I live in a farming community in Missouri. I always wondered why the gravel roads were in such poor shape. We only have graders to fix the roads. Now I know why the hills always have gullies that go down the tire tracks. Great work!

That looks pretty darn good. I have driveway problems. It's basically the lower than the surrounding ground. Water runs down it like a river during rains. I just fix the potholes that form, but after watching this am finally inspired to get some drainage ditches cut and raise the drive up a smidge. Thanks for the inspiration Andrew!
With so little grade, crowning works great but its good to install rolling dips to shed water wherever possible. We usually come back and install; ~3" of +3 crushed rock. People driving on wet native material is what starts the whole thing again. The bobcat really cleans the cut bank up nicely. Great work Andrew!
You do a great job! I’ve worn out one of those 864/t200 skid loaders, nice machine. They do great with a land-planer and roller attachment also. Your ability to spread rock with that old girl not to mention a MANUELLL tailgate is very impressive! I used to do work like this and miss working for GOOD people and not the state or hundreds of millions of dollar projects. There’s gonna be all kinds of keyboard professionals here but none of them have what you have

We all have been inconvenienced by road construction and repair while on vacation or similar fun times but did not appreciate what was really going on or understand all the procedures, materials and techniques employed. Andrew, you have just GOT to buy a roller compactor. One of these will make almost any road work you do that much more stable, and better looking too. Generally, you've done a pretty good job here. You're a hard working man, I'll give you that, well done!
Once he owns a roller he needs to get it to job which is trailer time and then one would really need to hire a full time employee so that 2 trucks and trailers can go out to the job and now he has a whole new set of trials and tribulations to consider.I see Andrew as a KISS guy keep it simple stupid but, Lord knows he could handle it as his reputation has increased and I'm sure he could keep someone busy. Only time will tell
Equipment breaks and you repair it. Employees that are reliable, honest, and consistently hardworking in this type of business are really difficult to find and keep.
A roller is pretty unnecessary for most of his jobs. If he did absolutely need something to compact small roads/ driveways like these then he can get a weighted compactor drum for his tractor to pull around. Moving all of his equipment has already got to be a nightmare, I can't imagine adding something so specific to the mix...

@@Canvideo My driveway is a bit over 1/4 mile and believe me, you need a crown and ditches on each side. Mine is hilly as well. I'm also adding gravel and fixing after heavy rains. Luckily I have some equipment, or it would cost me a fortune. The last big storm last summer washed out a 6 foot deep ditch directly in front of my low water concrete bridge, it was like a raging river all that day. I hate my driveway.
Most gravel roads do not have a rock base and layers of the right gravel topping. After winter, the ground will thaw and the roads get soft. People have a habit of driving in the rut rather than driving the high sides. When the road sets up and dries the ruts almost always break up the crown and form water channels when it rains, washing away the topping. If you have equipment, you will probably find that the less you disturb the topping, the less will wash away when it rains, so filling in the ruts with proper road gravel and packing it down works best for me.
Good call on that frame for that dozer. That would of made a big headache and then some. Nice job on the road. I have a ASV RC 60 and done many driveways, I like the way you take a look at jobs well before starting. Getting a good plan and tackling it. Respect all the way. Thanks for teaching us some tricks.

The job that keeps on giving. I really don't guess there is a permanent fix but what you did they should get some miles out of. Almost like feeling sorry for them and giving a bit more bang for the buck. I get a little queasy when you are in nascar mode and the top of the dump truck tips a good bit. A hard roll would pretty much make scrap iron out of the dump truck should it ever happen. I'll pray it never does. I think if the country went into a depression, you have so many talents to draw from, that you wouldn't notice it. I guess this is as good a place to get out of this conversation... 16:13 and 16:56 you gotta have a washer or a bushing in between the cotter pin and that short pipe or the action of the bed will saw through your cotter pin like nothing. I really enjoy your videos, they're very well done and you really seem to know what the heck you are doing.

