Just last month I made my own sloper according to your recommendation. And since then I made 3 blouses that are the most comfortable thing I ever made. And I sew a lot. You changed my wardrobe and my sewing habits. You are a legend.
I'm so hesitant to make my own sloper... I've bookmarked her legendary video lesson. But for some reason afraid to try. How long did it take you to draft and did you have to correct your draft many times?
I finally made a sloper thanks to Bianca, and I also have made the most comfortable tops ! I recently used it for a fitted dress and had to change it slightly with fitting , but it is such a game changer !
@@estherchandy6292 do not be afraid of multiple corrections! It will pay off. I have a sloper for pants and did at least five corrections, but managed in the end😄
I'm working on my sloper, so soon I will be drafting my own garments. You've inspired this 68 year old lady to try new things despite having sewn for about 50 + years. I love your channel and your presenting style. It's a lovely mix of sarcasm and self-deprecation.
As a health care professional, I appreciate the medical TMI bits here and there in your videos. For me, it makes you seem more approachable instead of the designing, sewing goddess I watch make awesome creations.
This is an old video but I'm rewatching your catalog while I work this summer! Just wanted to chime in that you've got me to start drafting my own things, and made me really comfortable making changes to patterns. I also feel you on the arm self-consciousness, and I got expensive tats on both of mine so now I want to show them off XD it's a good strategy
Im so happy you’re here too. I am learning so much about pattern drafting and i have been sewing for 58 years!!! Keep drafting and encouraging us to love this art!
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't really watch TV, I often feel so odd around friends when they keep mentioning programmes I've never seen and never will see 😂 The sequins really set off that fabric fabulously!! Well worth all the time and effort!
I can't remember the last time I watched TV. I don't have streaming services either. I watch my favorite UA-cam channels and the rest of my time is filled with other activities.
I don't do TV anymore, well accept the occasional viewing on ABC (national broadcaster) but we do that through the streaming app on the TV and the rest of our viewing is Netflix, a huge portion of our viewing is youtube.
When I was a teen like 20 yrs ago now (yikes) I hated commercial patterns and was making my own patterns and sewing them out of mom's remnants. She convinced me I was doing it all wrong and I quit sewing for a decade. And your heartfelt rants on pattern drafting healed that craft wound 💗 I'm technically a re-convert to pattern drafting bc of you 💪
I am so glad you’re on UA-cam and teaching pattern drafting. I’ve got the book and the pattern and will be making a sloper and block pattern. I love learning this! Thank you. And, I should add that in the 60’s we were taught to sew over pins. My new machine doesn’t like that, however. And, now I’m 70 and excited to learn these new things. Thank you.
to be completely honest you are the reason i love pattern drafting. besides the fact that i have no dress form, watching your vieos made me realize that i could start my sewing journey from home and build my own wardrobe, and aside from a few books i bought on it, most of my knowledge comes from watching your videos.
I love it! Also count me in the "people Bianca has convinced to learn pattern drafting" list. I do still buy patterns, but mostly I edit/self draft stuff I want to make. It's shockingly easy for my confident-beginner sewing skill level.
Last summer I made a bodice block because of the video you did on it! Took eight iterations, and I finished the last one by hand, using the last of the day's sunlight, thanks to a power outage from an afternoon thunderstorm. Sure, I could've waited until the next day, but it was the *eighth one*, I knew it was the final version, and dammit, I was gonna finish it!
In the past I always sewed over pins, I stopped when I bought the modern 'plastic' sewing machine. Early this year I purchased an antique hand crank machine & yes,! I sew over the pins with it😃
Thank you for your videos. I am 58 and sewing is a hobby. I only recently discovered you online and I am so glad I did. I had never tried patern drafting before. Thanks to you, I have now made my own block patterns and have tried drafting a few basic patterns. I used to struggle with commercial patterns. Now I have the confidence to design my own patterns for clothes (both modern and historic) and costumes for comic con based on images and I know they will fit me. Thank you again. I look forward to more great videos. 🧵❤
Beautiful! I was never allergic to cats...I got one that I was allergic to...he lived 19 years and I never told him I was allergic to him!!! He was the best! I just took my benadryl everyday and loved on him as much as I could!
