water. If you insert the probe too far, the pump in your flue gas analyzer will draw this water through the system, damaging the sensors.
To avoid this, use a depth stopper. It ensures the probe only goes a few inches into the flue, allowing you to take accurate readings from the middle without risking water ingress.
Why is this important? If water gets into your analyzer, it can ruin the sensors. Replacing these sensors can cost anywhere from £100 to £600, depending on the model-an expensive mistake you don’t want to make!
Always follow this advice to protect your equipment and ensure reliable readings.
