If this was a videogame, both of these endings could be relevant: You would get decide whether to blow yourself up or hand over the female Darkseeker. In essence, you would be faced with the choice of either restoring humanity or allowing the new age of Darkseekers to supplant them.
That would be a great game, specially if it was made similarly to "The Last of Us", and it had the initial levels set within the days in which the infection was starting, a thing that zombie games/series, or in this case, vanpire zombies, lack is a sizeable chunk of the story set within the initial/mid stages of the outbreak, "Fear the Walking Dead" was looking promissing, but they made the dumb decision to fastforward the outbreak, turning the show into just a copy of the walking dead.
If they stayed with the original ending, this movie could have been legend. ... Wait, wait! What are you doing? Where are you taking me? What are the bats for? Aw! No, not in my face! Ow!
When I was younger I saw the original ending first. My dad is a fan of Will Smith, so when he saw 'directors cut' on Pay-per-view he couldn't not see it So the next day, I told my friend about the movie- She had seen it a little before at the movies. We got into a little argument about how the movie ended- I didn't know there were two endings at the time >
2:50 I think "Carmilla" counts as the second most adapted vampire book: "Vampire Lovers" "The Blood Spattered Bride" "Blood and Roses" "Crypt of the Vampire" "Nightmare Classics: Carmilla" etc.
I am glad there is at least someone to think of poor Camilla ! All those adaptations, and not one even close to the book, at least not that I have seen. Maybe one day there will be a good one following the book...
I took a “Vampire Tour” in New Orleans last year where the guide explained local Vampire folklore as we toured the French Quarter. The folklore of vampires sounds almost exactly like the Hollywood interpretation of zombies: undead monsters that rise from their grave to feed upon the living. Shambling, mindless, driven by only their thirst/hunger.
It seems like the 'I Am Legend' movies are the only vampire movies that consistently star some of the best and most badass actors. I mean, really, Vincent Price, Charlton Heston, AND Will Smith? Are you fucking KIDDING?!
I say 'consistently' because while Interview with a Vampire had Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderez, and Kirsten Dunst, Queen of the Damned didn't have anybody so fantastic. And Dracula did have Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Gary Oldman, Dracula 2000 and 3000 were not so lucky.
got a copy of Matheson's "I am legend" 10 years ago...one of the few books I have read more than once, cover to cover, and have a copy of all 3 movie versions...the Vincent price version is the best, despite the internal monologue being redundant...Price's acting is more than adequate to convey his inner dialogue...no overdubbing necessary...still the best of the three...
The book's ending would have been easier to sell to audiences; the part everyone leaves out is how the book very carefully makes it clear that the vampire society that planned to execute Neville were just as brutal, if not more brutal, as they callously killed the vampires outside of Neville's house.
We had a DVD copy that asked if you wanted to alternate ending before it played, my family was soooo pissed at the reworked ending when we finally saw the original. Also if you have a chance try to find the online "teasers" of other survivors; they're scarier than anything in the movie
The first time I seen this movie it was from a old ipod I bought that hadn't been reset yet. The alternate ending was the only version in the ipod. I loved the movie and when I seen it on tv and tried to show my family I was disappointed that it was a different ending, they didn't get the movie and it was confusing trying to describe it to them since i was only in middle school at the time.
Not only does the original ending sound better, I think that it would challenge audiences in a way that would make it MORE successful. It's a bittersweet ending, but it would leave a better impression as you left the theater.
I Am Legend is one of my favorite books of all time. It's super short and a fantastic read. I probably read it at least once a year. I would love if someone adapted it properly.
The "he is the bogeyman in the night" worked in the book because the protagonist was also killing those "new vampires" who were basically still human and had it under control. Those new humans had also killed and actually eradicated the true vampires, so the vampires themselves were still a threat. However in I am Legend up to that point the darkseekers and all other creatures that had been mutated were shown to be aggressive constantly without any actual impetus, it was just their nature. Yeah, they care for each other in a sense but they are still dangerous. So by suddenly saying that they have feelings and all, the movie looses the original message as it basically expects us to be fine with people being constantly aggressive and violent.
@@markuscriticus8278 The difference is that the "undead" vampires this posed a threat to the living vampires. The living vampires callously disposed of any undead vampires they came across; at the end of the book when the living vampires show up to arrest Neville, the book emphasizes their utter brutality when dispatching the undead vampires.
Can't really say this new version of humanity is "superior". I mean, I dunno about you, but I like not being at risk of burning up into a crisp for twelve hours a day.
Honestly I wasn't really big on the movie in general. I love the story and Will Smith does make a killer performance, but having the vampires appear only as the near-mindless and feral monsters was a huge letdown. The title doesn't make sense anymore when you look at the 2007 film; Robert Neville was the new bogeyman for the rising civilization, but in the Will Smith version there wasn't a vampire analog for the human race. The entire subplot with Ruth in the book was to drive home that there was a new form of mankind rising to the apex in the world, and Neville was the terrifying relic of the previous empire. Definitely one of those stories that if you can't do the source material justice, don't bother; all they wound up doing was disappointing a lot of Matheson fans.