I love watching you. I am now working on my skirt block and bodice block. I hate clothes shopping because everyone is wearing the same clothes. I love 1940s and 50s clothes, that is what I will sew. I hope I am one of your people. I have rescued all 8 of my cats and some have come to me with critters.
You say in this video that if you can convince even 1 or 2 people to try pattern drafting, you will consider your channel a success. Well, congratulations, you are officially successful! This weekend, for the first time in my 20 years of dabbling in sewing, I drafted a pattern for myself instead of just absolutely winging it. I made myself a little mermaid skirt with pockets (I have no hips and pockets help) to wear to Pow Wow with my dad this weekend. He was charmed and delighted, so thank you!
Where have you been all my life? You have convinced me to learn to pattern draft! I love EVERYTHING about you/this project/patterns! At 75, I have a new purpose. Blessings.
I’m definitely a convert to pattern drafting. I always thought I’d was some sort of mysterious skill I would never have but, thanks to binge watching your channel I can actually do it confidently
I've been sewing since I was quite young with garment construction. I've also worked in an alteration shop. But you have taken me to school today! I'd never heard of a sloper and haven't the foggiest idea how to find numbers for my size to draft one. Well there's more than one way to skin a cat. I've got a rough bodice pattern that I'd taken from a deconstructed jacket. I found my thrifted bedsheets and will set about creating a sloper tomorrow. I've got to go about this a little less conventionally but I'll get there. Thank you so much for all this hard work to teach us! ❤
💚🏵💚 I completely agree with Ramona: you have great arms and the sleeveless look is lovely on you!! Of course, it is most important that *you* be comfortable in whatever you're wearing.
As always, you produced a beautiful garment and the peplum looked amazing. I belly danced for years and we made our own costumes so Cartwrights was a must. Quality products and delivered within just a few days, it was a lifesaver. I love watching you create!!!
I cannot thank you enough for showing us how to do an all in one facing!!! I’ve been trying to learn how to do this from reading books and blog posts and I just couldn’t get my head round it. Seeing you do it in real time has just made something click and it’s soooo much easier than I thought!!! THANK YOU! ♥️
I have 2 vintage sewing machines. Betsy, a 1946 15 91 pot motor- awaiting rewiring. I also have Clothilde, a 1918 series 16 treadle that was my great grandmothers. Once I rewire Betsy, she will give dear old Clothilde a run for her money.
👌👏YOU look absolutely stunning, this outfit is so flattering to your shape. Picked up some good tips from this video. Can't wait to put them to use. Take care 🙂
You have most assuredly converted me to pattern drafting! I made my own skirt sloper from scratch and it was kind of a revelation. I have never worn straight skirts in my life because I am so curvy that anything that was small enough for my waist was too small for my hips. I tried on my mockup and thought, oh, wow, I've never seen a straight skirt look nice on me before! For the bust, I tried modifying a commercial bodice pattern but couldn't quite get there. I ended up ordering a sloper pattern from Pattern Lab. If you can get someone to help you take a lot of detailed measurements of yourself, it is a really awesome way to save yourself a lot of work. I've had a great time drafting from my custom blocks and have gotten lots of compliments on my clothes. 😊
I'm so glad!! I had that problem with "standard" sized skirts and dresses before I started sewing for myself, I was always three different sizes in a dress for my bust, waist, and hips 😂
Let me start by saying just how much I am impressed with your videos! Initially I came to learn more about making clothing for my wife from a bodice that I can repeatedly modify. However you touched on the main reason why I picked up sewing again…I hate todays mens clothing styles. I’m from the “Sharp Dressed Man” era…not the too tight is right gang. I started to notice the cuts of suit jackets changing so that most two button versions stop right at or just above a man’s private part, as if this is what the designer was targeting attention towards. I used to play football and now with God’s help have lost 70 plus pounds to be within 10 lbs of my former playing weight. Now my goal is to recreate my wardrobe that makes me feel good about myself vs what is trending….so like yourself I’m going vintage! I love the 1940 & 50’s style…including hats and bow ties… so thanks again for the inspiration…please keep up the great work and the side bits of knowledge you dispense…very motivating Lawrence
I just joined your Patreon. Hoping to get more in depth pattern drafting abilities. Lol. Thank you so much for what you do and being so kind and open. ❤❤I'm so happy i found you.
