That last point is BS. In the US there are millions of people that rent that keep guns to protect themselves in there apartment.
According to the Supreme Court, your body and everything contained within is your property. I'm going to assume you are storing your possessions (property) within the property that was leased to you. Millions? Tens of millions. For the protection of their properties while they live in apartments because they move for work, finances, education, or other personal reasons.

I was just going to bring this up. In a legal sense, an adult is their own property, and a minor child is in some ways the property of their legal guardian(s).
You, and your family, are your property and you have a right to defend them.
Your person (and family) is also your property (Unless they want you to force gene therapy on you) and replaces protecting the ranch from poachers with protecting yourself from breakins by crackheads.

A lot of early US history, the USA didn't have a standing army to fight in wars that popped up. They would send out a call for local militia's and anyone else with a gun willing to fight. There are loads of stories about American armies winning against the British in the revolutionary war and the war of 1812 (among many others) where it was just armies of citizens with guns showing up to fight.

Check out the history of the French and Indian Wars. Native Americans weren’t ready to ignore even small numbers of interlopers. Massacres of small stealing’s was a part of life.

The root was the founding fathers such as George Washington figured out that evil people were going to try to get into the government and and not recognise the people as the rulers of America and we would could end up back to the British situation again having people who did not qualify or were evil get into offices use governmet or army to keep themselves in.
The only way to keep from having a revolution again and again and again where lot of people die for something already fought, to stop evil government was to have the government employees are representatives, not real rulers and government never actually haveing enough power to kill everyone. That means everyone gets a gun because its only a question of when an evil political party gets into government and tries to use the army to kill everyone they dont like so they get the power and everyone having guns means that the person who tries that is a monkey because their going to fail.
The genocide of the opposing political party can not begin when they have guns because they are the best duelist on the planet be default.
Americans picked up that fact realised they better have guns and be a significant force compared to the military. Everyone coming from other countrys telling Americans that getting rid of guns is a great idea ignores the fact that the only thing keeping their own government form genocideing them is that Americans with guns have been puppeteering the US government to go fight evil when it happens. Americans without guns could not persuade the US government to stop being evil.
Hence, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

10:33 It technically was the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War, but most people now days just think it was the flag of the Confederate States of America.
It was made into their official flag in 1864 I believe, the stainless banner but still influenced by the AONV flag. I agree that people should know the difference but it's just semantics at this point and only known among history buffs.
Canada does have extremely strict "gun control" laws but despite that there is just a little under 3 million people with firearm possession/acquisition licenses, that is far more people who own guns privately in Canada than all the police and military combined.
Plus, long guns are generally not covered by gun control laws, although some dictatorial types would like to change that, too.
@@anonygent I was going to ask. I cannot imagine living in some remote part of the huge Canadian land mass without a rifle or shotgun for self-protection, not from people but from animals.
@@BTinSF Yeah, Trudeau doesn't care to look into the understandable ramifications of gun control because he is a city boy surrounded by guns to protect him. For instance, he wants to take away long rifles because "gun bad." He doesn't think about the obvious ramifications of having to call the police because you're getting mauled by a polar bear.
In Trudeaus "utopia" you call the police, who in most cases take over an hour to reach your house in optimal weather conditions, to collect your mauled corpse 45 minutes after you die and the bear has ran off somewhere to go maul another family of four.

I don’t know where he gets this notion that property ownership and gun ownership are directly correlated, that is completely false. A lot of people own guns for personal protection whether they rent or own their home. It’s funny listening to Kraut who I believe is Dutch try to explain American gun culture, that’s kinda like reading a book titled “How to be a Man” that’s written by a woman.
I think the historical connection is more correct than not, but modern society has just gotten more complicated.
The video is correct in a historical context. The very essence of the 2nd amendment was spawned from the actions Great Britain, through defending their property then fighting the Revolutionary War. This is the foundation and interpretation that still today encompasses self defense and defense from tyranny.
11:59 this is misleading. Home/land ownership is on the decline however people still own property, if you rent an apartment you still have personal property (your things) inside it, you still own a car ect so you still have property to protect as well as yourself as in self defense. In the last couple decades while home/land ownership has gone down, firearm ownership had gone up.

Anything that you are inside of...a car, house, apartment, office, church building, bus, train. Someone comes in to attack the people inside... those people have the right to defend themselves.
do not get excited by that chart..it's a 5 percent change..from 69 percent ownership to 64 percent.. and I think the video is wrong because it might be tied to property, but not necessarily land.. renters have families and stuff to protect too

Andre pardon my ignorance but im curious about the relationship between Portugal and Spain throughout history. As an American i know about each in relationship to America but not much about the actual relationship between Portugal and Spain. I would love to see you do something about the history of Portugal. Coming from you it would be very enlightening to hear it from a native Portuguese person.