Oh my, I'm going to come back and watch this! I Am Legend is an obsession of mine, I've reasearched alot about Matheson's work on the novel, and have gleaned way too much information on the film adaptations, both released and never produced. I even own several editions of the novel, from 1954 onward, I'm just sick.
In the 1954 edition (which I'm guessing is the first edition) does it have the short stories after I Am Legend? Honestly I'm not very interested in those and just want I Am Legend. But if you want some really interesting work by Richard Matheson, he did write 16 episodes of The Twilight Zone. One of which is the most famous episode, Nightmare at 50,000 Ft. And there's one episode he didn't write but has a very similar ending to I Am Legend in that, the end is not a plot twist but a big revelation by the main character, Nothing in the Dark. He also wrote a short story called Duel, which was adapted into a movie that was Steven Spielberg's first film.
They couldn't go out into sunlight like vampires. Sometimes zombies *seem* nocturnal but it's just because they are more dangerous at night when we can't see them... and because it's scarier for the audience.
Fun fact the reason the author didn't like Vincent Price's movie despite it being more faithful is because Vincent Price was already famous for playing movie villains by that point, so he thought the movie's twist was be ruined because everyone would see Price and immediately assume he was bad guy right off the bat. And he wasn't wrong judging by what critics at the time said. It's is the same problem Stephen King had with Jack Nickelson in The Shining, ironically enough. I think that's one of the reasons why the new movie spent time making Smith's version of the character more likable, so the twist would hit harder when it came.
But I don't remember those children at all and the others coming for the captured female.. I could have sworn that was the version of the movie I've seen.. maybe some countries aired that version?
I see your point but I AM LEGEND's "vampires" are very different from Romero's zombies in execution They're closer to the modern infected than classical zombies
Is it bad that I didn't even know the Darkseekers were supposed to be vampires until I Googled this movie a few years ago? I just thought they were mutant humans and dogs, simply mutated by the virus with a bad reaction to sunlight.
I watched this movie once. I never will again. And that's not due to a lack of quality or entertainment on the movie's part. It's because of the damn dog.
9:42 oh Arnold has the range for this, for sure. You'd like End of Days. Satanists instead of vampires, but there's plenty of occult goodies and blood. 😉
the film is nothing at all like the book and completely missed the main theme of the book. Neville as the last man alive has passed into legend among the vampires which we see in the final words of the book before Neville is executed by The New Society "He turned and leaned against the wall while he swallowed the pills. Full circle he thought while the final lethargy crept into his limbs. Full circle. A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend"
Sometimes i prefer a movie with a dark ending, it makes it more realistic, its an ending youd love to hate cuz life isnt all sunshine and rainbows, shit happens. You love that its realistic but you hate that HAD to go that way.
I think this movie was one of Will Smith's best performance...unfortunately ever since I got my pupper Wolf (who is a German Shepherd) I can no longer watch this movie! Marley!!!!! 😭😭😭
I guess its because the virus in this version was manmade thats why it wasnt really meant to be but a mistake to be rectified.. I wonder if they stuck with the books real origin of the virus and ending..btw kinda reminds me of the girl with all the gifts
Sure from their point of view he's evil but don't try to villainize the main character either. Don't forget they killed his family and most of population as well. They always try and make man evil but I'm this case the dark stalkers killed possibly millions of people just in New york
Fake Name That just how evolution works. They're little more than just the next animal. That was the point. Also, they were the population aside from the people that just died from other parts of the vampocalypse.
Fake Name Well after a plague kills like 99.999999% of all humanity and I've spent years in solitude and misery after witnessing my family die violently and awfully and having to violently strangle my final remaining companion, a dog I have raised from her pup years, and finally realizing that not only was I not helping my test subjects, but I was hurting them and their society in which I had become a legend among them and feared as a monster and murderer for doing what I thought was the right thing, I'd probably just kinda give up too....Oh man now that I list everything maybe the suicide ending wasn't so dumb. Nah. Still pretty dumb though.
Fake Name Yeah but wouldn't some big dumb "Humans vs Monsters" sequel or continuation of the story kinda go against the intelligent idea behind the original ending? I mean we just went "NOOOOO VAMPIRES ARE PEEEEOPLE!" in our collective mind it wouldn't make sense for Neville to choose the path of Johnny Rico, a brainwashed murderous monstrous tool of a fascist state in "Starship Troopers", and say "The only good vamp is a dead vamp!". However, let's not start debating that movie and book too because I can tell you from experience that it's not a good idea to even really mention that on the internet. That being said, I still love that book and movie and it deals with a lot of the same themes as "I am Legend".
This is a prime example of why test audiences only make things worse
Fire whoever chose the theatrical ending.
omfg that original ending was mind blowing! Why the fuck did they replace it with that cliched crap ending?!
Studios tend to pander to focus groups since it makes them more money.
(jazz hands) Capitalism!
I prefer the scrapped ending.
Same
Everyone does.
It's more like the orginal ending