62 year old seamstress here. Wish I knew about pattern drafting 50 years ago - especially since I've got a weird body type. Still working on my sloper, but I'm about 1/2 done. You've inspired at least one person to pattern draft. Also, I was inspired to buy a vintage machine last summer. I love my 1957 Singer 201 - though not enough to tattoo the serial number on my body. Hope your kitties settle down and quit hurting you. Never saw the all in one armhole/neckline facing. Great idea. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely fabulous to see you use a vintage machine I have two a hand owned and a treadle gorgeous machines 🥳🥳🥳great make love it 🥳🥳 I’m an hourglass figure twin 😂😂 so many vintage styles to sew
You succeeded in guiding me through block drafting on your blog, with help here, and i've made a wearable mockup, and now an all-in-one sleeve wearable mockup in crepe. i learn so much here, and i really appreciate the help. im going to make a gown to attend a november wedding now!
I'm so happy that you decided not to stay at Uni and work for Museums. It means, way over here in Australia, I get to learn so much and also be entertained by your wonderful sense of humour. You do know, don't you, that at some point we will need to see a photo of "High School Vogue" Bianca?
I too am happy that you're here.😊I had given up on making my own clothes back in the day. Lack of knowledge and I needed visual and auditory demonstration, your channel has helped me to begin exploring the world of vintage style and sewing techniques. I know your pain with kitties and skin ailments. This too shall pass my friend.
Well, you convinced me! Today I drafted a pattern myself. I wanted a shirt with a waterfall collar (hope that this isn't me translating a kind of neckline from Dutch very literally in English) and I could not find a pattern. And then I remembered your video's and with a little help from the internet I drafted a pattern! I will be sewing it tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed...
You’ll have that machine your entire life, they are amazing. Planned obsolescence is so wasteful. I had to throw out several plastic machines before I discovered vintage machines. I love the 99, also the 66 and 201. I have a plastic do serger and plastic brother for special stitches, I’m not a purist, but there’s just no comparison. I was so glad when you bought that 99!
I've never seen a sequin or a bead I have passed over!! now you inspire me to quit hoarding and get to using them !! LOL the top is Amazing and the beading is such a beautiful touch You inspire us for more than sewing we have a way to draft actual blocks to our own measurements that have been invaluable Thank you so much!!
I love this! I once had a scrap of a beautiful fabric that was just big enough to make a choker. I just couldn't let this fabric go -- I have no regrets. It still makes me happy everytime I see it and everytime I wear it. Dear B: It has been more than six months, and I must say, I am in need of some Side Husselen. All this rain is making me feel -- writerly. Looking forward to your next installment. Yours, M.
I always look forward to Thursdays and it's because of you! Another great look! I wish I could find a skirt style that works for me, I would love to make and wear those cute tops! Thank you for all you do
There are lots of different styles of skirt. Consider getting some basic muslin or even raid the rag box and make mock ups one by one until you find a style for you and your shape. Even the length makes a big difference in what looks best on someone. Also, the different tops she makes would all look good with pants in various cuts.
The skirt shape is not my issue, it's the waist. I am not comfortable with anything thight around my waist. So, no belt. Even when I was thin, the whole skirt just won't stay in place. It's always pulled up somewhere or too far down on one side. I thought it was because I am short waisted, then because I was too plump. I just don't know how you all can keep your skirts in the right place around your waist. Pants are easier but still uncomfortable.
