You are being somewhat courageous, as an American, veering into the hallowed ground of gun culture. I agree with those who have written, that the transformation of the NRA from a gun safety organisation into a gun manufacturers' lobby group was pivotal. The single, largest determining factor in my decision not to renew my work contract in the US, after six highly enjoyable years, was my concern for my schoolchildren's safety. In the years since, not one of my grandsons in BC, Queensland, or Kenya has ever had an active shooter drill, or attended a school with metal detectors. Yet each of them live in homes with hunting rifles stored safely, and have been on hunting weekends with their parents. They're also not paranoid about some 1984-style deep state, and learn civics at school.

Although the Spanish tried to occupy large swaiths of the Americas, mainly after gold and treasure, there was one unintended outcome. The plant foods from North America, Mexico, Central America and South America changed and improved diets around the world. Chillies and capsicum, corn, squash and pumpkin, potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa, vanilla, beans, a great big meat bird call a turkey. I could go on but you get the idea. Top of the list for me would have to be the humble chilli. It not only gave a flavor zing to every dish. It also masked the off taste of animal protein in the time before refrigeration. And made food safer to eat. Add in potatoes for carbohydrates, and beans for protein, and diets of the peasantry improved no end. And the best part was that these plants didn't need a lot of land to grow large crops. If I was going to point to the cause of breakdown of serfdom, tenant farming and populations less tolerant of the old ruling order in Europe and Great Britain, I would point to the dietary changes brought about by the new food plants brought back by the Spanish conquistadors, (and not the looted gold and silver). Over time, a healthier, more robust and longer living population, demanded, and got, change.

The major shift in US politics over guns happened over the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA) when the NRA, which hitherto had been focused on safety and sport, became increasingly overwhelmed by gun rights activists who were extremely partisan. Since they took over (around 1977 after a convention in Cincinnati) they have been ever-more organised and successful in not only weakening and eliminating gun control legislation, but encouraging political representatives to use the politics of fear to encourage citizens that government is evil and seeks to strip them of their rights - thus they need to be armed to protect them. Plus whenever there is a mass shooting (over 600 in 2023 alone, 10 in schools), the narrative is set that the only solution is for more people to be 'packing heat' to stop attackers - though the increasing number of innocents murdered may indicate otherwise. Added to this, what would in most countries be seen as cut-and-dry gun murders have been legalised in the US with terrifying laws like 'Stand Your Ground' where just being fearful of someone is grounds to kill them, as well as less well-known off-shoots like the 'gay and trans panic defense'. All of this is bankrolled by an absurdly wealthy and influential arms industry who already are able to buy members of congress, the NRA provides grassroots organisation to ensure maximum pressure and resistance to reform at the most local level. This, added to an increasingly conservative Supreme Court, makes meaningful reform near-impossible as even if local and state legislatures are able to push through gun laws, it gets struck down as unconstitutional. Given even proposed amendments like banning child labour have failed - I don't see a repeal of the second amendment happening, alas. Meanwhile, even if you survive being shot - private healthcare will often ensure you are left so impoverised you'll want to shoot yourself dead.

I heard that when the mayflower first landed, the only thing the settlers could do was work. They were Puritan, so all fun would have been banned. Seems not much has changed 😕.

Hi EB , I don't think anything will changed regarding gun laws unfortunately . I think its mostly these days tied to the rights of Americans ( Britain for example are nor necessarily geared to individual rights ) we a more for the interests of all as a society . But then maybe has something to do with us being a fairly small island nation and have been established for over a thousand yrs .

A broad sweep of history that filled in a few gaps.
For the Spanish it was as much to spread Roman Catholicism as settling the land. Not only did they have guns but horses, which would be a dynamic change to the way of life for many native tribes.
