I like this type chart however it needs some change:
-fire should resist grass in order to keep the starters triangle
-the dragon gimmic is too RNG, so it should be replace with something like "immune to intimidate
-the steel type gimmic should be something like Multiscale but slitly weaker (it takes 2/3 of the damage when full HP), also it need at least one super effective attack, otherwise moves like bullet punch would be completley useless.
-psychic types should be immune to Sleep (or just hypnosis) because smart people have an horrible sleep schedule and they can't be hypnotized
-also, fixing the type interactions is only part of the solution: every type should have a respective status/weather/terrain and the already existing ones should be reworked.

I can vibe with most of these changes as a purist, except a few.
First, I think every type should be able to deal supereffective damage to one other type that isn't itself. It's my big problem with normal, my smaller problem with dragon, and now my problem with this version of steel. The normal problem is offset by having no weaknesses along with no strengths, so I'll let that one slide because it's very interesting. My fix to steel would be to give it the single advantage against fairy, since fey being weak to iron is a real thing in folklore (and fairy's weakness that makes the most sense) so it can deal supereffective damage to one type, and the type that makes the most sense. Making steel weak to dragon would solve my dragon problem as well.
My other problem is fire not resisting grass. I get grass needed help, but it (in my opinion) makes it objectively the best starter type (within the context of the type triangle), since it isn't resisted by its weakness unlike the other two.

So as a bench mark for how “good” a type chart is I like to do a Shedinja test (this means nothing and literally just because I kind of want to see if Shedinja would be op), Bug is weak to Fire, Flying, and Rock. With Ghost being weak to itself and Dark we get Shedinja being weak to five types, all of them being the same as the current type chart. Good job!

7:00 This is something I thought about for my own creature collector. However, instead of affecting STAB, it affects the weaknesses and resistances. Basically, the secondary type only affects half as much as the primary type.
For example: Lapras is Water/Ice while Spheal is Ice/Water. If they are hit with an Electric move, Lapras would take 2x damage while Spheal would take 1.5x damage. However, the opposite is true with another attacking type. Lapras would take 1.5x damage from Fighting moves while Spheal would take 2x damage.
With this change too, it causes 4x weaknesses to automatically be 3x and 0.25x resistances to become 0.375x making double weak not as squishy and double resist not as tanky. It would also make the difference between what is the primary and secondary types matter more. I've never understood why two Pokémon have the same types but in a different order, just feels arbitrary.
Solid video as always man! Keep it up!

So I tried doing some of the maths on this new take on immunity. Of the 171 type combinations, 79 now have immunity to at least one type. Rock/Ground and Steel/Poison are now super OP, being immune to three seperate types (Fire/Electric/Poison and Grass/Poison/Fairy respectively) Imagine fighting Brock with Charmander or Pikachu now haha Amazing!
On the other side, the only Official Pokemon with Psychic Immunity is Lokix. I guess Psychic is back to being OP. And Kyurem is immune to dragon which is kinda... thematically fitting...

Also Pokémon like lucario already have an ability for being immune to flinching plus that feels a tad bit too strong compared to the other bonuses aswell considering how much more common flinching is to the other statuses for the most part. Also it’s incredibly ironic that you somehow made dragon types BETTER than before due to the natural ability like how could ANYONE think that’s a good idea?????? Just think about Pokémon like dragapult or hydreigon ANY dragon type is now a massive threat because they could just get a free speed boost after a kill or an attack boost on a fast physical sweeper I mean just imagine if Baxcaliber got a speed boost after a kill? Who cares if you nerfed it in other ways that’s just a random chance disaster waiting to happen.

@@froopyart the point of those moves where they aren’t strong in the first place such as acid spray or nuzzle is that they trade the power for a good confirmed effect such as a sharp stat lower or confirmed paralysis so they already don’t care about dealing damage hence why being resisted doesn’t matter to them in the first place therefore why they get crunched by the change. I should also clarify that the point of dealing any damage in the first place when we already have moves like thunder wave or metal sound and stuff is that it would stop things such as sturdy or a focus sash from activating even if it only does one damage hence why these moves are preferable, they also usually show up on Pokémon like emolga who already is behind stats wise and those such things.

After 1 year making the old changing the type chart video froopy art still don't get why fairy is super effective against fighting.
It's a very valid and simple reason.
Fairy is Pokémon version of the magic type.
Magic will be able to beat any professional fighters and raw brood strength.
Is like the fight scene with ancient one Vs hulk in endgame.
    Or another example
A powerful wizard Vs a strong barbarian.
    Wizard>barbarian .
    Magic > strength
    Similar to psychic>fighting.
Psychic is also a similar form of magic. Psychic> fighting
Fairy should keeps its super effective damage against fighting.

