Loving your videos - inspirational stuff. As you say, it’s like re-living your own experience of the trail, but it’s as equally brilliant being immersed in your journey. Safe travels!
I'm really enjoying watching you hike along the Pennine Way. Sorry you had a bad morning when leaving Hebden Bridge. Hopefully, you'll have a better time of it for the rest of your journey. To your question about Yorkshire greetings: it is quite normal for the area and other northern areas of England to ask,'You alright?' or 'Alright love?' as a greeting. The second is usually being more familiar or asked to women a bit more. I can see how this might seem disconcerting to people who aren't used to the phrase. Also, I wouldn't have accepted the drink from the person in the pub either! Whilst there's lots of friendly people in Yorkshire, it always pays to keep your wits about you no matter where you are in the world. I loved seeing your footage of Top Withens. I've never been there myself, but I do love Haworth, so hopefully, I'll get to see it one day. Good luck with the rest of your hike!
Hi Christina, I just found you today. What a lovely video. When I was a little girl my grand parents took me on a ramble to that Brontë house. I was underwhelmed that we had walked all that way just to see a broken down old building. Your video took me back to that memory. Thank you. Happy Travels.❤
When it comes to trail hiking, camping, your vids are probably the best out there. very enjoyable and better than any tv programs and the next one never comes soon enough. Think i may be addicted lol. :-)
I third that...been following her vlogging for several years and even met her in person along the Scottish National Trail and she's fab and I wish I was hiking with her now!!! Such a great resource for anyone planning to do the trails she's hiked!
Lovely video. May is great. She has been running the farm shop since 1974 and also offers camping for free on a patch of grass just across the road from the shop.
That old lady at May's looks lovely. She seemed to have taken a shine to you. You're teaching and showing me stuff I didn't know about the part of the world I grew up in that I didn't know. Fancy that, hey? An American teaching a Brit about Britain. You're doing a great service. Have some rest days though. You deserve them.
A very nice video, thank you. Some lovely scenes and very well filmed too. That lady May is the best of British, a true Pennine Way legend. Good luck with the rest of your journey.
Mays farm shop was there in 1982 when I first hiked the PW. It still looked exactly the same when I backpacked the route for the 5th time a couple of years ago. Good to see that some things over change. You'll have an easier day or so from Ickornshaw through to Malham before you really get into the Yorkshire Dales where the scenery changes again.
So pleased you were able to experience some proper Pennine weather (no views😂) - unfortunately you’ve also had to endure the worst of England (grafitti and litter etc) trail just keeps getting better and better the further north of hebden bridge you get. I look forward to the rest of your adventure! Bon chance!
I think you’re doing an awesome job walking the Pennine Way in October/November. Hebden Bridge is not a fav of mine and I’m sorry you didn’t have such a relaxing night. I hope today is a better hike for you ❤️
Sorry to hear that Hebden Bridge was not what you liked, maybe the town was just to large. I hope that it was made up for by the nice helpful lady in the shop. Christina the filming is great with so many autumn colours, nice to be greeted so warmly at your last stop for the night. Do take care and Best Wishes. Andrew.
After finding the Co-op closed, I'm sorry to say the sign you walked past on the next building made me chuckle. It was like a prophecy! Glad you got sorted at May's. She's so sweet. It's such a fantastic place. Ikornshaw Moor seems to go on for ever. The shed at the campsite was a real bonus. The "alright love" is very much a North of England Yorkshire/Lancashire thing. The guy offering you a drink of his beer is a bit odd (unless you were having a full on conversation about real ale)
It looked like it might be a tool shop of some sort. Its name was “Totally Screwed”. I shouldn’t laugh, but after the morning you had, it seemed appropriate 😂
This is amazing. Pennine way in October is a real challenge. Up north there are number of greetings that can seem about bizarre, but are quite normal - from ‘love’ to ‘darling’ to ‘pet’ and even ‘me duck’. Best of luck.
Love, pet flower, hinny, mate, pal, bud are all words used after “all right” when acknowledging someone, I think you are right to be cautious though when in a pub and being alone at night.
Hiya!, Love is a perfectly normal greeting around Yorkshire 😊. I'm from the local area and although I don't say it as I think it is a bit old fashioned, it is used a lot! Hope you are enjoying the aire gap - you have some right treats to come in the next few days!
Yeh definately the young generation wouldn't ever address you as "love" but normal for older folks in them there northern towns n villages! My uncle from up there always called us "pet"....as if we were a cat or guinea pig!! It was endearing tho.
The day got better for you Christina from the food and tea from the farm shop to just arriving at your accommodation just as the rain arrived, are you all right luv is a common northern english saying, what does the awkward person staying in your room expect staying in a shared dorm room in a hostel, it's not like staying in a hotel room, please watch what you are doing when walking on the limestone above Malham Cove, if the stone is wet it will be extremely slippery, we don't want you falling and getting injured.
Hi! 'you alright love' is Yorkshire for Hello...are you ok? He probably thought you were looking a tad stressed. Enjoying these videos...best of luck....
Greeting someone as Love or Lover is normal in Lancashire. It's just a pleasant greeting, not a term of affection or an advance. Sadly, these pleasant greetings when out walking dropped off in the Covid period when lots of non-regular walkers went walking. Sadly, it hasn't recovered completely, and young people especially usually ignore your greeting, even a good morning or afternoon. Hebden Bridge is only about 4 miles from the traditional Lancashire border.
What a good end to the day after a miserable time in Hebden. It's become too touristy for my liking..The term "luv" used to be very common in Yorkshire but used less nowadays.Older people use it a lot still.May said "Nice meeting yer luv".A food Takeaway shop owner once addressed me as "Luvvy luv".
I agree it was too touristy. Well, the guy who said Alright luv to me was looking me up and down and gave me weird vibe even before he said it. He was prob in his 30s, not old..
@@hikersheep He sounded like a bad vibe too. He might've had a drink or three and suddenly thought he could pull women like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Town centre pubs on saturday evening/night can make you feel a bit uneasy.
@@hikersheep I'm a Brit that lived in Fort Worth for over 3 years and visited often for 10 years. I found it really strange to be addressed as Honey (or Hun) by mostly women older than me. I was 40's at the time and they were mostly 50-70. When I replied they would often notice my accent and ask if I was from Lancashire, which I am. They turned out to be 'war brides' that had met American Airmen in WW2 and gone to live together in the US. These women would be 100 now, so that bit of history has gone.
Christina you are awesome. Editing each day's video as you go and they are so well done too. How many go pro batteries and battery banks do you carry? Do you have a back up camera? I have 6 batteries which usually only last maybe 2-3 days. Your next few days into Yorkshire Dales and Teesdale will be amazing. It is so beautiful. Good luck, we're rooting for you.

