- I mentioned wanting to make a daywear version of the gold and black gown I made for Arcana, and wouldn't you know after forty plus eyelets...this top took far longer than the gown to finish! It is a little more practical for wearing out and about though, and I'm really pleased with the finished garment.

There is nothing wrong with the cadence of your voice. People can slow the video down if they truly have an issue or your know they could just not watch. Honestly society really needs to keep their opinions to themselves.
Indeed! I tend to speed most videos up, as some people speak so so slowly and take forever to get to the point. Never had to do that, nor slowing down, with you, Bianca!

Lol I watch everything at 2x. It helps my ADHD tune in better. So TCH definitely doesn't talk too fast for me. 😅
I just play at 75% , which does make it easier for me to see the bits of drafting that I need to learn, so why people have to complain I don't know. My 43 year old daughter had a go at me for sounding like a teacher. I had to point out that (you guessed it) I am a teacher. No pleasing everyone!

I just want to say, I love the detail with which you verbally describe every step of your process. I'm an experienced seamstress and I really enjoy watching your videos while I'm sewing. I can listen without looking and completely understand what you're doing, look up at the end for the final modeled product and not be surprised by the finished results! I really only fully watch during the beginning while you go over the drafting portion because that is where my experience is lacking.

Bianca, that was a brilliant video! People get upset about sewing over pins because they don’t understand that the machine makes a difference. For you it might mean a dull or broken needle. For someone sewing on a “high end” modern machine, it can mean expensive, annoying, time consuming repairs ( did I mention expensive?). I was unhappy about just the thought of hand sewn eyelets, so I really appreciated your explanation about why you preserved through making them. I’m wondering if I can adapt that to my machine sewn eyelets (no pre-punching necessary) then work an awl through the fabric without cutting threads. I’ll have to experiment!
There is a chance however small that a broken pin or needle can go flying into your eye and blind you. Something I think about as I sew over my pins without safety glasses XD

I'm partway through my weight loss journey, and have decided, since I enjoy my clothes to be loose- fitting, I'll start with my coat and move inward layers from there 😅 thankfully I've only got 8kg more to loose, but 2kg has taken a year and I'm too impatient to wait another 3-4 years for more pretty clothes 😂
You should consider adjustable vintage garments (for example many pregnancy garments were created to last through many different sizes) also, there are many styles that can be reworked as you lose the weight. Why wait!? Wear what feels good now
Also wanted to add, if it’s too much of a time investment to create clothes and then have to rework them every year, you can also upcycle thrift clothes to look more vintage as a quick fix until you’re ready to invest the time. There’s a channel called Evelyn Wood that has a series around making thrift purchases into vintage looks.

For the sleeve, you could also pivot the elbow dart so that it goes into the wrist and then separate it into a style line to make a fitted two piece sleeve! Thats what I do when I want a slit or placket or lace up section of my sleeve. regular plackets are too fiddly for me, id rather just have it be a seam that becomes a slit, like the back of a pencil skirt.

It looks great on you. I found a Singer 301 in it's wooden cabinet/desk at Goodwill today. The whole Singer 301 appears to be there; but, it is very dirty and needs to be cleaned, oiled, and lubed. I felt very lucky to find it. The Singer 301 is all metal (no belts). You are correct the older, all metal, sewing machines are the best.

Isn't it funny how we can sew so many things and yet there's that one thing that gives us a mental block. Hooks and eyes. I would rather spend HOURS sewing 90 feet of rolled hem on a ruffle than sew on a hook and eye.
It's a hereditary condition. My mother has bins of skirts that she set aside, each one with some dreadful unknown problem she just couldn't tackle, only to find -- decades later, that all they lacked was a hook and eye.

I bought some of this fabric in an off-white thinking I would make pants but now I think I'll make a top like this.
I use masking tape for patterns because you can still write on it contrary to scotch tape and I just like the paper feel of it… BUT it dries out and after a few months it actually often peels off. So I find myself retaking old patterns when I want to reuse it. Maybe I should try other brands or just go for scotch tape. Thanks for one more brilliant video
If you buy the matt scotch tape rather than the shiny you can write on it! It is a bit more expensive though.

I sew over my pins. No problems. If your pins are at right angles to the foot, it's fine. Especially with my 1917 99k. It's a bit more disruptive on my modern machine.

Oh my gosh, this is beautiful. Bianca, I think you're a revolutionary. I own thousands of Vogue patterns but I haven't bought one since you taught me to draft my own patterns. I never thought of myself as being creative enough to draft a pattern, but I can do it. That's a revolutionary in action: teaching the world to be a different place. Thank you. On another note -- yes, you speak fast, but you also blink fast. I'm trying to replicate your eye make-up, but can't figure it out even when I have you in slo-mo. When you need a break from sewing, please do a make up video. I thought I had your technique down but I looked as if someone had given me two shiners ... not a good look to go with my self-drafted holiday dress. Random comments: I sew over pins as I was taught to do in 7th grade; buy sheets from the Goodwill to use as mock-ups (muslin has gotten way too expensive!). You're a great gift!!! Happy Holidays!