I'd be interested also. For me, Iberian history kinda starts when they were a part of the Roman Empire. When Rome and Byzantium fell, Muslims conquered all of North Africa, and then Iberia. The Muslims never could quite make it over the Pyrenees Mountains on the border with France. A French king named Charles Martel defeated the Muslims in the battle of Tours, and this mostly ended the Muslim presence in Western Europe. I don't really know how Spain and Portugal went about creating their European monarchies, except that both countries were instrumental in the exploration and colonization of the Americas. Neither nation was especially noteworthy in my US history class except for a few minor mentions in Napoleonic Wars and a few later mostly pathetic and somewhat suspicious US wars with Spain. Then i know mostly nothing until there was civil war in Spain in the 1930s pitting Communists against Nationalists, that ended in a victory for Nationalist Francisco Franco over the communists. Franco became dictator and was neutral during WW2. I have no idea what happened to Portugal during or after Spain's civil war. I assume both countries are now part of the European Union and possibly NATO, but i am not 100% sure. 1000 years in one paragraph. I clearly know very little.
Spain has tried several times to "incorporate" Portugal into its territory, but the Portuguese have always managed to fight them off. So there's still some bad blood there.
I would also love to learn more about Portugal from someone from Portugal!
One thing you need to know about the American gun culture is the people who believe in this right are patriots they support the country our freedoms our God-given rights and these people will literally give their lives to protect their neighbors we watch out for each other and even when you just go to a gun range these are the most polite welcoming people you would ever meet, we love to share our passion for the sport but above all else we promote safety education and knowledge because these can be dangerous if you're uneducated and don't learn how to properly handle these types of items so education is absolutely paramount

The flag you asked about 10:13 is the most recognizable flag of the Confederacy, but that image alone was never the flag of the Confederate States of America. A flag that is very close to the image was the battle flag of Northern Virginia, General Robert E Lee's army. It is a pretty divisive image.
The "states rights" he brings up automatically is a great example of how lost-cause mythology permiates culture even overseas. It (and all the variations) is the flag of the enslavers and traitors. It's nothing else.

There’s a really great video about gun culture you should react to. It’s about a Japanese man that goes to Maine I believe and becomes proficient in shooting within hours. The Americans were great teachers. It should put anyone at ease that aren’t sure
About guns. The second half of the video shows how friendly and helpful the Americans are. It’s called “can airsoft translate to real firearm skill” by trex arms. The guy was a fast learner and it shows how serious we take drilling too. I just finished watching it, hope you check it out
I don't know as much as I should about this, being an American, but the main reason for guns is to protect against an evil government
That’s why our founding fathers wrote it into the constitution. They were very concerned about a tyrannical government having just broken away from (in their view) a tyrannical government.
Not just those on the political Right own guns, which is probably a surprise to many on the political Right. And defendable property doesn't just mean land; you still own stuff even if you rent your home.

According to castle law, you can't "defend your property" (as in your land) you can only defend your house (dwelling) and occupants from an intruder who is breaking in or trying to shoot you through a door or window.
That's just castle doctrine. In Texas there are penal codes for defense of property, and you can use deadly force if it is deemed necessary to prevent trespass, theft, and other crimes. Castle doctrine isn't the only self defense law.@@OkiePeg411
something i like to point out about the gun culture in America.. everyone knows who Wyatt Earp was right.. a sheriff during the "wild west"..well.. he passed away AFTER my mother was born in 1929 which wasnt really that long ago.. my grandmother lived in his times.

I live in rural Central America, where gun ownership is very common. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more guns than people in my state honestly.
For me, the value in gun ownership has less to do with property protection and more to do with protecting my family.
Things and property can be replaced- people cannot. And unfortunately laws do not keep bad people from owning a gun. I mean, drugs are illegal as well but people still sell them and buy them illegally.
If someone comes into my home with the intent to hurt my family, I will do everything in my power to make sure they don’t.
Also, here in the central US hunting is very popular so many homes own guns for hunting purposes.

@@ripvanwinkle2002 I think it does a great job explaining the basics to people who aren't history nuts. I especially think it's a great intro for kids and also people such as Andre here that can get the gist of what happened without having their eyes glaze over. It's Schoolhouse Rock.