Sorry you had to put up with a miserable occupant in your room. was probably not a walker. Enjoying all your vids. I last did the PW in 1984. You cannot do the PW without going up and down. If you dont like hills, try walking in Holland.😄
Alright love.? That's a normal greeting. The man who offered you the drink was probably not a yorkshireman.yorkshire people are very friendly, but trying to get a drink or money from a Yorkshireman is like getting blood from a stone.😄

I call people 'love' all the time, it's quite normal. The further north you go, the friendlier people get! Great video 🥰
It is true. The further north, the friendlier people get. 🥰
Isn't May just a delight?! I've been a few times and never met her. Such a hero.
It's so cool that you are posting these videos effectively in real time. It's really like we are coming along with you. Happy walking!
I grew up on the hills above Hebden Bridge. The moor near May's shop, Gorple, & Walshaw Dene were our childhood playgrounds.
I'm really enjoying watching you hike along the Pennine Way.

I find it just as weird and slightly intimidating when people - usually American UA-camrs - start a conversation with "What is going on?"
At 5:36 you mention a callis, just as you arrive at Callis Bridge. LOL
Yes, it is normal to say ‘Hello Luv’, we say it to male and females….. it’s a Yorkshire thing.
I stayed in the summer house :) didn't sleep well on the bunk bed though. Happy trails.
