  • The Assault class in Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 often gets dogged on for being the worst class in the game. But I think people are just using the class incorrectly and focusing on the wrong things. In this video I'll do a max level deep dive on the class and let you know what you should be focusing on.

      Assault class is the funnest. It takes the most effort, yeah, but I'd definitely say it's the funnest.

    Here’s the biggest issue with assault being a “gun strike” class: it breaks about 30 years of established lore of them being absolute melee powerhouses. (Tabletop/Black Library).
    Gun strikes aren’t what we should be focusing on. Heavy melee should be assault’s focus. Uninterruptible heavy strikes should be the base perk, not enhanced dodges.
    Bulwark can keep control/parry melee. Assault should feel like-and be able to-slam into a horde with melee only and come out on top via raw damage rather than twitch mobility.

      Assualt should be about melee DPS, Crowd control, and aggro like it was in space marine 1. In SM1, an assualt with the right perks was a BEAST, taking down Nobs and Mega nobs with a few hammerswings and taking out lots of ads. It was a high-risk, high reward playstyle.

      Being able to unga bunga melee swing into hordes on max difficulty seems pretty boring. Every class should have to engage with mechanics to a degree. Gun strikes are what you get by interacting with the melee mechanics of the game, so I don't see that as an issue.

    I'm an assualt main. I'm ok with not being the best (or being the worst) as long as I give me best in service of the Emperor.
    And they'll buff it eventually, right? Right, brothers?

      It's shit fun yeah but shit slow can't break guard and TRASHHHHH at getting contested health back unlike chain sword and power fist it's just speed hammer is slow

      I’ve either had to sacrifice power for speed or speed for power so far with the hammer. Fencing Hammer is cool since I parry everything so even thought it’s slow it kind of doesn’t matter cause I get my health back with gun strikes

      Because the hammer has a lot of animation frames where you can't use your dodge, which makes this weapon rather useless and frustrating to use. Also, the range on it sucks for the weapon being so slow and bulky. While charging your attacks you'll always get railed by minoris enemies behind and besides you.

      If you want a challenge after ruthless difficulty play assault. If you want easy mode play bulwark. If you want to shoot stuff play the rest of the classes. I enjoy playing assult because its made more aware on how to play the game. All the classes are fun. I only just the jet pack to help an overwhelmed teammate or myself. Thats about it.

      Also the biggest point you make, is that it requires all these perks at higher levels to be viable. That just sounds like bad class design to me.

      with talent 10% for each kill it''s absolutely no cd in the crowd, 25lvl talent for dodge with jetpack also makes it last infintive....til you can perfect dodge.

      @@DevlVergil immunity window is much longer, + previous talent gives you +25% damage boost so gunshots will wreck any target, also you can use it one by one without cd

      Making the dodge into the jet pack dodge by default, and allowing that dodge the special characteristic of being able to animation cancel melee attacks (just like parry can for everyone) would immediately give assault parity with the other classes.
      After that, they need to significantly buff the per strike damage and stagger of thunder hammer and power fist, but that’s true across the board, with assault simply suffering the most.
      They also need to move traits further up. Having you class be in a bad place for 21/25 levels is just bad lol.

    The biggest issue with dodging is that it is the worse option outside of orange attacks. You can animation cancel almost all actions to parry, which dodge cannot. Parry stops multiple incoming attacks, does an 360 knockback, AND kills minoris enemies. Dodge only avoids a single attack, no cc, no damage.

      Right and when you compare it to tactical getting an auspects scan for a parry or bulwark dropping a shock grenade on perfect Larry there needs to be something for the assault that is similar.

      The gunstrike does the CC to be fair, but yeah it ends up being point blank shooting then using a faster melee weapon to poke until its time to dodge.

      Yes, and this is one of the reasons why TH sucks so much. When enemies go into a red attack halfway through your charge attack, if youre lucky you trade, but if not you get knocked down with nothing to show for.

    People arent playing the class wrong, they just dont want to play it with gunstrikes. Thats so far away from the class fantasy of assault its laughable.

      I think you misunderstand the fantasy of being a space marine even if the class is assault. a space marine is going to use speed, evasion, counter attacks, and finese over pure aggression. The codex astartes does not support pure agression

    If that's the case then this shouldn't be called an "Assault" class and be designed to jump into the middle of a hot mess with a ground pound. If you want a gun-fu class, that's cool, make them some kind of duelist. But Assault should be able to jump into the middle and be more like a berserker, swinging the hammer and messing stuff up.

