Love that Justin Hawkins is a professional vocalist and guitarist and novice drummer, yet his observation and take on the drums is spot on. He totally understands it and that’s what makes a well rounded musician. Fun video!
I just started watching the drumeo videos. I'm honestly blown away how they do this. I've played the guitar for three decades now, and at time i have trouble working out the time signature when i can hear the drums, let alone with the drum track removed.
Justin, you are 100% correct! Drumeo is effing ace! I love the concept & the way the channel gets us ALL involved! The passion is beautiful x It’s super lovely watching you watching them! (I think that’s a possible lyric) x Big kisses of love xx ❤️❤️❤️💋💋🐈🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈🐈👍🌭 xxx
🎉Many congratulations for your well-deserved 500k subscribers!!!🎉 What a better day to celebrate this milestone than on a Friday night!!!🥳 Keep going!❤️ Have a great weekend everyone!👋
Yeah, I knew he'd smash this. Ulysses is such an incredible player. Have been a fan of his since he recorded with a friend of mine about ten years back.
Congrats on 500K!!! The most interesting thing about that was when he said that the drums were much funkier than he expected. Dave G said that Nevermind drumming was inspired by funk drumming.
So perfect. I watched this video a few days ago, and I love the idea of this kind of video. Best of of all, it shows the songwriting possibilities and mindsets of drummers approaching songs that are well known - meaning, well known forms (which is a gigantic part of the entire jazz idiom from swing to bebop to everything between and after) - and I think that's a hugely important thing for musicians online to be able to see. It sort of lifts the veil from what we think of as an audience as a concrete thing, to something that is a process of discovery. It lets us discover what we thought we already knew and gives us a means to reimagine it, and thereby expand our own imaginative horizons. Love that you decided to cover something like this. Your love of music is infectious as always, Justin. Cheers!
Dude, I've never come to the conclusion that I like someone so fast. This guy both sounds and is intelligent. Cool accent and great personality. I'm happy you're able to do what you love, because you're a great inspiration to me!
Scott's Bass Lessons just did one of these for bass (obviously). Sean Hurley played bass on the Foo Fighters' The Pretender after hearing it for the first time.
Yes please to vlogs! All of us who are 'just punters' would love to see more of the back stage/behind the scenes stuff. I'd love to see inside a tour bus when it wouldnt affect other people. You are good at engaging people so yes to roadies and team members. The writing process too... would love all of this. But please dont stop the song deconstruction- Ive learnt so much from this and feel I finally know how to really listen to music! PS Happy New Year!
You could have been in those beat box classes Mr mouth drums!😂 I watched this video previously on Drumeo because I am a HUGE fan of the channel. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your fluency with drum work is impressive! Thanks for your take!
I think this also compliments Daves drumming... probably every other rock drummer would do the approach this jazz drummer did on the chorus...but dave made it actually jazzy/Bonham esque..my favourite nirvana song
These Drumeo clips are awesome. I've been watching them for a while and they very entertaining. They normally use people and music from opposite spectrum's. Great idea
Hi Justin. I was supposed to be heading to your Edinburgh gig earlier this week but my appendix decided to try to kill me last weekend and I was in hospital. Literally gutted that I couldn't make it - Permission to Land is one of favourite albums and was hoping to catch it live. Cheers and aw the best!!
Justin, dude! Congrats on 500K, you adorable smart arsed bastard! Amazing. There is nothing more hilarious than listening to a jazz person trying to play rock, amirite?! You do more good for more people than you can ever know. I may just get drunk FOR you tonight! PS. Couldn't get drunk for you on Fri. nite, so I did it Sat. nite instead. Bon Soir
I saw this Dumeo video when it was posted a couple weeks ago and a very similar reaction. The double-time playing during the chorus almost accentuates the sardonic tone of the lyrics, once you get over the initial awkwardness of it.
These videos are interesting. I do find it very hard to believe though that drummers of an old enough age, haven't heard an extremely popular song from a ubiquitous band that came out over 30 years ago.
"Normal" time sounded great! Especially with the switch back to half time on verses. Makes me wonder what actual double time would sound like on that song.
@@erikspooner6518 a guy posing as JH offers guitars as appreciation for watching. If you contact him for a guitar, he asks for a donation. It looked that he deleted the scam message when he saw the warning. He’s been here before. A few ppl fell for it.
He comes back with his full band and does a jazz version of a different Nirvana song. ua-cam.com/video/3pYHCGYJbw0/v-deo.html It's amazing and totally worth the watch.
I just came across these videos a few weeks ago when Chad Smith did it to a 30 Seconds to Mars song and he nailed it on his first take which was amazing. Would be fun to see you react to that one.
Pretty cool! I’ve gotta watch more of those drum videos. My opinion is that he, by drumming double time, unknowingly (?) made it more of a Foo fighters song
Jazz is so fun to play because every one gets a solo welll the kind I played this dude had a tiny 🎷 and the jazz organ it was so fun .I that guy is awesome 🎉impressive for sure the roll 🎉
it's as much testament to the talent of Dave Grohl, I mean if this guy played fairly similar to the original then Dave must have done what the song needed. I'm not much of a drumming fan, but Dave Grohl is definitely my favourite, his work with Queens of the Stoneage is just god mode, beastly, amazing.
I was asked by my drum teacher what kind of drums i wanted to learn I said jazz - after jazz everything else is simple and lazy. Bonzo and Neil Peart were my drum lords of rock, oh and Danny Carey and Mike Portnoy. But I have a library of stuff by Hal Blaine, Joe Morello and Buddy Rich.
I would love to see you react to Canadian punk legends Nomeanesno. specifically something from the album “Wrong”. I enjoy your insight into music and wish you were doing live shows here in Canada.
@UCZ14s_l9emUXSZNOF6MUxtg hi justin, I really enjoy watching your videos, and hearing your opinions on certain artists. you are such a tonic with your wit, sarcasm, gorgeous face and are a lovely genuine down to earth guy. Thank you for your brilliant music which I listen to every day, especially "holding my own" ♥️ I'm so gobsmacked that I've been picked by you to receive 🎸. Thank you soo much that's really made my day 😊 . ♥️ you 🥰🥰
I meant to send you this link. Honestly, I was a bit surprised when the Julliard Drummer Insisted on coming off half time for the chorus. It may be my familiarity, but there's no time change in the chorus of a pretty slow song.$/$ is fine, but I do love chop time on many songs. Wonder if Rufus has seen it?
3:48 Dave Grohl actually said he took that from Gap Band lmao Another fun one was Jordan Rudess (dream theater) hearing Beyonce/Jay-Z New York, with no keys. He made it something completely different.
I suggested this on your last Drumeo reaction. I may not care for Nirvana, but it's interesting what he did with the drums. Ulysses Owens has been featured on the channel before. It's interesting how some approach listening to a song whether it be just jumping right, writing out charts, etc.. Some don't do charts as they never learned how. Next, check out Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett. Sugarfoot has worked with the likes of Elton John, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson's, Michael Jackson, Rick James, Quincy Jones, George Michael Janet Jackson, and many others. He goes back a long way with the Jacksons. I will tell you that he does a Linkin Park song. Next Drumeo video for sure.
Thanks for checking it out and sharing Justin!!