That ways will smith prepared for this role and new role was his most serious in a while makes me respect him more as an actor and man.
The alternative ending is amazing.
Also, the reason for the title. As you said. He became the monster in a different perspective.
The original ending sounds much better. I liked the movie OK, but it was missing something... Now I know what was missing.
This movie is horrible no matter the ending.
Oh, that cameo just make me realize Maven is Lindsey’s fashion fairy.
Vincent Price has been uttered!
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
If they stayed with the original ending, this movie could have been legend.
...
Wait, wait! What are you doing? Where are you taking me? What are the bats for? Aw! No, not in my face! Ow!
JohnnyElRed damn man. just damn.

Extremely GREAT advice...I'm going to try and remember that every day of my life.

creature voices by Mike Patton?
Anyone else think this is an epic point that gets overlooked?

THIS REVIEW. Thank you. Thank you. I Am Legend was one of my favorite books, and that movie was so frustrating and a huge let down.
We had a DVD copy that asked if you wanted to alternate ending before it played, my family was soooo pissed at the reworked ending when we finally saw the original. Also if you have a chance try to find the online "teasers" of other survivors; they're scarier than anything in the movie
You’re actually pretty hilarious! And your content subject already caught me XD new sub
Great review.
The first time I seen this movie it was from a old ipod I bought that hadn't been reset yet.

That Doug Walker cameo was perfect

This movie, I-Robot, the Men in black series, and Independence Day -- they're my fave Will Smith movies 💖✨😁 ty for this awesome review

changing the ending isn't that much of a surprise. especially in a world where the m. bay movies made so much money
Can you do a review on Van Helsing?
13:17 "Well...Fuck you then!" XD
i love this film it shows that some things shouldn’t be fixed or cured and need to be left alone
It's probably been said already, but as a fan of Wayward Pines, I recognize that they may have been inspired by the Legend 's alternate ending.
Can't really say this new version of humanity is "superior". I mean, I dunno about you, but I like not being at risk of burning up into a crisp for twelve hours a day.
I'm enjoying your review and must admit, your quirky way pleasantly reminds me of a very young Joan Cusack.
+ Maven of the Eventide Also, I think I'm hearing a screenwriter or filmmaker from your review. I can't help wondering... are you one or both?
Honestly I wasn't really big on the movie in general. The lesson here is that corporate suits don't understand what metaphors are unless they have to do with money.
best scene in this mobie is when he throws the eggs at the wall.
In the "Man" scene, was that nostalgia critic??
The original ending was perfect
I haven't seen any of the movies, but I am Legend being one of my favorite books, reading about the plot enrages me.
You know, imho, zombie is a catch-all for any corporeal undead. Includes skeletons, vampires, and so on.
Then there’s ghost which is the catchall for incorporeal undead: poltergeists, banshees, willowisps, trapped spirits, etc
It's just easier that way. 😅

Do you own the graphic novel version of Richard Matheson I Am Legend
Humans don't like to be called ignorant and stupid...
Even if they are
My brother's nikname became Samantha because he cried his eyes out when the dog died
...was that...Doug Walker at 13:10 ? It was wasn't it.
Of course it was! Who else?
Weren't the critters in I Am Legend nocturnal? Don't recall them going into detail on them, but that makes them more Vampire than Zombie.
In the book they are called vampires, hate garlic, and are deterred by crosses and mirrors at least as far as we learn.
They couldn't go out into sunlight like vampires. Sometimes zombies *seem* nocturnal but it's just because they are more dangerous at night when we can't see them... and because it's scarier for the audience.
The scrapped ending seems better I remember seeing this at the movies and I went in not knowing what it was about I almost cried when his dog died 🙁
Almost? 😭
That is the far better ending.
Will smith moments is my favourite month ever! His my boy.