      Right. The war hammer should be clearing trash mobs and gun strikes giving you armor in general instead of it being a perk on the tree. That should just be in the system. Melee combat is very un-rewarding and has a lot of issues

      Personally one of the things i think that would allow this playstyle to work is if you give assault some way to generate contested health, to encourage a more aggressive playstyle. Like 1 to 2 percent of it for every enemy you hit with the ground pound. Would allow for more risky plays and break up the whole *parry, gunstrike,dodge,gunstrike* shenanigans that it´s basically fully revolving around right now.

      @@Psychoangel-d23 Yep, the sustain is the biggest issue. Sure, I can charge and swing my hammer at the horde or majoris in front of me to knock them back but I'll trade half my health bar for it due to the minoris behind me, it's just not worth it. Maybe giving the class significant damage reduction while charging or swinging a melee attack as a passive might help. I honestly don't like the focus on the ground pound too much because it reinforces those must-have cooldown perks on the abilities even more.

      rather than jumping in the middle of a big group aim for the front row so you don't get pummel to death, assault team use this tactics against enemies that are way weaker physicaly or on units that are disavantage in melee combat, it's litteraly like you launch a single assault primaris in 2 full units of gaunts, you will deal a lot of damage but you'll end dead meat in not time.

    It really only enforces many opinions about the class in that it's terribly designed and needs a rework. The class that is supposed to be a melee fighter, is actually a pistol duellist. Yeah, that's the Space Marine fantasy all Assault players wanted... terrible design and hoping for a full rework.

      @@DevlVergil Now try to parry out of it instead, which you can do. It is still a bit of a weird design though, since tit really is only about pistol dueling. Like I feel that should be given to vanguard, same with the dodge stuff, then give the parry boost to assault and crack them up a bit more with other things

    I have found that the Hammer has a HUGE parry window if you hold the button down until the attack hits.

      any weapon with fencing class is like that and the faster the weapon the more likely you can stand and parry everything, vanguard can litteraly stand in the middle of gaunts and spam parry button and detroy every that try to attack you and let you find a way out when out of grapple charge.

      Why do people even thumbed this post up? Its completely wrong. The parry window is already very generous in this game, and im assuming fencing speeds up the startup frame only. Its placebo folks.

    Yea, I agree that the assault is better as a pistol duelist but this just point out that the class is C tier. While it is still enjoyable to use a jump pack, the main advantage is that it has high mobility and the thunderhammer, which are kinda lackluster. Other classes like tactician and sniper do a much better job at picking off elites in pack even in melee which is kinda sad.

    Did a ruthless run as Bulwark with a good Assault and a good Tactical all working together. It was a walk in the park. 0 incapacitations. Damn near perfection.

      ​​@@Psychoangel-d23 i've noticed when a warrior blocks it will 5 or 6 times so it gives the time to charge the attack,if i've cleared enough nids out the way it works and the aftershock clears out any hanging around, granted ur gonna take a few hits but the emperor protects 😉

    Thunder hammer or death. I couldn't disagree more. Dodging is good for what it is, mostly dodging ranged attacks. Parry is still king because it breaks the horde, still gives gun strikes, and allows you to go to smash town in giant hordes while taking minimal damage.

    Sounds more like you overlevelded until you got to something you could exploit, which is very late into the game. And even then it's just highlighting that what Assault is (melee assault unit. I can't make this any more obvious) is very poorly reflected in the design and needs a severe overhaul. Basically, you're compromising and bandaiding when you should be giving Saber the feedback they need to correct themselves. You CAN play around release issues. That doesn't mean you're wrong, just that the issues still need to be addressed.

      ​​@@TrueVanguardI've leveled every other class to 25, have cleared T4 difficulty, and am currently leveling up assault. I agree that your rationale is sound, just doesn't feel as good to play as it's very reactive. I'm a mission or two from kicking the hammer over to artificer, and have plenty of relic datas to upgrade when it's high enough. I realize there are better options, but so far it just feels like a gimpy bulwark :/

      @@TrueVanguard I don't think he means "exploit" as in something cheesy or unintended by the devs, but "exploit" as in make use of. And he's not wrong, a class that is effective only almost at the end of the levelling grind isn't exactly a good thing

    I was hoping for some tips on how to effective use the hammer and the power fist only to be told to use thr chainsword instead. Dissapointing.
    At least knowing Assault is the dodge class was informative.