I recently put new stone on my drive. It’s been here for 13 years and was down into the clay. I had potholes and muck during the winter. The truck driver started out great and was spreading fine until he lifted the bed too high and the stone came pouring over the tailgate and left about a 3’ high pile of stone for about 30’ or so. My drive is about 400 yards long. Had he not messed up one load would have been good but he ran short. I wasn’t sure there would be enough in that pile to reach the end. I got another load and started working on moving the huge pile. I’m glad though I got 2 loads. It’s about 2”deep throughout and in some spots it’s about 4”. I’m hoping it’ll pack because my wife and daughters cars get pulled side to side because they’re so small. It doesn’t affect my truck any. Thanks for sharing your job w us. You do great work. I’m amazed that you’re so talented both in excavation and a great mechanic as well.
Back when I paid $50mo 4 TV I couldn't watch tractor work Hot Tenting funny blond attorneys with big blocks visit forums watch a man build an off grid cabin in Ontario w/his dog or drool over DIY Maple Syrup sourdough bacon cheese sandwiches or listen to school bus camper nomads. Every time I watch these videos, from a perspective of a Cali suburbia person, I am amazed on what is considered a "driveway" haha. But I think I am finally starting to understand. Great video as always.
That driveway has been let go too long. Nice job spreading that stone. That is not as easy as it looks. Comes with experience.More interesting than watching some TVshows.
Excellent video. The narration and explanations really add value over just a video with music. The crown and ditches will make that road last a lot longer. Not sure how it was initally built but it didn't appear water drainage was considered. The residents there are really going to be happy with their road now.

A good man with the corner of the dozer blade and an ace with the tailgate. That tree reminds us all of the value of a good cage on the machine! Perhaps when you grow your business you could justify another man with a truck and trailer to transport more machinery, especially a compactor roller for the chippings. But then, perhaps your customers won't accept the extra cost . . .
Hi Andrew, I know it's a year and half later, but the pins for the dump hinge near the hoist need a washer before using the cotter pin. The cotter pin will wear out in short time allowing it to move.

It's amazing everytime I watch your videos of you redoing a dirt road or driveway I think to myself You remove to much material but when you get done it looks good..lol what do I know I'm a city guy who would love to do that type of work. Got me looking into heavy equipment schools now..
well young man good to see your active. So a little advice from an old grader cat operator, you are angle dozing backwards. Angle doze the materials from the shoulder of road or ditch to middle then level. you can tilt and angle blade so the material in ditch will come up on road, then angle to center then straight blade center to fill and carry material ahead of you.good luck, ps watch come grader vids.

Down road if you continue to do driveway roads. You might consider a box blade you could pull behind a tractor. That way you can maintain these drive ways along with building them. Just a thought. You do great work enjoy watching your vedios.
Andrew, from a fans point of view, it often appears that you put a lot more pressure and weight on that single axle truck of yours, than it was ever designed to take, hold or carry. But, there again, you know your equipment and I am only an observer who enjoys watching you progress with each new job towards becoming a self supporting, independently successful contractor.
Great video. I learned a lot. You always want to hire the guy whose equipment isn’t too nice. Shows a guy who is interested in doing the work efficiently with cost in mind. Beware of the company that shows up in shiny new trucks (chrome lettering) loaded with expensive accessories. This from a homeowner.
that's a weird outlook that doesn't apply to the masses. Perhaps it applies to your personal experience, but some people take pride in their equipment and show it.
This was in my suggested, I don’t know why, but after one video I subscribed. If you’re ever in Ohio and want to deal with a flooding issue at my house stop by. It would probably help me stop having panic attacks every time it storms.
I find that potholes are best dealt with by filling them to slightly above grade with proper road gravel. The Cat just chews up the nice compact portion of the road. Also keeping organic soil off the road helps preventing mud. Crowning a road never seems to stop ruts. Drivers like to drive in the rut rather than the high spots so the crown is usually moot on a dirt road. Same goes for potholes. They are caused by driving through them and the hydraulic action when the tires drive through them blows out the road material, so, filling them with good material ASAP is best.
You've have more equipment than Carter has liver pills. I'm always amazed at the new equipment you get. I would like to see a picture of all your TOYS!!! LOL.