More and more people I know are buying. None of us own our own home.
Reasons law-abiding peaceful Americans own guns: 1) Self defense. 2) Defense of property. 3) Regulated hunting, which helps keep native animal populations under control, and puts food on the table. 4) Defense of nation in case of foreign attack. 5) Defense from own government in case it turns tyrannical. The last was heavy on the minds of the Founders when they wrote the US constitution. It’s easy to look at our movies and criminal elements and assume gun-culture here is about glorification of violence, but it really has nothing to do with that. It about being prepared to meet an at times dangerous world at both an individual and societal level.
I am so happy you reacted to this video that explains how slavery was brought to the USA. When I lived in Europe I was often asked rather aggressively why we started slavery; My answer was always that we inherited it from European countries and that we eventually fought the bloodiest war of our history to rid ourselves of that horror. That answer was usually rejected followed by a comment on how terribly racist I must be to believe that excuse. There is no excuse for the racism that continues today in our society, but our conscience is clear on where it started.
I agree! Add to your comment the fact that at LEAST 10% of all slave owners were black. They fail to teach anyone on that issue! It also was not only a white man enslaving a black man, it was the British enslaving the Irish....the list goes on and on. I personally am sick and tired of being made to feel guilty for something that I personally never took part it, neither did any of my past relations.

Also, the first slave owner in the British colony was a black man who owned a plantation with African slaves.
The British were who brought slaves to the British colonies.
Also, John Carruthers Stanly a former black slave in North Carolina owned a plantation and black slaves.
Also, William Ellison Jr, a black slave owner. He owned 68 African slaves. There were hundreds of blacks who owned plantations AND black slaves!!!
Also there were some attempts to enslave native tribes. That didn't work because they knew the land and had help to escape through their own people. The whole thing was such a horrible time in the history of humans.@@OkiePeg411

The flag you mention near the end of the video isn't a flag about states rights, its the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, often used to represent the Confederate States of America (CSA) as whole, the southern states wanted to keep slavery legal, the southern states left the United States and create the CSA. Do not forget that John Locke and his theory of property was a great influence on the nation's founding. Property is also not just land, but any wealth. The fourth amendment expands on this, including your personal information.
Each person owns property in themselves. We own ourselves.

The Declaration of Independence's original draft read "Life, Liberty and Property" rather than "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".

This video like most others ignore the Bill of Rights which restrict the power of the federal government.
Most of these type of videos are basically propaganda made by foreigners.
I think you misunderstood at 3:50 since they cut to the US/Indian wars, but in fact were talking about the difference between that and the Spanish, since the Spanish did not allow citizens of these territories to own guns or would be severely punished.

Andre! I've seen people make comments in other reactions to this video about how this video is "wrong" or that "gun ownership isn't about property rights" and especially "THE SECOND AMENDMENT ISNT ABOUT OWNING PROPERTY" and all kinds of ridiculous statements to suggest that this video says anything that is wrong. To clear up any misconceptions about this video, understand that it is NOT talking about the second amendment or its purpose and modern relevance. This video is talking about the origin of gun culture, and especially popular ownership, being from British colonial policy towards property ownership and the personal defense thereof, and comparing it to Spanish colonial policy that didn't allow for popular firearm ownership, and the consequences of that choice. At the end of the video, the only assertion he makes is that property ownership is down, and that gun control policy might reflect that in the future. He doesn't once mention the second amendment, OR its reason for existing. Americans are (rightfully) very protective of the second amendment, and tend to lash out at people they perceive to be opponents of its basic philosophy, especially online. So PLEASE take any criticism of this video with a grain of salt, because 9/10 times, it's completely misplaced. The video makes very basic (and true) statements about the origin of American gun ownership being from British policy, that's all.
Criticism is very much needed, the narrator of the other vid sounds to be highly biased against gun ownership. You're right, this isn't about the 2A specifically, but the gun culture, as stated in the title, but there is still quite a bit that's presented that is objectively false, as well as opinion and projection. This video is trash propaganda as-is, so criticize away!

as far as the Democrat-Republican thing, it is far deeper than a single issue like gun ownership. for example, i am a left-leaning moderate -- in the middle, but i am a bit on the Democrat side of issues -- and i fully support a citizen's rights to own and use guns. i taught all 3 of my daughters how to shoot and maintain a wide variety of weapon systems. i also taught them tactics, skills, and knowledge of chemistry that would be handy if they were in a survival situation. and all of my girls are passing this knowledge on to their own children.
When we're all living in tents under the bridge, you'll need a gun. So the last point was dumb.
The real states rights flag is the Gadsden flag. It's not tied to slavery and says "Don't tread on me" and it's the only historic flag I see flown here besides the US and Texas flags.
I think you might mean the Gonzales flag. It's the one with a cannon and the word "Come and Take it!" It was flown during the first battle of the Texas War for Independence (from Mexico) in the town of Gonzales.
It's "Gadsden" and dates back to the American Revolution. As Americans, Texans are welcome to make use if it, but not to appropriate it :)

The government wanted to disarm the town of the cannon they were using for protection against Comanche raids.
The Texans knew Spartan history and raised that flag in defiance. The Mexican soldiers left without the cannon....
I'm from Florida, and Spain has had a HUGE influence on our state. Our government buildings are in the old Spanish style and we even have an old Spanish castle (that was constructed in Spain in the 1300s) as well as perserved Spanish bases, etc

they believe in state's right is more important that federal laws. One of these rights were to own slaves (a slave can be of any race, gender, religion or culture. Humans in every continent expect for Antartica have practice many different forms of slavery.)