      power hammer tips : always keep a jetpack charge to backdash when surrounded, always keep enemies in front of you, hammer has 180° front attack, if they slip behind you, you'll loose a ton of health, don't hesitate to mince some gaunt that are not group with your gun.
      Use neutral charged attack for aoe rather the charged combo, it has more aoe and execute faster (there a weapon perk you can unlock at green tier if i remember correctly that speed up it).
      Charge attack combo work for single target, majoris and extremis to deal a ton of damage but too slow to be use in hordes.
      Since hammer hit 180° don't ground pound in the middle of the group aim for the front row, you hit less enemies but you won't be in an akward situation.
      For horde of gaunts an easy patern is light attack until they are too close then parry back dash and repeat it's a solid way to avoid cheap damage and armor loss, in tense scenario i even just light parry light parry until i can back dash/roll without harm and if you create enought space neutral charge attack will do a good job at killing a good number and trigger a gun strike.
      And do never try to ground pound 5 ranged majoris, you don't know how many time i didn't land alive even in fast tap.
      From someone that has 100+ hours and play ruthless as assault hope it will help you.

    Another solid guide. And much needed one. I’ve been trying to figure out the classes solo and learn them. But definitely realizing you can easily establish good habits for one class, but translate poorly for a different class because of play style. And I think one of my personal short comings has been seeing a shared weapon between classes and reverting back to a different play style. Ex :Small add clearing with the chain sword and not focusing majors which leads to bad runs lol.

    Bro you CHANGED the way I play. I loved Assault anyway but after unlocking that every gunstrike gives back armor I feel like I play way more strategically. It's been a whole new blast!

    You are 100% right that Assault is better vs Tyranid. In addition to chaos dealing mostly ranged damage, they teleport around, which interrupts the ability to get solid melee combos successfully. At the same time getting caught trying to dodge through flamethrowers and still getting ticked from all sides.

      It's also more difficult to charge the Jetpack cooldown with the 10% ability charge on kill since Chaos Hordes have a lower amount of minoris spawning.

    You kinda glossed over that last point, that Assault really struggles into Chaos, when Chaos is 50% of the game. I've found that Assault is very capable against Tyranids, at least once you've got the bottom row of class-perks. But Chaos is just awful, for the reasons you stated, that you get far less opportunities to set up gun-strikes and executions, and whenever you peek out of cover to gap-close, you get mown down by a barrage of ranged. Chaos also tends not to provide nicely clumped up groups for you to ground-pound.
    I just straight up avoid Chaos maps when playing Assault. It's just miserable. A class that only works against one enemy with one weapon, isn't okay.

    The problem is almost your entire build is on the last row of your perk tree which means you are going to feel very weak until you are in your very late teens.

    I think having a viable gunstrike build for the assault is still a good thing. But I think it would also be great to have other viable builds.

    I'm also maining Assault and I agree on your general points, but for some reason it feels like perfect dodging is still way harder to time than just perfect parrying everything with a fencing hammer. This also goes for the jump pack dash dodge, which carries a lot of potential with some of the last perks. I just never feel like I should dodge instead of parry, which is kinda sad. I'm thinking about playing block hammer just to force myself to use dodges more often and build muscle memory for jump pack dash dodging. Replenishing jump charges and triggering +25% damage consistently seems like the mastery I have yet to achieve.

    I gravitated to Assault instantly when I started playing. I levelled it across everything, all weapons, and while the Hammer will always have a special place in my heart... It just isn't enough. The class encourages mobility, aggression, and survivability; the Hammer only allows for one of those three key points. As much as I want the Hammer to be king... It just isn't. Makes you too vulnerable, makes you too open to damage, doesn't recover enough health... It can be a very frustrating experience. The highest damage I ever got with the Hammer on the Hive Tyrant mission, on Substantial at like level 23 with a Artificer Hammer was like 8k. Same mission, same teammates, same classes, same difficulty with the standard Chainsword? 12k. And I took like 300 less damage, went down less, and was constantly dealing damage without damaging myself.

    In order to EASILY and quickly gun strike small mobs, use the dash, and during the dash animation, with the hammer spam attack, your character will lunge forward and stab with the hammer, instantly and automatically giving you a quick gun strike, BAM 2 armor, you can then dash, forward lunge, gun strike again and again :)

    I really think the Assault should get that one Vanguard perk where your perfect dodge window is doubled when under 50% health. That would really bring the dodge recharge mechanic online.

