1. They are the best vocal harmony group in my life time. There are many great harmony groups, BeeGees, Overlays, Righteous Bros, Temps, Tops ... but it's the Beach Boys they are compared to
They were the soundtrack of summer for decades and wrote so many fun and good time songs, I can't imagine the 60s or 70s without them on the radio. Bryan Wilson was a genius and was the one most behind classic albums that influenced everyone, including the Beatles. They even made us old hippies and metal heads smile! Try In My Room for a slice of their genius. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
This old hippie agrees! Beach Boys made us smile. I remember going to a car show back around 65 with Dad. Very exciting to see the actual "Little Deuce Coupe!"
Sad but true. Like that "Chaise longue" rubbish for instance. It's like people developed an allergy to melody and harmony. Or maybe it's just become old-fashioned. Postmodernism I guess.
The music of The Beach Boys always brings the joy. The harmonies are so beautiful and clear. Very uplifting. My Daddy loves them and I was raised listening to their music. I love how the song praises all different kinds of women, and in so many words says "No offense, all of you girls are great. But we're sticking with our homegirls from Cali". 😆
tight harmonies is what the Beach Boys were known for. not just harmonies, but blood harmonies. when people who are closely related, like the Beach Boys were: brothers plus a cousin and a friend, you get spectacular harmonies. add to that the creative force of Brian Wilson behind it and you get unforgettable songs that are very easy on the ears.
Beach Boys Mike Love and Brian Wilson wrote this song celebrating the women of California. Along with surfing and cars, girls were a common topic in many of The Beach Boys songs, and part of the California mythos that was so enticing to young people in other parts of America. Wilson wrote the music, and Love came up with the lyrics. Regarding his way with words, Love told us: "Ever since I can remember I've always been intrigued by poetry and literature. So that's always been something that I've immersed myself in since childhood. I'd always get really good grades in English literature and American literature and all that kind of thing. Whereas my math skills weren't exactly upgraded." (Here's our full interview with Mike Love.) Brian Wilson said of this song when he spoke to Goldmine in 2011: "I came up the introduction first. I'm still really proud of that introduction. It has a classical feel. I wrote the song 'California Girls' in the same key as the introduction. It took me some time. I wanted to write a song that had a traditional country and western left hand piano riff, like an old country song from the early '50s. I wanted to get something that had kind of a jumpy feeling to it in the verses." Structurally, this uses a contrasting verse-chorus form. >> Lead vocals on this song were by Mike Love, but you can also hear Bruce Johnston on the track along with Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine. Johnston was brought in to tour with the group when Brian Wilson decided to stay off the road, and this was his first vocal appearance on a Beach Boys song. Drummer Hal Blaine and bass player Carol Kaye played on this. They were two of the first-call Los Angeles studio musicians known for working with Phil Spector and playing on many hits of the era. According to Kaye, Brian Wilson, who was himself a bass player, always had the bass parts written out for her, and "California Girls" was the only song where she was able to get a lick in that Brian didn't write. She says the bass part is reminiscent of a country song called "Tumbling Tumbleweeds." Other musicians to play on this track include: Jerry Cole - guitar Billy Strange - guitar Howard Roberts - guitar Lyle Ritz - acoustic bass Leon Russell - piano Al DeLory - organ Steven Kreisman - saxophone Jay Migliori - saxophone Jack Nimitz - saxophone Roy Caton - trumpet Frank Capp - vibraphone
@@randytorres8211 Have you seen the movie called the wrecking crew it’s a wonderful great movie it was done by the son of ….. I can’t remember his name now anyway it’s a great movie
Actually, this isn't "celebrating the women of California"... It's celebrating the women from all over the U.S.A., and wishing they could all be in California.
California Girls was one of the Beach Boys' biggest hits, & that's saying A LOT!!! God Only Knows is my favorite. Wouldn't It Be Nice, In My Room, & the iconic Good Vibrations, & even Kokomo, from 1988, are also among the greatest of the BBs. Almost all their songs are great!!! And now that you've heard this, you should listen to The Beatles' song, Back In The USSR. That rocking song was Paul's tribute to Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys, & the inspiration he received from California Girls is easy to spot!! Listen & enjoy!!!
Yes, Back in the USSR would be a great follow up. Especially considering it was written during the Cold War when the Soviets were isolated behind the Iron Curtain
Just love this song and vibe from the Beach Boys...makes me feel very nostalgic. Lex getting her groove on with pure joy is priceless. Thanks for this fun reaction guys😊
Man, that intro is just one of the greatest musical phrases I've ever heard. I could listen to it over and over again, so addictive. Apparently that was the first melody that came into Brian Wilson's head after he'd been dropping acid for the first time. He had to go through an excessive phase of childhood trauma flashbacks first after it had kicked in though.
Possibly the most glorious opening in the history of pop/rock music. The genius of Brian Wilson. FINALLY got a smile out of Brad. Only THE BEACH BOYS could do that! Next, do "The Little Girl I Once Knew," from the same era. Great song structure!
One of the top 2 or 3 introductions in rock history. It puts you on the coast and the beaches. An incredible creation. It transport us to a place and time. No samples... no pitch correction... no software effects... real drums and guitars... real music.
Exactly. I've always said they worked insanely hard to make their music sound so clean and effortless. It almost feels like it just came into existence out of thin air, but behind the scenes, they put so much effort and thought into every single aspect of their sound.
I can't begin to tell you how damn jealous of you I am lol. I was born in 85, grew up in a boring small town in the middle of nowhere, I can't even fathom how awesome that would have been to get to experience that era and culture firsthand like that.
They were about 10 yrs before my time.. but damn.. driving from my home down to the SoCal beaches with my friends? The Beach Boys on the car stereo were downright MANDATORY!
One of the greatest, happiest songs of all time. I also live in California and agree - I wish all those beautiful women from around the country and world were here! There are a lot of lovely women here already, but still, a garden can never have too many flowers.
It's a feel good ode to the ladies we love! I was born and raised and always lived in coastal Southern California......and grew up hearing The Beach Boys....they hit home for me!
It was as good as music could get when all their music first came out. I had just gotten a transistor radio when the Beach Boys came out and this song was certainly a favorite for everyone! Just some good ‘ole wholesome music!
I know there not everyone’s cup of tea, but the beach boys were so unique in many ways, the vocal harmonies, the arrangements, the melodies, in some ways they really were in a league of their own. If you could bottle sunshine into a song, you’d get the beach boys.
The guys in red and/or orange are all brothers. The short guy in white, Hal, toured with lead composer Brian Wilson until retirement as did his son who would hit the high notes live.
Good to see Lex getting so much joy from this, imagine what it was like back in 1965 when I was 18 we would spend all day surfing then off to the Surf Club dances in the evening ,Australia was a great place to grow up and the Beach Boys music how good it was. Peace out.

Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “Help Me Rhonda”, “Barbara Ann” and “Little Deuce Coupe”!!!
Their harmonies where brilliant!
They basically combined Doo-wop music with Rock N Roll and came up with a winner.