Such lovely work. I am so glad you found a time period which complements your silhouette, since we are taught from so young that we are not enough. We certainly are, every one of us, with our own unique fit.
I also went to fashion design school after spending my middle and high school years as an avid sewer and learned that I wanted nothing to do with the fashion industry! Now I am a mental health counselor and I sew in my free time 😄
Love this channel thank you for your wisdom and experience. FYI I was taught to sew over pins to keep the material in place. Making your own clothes allows you to feel comfortable and look great in the clothes that suit your shape no matter what size.
Your videos are why I finally bit the bullet and worked through the multitude of mock ups to get a sloper that fits well. So you definitely converted me to pattern drafting. This top is fabulous and the sequins just elevate it. Hope your rash gets better. I lucked out when I worked in vet med that I never got it, but I always took *all* the precautions.
I love the idea of getting the serial number tattooed! I find that getting tattoos on body parts you feel self conscious about really helps. When you look down and see a beautiful piece of artwork, you no longer get distracted by perceived imperfections.
I initially also thought this was a cute idea but now I'm not so sure as it would look very similar to the number tattoo used in WWII and that might cause offence?
I feel like numbers all on their own may be suspect, but in amongst an entire sleeve of things less so? So many people get important dates now a days (wedding day, days kids were born, etc) that I think as long as they aren't the only tattoo it wouldn't be too reminiscent. I definitely would consider getting my publication date in roman numerals if I were ever so lucky to have a book published!
I absolutely love your videos. I have been watching them and have always wanted to draft my own blocks and have done so recently but almost afraid to do a muslin thinking it's not going to come out correctly. Right now I am working on fitting a purchased pattern. I have been avoiding sewing clothing for awhile because of fitting issues. You are a great inspiration and I will do a muslin next week to see if it fits. Thanks again for these wonderful videos!
I have signed up for a class so I can learn to make my own "sloper" and thereafter draft my own patterns - inspired by you, Bianca! I can't wait to start experimenting. As you say, life is short and we need to have fun 😊 I don't like my upper arms much either, so I get that, but when it's super warm weather, sleeveless tops and dresses are the answer. And this one turned out gorgeous 😍
I am very much looking forward to finishing my bodice blocks, inspired by this channel. Unfortunately I don't have the mental capasity for fitting the mockups right now, so I'm back to adjusting existing patterns in my stash for a little while.
I LOVE your videos! They inspire me to sew, and I can watch/listen to them over and over again while I’m working on different projects. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making these!
Hi! I’ve been hobby sewing for 2 years and now starting to explore altering patterns and drafting. Hard and overwhelming to learn this on my own via books and online, so very grateful for your brilliant videos! Thanks so much ❤️✌️
I'm so glad I found your channel late last year. Every video gets me motivated on my own sewing projects and I always learn something new. Like the all-in-one interfacing is such a cool sewing hack! One day I'll have watched enough of your videos to attempt a block pattern of my own. Looking forward to your future sewing projects 🙂
I’m new to watching UA-cam (only the last 4-5 weeks) and already totally addicted to this channel!!!! And as an eager and enthusiastic homesewer I’m amazed how ‘obvious’ you’ve made dart manipulation and pattern drafting ….. so much so that I’m in the middle of drafting my first ‘easy fit’ bodice block …. I’ve no other sewing friends so measuring myself has been a bit of a giggle but I’m getting there (I think …. ) Up to version 4 and not necessarily expecting a ‘perfect’ fit but learning sooooooo much about my body shape !!! 🤣🤣🤣 so, yeah ….. seems like you e achieved your aim of 1-2 people drafting patterns for themselves 😁
Thanks to you, I have learned how to and actually drafted my satisfactory bodice block pattern. After several mock-ups I was able to get a nearly perfect fit. I am currently creating a shirt out of my last mock-up (yes, I am decorating the muslin with decorative trim and buttons) that I should be able to pair with a skirt that I had no matching top for. Next task will be to figure out how to add sleeves. Lucky for me, I do not mind going sleeveless so I can save that project for later. Thanks Bianca!