    So far my dive into assault definitely started feeling good at the higher levels. I think the way to go for assault is a combo of using the powerful gun strikes mentioned in the video in combination of having a suped up jumpack melee dive. I like to run the perk that ups my damage of a jumpack attack after an execution for 25%, and the 100% more damage but 50% less radius. This does monstrous damage to majors, extremis is a little harder to set up. Easily only needs 2 or 3 more light attacks on the highest difficulty. Ive been running the power fist at relic tier and yes the ad clear isnt terrible, the power fist perk that gives 100% more contested health back on heavy hits lets you trade damage a lot nicer in hordes, especially with the power wave distance increaese on the same tree. I noticed i have to play smart still, staying mobile and cannon punching is another way to take leas damage. The flow of getting an easy execution by parrying or dodging followed by a jumpack slam that does great single target damage is an amazing loop.

    Once I hit 21 and had relic tier hammer and heavy pistol I started crushing with Assault with gun strike build.
    Basic swings forward and behind if necessary to sweep away and CC smaller enemies while waiting for elites to attack so that I can parry or dodge for the gun strikes.
    Jet pack and slam as necessary to clear out large groups of weak enemies or reposition.

    The hammer works best against chaos forces, especially when the minions have shields. Hammer slam after jump does a lot of damage and very quickly ques up executions

    I have to completely agree with the weapon choice. I wanted to play hammer and powerfist so badly but they just aren’t viable with this class. Hammer is way too slow you just get destroyed while trying to swing it

      Hammer all day... Parry, strike, dodge, strike, light attack, heavy attack. In that order lol assault has a perk that allows you a unbreakable stance which lets you freely do the heavy attack 🙌💯

    If I remember correctly, the chain sword can be specialized for either chaos, or tyranids. And I think it's the same for the thunderhammer.

      10% bonus melee damage is barely specializing anything, since most of your damage will come from the gun strikes anyway.

    Tbf i think a lot of people have their own idea about how the classes should work and don't give a thought to how saber actually designed them. I like that you're willing to put aside preconceptions and explore what's in front of you to discover the best play styles.
    Not saying some things don't need some tweaking, but we can't start bullying saber just because things didn't work exactly the way *we* think they should.

    Assault is my go to. I find no weakness too bad. Hell I struggle way more with the Bulwark. Getting a parry with that shield doesn't always register well and I'm more of an offensive fighter anyway. Those ground strikes can clear an area

    Making the dodge into the jet pack dodge by default, and allowing that dodge the special characteristic of being able to animation cancel melee attacks (just like parry can for everyone) would immediately give assault parity with the other classes.
    After that, they need to significantly buff the per strike damage and stagger of thunder hammer and power fist, but that’s true across the board, with assault simply suffering the most.
    They also need to move traits further up. Having you class be in a bad place for 21/25 levels is just bad lol.

      @@DevlVergil I agree that assault’s perks can be thrown out and redone almost wholesale.
      Even with great perks, it really should be using the jet pack dodge as its dodge, and it does need the ability to cancel out of melee attacks and dodge. No class can have dodge-based gameplay without that fundamental mechanical tool.
      They seemed to grasp this for parry, and hence you can always begin a parry. I kinda get them treating dodge differently, but in that case, giving your dodge-based class the unique ability to cancel attacks via dodge is all the more self-evident as necessary for good design.

    Note: Dodge doesnt animation cancel like Parry does, so use both, you can cancel a swing with parry then dodge if you need to in emergencies

    Dodge is only the better option when you have to otherwise parry is far superior. Use a fencing weapon and your parry window is larger than a perfect dodge with the assault perk.
    Also when multiple enemies stagger strikes at you a dodge I frames are not long enough to always avoid dmg. You can quickly parry multiple attacks and get cc from it.
    I’ve taken down entire ruthless massive waves with parry gunstrike assault spec’d with heavy bolt pistol and headshot perks.

    Tyranids are fun to fight against because they are mostly melee. When fighting chaos your armor is shredded before you could even reach the enemies. Its like helldivers 2 all over again.:)

    Now show us your perfect parry and dodges against surrounded chaos marines + horde of minoris which block most of your melee hits with shield. Your armor doesn't last more than nano sec no matter how many gunstrikes you do, it instantly goes away and so does your hp bar, cause your melee dmg lack and you have no primary weapon to fast clear chaos crowd and CSM from distance.

    I think if you have to wait for the last row of perks for a playstyle to fall in to place, the skill tree is just shit. Half the choices, aren't even choices for Assault. Its first signature perk is beyond a joke lol. They'll slowly fix up the game, hopefully...

