I bet it's only large sharks, 17+ feet, migrating there atleast periodically to feed. Smaller adults probably can't tolerate the cold temperatures as well as the very large sharks.
Awesome video mate, love the content. Living in South Australia, GWs are endemic and you learn at a young age to not go past your waist in the water. Attacks from SA you might be interested in (if you havn't already read up on them previously) - most famous would be Rodney Fox 1963 at Aldinga (pretty crazy story and iconic photos from the attack), 29 May 1999 Tony D, bit of a mystery attack, some similarities to Malibu - one of his mates who was with him happened to be taken by a GW some years later, 16 Dec 2004 Nick P - appears to be predation, intense details of the attack, 17 Feb 2011 Peter C - attacked by 2 X sharks, previously encountered another GW 6 X months beforehand. Also there was 3-4 X fatalities in the mid 70s around a certain part of the state (Eyre Peninsula) - might be something to investigate, not aware of a reported explanation other than there were stacks of GWs back then.
I agree. Excellent video once again. The Nick P and Peter C attacks have always stuck with me. The Brad S and Ben L attacks were also similar. The bravery of the people who tried to help ....truly incredible.
Nick Peterson attack was terrible. I am a surfer from SoCal. We have sightings of juvenile white sharks at my beaches but very rarely anything over 12ft.
Alaskan here. We've known about having Great Whites for a while, some people still try and deny it saying they are Salmon Sharks, which we have a proliferation of and are cousins. However, I do remember an incident probably back somewhere near 2010 where a Great White was spotted and confirmed somewhere near Homer I believe, so they definitely do make it up here, we just do not know if it is a regular trip or not and if so the frequency of those visits.
Great show- found you yesterday & can't stop watching! I watch & post often on a few other channels ( like Sharks Happen) & I will definitely recommend your channel in my next posts - all of us look for other shark attack stories to binge on. Thanks & appreciate your hard work!✌🏼💜
So ..I remember hearing/reading that only the largest G.W.s can take the cold water up North. They head there for the larger Prey..seals, walrus, when food is less plentiful.
Hi! If they're finding evidence of the boats being upended, I'd say a GW did it. They're known to do that in documented attacks where others haven't been found in other regions with similar circumstances, so I'd say it probably wasn't the weather.
I have read a few anecdotal accounts of angry Basking sharks upending boats, but I think you're dead-on about it being a White. They commonly attack boats.
@@hollymartens8059 What's really scary is they seem to know what they want is inside the boat, so they upend them. Then you never see the people that were in them again. After hearing and reading about all these boat attacks and the GW's territory enlarging, it makes me never want to go on a boat(especially a smaller one) again!!
Y'all have all the dangerous creatures!! I love the people of Australia, and could listen to y'all talk every second of my life, but I never want to visit your country. I think I'd die of a heart attack worrying about being in danger all the time!!😂
Interesting stuff. They love the west coast of the us which is all fed by the gulf of Alaska. I can’t imagine they are spending much time there, but if they are it has to be the larger white sharks as is being reported because the juveniles cannot handle the cold water as well as the large adults.
Saw great white in Alaska. Coming into Ketchikan. Blue on top white belly. Breached right next to our cruise ship. He looked like he came up angled to see what was the massive noise in front of him . He looked then quickly moved back down changing direction away from boat. Many watching. I snapped photo and the camera was so slow it got his nose and eyes just under the surface. If I pointed it out in photo, you can see it. Lol
Blue on the back? You sure it wasn’t a big mako? I know there are white sharks in Alaska, but I’ve never heard of a white shark having any blue coloration at all. Really cool to see either way.
Another great episode m8, don't know how a GW would hunt a fish that lays flat on the bottom, only leaves the ocean floor to grab other fish? It's very well camouflaged also, I think they are there for the abundant sea mammals, but being in Alaska they run the risk of killer whales, which no GW wants. Never seen a show about GW sharks in Alaska, your the 1st. Well done fella.👌🏴
White sharks hunt rays, ling cod and smaller bottom dwelling sharks. It's easy for them to detect with their prey unsing electroreceptors in the nose of the shark. Also it's not uncommon for halibut to chase bait like herring in the intermediate water levels.
Considering the large population of white sharks in the Pacific Northwest it's easy to imagine them sliding further along the coastline to British Columbia and Alaska, as you say they'd be great hunting territory although the presence of orcas presents issues. I also believe Salmon Sharks are the great White's closest relative and if you don't get a good look at the underside can look quite similar so I suspect a couple of cases of mistaken identity over the years (although I also imagine that the people who use the water regularly in Alaska are very familiar with salmon sharks so possibly scotches my theory!)
Do you think we get great white sharks in British waters during the summer months or is it just not happening, I don't know why we don't as we have a huge amount of prey for them.
Great content 👌 👏 👍, always wondered if someone ever caught footage of a shark attacking a polar bear Kodiak or just a brown or black bear,or a moose 🤔 even deer or elk swimming to or from one of those islands in Alaska. Lol would be some amazing footage.btw love the detailed description when you explain these attacks, we definitely appreciate the time you have obviously put in to really give us a vivid picture of what actually happened 😀. I am pretty 👍 sure that the great white has hunted in just about every water way ocean and sea that its body can tolerate the temperature of the water, from what little I know it seams like they prefer colder cooler 💧 water pretty sure they have eaten or attacked a human in every part of the world, except maybe where the water is extremely cold or extremely 🔥 hot ,my guess is they prefer cooler temperatures,
gw can change the temp of their blood to warm themselves up when in colder waters n when diving deep. they also do it hunting so they get better use of their muscles .
at 6:43 where can I read more about this guy's testimony concerning his encounter? also what website are you on where you are showing on the screen the details in reference to the attacks in the length of the sharks?
I'm sure people have been eaten by white sharks in Alaska at some point; Anthropologists from British Columbia recall oral tradition stories from BC First Nations peoples called the Haida where the Elders recalled stories of seal hunting party canoes being attacked and sunk and one or more passengers being carried off. Also, here's another bit of info from Collier: the most northerly confirmed observation of a white shark was in the Northeast Bering Sea on the following coordinates: 178 degrees 56 inches West,; 59 Degrees 56 inches North; Any idea where those coordinates plot out?
Fascinating. Yeah I think I read that also about the Bering Sea. I just plotted these coordinates and its right on the Bering Sea ocean ridge line 241 miles east of Khatyrka Xatbipka in Russia on a heading of 124.09 degrees.
I believe I originally saw it on Nat Geo channel, and one of my Maori brothers confirmed it. (I'm Chippewa ,we became friends during the Roosebud Sioux stand off for clean water.)
It’s only a few populations of killer whales that prey on sharks, and to my knowledge no encounters have been witnessed in Alaska. Even if they were, GWs coexist with killer whales in other areas. The white sharks in Alaska are also very large, as their body mass helps them handle the cold. Killer whales have been known to attack white sharks up to 15 feet, but an 18-20 foot shark is double the weight and much more powerful and experienced than a 15 footer. My guess is those really big GWs and the KWs just avoid each other.
Good video man thanks ! I live in British Columbia and we have thousands of Whales of every species and they die here and White sharks feed on them all the time not sure why. Can’t find a photo ? Anyway 🙏🇨🇦
I bet it's only large sharks, 17+ feet, migrating there atleast periodically to feed. Smaller adults probably can't tolerate the cold temperatures as well as the very large sharks.
correct
Great whites can swim in cold water no problem .