I have the same issue with bandaids. Sensitive skin bandages, with silicone adhesive is the way to go. I can use the regular kind on my hands and feet, but anywhere on my arms and legs needs more delicate treatment. Equate (Walmart) makes an 8 pack of large bandages, but I think rite-aid and Walgreens have them now too.
I love your videos! I never did like sewing and often the directions were a puzzlement to me. I wish I had had you as a teacher. It is also much clearer now. I mainly use my 35 year old Viking machine to sew vintage 1950’s looking calendar tea towels as Christmas gifts. I remember those and am thankful that they are available to cut out and seam on Spoonflower in a heavy linen/cotton/canvas material. I constantly burn my fingers pressing down the double folded seams. Also, I do not have a blood pact with my machine about sewing over pins. I snapped a needle every time I tried it. Friends and family love the vintage looking calendar tea towels which makes me happy until I have to sew 24 of them. On the plus side, I have developed a keen eye for measuring 1/4” seams by eye and also have developed asbestos fingers. LOL! Keep up your channel, it’s wonderful!
Thank you Belinda! I have a constant tea towel problem of finding cute ones at the antique mall but not actually having a kitchen yet so I'm not allowed to buy kitchen things 😂
You look gorgeous in this outfit in the reveal! Be brave and go sleeveless! I have drafted my font and back bodice from your video tutorial, took a quick break to sew myself a fancy dress for an event, but my plan now is to use your tutorials to make the rest of the slopers then blocks. I really think it will take my sewing to the next level!
You are an inspiration. I love putting on your videos while I sew for sewing inspo. I'm not nearly as talented as you and I'm usually sewing off of a pattern while entire outfits spring from your skull fully formed.
This video was some time ago, so you may not see this, but here goes anyway. I didnt realize I had an allergy to latex until I realized the sores on my hands and wrists ENDED where the latex washing up gloves ended! Yikes! So I had to use gauze and surgical tape instead of bandaids too. I see there are non-latex bandaids available now though. Love all your wonderful videos! 💖💕🇨🇦
You definitely made me a convert for pattern drafting! The clothes that I self drafted just look and fit so much better than anything else I have ever sewn. Would love to know how to draft a winter coat next.

the nice thing about sleeveless shells is that you can wear open cardigans and jackets over them without overheating. :D

I love the 1940 & 50’s style…including hats and bow ties… so thanks again for the inspiration…please keep up the great work and the side bits of knowledge you dispense…very motivating
Lawrence
Thank you Lawrence!
I love the sequins & beading you did to the blouse.
Thank you Cindy!
I noticed your video on how to draft patterns. Once I have recovered from surgery and am able to focus, I am going to watch it.
I just joined your Patreon. Hoping to get more in depth pattern drafting abilities. Lol. Thank you so much for what you do and being so kind and open. ❤❤I'm so happy i found you.
Thanks for the link to Cartwright Sequins!
That shirt it very flattering on you. Beautiful!!
Thank you Cherisse!
Wow the 1960’s is soooo cute!!!! I love the sequins! I had a lot of 60’s vintage growing up and it all was covered in sequins.
Thank you Thea! I love a sparkle so it had to be done ✨
Rw is the worst. Thank you for taking care of the kittens! They are hard not to hug.
I just bought a pack of silk pins, for occasions where sewing over the pins is the best option.
You’ve convinced me. :)
Absolutely gorgeous and the sequins were the perfect finishing touch! Such talent!
Thank you!
Awesome! Good work! ❤️
I loved the commentary even more than usual on this video; couldn't tell you why though. That BROOCH in the beginning and ending too 🤩💖 just gorgeous
Thank you Jenna!
I'm so happy that you decided not to stay at Uni and work for Museums. It means, way over here in Australia, I get to learn so much and also be entertained by your wonderful sense of humour. You do know, don't you, that at some point we will need to see a photo of "High School Vogue" Bianca?