Have you reviewed daybreakers???
Yes! ua-cam.com/video/nluqgSzKYsY/v-deo.html
So I’m new to the channel so idk if you have already touched on it but, you gotta check out Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo.
The main character's name even hints at how the vampires see him. Robert N(evil)le.
I can't believe they changed that ending!!!!!
I loved the movie before, but now it has so much more meaning!! It was so great!
What a shame
Sci-fi vampires makes me think of sci-fi ghosts therefore I Am Legend = Ghostbusters
The dog 😭😭😭
well done RIP Robert Neville
The alternative ending makes more sense , personally I'd never compare Smith to Price completely different personas and charismatic as well
But I don't remember those children at all and the others coming for the captured female.. I could have sworn that was the version of the movie I've seen.. maybe some countries aired that version?
I see your point but I AM LEGEND's "vampires" are very different from Romero's zombies in execution
They're closer to the modern infected than classical zombies
I’ve always thought of them as vampires.
Is it bad that I didn't even know the Darkseekers were supposed to be vampires until I Googled this movie a few years ago? I just thought they were mutant humans and dogs, simply mutated by the virus with a bad reaction to sunlight.
Why have deer when you can have Sbarro?
That sounds like a Welcome to Night Vale commercial tagline
Love this show!
I watched this movie once. I never will again. And that's not due to a lack of quality or entertainment on the movie's part. It's because of the damn dog.
Ikr?! 😭
How does this make a vampire video and you are talking about zombies?
Didn't watch her explanation early on did you?
9:42 oh Arnold has the range for this, for sure. You'd like End of Days.
Satanists instead of vampires, but there's plenty of occult goodies and blood. 😉
Nickolas cage ok I want to see that

Rahm Odin Holy shit that's a damn good quote o_o
i agree with everything you said
Was that Lindsey
Yeah this was recorded during the time that the site was called guy with the glasses and lindsey was still the nostalgia chick
I always thought I am legend was full of ghouls
Why were they cgi?
Yes I think I love you
So zombies are basically a sub species of vampire??? Huh, thats interesting...
Seem to me, that by be her statements, that according to history, that zombies, are vampires. At least according to history.
loved your review sub/thumbs up👏👌
Sometimes i prefer a movie with a dark ending, it makes it more realistic, its an ending youd love to hate cuz life isnt all sunshine and rainbows, shit happens. You love that its realistic but you hate that HAD to go that way.
I think this movie was one of Will Smith's best performance...unfortunately ever since I got my pupper Wolf (who is a German Shepherd) I can no longer watch this movie!
Marley!!!!! 😭😭😭
2.34 mins in: me too sis
Will Smith is pretty great in I Am Legend.
Far out I preferred the alternate ending
15:13, I like this ending much better. Too bad the test screening audience are a bunch of Michael Bay rip offs.
Rip offs? I don't think that is want you meant to say.
The fresh last man on Bel-air
i like your face and other bits ofd you too!
Man dog which ones
Her beweebs?
The 1971 and the 2007 versions mostly stink. The Vincent Price version is a decent adaptation. Now the book is EXCELLENT.
I still love Last Man on earth. It was the better adaptation of the book.
I like to call the monsters in this movie Zampires.
New York :)
I guess its because the virus in this version was manmade thats why it wasnt really meant to be but a mistake to be rectified.. I wonder if they stuck with the books real origin of the virus and ending..btw kinda reminds me of the girl with all the gifts
In this movie, the "virus" is actually a side effect of a cure for cancer. So, I don't think it has anything in common with previous versions.
Well this age poorly. Honestly great work
lmao love this
Was that Lindsay Ellis??
I like the alternate ending better, it gives the story more meaning. The ending they went with was cheap.
Michael Marple But to expect humans to just accept they're date and just roll over amd die is kind of dumb
Michael Marple Well that's a good point however he just found out that there are survivors and an entire town of them
Fake Name Yeah but wouldn't some big dumb "Humans vs Monsters" sequel or continuation of the story kinda go against the intelligent idea behind the original ending? I mean we just went "NOOOOO VAMPIRES ARE PEEEEOPLE!" in our collective mind it wouldn't make sense for Neville to choose the path of Johnny Rico, a brainwashed murderous monstrous tool of a fascist state in "Starship Troopers", and say "The only good vamp is a dead vamp!". That being said, I still love that book and movie and it deals with a lot of the same themes as "I am Legend".
There's also a truly POS version called I AM OMEGA. I can't even get through it.
Will Smith is weird, like ten percent of the time he can be really hot, but the other 90 percent of the time he just looks like a doofus.
They shulda used Gilbert Godfrey.
Adam
Holy shit is that Lindsay Ellis?
maven: seriously ease up on the eye makeup
Simpson style makeup shotgun?