I saw a video on YT with a bunch of tourists on a fishing boat when a monster GW investigates the party, and it's off the coast of Alaska

Good episode. Guess some old big ones that can tolerate the low temperatures migrate there during summer from California.

I agree I think they are seeing large salmon sharks
Salmon sharks are brownish on top not grey
I'm from Sitka and can promise there are great whites up there from time to time because i've seen them caught
Great whites in Alaska,Oregon,Seattle,New York Maine,Russia,Japan,Turkey ,Greece,Slovenia,France,Spain,UK,Hawaii

Yes I think its happened in the past, if not the present. We just need a credible sighting.

Definitely cooler temperate waters where there is more prey. Alaska has so much diversity it makes sense it would have good populations of GWS's.
@AsMoth Case Files great video but wouldn't great White's be under threat from killer whale's in Alaska.

Hello.. How are you.. Thank you for the shark attacks
halibut rarely get that big anymore. the big ones have all been fished out.

@@asmothcasefiles8368 thanks! That's way the heck up there. Clearly white sharks don't seem to have a problem with cold water.
Just found this channel. Looks interesting so far...except the annoying "snorting sound". Try blowing your nose then record.

They come from Russia...and btw there was an attack on a scientist on an island of Antarctica, and he had his arm bit off.
Hi Lisa you have a reference for this? Antarctica one? I've never heard about this. Thanks for the comment.

I'm surprised with great White's being in alaskan waters with the large orca population on the area.

GWs grow to about 23 feet long….not bigger….