The project is currently shelved, but for my own creature collector how I manage a "duel type effectiveness" is through combos, not in the sense of a chain of attacks, but in the sense of combining two moves to make one. If you lets say combine two Mechanical Type moves you'll get a 1.2x damage modifier, but if you combine lets say a Material Type and a Fire Type move, one of which is neutral to water and one that is viable to it, it will come out as a super effective attack. This system I feel works pretty good for getting you to not only use a diverse set of mono and duel types, but also use the combo system itself. Not sure how this would work with Pokémon though since combos like these are kind of game changing

What if primary typing affects how often a stab move activate a bonus effect or effects a bonus effect (such as stat drops, status conditions, self healing even if its just a 1.2× modifier) so if a pokemon is bug rock, it gets an effect boost from moves like bug buzz (a 10% defense drop becomes a 12% def drop and string shot drops 2 stages instead of 1), and if vice versa, rock bug, rockslide increases flinch chance and rock polish would increase speed by 3 stages instead of 2. That or just increase the accuracy of moves used by the primary typing.

Mathematically interesting, and a fun thought experiment. But in terms of teachability and practical gameplay, may Arceus never let these changes happen.
Stapling a highly conditional if/then statement onto your 1.25x STAB change that reverts it to 1.5x if and ONLY if the OTHER type you DIDN'T attack with is also super effective? Do you see how many words it takes just to half-explain that?
3x damage is more mathematically reasonable than 2x but it's painfully unintuitive unless everything else is converted to an add/subtract system around it.
Visualizing 2x1.25 mentally is a significantly bigger ask than 2x1.5, assuming this is all still multiplicative. Even if the math is being automated by a game engine, it should feel accessible to the target audience.
And the absurdity of the existing immunity mechanic is part of the fun. A Water-type being immune to electric is funny and has good game feel. Ultimately [Fun>Balanced] in game design.
It's also worth noting X-factors unique to practical application, most notably moves. In RBY competitive, 4 of the 5 Ice-types are viable in OU. 90% accurate STAB Blizzard is a big part of that. Meanwhile Earthquake makes Ground a fundamentally privileged type in most metas.
But I won't comment on the actual type chart changes, since many of those interactions are largely subjective anyway. If GF had arbitrarily made Fire weak to Ice then players would've come up with justifications for it all the same. I mainly disagree with the "this children's game needs more convoluted and internally inconsistent math" segment of the presentation.

The only major problem with making a balanced type chart is that it sort of "closes off" said chart, as adding a new type would throw things out of balance and you'd effectively need to start from square 1 if you wanted to keep the balance. This doesn't really matter if you're perfectly fine with the set of types we've already got, but some people prefer the type chart being more open-ended.

    • @froopyart
      @froopyart  3 місяці тому

Unfortunately, the spread sheet is not set up for additional types. If you have added additional rows or columns, they will be missing the equations used to calculate everything. Double clicking on an existing type's cell will show you what the equation is approximately, but it needs to match the new types corresponding row/columns. This is too complex for me to explain, but if you want to study the chart and equations to try to figure it out you may be able to get a new type to work, but I will warn you that the equations are a little complex.

Personally I heartily disagree with the idea everything should be balanced by type. I like that you can have types that are stronger or weaker and then balance them with stats, abilities, moves, etc. When I redid the type chart I made it even a little more unbalanced making Dragon and Steel slightly stronger. I removed fairy (replaced with Arcane which is similar to your normal by hitting everything but dragon and steel for neutral. Dragons actually all absorb arcane as if they had a flash fire like ability), steel became a new weakness for dragon, and steel and dragon were the only types strong against Arcane. Otherwise I believe all I added was poison is supereffective against fighting, ice is strong vs rock and weak to ground (this is purely because I work in environmental ed and ice messes up rocks while it mostly is ignored by soils), bug is immune to psychic/confusion.
Besides that primarily I'm 50/50 on the mono vs dual stab. its interesting but idk. I could never remove immunity. I REALLY like it. I generally feel pokemon needs more defense and less offense because one good hit with an attacking pokemon can win most fights.

While this idea was fun, this would no doubt throw the balance out of whack for people who are used to the original type chart, like myself. Like why does Ice super effective against Dark?
I'll probably try to see what happens if I used the chart but made it more realistic in what would be able to hit what. Like how Poison would just wreck a lot of the types.

