I just started watching the drumeo videos. I'm honestly blown away how they do this. I've played the guitar for three decades now, and at time i have trouble working out the time signature when i can hear the drums, let alone with the drum track removed.
His pace on the chorus made me want to get up and dance😂Awesome drummer

The Bad Plus did a few interesting Nirvana covers. They can be an acquired taste, but they are brilliant. I've seen them twice!

Congrats on 500K!!! The most interesting thing about that was when he said that the drums were much funkier than he expected. Dave G said that Nevermind drumming was inspired by funk drumming.
There's nothing like a proper jazz kit with a tiny lil kick. A well tuned kit that size is so incredibly musical.

So perfect. I watched this video a few days ago, and I love the idea of this kind of video. Best of of all, it shows the songwriting possibilities and mindsets of drummers approaching songs that are well known - meaning, well known forms (which is a gigantic part of the entire jazz idiom from swing to bebop to everything between and after) - and I think that's a hugely important thing for musicians online to be able to see. It sort of lifts the veil from what we think of as an audience as a concrete thing, to something that is a process of discovery. It lets us discover what we thought we already knew and gives us a means to reimagine it, and thereby expand our own imaginative horizons.
Love that you decided to cover something like this. Your love of music is infectious as always, Justin. Cheers!

I think this also compliments Daves drumming... probably every other rock drummer would do the approach this jazz drummer did on the chorus...but dave made it actually jazzy/Bonham esque..my favourite nirvana song

These videos are interesting. I do find it very hard to believe though that drummers of an old enough age, haven't heard an extremely popular song from a ubiquitous band that came out over 30 years ago.
Yes please to vlogs! All of us who are 'just punters' would love to see more of the back stage/behind the scenes stuff. I'd love to see inside a tour bus when it wouldnt affect other people. You are good at engaging people so yes to roadies and team members. The writing process too... would love all of this. But please dont stop the song deconstruction- Ive learnt so much from this and feel I finally know how to really listen to music! PS Happy New Year!

Hi Justin. I was supposed to be heading to your Edinburgh gig earlier this week but my appendix decided to try to kill me last weekend and I was in hospital. Literally gutted that I couldn't make it - Permission to Land is one of favourite albums and was hoping to catch it live. Cheers and aw the best!!

I saw this Dumeo video when it was posted a couple weeks ago and a very similar reaction. The double-time playing during the chorus almost accentuates the sardonic tone of the lyrics, once you get over the initial awkwardness of it.
These Drumeo clips are awesome. I've been watching them for a while and they very entertaining. They normally use people and music from opposite spectrum's. Great idea

it's as much testament to the talent of Dave Grohl, I mean if this guy played fairly similar to the original then Dave must have done what the song needed. I'm not much of a drumming fan, but Dave Grohl is definitely my favourite, his work with Queens of the Stoneage is just god mode, beastly, amazing.

"Normal" time sounded great! Especially with the switch back to half time on verses. Makes me wonder what actual double time would sound like on that song.
Pretty cool! I’ve gotta watch more of those drum videos. My opinion is that he, by drumming double time, unknowingly (?) made it more of a Foo fighters song
I was asked by my drum teacher what kind of drums i wanted to learn I said jazz - after jazz everything else is simple and lazy. Bonzo and Neil Peart were my drum lords of rock, oh and Danny Carey and Mike Portnoy. But I have a library of stuff by Hal Blaine, Joe Morello and Buddy Rich.

It's funny you mentioned the gap band, Grohl has said that a lot of his nirvana drumming borrowed heavily from them.

I meant to send you this link. Honestly, I was a bit surprised when the Julliard Drummer Insisted on coming off half time for the chorus. It may be my familiarity, but there's no time change in the chorus of a pretty slow song.$/$ is fine, but I do love chop time on many songs. Wonder if Rufus has seen it?
I enjoyed the musician, but non-drummer, observations that Justin made. For example, pointing out the dynamic differences in a single roll.
I have watched that video previously. I loved how the drummer says that he didn't know how "funky" Dave Grohl was on the drums.

I suggested this on your last Drumeo reaction. I may not care for Nirvana, but it's interesting what he did with the drums. Ulysses Owens has been featured on the channel before. It's interesting how some approach listening to a song whether it be just jumping right, writing out charts, etc.. Some don't do charts as they never learned how.
Next, check out Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett. Sugarfoot has worked with the likes of Elton John, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson's, Michael Jackson, Rick James, Quincy Jones, George Michael Janet Jackson, and many others. He goes back a long way with the Jacksons. I will tell you that he does a Linkin Park song. Next Drumeo video for sure.