I recently put new stone on my drive. It’s been here for 13 years and was down into the clay. I had potholes and muck during the winter.
The truck driver started out great and was spreading fine until he lifted the bed too high and the stone came pouring over the tailgate and left about a 3’ high pile of stone for about 30’ or so. My drive is about 400 yards long. Had he not messed up one load would have been good but he ran short. I wasn’t sure there would be enough in that pile to reach the end. I got another load and started working on moving the huge pile.
I’m glad though I got 2 loads. It’s about 2”deep throughout and in some spots it’s about 4”. I’m hoping it’ll pack because my wife and daughters cars get pulled side to side because they’re so small. It doesn’t affect my truck any.

Back when I paid $50mo 4 TV I couldn't watch tractor work Hot Tenting funny blond attorneys with big blocks visit forums watch a man build an off grid cabin in Ontario w/his dog or drool over DIY Maple Syrup sourdough bacon cheese sandwiches or listen to school bus camper nomads. Now the *TV is mostly never on.*

Every time I watch these videos, from a perspective of a Cali suburbia person, I am amazed on what is considered a "driveway" haha. But I think I am finally starting to understand. Great video as always.

That driveway has been let go too long. Nice job spreading that stone. That is not as easy as it looks. Comes with experience.More interesting than watching some TVshows.
Excellent video. The narration and explanations really add value over just a video with music. The crown and ditches will make that road last a lot longer. Not sure how it was initally built but it didn't appear water drainage was considered. The residents there are really going to be happy with their road now.

Perhaps when you grow your business you could justify another man with a truck and trailer to transport more machinery, especially a compactor roller for the chippings. But then, perhaps your customers won't accept the extra cost . . .

I know it's a year and half later, but the pins for the dump hinge near the hoist need a washer before using the cotter pin. The cotter pin will wear out in short time allowing it to move.

It's amazing everytime I watch your videos of you redoing a dirt road or driveway I think to myself You remove to much material but when you get done it looks good..lol what do I know I'm a city guy who would love to do that type of work. Got me looking into heavy equipment schools now..
well young man good to see your active. So a little advice from an old grader cat operator, you are angle dozing backwards. Angle doze the materials from the shoulder of road or ditch to middle then level. you can tilt and angle blade so the material in ditch will come up on road, then angle to center then straight blade center to fill and carry material ahead of you.good luck, ps watch come grader vids.

Down road if you continue to do driveway roads. You might consider a box blade you could pull behind a tractor. That way you can maintain these drive ways along with building them. Just a thought. You do great work enjoy watching your vedios.

Andrew, from a fans point of view, it often appears that you put a lot more pressure and weight on that single axle truck of yours, than it was ever designed to take, hold or carry. But, there again, you know your equipment and I am only an observer who enjoys watching you progress with each new job towards becoming a self supporting, independently successful contractor.
That truck can carry 9 tons legally. Those loads of stone were just under that.

Great video. I learned a lot. You always want to hire the guy whose equipment isn’t too nice. Shows a guy who is interested in doing the work efficiently with cost in mind. Beware of the company that shows up in shiny new trucks (chrome lettering) loaded with expensive accessories. This from a homeowner.
that's a weird outlook that doesn't apply to the masses. Perhaps it applies to your personal experience, but some people take pride in their equipment and show it.
This was in my suggested, I don’t know why, but after one video I subscribed. If you’re ever in Ohio and want to deal with a flooding issue at my house stop by. It would probably help me stop having panic attacks every time it storms.

I find that potholes are best dealt with by filling them to slightly above grade with proper road gravel. The Cat just chews up the nice compact portion of the road. Also keeping organic soil off the road helps preventing mud. Crowning a road never seems to stop ruts. Drivers like to drive in the rut rather than the high spots so the crown is usually moot on a dirt road. Same goes for potholes. They are caused by driving through them and the hydraulic action when the tires drive through them blows out the road material, so, filling them with good material ASAP is best.
You've have more equipment than Carter has liver pills. I'm always amazed at the new equipment you get. I would like to see a picture of all your TOYS!!! LOL.