Now. ive watched the whole video, and made notes on what I personally didnt seem right. everything not mentioned in the coming textbook of a comment seems - at the very least - good.
the first thing im not really sure about: the making that, instead of x4 resists we'd have immunities. i dont like for example, that flygon/garchomp are entirely immune to fire aswell as electric. i dont quite know how to think on ferrothorn being immune to fairy either. kingabit would be immune to ice. that would throw alot of the current balance off. i think it would also just encourage to run as many immunities as possible, which could get annoying fast
second, i never got behind why bug resisted fighting. if anyone were to karate chop a bug, that wouldnt end well, even more when that person is a skilled blackbelt.
i also dont really get the idea that bug minds work differently than ours, so then their minds are resistant to mental attacks. it seems like a stretch to give bug another resistance.
also bugs immunity to taunt would make setup sweepers, like for example volcarona, very strong, because now theres no way to prevent them from setting up, except for imprison.
next are flyings relationships with rock and steel, flying is the wind/air/bird type, and neither is a effective weapon against a boulder or a block of metal
also, if flying is atleast part the bird type, then isnt hitting it with a rock super effective? if its the wind type, then why are ice and electric super effective?
(why am i putting so much effort into this pointless comment)
next, i dont think that grass should be neutral on dragon. i get the magical implication, but as a weapon roots and wooden sticks arent gonna make the best tool against the thick, layered scales of a dragon. but i also think that such a strong neutrally attacking type should resist 5 types.
while were at dragons, i dont think they should get beast boost. no matter how you put it, it would make dragon incredibly op. and also there are two actual ultra beasts that are dragons, so eg. naganadel would just get +1 SpAtk and +1 on a random stat for each K.O.
steel types having defensive prankster would also be a huge problem. theres a good portion of pokemon with access to either cosmic power, or both iron defense and amnesia. for example goodra-H it could just boost its defenses as needed, and then sweep with body press, which also tethers into the dragon boost problem.
the rain boost for waters is also something very dicy, since 10% could be too much, but anything less would only be noteworthy if youre already trying to go fast. also, with so many swiftswimmers that boost would skyrocket their already high speed even further.
please note, that may seem like alot of criticism, but there is way more change where i had my mind blown by how creative and positive it'd be. you put alot of effort into this, and i would never do this myself. this is just some random guys opinion nobody asked for.
i have way too much freetime, i spent way too much time and effort on this... anyway thanks for listening to my TED_talk!

I might have a solution to some of these problems:
-the dragon gimmic could be a built in Shed Skin, taking less chip damage or a generic immunity to intimidate.
-steel could take less damage from hazards
-water type gimmic would be something like the Dry Skin ability (+1/16 of health under rain, -1/8 of health under sun)
-the grass type will be resisted by dragon and fire but it excange it gets a speed boost under the sun (sleep will be replaced by drousy in order to nerf the spore/sleep powder spammers)
-bug type would be immune to powder moves and accuracy drops
-there will be the usual x4 resistance instead of immunity, immunityes will be relegated only to abilityes (levitate, flash fire ecc...), also abilityes will be redistributed mainly to monotype mons (Arcanine, Raichu, ecc...),
Every type (or at least the most offensive ones) should get an ability immune to it.
Edit: in dual types: the first type decides the type gimmic. For example: a Fire/Rock type can't be burned but it can't remove hazards, a Rock/Fire type can remove hazards but it can be burned.

i disagree with the idea that the type chart should be perfectly balanced, or close to that (i think it makes sense within the pokemon world to have a weaker type in bug or rock, say, as long as they get other means to stand out outside of the type chart), and a few decisions (like breaking the fire/grass/water triangle of resistances and weaknesses; making rock and ground more similar; and the 10% boost to speed in rain to water-types feels redundant with swift swim, the boost water-type moves already get from rain, and speed boosts in pokémon have always been in multiples of 50% to facilitate mental math) i also am not a fan of. but i put that all aside to enjoy another video of yours! i love when people math their way to solve a subjective problem like this, and i love your presentation and ideas! as much as i wouldn't be a fan of this new type chart if it became a thing, i absolutely loved the video and seeing your process to reach that, thanks for sharing w us :)

Better than your first attempt without question _but_ you still went too far with the Fairy Type.
Thankfully it’s not completely useless this time around, since you acknowledged your previous mistake with the Normal Type, but it’s still a bad idea to remove Fairy’s super effectiveness against the Dragon Type when that was _literally_ the whole reason the Fairy Type was added to begin with.
Likewise Fairy should also be one of the only Types weak to Steel because that was the only reason to have a Steel type on your team, or at least Pokemon with Steel Type moves, and made sense thematically given the Fae have a weakness to iron
General balancing advice: If someone says Fairy should not be an offensive threat thematically, they are almost certainly a dragon humper who wants their favorite Type to be overpowered again and thus their opinion should be discarded completely