      Tbf, most skill tress are pure bs for the most part. 90% of the perks are useless or mediocre while some other few are must picks. The worst is the Sniper where you basically have the choice between "Remove negative effects when invisible" and "5% cooldown reduction per headshot kill", the choice is obvious, it's such a no-brainer. Why even add a perk tree atp.

    Yeah agreed on both points of the Gunstrike perks really being the meat and potatoes of the build as well as the Thunder Hammer being a bit... odd. Dont get me wrong I still use THammer most of the time just because I love how the animations look and how it plays, but it definitely needs a bit of a buff which I think is probably on their radar

    Well the majoris enemies for Chaos are both ranged attackers who like to pepper you from a distance, and the flamer variant is an ass who likes to keep you away with an aoe flame attack. Chaos has a lot of ranged enemies that can ruin your day and fast.

    I don't disagree with what you are saying about how to play the assault, but what I take issue with is that that the fantasy of the assault is to... assault things. You attack them aggressively with a jetpack, instead we wind up dodging aggressively.
    Something that hinges heavily on dodges and counters is more of a duelist archetype in my head.
    The way the class is designed right now doesn't meet the expectations of a lot of people.

    This definitely helps me understand the class better, I just finished the campaign and was deciding which class to start on and I loved the thruster pack in the campaign missions I had. This gives me a better idea of how it functions in harder content so I can adjust myself accordingly

      @@Nickat1ne707 Ya I literally ran my first 2 ops the other day. 1st one had a lvl 2 and 14 with me and went very smooth and was fun. 2nd one I had bots and holy fuck, even on the easiest difficulty I was just immediately getting mobbed and downed with no way to recover efficiently. They really need to communicate the differences between campaign and pve, had I known you don't recover armor naturally I would've picked a different class to start with.

      Block is still bad, even if it’s most viable on assault not having the ability to parry at all is far to punishing given the marginal increase in stats you get from a block weapon

      I have hand no issue with chaos as long as I'm running the hammer and have it balanced. And doing the overall dmg buffs on it. But your main play style should be dodging and gun stricks period. As well as getting your executions in and having armor boost as often as possible. And lvl the shit out of the pistols. That helps so much.

    problem with perfect dodge is that you cannot dodge when you're in mid animation while you can parry in mid animation. The game rewards sitting still and being passive waiting for an attack to come in so i can perfect dodge but this type of playstyle is NOT fun. I dont wanna sit and wait to counter, i wanna take my big ass hammer and swing it at the enemy but this is not the efficient way to play this class. So now you're forced to choose between effective + boring, or semi effective + fun style of play, most people go for the latter and this makes assault seem weak

    I played assault till lvl 25 and all I can say is you say they’re all about gun strikes then what about chaos. Which most majoris enemies rarely melee you when you’re up close? When you have no gun strike opportunity your health and your damage go wayyyyy down and you’re stuck there dancing and getting shot for 3-5 seconds and lose all hp.

    Unless they buff his Slam and Give him a Melta Pistol, this class is just pure suffering compared to the other 5.

    Did you know that doing a melee attack while dropping down from any height will do a ground pound attach with said weapon? I know it works with the Chainsword, just doing a regular melee attack and not charged so it's more than likely possible with all the others.

    I think the issue with this class is that it wants you to gun strike, but all the gun strike perks are in the bottom row of the skill tree. Should someone have to grind 2/3rds of a character max level before they even start having access to core gameplay boosting perks? I don't think so. The perks before level 18 all intend for you to wade into combat with big charge attacks and the rest of the kit just doesn't provide this class with enough survivability to facilitate that. I've been leveling assault and have stopped buying perks for the guy simply because they're not going to be useful while I'm stuck gun strike dashing around. Small boosts to melee damage really don't matter that much to the dodgy gun striker they want me to be in order to survive.

    After 40 hours of this game , i feel like most important thing of combat in this game is how to maintain shield on and clear the horde then Gunstrike is quite good answers of this game to maintain it. because we doesn't have properly healing ability in any classes just Contested health is not enough. for tank classes or class that design to be in middle of the horde it's should have buff like melee damage reduce when attacking or something like that.
    I hope in short future their will change or fix something , maybe add Apothecary classes or something.
    Base of my imagination of this class is Jump Pack with unique Melee weapon such as Thunder claw , Thunder hammer or Power axe.

      Imo the what would really help in general is a class specific way to gain contested health. Like for example the assault gains a bit of contested health for every enemy he hits with a ground pound. or tie it to the parry.
      Something to give players a slight amount of sustainability that isnt tied to stimpacks or spamming executions/gunstrikes non stop.
