      His cover of their song "Forever" is also really good. I'm NOT saying better than the original - before anyone attacks me - but I like both versions quite a bit. John's version is more romantic and hopeful, where the Beach Boys version is a lot darker and moody. I love them both for different reasons.

    Lex just allowed me to realize something cool. Check this out: I'd previously noted that Brad found it odd that the songs on one album could have such different feels, because he was used to buying songs one at a time and forming playlists for certain moods or activities. Back in the day, people made cassette work-out tapes too. But when it came to a playlist that suited the weather, or the day's cultural zeitgeist, it was the Disc Jockeys on radio that were creating our mood playlists. And in any given hour, they would touch on each type of state of mind, so that no matter which state you were in, there would eventually be some songs that 'spoke to you.' Playlists are fine and better suited to some situations. But the unexpected nature of the radio still holds a lot of charm. Life today lacks a sense of the unexpected--of joyful discovery. Having a DJ surprise us by plugging into us through some song we've never heard before, still feels like a really meaningful type of serendipity that would be impossible to create via an intentional playlist.

    • @Jahera411
      @Jahera411 2 роки тому +4

      I get what you're saying I have few playlists and it's mostly my local cultural music soca, calypso, reggae, dancehall. But the thousands of songs on my phone I always have them play randomly. The one thing I don't like about UA-cam is that they attempt to play over what you like and rarely introduce new songs to you, which is why I enjoy these reaction videos you never know what you're going to get

    • @armchairgravy8224
      @armchairgravy8224 2 роки тому +3

      Oh, yeah. Radio got broken somehow in the last 20 years. It used to be the format to catch something you'd never listen to otherwise and be pleasantly surprised. Now it plays stuff you've already heard 10K times or stuff you'd never listen to for a damn good reason--i.e. it's boring, whiny, commercial pap designed to appeal to nitwits. It's why I listen to Pandora instead of radio now. It's why I'm watching reaction videos. Seeing a fresh reaction to a song can make it new again. In summary, you are correct and I heartily agree with the views espoused.

    • @brushstroke3733
      @brushstroke3733 2 роки тому +3

      Your comment deserves more likes! Radio is and was awesome. You're right, there's a magic in the synchronicity of tuning in to hear the right song at the right time without planning it. I hardly ever listen to music anymore because I have to actively choose what to listen to on a song by song basis - it's tiresome. Playlists are almost always just the most popular hits, or quickly become the same thing repeated over and over.

    • @2dashville
      @2dashville 2 роки тому +2

      Waiting for a song you like to be played on the radio was kinda tricky. We had three rock stations and flipping between them to listen to the song that you like the best or sometimes the one you hated the least. The worst feeling was to flip it to the station just to hear your favorite song just ending. 😩

Darlin' was released in 1967, so the Beach Boys had matured in their sound. Take a listen to Darlin'. I really enjoy it. I'm glad that you reviewed Kokomo. I love that Lex loves this. I recently was having a snobby talk with a friend about Brian Wilson and how good The Beach Boys were, both of us being all high and mighty about our superior music tastes, and he said something negative about Kokomo and it snapped us out of it with how pissed I got 😂

    Hello. This song reminds me of my little brother who graduated from high school in 1993. This was his class song. He died of multiple heart attacks on 1/27/21 at only 45 years old. I usually avoid hearing it, but thought that a fresh POV might make it less heart-wrenching. It did, so thanks!