They did it!!! 🙂 Now we will start to count down to a million 😀
Before to end the year!🎉
Now please react to the whole Jazz band improvising a Nirvana song, this is PURE gold!
I’m not a drummer, I have the gross motor movement of a landlocked octopus. But I LOVE watching Drumeo!
Love that Justin Hawkins is a professional vocalist and guitarist and novice drummer, yet his observation and take on the drums is spot on. He totally understands it and that’s what makes a well rounded musician. Fun video!
Rufus is great, I enjoyed your chat with him. Would definitely watch another.

Truth about dynamics! The spaces in between and louder and softer is critical to next level musicianship.
There's nothing like a proper jazz kit with a tiny lil kick. A well tuned kit that size is so incredibly musical.
We want to do one of these with Rufus! 😈

The Bad Plus did a few interesting Nirvana covers. They can be an acquired taste, but they are brilliant. I've seen them twice!

Chad Channing actually wrote the drums for this song 😊
Thanks for tipping me off to this. I liked the original song and the drum track, but this alternate drumming track was really great as well
Gotta love a drummer that has chops and doesn't overplay on his bass drum. Sweet!
"jazz ... yeah....." Thanks for putting words on my thoughts.

Congrats, Justin on 500k subs. 🎉 Enjoyed the drumeo both your mouth drumming and the jazz drummer.

Great gig tonight in Norwich, loving the Knobbly knees
I totally agree. Jazz drummers are the best and especially those that played RnR back in the early days. John Densmore being my favourite 🥁🚪🚪

Congrats 500k bro

Love this

That totally rocked in the jazz way
It's funny you mentioned the gap band, Grohl has said that a lot of his nirvana drumming borrowed heavily from them.