The issue of gun culture and ownership is very divisive in the states. I’d not take any one video all that seriously, though this one is very very interesting. There are many sides to the issue, just as there are many views of historical events.
I am going to recommend a video by a real estate agent in North Carolina…it’s wryly funny, and gives a bit of his reaction to discovering the gun culture there, among other things he discovered when he moved there. To be fair, defending "our land" can also mean defending the whole of the U.S. I have seen some people own firearms in defense of themselves and their neighbors, as not all Americans are gun owners or able to defend themselves. That's not always the case, but it's fair to mention.

This video only covers HALF of the origins of gun culture here in the States. It gravely neglects to acknowledge how much our Revolutionary War traumatized us to instill the fear of big government, we have the 2nd Amendment to protect our properties, yes, but it is also to enforce protection of our rights and laws. A way to defend ourselves should our government try to instill tyrannical power over us.
As for the Republican vs Democrat issue, this stems back in history and the parties involved have been updated compared to the parties formed when John Adams became president. Most under the term Republican tends to be about not allowing the government to become too centralized it takes away the power from the locals, the state and counties, from doing their jobs. The Democrats have the opposite approach, to RELY on centralizing the government to solve all the issues. Some people have a mix of both, specifically the phrase financially conservative (Republican) but socially liberal. (Democrat.) There are some who go independent because both parties can be looney. And even then there are some loony independents, then again anything involved in American politics becomes a circus.
Personally I think you’ve proven to be more practical than a lot of people these days, on both sides of the Atlantic. Been amazed how fast you catch on to certain American topics, a lot of people outside barely care to look at these details but it’s those details that impact the perspective Americans have.

I personally like that kind of content as a hook or an interest in the subject, it's best to know the subject first though so you can laugh at the humor behind it.
The issue is there's a severe disconnect between the contemporary understanding of those in history that it has affected people's understanding of their place in their culture, country, and the world. Check out California missions/one days walk apart. They intended to do that in Texas/Mexico too, but it did not work out quite that way. The natives in Texas were nomads, so there was not a place to make a settlement for them.

All of those things were spelled out in the first 10 amendments of our constitution, also known as The Bill of Rights. These rights are those that are supposed to be protected and upheld. Protecting your life and your family is not governed by land owned or personal possessions. Meaning, if you care about your life and those who you love, and are willing to defend those lives, your living situation whatever on a huge ranch or tiny apartment has no bearing. Also let me clear up this misconception that most Europeans have in regards to guns in America. It is not the wild, wild West here, we have a lot of gun laws and restrictions in America and yes they do vary from state to state, but federal gun laws are the same in every state. For example, you can't own, possess or purchase a gun if you were found guilty of one the MANY crimes that disqualifies you from having a gun. There are also over 2,000 gun laws in America and unfortunately that number is going up . If you want to buy a simple rifle or shotgun for example, you have to pass a federal background check. As for actual machine guns and certain other guns , you must have a special license, a Federal Firearms License (FFL) which is very hard to obtain and so 99 percent of gun owners do not have it. So In comparison to most European countries who have very little to gun rights, it may seem on the surface in America we are lacking, but that's not reality because we do have plenty of gun laws and restrictions.
If you buy a firearm from a private individual you don't have to pass a background or show an ID. I can go to a gunshow and buy a firearm from a dealers "personal collection" without ID or background. But if I buy a NEW firearm from that same dealer I'd have to fill out all the paperwork/background/ID.

The question about the Confederate flag - they tried saying it was about "State's Rights" but if you look into it, they wanted the right to own slaves. This is why the flag is controversial. It is much more restricted in Canada. Also in the USA it is getting harder and harder to get handguns. However in the state I live in I can walk into a Walmart and buy a shotgun or a small calibur rifle. That is if you have not been convicted of a felony. I actually own 2 12 gauge shotguns and Remington 22. I do not own a handgun nor do I have the desire to do so. My shotguns with birdshot is more than enough to defend my home from any would be intruders.

@@kimson305 in my state, they require a waiting period for handguns. It has gotten harder at least in my state. Now there is always going to be a lapse at gun shows and pawn shops. But as far as going into a gun store and buying something new, there is a background check and a waiting period.