Thank you Kaytie! Thankfully all high school photos are lost to myspace pages and hardrives long since past 🤣
Thanks Janice! 🖤🐈⬛
Please stop putting yourself down. You ARE elegant and clever. I am learning a lot. Not brave enough to pattern..yet!
Good luck!!!
Looove sequin adding! There must be more sparkle in life🤩🤩
I love the print of that cotton and the sequins add just the right amount of sparkle. Don't dislike your arms, I think they are very nice arms.
Thank you Melody!
Thank you Alexandra!
I've had kitten-induced ringworm. I had a similar experience--it's mor annoying and unsightly than anything. Here's to a speedy recovery!
Yours, M.
A SH video is coming soon, but not about writing as it hasn't been happening over here 😩❤
@@TheClosetHistorian Oh, how I understand that problem!
Thank you Julie!
Oooh Bianca! Soooo stylish. Don't like sequins but, my eyes have been enlightened, may opened! What a lovely blouse. Thank you. Lu x
Thank you! ✨
Love this! Gonna attempt to draft a sloper from your tutorial soon!
Thank you Talar!
Such lovely work. I am so glad you found a time period which complements your silhouette, since we are taught from so young that we are not enough. We certainly are, every one of us, with our own unique fit.
Thank you! ❤
Thank you Charmaine!
This top fits you just perfect. It's very pretty. I hope you and kitties three heal up soon!
Thank you!
You have convinced me to draft my own patterns and for the first time in my life clothes I make fit me so thank you very much for your teaching
Damn it! I wish I'd have thought of getting my sewing machine cereal # worked into my sewing themed tattoo!
Thank you Flynn! Good work, by the time our vet confirmed it was RW it was far too late for me 😂
I too have been lured over the pattern drafting side and I love it. Next project will be a 1930’s Hooverette!
@@TheClosetHistorian ah yes - if it was part of a bigger design!
Thank you Melinda! You can do it!! A fitting pattern takes patience, but it is so SO worth it ❤️
I have signed up for a class so I can learn to make my own "sloper" and thereafter draft my own patterns - inspired by you, Bianca! I can't wait to start experimenting. As you say, life is short and we need to have fun 😊
I don't like my upper arms much either, so I get that, but when it's super warm weather, sleeveless tops and dresses are the answer. And this one turned out gorgeous 😍
Thank you Mara! I hope the class is super useful!
Thank you!
Amazing blouse with all the shine! You explain really well how to do wonderful garments! Gorgeous look too!
Thank you Iara!
Hi! I’ve been hobby sewing for 2 years and now starting to explore altering patterns and drafting. Hard and overwhelming to learn this on my own via books and online, so very grateful for your brilliant videos! Thanks so much ❤️✌️
Thank you! Keep at it and you'll cross over into pattern mastery in no time!
That is a beau fully simple top and looks fantastic on you. x
Thank you Christine!
I love this resourcefulness, doing what you can with leftover fabric. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you Barbie!
Thank you! More sewing coming very soon!
Beautiful! I must confess that browsing through Cartwrights is one of my guilty pleasures.
An excellent use of browsing time! Thanks Linda!
Thank you Louise! Keep at it and drafting will become second nature in no time! ✨
This makes me so happy to hear! 🧵✨
This top looks fantastic on you!
Thank you!
Stunning! Love it.
Thank you!
Well you can count me as one person you taught and inspired to draft patterns. Thanks for showing how achievable it can be.
Thank you Heidi! ❤
@@TheClosetHistorian Don't buy that negativity! LOL! Besides, all but one of mine are Christmas gifts for the year 2023.
Thank you! Summer temps require bravery 😂
You are an inspiration. I love putting on your videos while I sew for sewing inspo. I'm not nearly as talented as you and I'm usually sewing off of a pattern while entire outfits spring from your skull fully formed.
Thank you! Working from a pattern is totally awesome! All sewing is good sewing I say ❤️
Would love to know how to draft a winter coat next.
sequins are magical and therefore perfect for you!
