  • Here I am just sharing some tips on how to prevent this type of scenario.
    We've had them in the shop before with similar issues and after they never returned with the same problem.
    Theory of Operation
    When all criteria has been met, power is supplied to each MDS Solenoid when the engine is making a transition from 8 cylinder mode to 4 cylinder mode. By actuating the solenoid, oil pressure is raised to the pair of lifters that coincide with each particular solenoid. The oil pressure pushes in the locking pins that allows the lifter to collapse, decoupling the valves and camshaft.
    When Monitored and Set Conditions
    When Monitored: This diagnostic runs continuously when the following conditions are met:
    Transition from 4 to 8 cylinder mode.
    Possible Causes for that Code:
    Insufficient Oil Pressure
    Oil Passages Restricted
    Lifter worn
    MDS Solenoid Failure Stuck or clogged
    I am just a one-man shop that is located near the Kentucky border in Southern Illinois. I try hard to have each and every Customer happy when they pick up their vehicle.

    Nice of you not to charge dish, your expertise saved them so much money, other places would have done plugs, coils, a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff! You are a good tech, charge accordingly

    Full synthetic oil change today with 5W/20 (7 quarts) in my 5.7 Hemi cost me $106 today.

      Mobil1 Truck & SUV Walmart(Not a Sponsor) $26 and some change I buy 2 for my Truck the First time and one the second oil change I use only WIX Filters I never use Wix XP as it is inferior in Filtration unless you plan on using the Oil for more than 10K Miles. I Charge 22.00 to change OIl here in the Shop and don't care if you source your own Oil. So the First Change would be close to what you paid but the second would be quite a bit cheaper.

    The ram dealership recommends for Ram 1500 5.7 5w20 synthetic with ms6395 in certain brands of oil. Mobil, Pennzoil and few others. Which is suppose benefit the mds. Sounds like hogwash.....

    I have a 2007 dodge ram 1500 5.7l. I have the same code p3497. I have already replaced all 4 mds solenoids and I did a fresh oil change. I then cleared the code after replacing mds solenoids and oil change. It just came right back. I used the correct oil. It calls for 5w20 wich ive always used. What are my next steps please help

      Sorry I cannot diagnose the Vehicle without seeing it but here are some common causes.
      Lower than normal Oil Pressure
      Restricted Passages
      Lifter
      Since you already replaced the Solenoids it "should" rule that out.

      @@ralfsautomotive im going to just replace the lifters just because but is there any thing you can tell me as far as to see if I have restricted oil passages? I'm not sure how to check that. Oil pressure seems fine as far as the Guage on the dash goes.

    • @ralfsautomotive
      @ralfsautomotive  3 роки тому

      @@eazy4570 Problem is that it really requires a scan tool now! The Diag. requires by-directional control device(scan tool).
      As for the passages, if correct oil was used and regularly changed I would not get hung up on that.

      @@ralfsautomotive thank you. Im just going to go with an mds delete kit. After spending money on diagnostic fees and labor cost to fix one thing that could be malfunctioning I may as well just spend the 1200 bucks to replace the cam, lifters, all the gaskets etc.

    Would it be helpful to switch to „eco-off“ (2018 DD R/T) mode on the 5.7 to deactivate the mds while driving? It seems like the engine & transmission don’t really „know“ what gear to be in while cruising. Good information on that code though 👍

    My 2008 dodge Ram 1500 gave this code. After listening to this I realized that I took my truck to Mavis for an oil change about a month ago and they put full synthetic instead of the conventional I have put in since I bought it in 2015. Could this have caused the motor to throw out this code?

  • @codypitzer5025
    @codypitzer5025 Рік тому +1

    Excuse my mechanical ignorance. But my truck threw this code. And approximately that same time it started to knock. Do you think that is the reason for the knock? I did change my oil with a high grade synthetic and it's still there not as bad though

    • @ralfsautomotive

    My 2013 has thrown this code twice, the first time after I cleaned and kicked snow off my tires, it went off and that was about 2 months ago, it came back yesterday, it seems to be driving fine, but is it too late to get it fixed or solve it? Also, is it an expensive problem to fix?

    • @ralfsautomotive
      @ralfsautomotive  3 роки тому

      No on both questions. Sometimes the vvt solenoids can hang. I always start with a full synthetic oil change.

    Hey so I got a P3400 Cylinder Bank 1 Deactivation on my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi, I always use the right oil and I take care of the car. I believe I have to replace my solenoids should I just replace the 1 solenoid or all of them? Also do I have to replace the manifold when I take them off?

    I use 5w30 in my hemi only, always shut off my mds.
    She runs 100% better, no slop on the higer mileage in the oil change interval. She runs as she should. 5w20 is crap for these big girls.

      I have little bit of knocking sound on my 2014 ram 1500 Hemi. I change oil every 5000 km with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-20. And I planning to do 5W-30 on my next oil change. Do you think 5W-30 will help to get rid of that knocking sound???

    • @Hahahagahaa
      @Hahahagahaa 8 місяців тому

      @@svitozar8618 knocking in the crankshaft nope, lifters it might, they run well on 10w30 as well, theyre big torquey engines they need thicker oil. The 5w20 is just for the mds, having mds on a hemi is bs as far as im concerned. My first hemi in 2007 called for 5/30 so thats what i go with.