I would be so excited to see you create a block pattern for a friend or family member! I would love getting a refresher on creating a block pattern for a different body shape, especially someone like me who is less endowed in the, um, boobs. Got the hips though! 😆 I do understand that it takes SO much more work and time and effort to produce a garment pattern and a video for someone else! But I’m volunteering! I’ll be in the front range this spring and volunteering! Oh if I had block patterns for darted, princess seam, and raglan sleeves…The garments I could make!
I have a newer cast-iron machine (Husqvarna 2000 from ~1970), and I think it is truly the best of both worlds, it has a whole bunch of decorative and useful stitch settings, but it's also very robust - though a bit more complicated to fix than a machine with only straight stitch of course. It was my great-grandmother's to begin with, and I've had it for over 15 of its 50+ years now ❤
Another voice for a vintage Maschine! If it does zigzag (for you that also sew knits, not Bianca 😊) is perfect. I will never go back or new! 😅

Love this top so much!!! You inspired me to get a Singer 66 earlier this year. It is so powerful and reliable compared to my modern machine. Though I have to admit I miss a few of the modern features, so I tend to go back and forth between machines depending on what I'm sewing.
Older machines were well made and sturdy enough to handle pins. New machines are made cheaply and to last only a handful of years so you have to buy a new one

Your musings on magic systems makes me wonder if you like/would like Brandon Sanderson's (Mistborn, Elantris, Stormlight Archives) magic systems--they're so extremely logic based that they verge on scientific, which is a big part of why I love them. Not to mention the fact that he's an amazing author in general.

Re: machines. I LOOOVE my 1947 Singer 15-91 (Or just a plain 15). I got mine second hand around 50 years ago after working in a costume shop that had a bunch of Touch and Sews. Which I hated. My husband just bought a 66 for $33 at an auction. The only downside to them is that my aging body doesnt find them as portable as they were …

Not finished watching yet, but I found out the eyelet cams fit both style of old singer buttonholer attachments. It honestly makes me want to finally get the buttonholer for my vintage machine. Eyelets are pretty but oof agree, they're time consuming by hand. And stretching the fibers takes more hand strength than I can expend regularly. I do want to try using an awl first and lining it up to the hole. I don't see why it couldn't work like zigzagging off the side does. I was told there are the vintage cams, but there're also reproductions sold by the singer featherweight online shop, which are less expensive.

Your comments about puffed sleeves made me laugh. I am from Prince Edward Island, the land of Anne of Green Gables, written by Lucy Maude Montgomery. Anne, a red headed precocious orphan, was obsessed with acquiring puffed sleeves! It was her dream, and raised many times in the novel. She was a girl on the precipice of womanhood, with an over active imagination, and beloved worldwide as the book has been translated into hundreds of languages. I love your videos and the skills you demonstrate by making it all look so easy. If only!

Personally I love sewinf over pins. I think it's fun. I enjoy when the needle perfectly misses the pins. Don't let the whiners stop your process.

It's so very sad that people think they have a right to but you about how you do things or how you speak. I don't understand who has the time to invest in something that they apparently don't like! Or why they think you want to know! I have no problem understanding what you are saying.
As for the pins I too use an old machine and sew over my pins but really who cares?!? I love my heavy machine. I got it used in the early 90's we've been through a lot together! Thought I did pick up a singer 301 that is so easy to top stitch with! It's so very nice!

The last dress I did I quickly learnt that I needed to topstitch the seams to keep them flat and open... decided to do a zigzag over the seam to do both sides at once 😅

Could you perhaps use video from previous garments to illustrate your points in any given basics video? Like filming the basic theory and then adding in already made examples? Mock up sewing is boring, and I suspect mock up sewing only for illustration of the thing is even more so.

KUDOS for lining!
I was glad to see this one after tons of vids of some of the worst sewing ever that is a repeat of fast fashion from hell. It has nothing to do with style but lots of cringe worthy.... After its sewn up, it goes to the trash or whatever and more things from awful quality fabric is made.
Nothing wrong with the sound or whatever video issue whiner will comment on. They nitpick because they don't have any kind of life and especially in reality.
As a middle aged nerdy Goth, I use Dylon dye to ensure that all of my black clothes are the same shade of black. It's really good and easy to use if you want to refresh your clothes or just want to never deal with the various shades of black 😊.
I'm slowly recovering from devastating illness from the past two years and am walking again. Took a few month to be able to sit up without support for 5 minutes and now I can do it for an hour. I slowly work on my projects that I planned out and will wear endlessly for th next decade.

Hmmm... for the sleeve basics that you were talking about, could you include 1 type of sleeve thing every 2 or 3 garments, then edit them together with voice over to make the full video?
I suppose you could always do a full collection around sleeves, too 😂 that would be fun to watch.
The trouble is I need to include sleeve types that I personally wouldn't use on my own wardrobe, so muslin mocks ups is the only way 😅

I love it! Great silhouette and details! The lacing is super satisfying! Question: If you wanted the collar to stand high and then fold, is that just an additional height thing or a 2 part collar stand thing with a tall stand? I'm trying to figure out on peacoats like the collar is more dramatically tall before the fold than a dress shirt. And it might not fold all the way back.

Re the sewing over pins - definitely better avoided on a modern machine. But also because your videos are sped up people may not realise that you're not sewing over pins that fast! For me that is the key - to slow down just before the pin in case I get a direct hit. That is rare though. As you say the needle usually just slips past the pin. Very nice finished result. I like the rhythm of eyelets - well, any hand sewing. I use a mag lamp which means tighter, neater stitching for my neat freak me!

Question I have to ask you. I have a black constellation print fabric in my possession. It's about five yards total. The problem it's a Star Wars constellation print fabric. I don't do Stars Wars. I am certainly old enough to remember when it first debuted. I was eleven years old when Star Wars primered. It's a black cotton flannel with white constellation print. Once I realize I really didn't want the fabric I have been trying to off load it ever since. I would love 😍 to destash this fabric as 🔜 as possible. Preferably to someone who would appreciate it. You're the only person who probably doesn't have anyone who would be competing for this fabric print in your family. I am hoping you would be able to take this fabric off my hands. I am not going to charge you. I want this fabric out of my possession. I hope I get a reply from you soon. Thanks 😊.
