    The etymology of "yoke" (in several languages) means "to join". Probably mostly known (in its noun form) as the wooden bracket that connects working/draft animals - I wonder if the clothing use of yoke comes from this (as it joins other pattern pieces around the neck and shoulders) or if just takes its definition from the general "to join"?
    Thanks for another great tutorial! I think I'm finally brave enough to draft my own bodice pattern.

      It could also come from the yoke as in "a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plough or cart that they are to pull." given that a yoke in garments is normally at the neck or top of the garment.

      There are also yokes that you put over your shoulders that have buckets/loads hanging off each end. They probably land right on the same spot as the shirt yoke.

    A yoke is the wooden piece that goes across the shoulders of working ox or horses from which the rest of the harness connects. A yoke in a blouse also goes over the shoulders so maybe that’s where it’s from?

    Hello Bianca. As always, thank you much for sharing your knowledge with us. 🖤 Do you think this kind of bodice would work with long sleeves, or would the all in one design restrict arm movement and be unconfortable ?

    • @biblicallyaccuratecockroach
      @biblicallyaccuratecockroach 3 роки тому

      If it's fitted properly there shouldn't be a problem. It's easier to fit and alter a separate sleeve, and those can be made more tight fitting than an all-in-one, but there are styles that are built as an all-in-one body and sleeves. Dolman style sleeves for instance are like that. Kimonos I think are also built like that, the entire thing built from two pieces, front and back and sewed at the shoulders, the sleeves built into the cut. And I don't know how historical it is but I've seen fantasy dresses be made from a single long piece that you fold in half then cut a head hole into, the rest of the shaping being made from the side seams and potentially a few darts. So if you want to do an all-in-one it should be fine with a bit of fiddling 👍

      I recently bought brocade coutil and I’m making a dress form and a corset out of it. Wonderful material to work with! Here in Canada getting certain types of fabric can be really difficult and buying from the US may be cheaper but the cost of shipping is more than the items costs. But this beautiful fabric I managed to find at a place called Farthinggales in Montreal. $45/meter. Yes you heard me right lol. But it’s beautiful! I really enjoy your videos and the fact that you shaped like myself really helps. Your awesome!

    You're amazing! This all looks so easy and you inspire me to try changing my basic block.
    Did your Calico Shirt enjoy it's ironic outing?

      Thank you Kaytie! I did indeed wear the shirt to Calico, but it was a little too windy for setting up a camera well to get proper photos, I'll have a video clip though!
