I want someone try and tell _me_ that it's just nostalgia... I watched them for the first time a month ago, as someone who never even got into comics as a kid and who wasn't even alive when the first film came out, and these films already mean _so_ much to me for reasons I'm not sure I can fully describe here. It was such an enjoyable time, the themes could get unexpectedly profound, and even the technical aspects just have so much heart put into them that they've aged more gracefully than a lot of modern things. I'm having to resist the urge to rewatch them all on one go to see what I missed on my first viewing.

The first Raimi Spider-Man movie has the earliest memory I have of the character. This was around 2002-2003 (I was 4-5) when the movie came on DVD, and I saw my dad watching the scene where Peter grabs the bus banner and rips it off. I asked him what he was watching and he just said "Spider-Man." It made me think of a man who turns into an actual spider, which scared me off from the character. Spider-Man 2 would then show me what Spider-Man actually looks like.

Whichever one is “Definitive” I think this has the best argument for being close to what Stan Lee had in mind. He’s not a “cool” nerd like in the Amazing films or relying on money and tech like in the MCU. I feel like there are aspects those versions do better, but if I’m looking solely at how they handled Peter Parker, Raimi and McGuire did it best

    • @marvelfannumber1
      @marvelfannumber1 2 роки тому +8

I think that's almost the point though. I think the other versions of Spider-Man on film have deliberately chosen to deviate a bit from the source material by comparison because...well you kind of have to after the 2002 film, that movie just got it so right that you'd almost have to either make a complete remake of that film or a shot-by-shot version of the comics to do something that captures the feel of the comics in an equal manner.
Which version I prefer aside, I understand why the later reboots went in different directions, it's very hard to do something more comic book accurate when they've pretty much already done it, unlike Batman for example who has never really had a live-action adaptation that truly captures the essence of the comics.

    • @undeadbatman9762
      @undeadbatman9762 2 роки тому +7

I disagree, Tobey’s Peter wasn’t as nerdy or even “techy” like the original. If anything Andrew’s Spider-Man and Peter stayed true to Stan Lee’s interpretation better than Tom and Tobey.
I originally believed what you believed in (the cool part lesser) but I did see a video all about that and it changed my mind. If you want I can give you a link to it.

Please check out 'Implicitly Pretentious'. His videos on Spiderman are some of the most thorough and comprehensive video analyses on the character and his various interpretations in film. Raimi's Spiderman movies are some of the best, but his interpretation deviates from Stan Lee's original take by quite a bit. That's not a bad thing by any means, and they are great superhero movies, but McGuire's Peter is pretty different from Stan's Peter. Part of that is because Tobey doesn't stay in high school for long at all, while in the comics he was for the whole original run, and so he was much more troubled, immature, angry, and petty just like a real life teenager who gets bullied would be. His growth is much more drawn out.
Also, Raimi is the reason the world's collective memory associates the origin of spiderman with Uncle Ben and his famous quote, when in reality Uncle Ben was not a highly relevant figure until much later on, and the responsibility line wasn't his. It was just a narration text bubble said by no one in particular, or just Stan himself.
This is not meant to be combative or gate-keepey, but just a sincere recommendation to check out that channel and his videos on Spiderman in particular. He does great work and I've learned so much from him.

I prefer just reading those comics (assuming I hadn't already read them several times over) instead of watching someone else tell me whether they're accurate or not.
A lot of what you mentioned by the way is not added in later adaptations (aside from the attitude, which Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man has more of), and for good reason. A comic book is 20-or-so pages and comes out monthly, a film is just 1.5-2.5 hours and has to stand on its own.
Even in the later comics (even before 2002) a lot of this stuff was cut or retconned, because most of it was just filler, or not fully developed.
Also, Peter wasn't in High School for "all of the original run". He graduates in #31 and Ditko did not leave until #39 (and Stan Lee would still be writing until #100), so the original comics only had Peter in High School for 3 years, which in comic titme isn't really all that long.

Sam Raimi’s: Spider Man is such a wonderful classic of the past much like Kingdom Hearts 1 and Sly Raccoon 1 (both games of which turning 20 this year as well) they’re all simplistic stories with amazing and wonderful character development, not jumping the gun on so many concepts and just creating a timeless memory that can be irreplaceable. Without Spider Man, I probably would’ve never gotten into superheroes or movies at all. This was amongst one of the first films I ever saw as a kid and I continue to hold SM1 as my absolute favourite next to SM2, much like my love for Sonic 1 next to Sonic 2 (not too big of a fan of 3 sadly). This film, while not the best in its genre, or even in its series holds a very special place in my heart. This is pretty much the go-to superhero origin movie for me, it does what many other films have later tried to do and manages to create the gold standard. This film was really unique at the time because it actually tried to stick true to the comics (in essence anyway) and was the first comic book film to not feel ashamed of being a comic book movie, embracing the camp and charm of those stories in such a genuine and heartfelt manner. The fact that they, for instance, had the balls to pull Spider-Man's costume straight out of the comics in an era where all superhero costumes had to be covered in black leather to not be considered "too silly" is something I still think this movie doesn't get enough credit for.
Another great aspect of this film not mentioned in the video is the pacing. This movie has a rock-solid pacing, there's never really a dull moment. Every scene is cut to be just the length it needs to be, and while this is an origin story, the origin gets concluded early enough that you still don't feel unsatisfied with the superhero action.

I’d argue that Richard Donner’s Superman and Tim Burton’s Batman were also pretty comic booky for their time. Just take a look at Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor and Terrence Stamp’s Zod and tell me you couldn’t also picture them being in these films.

      @@chrisdelgado4621
Donner's Superman film I agree with 100%. But that film still had a (small) element of cynicism with Lois' character, and it didn't really start a proper superhero movie craze the way Spider-Man did where everyone wanted to emulate its success.
Batman 89 and especially Batman Returns I don't think are comic booky at all. They're Tim Burton films, and like every film he makes, it's a Burton film before it is anything else. The Batman in those films isn't really the Batman from the comics, and it's obvious Tim Burton has only read like...two or three Batman comics in his entire life, he isn't a lifelong fan of the character like Sam Raimi is. His costume is also just black leather, not as bad as X-Men, but it's obvious they thought the comic book costume would be too silly (which was a philosophy Spider-Man completely rejected)
When I think of definitive comic book adaptations that aren't ashamed of being what they are, Burton's Batman films don't really come to mind. In fact I don't think any (live action) Batman film does honestly, we'll see how The Batman fares.

You know i'm something of a new Spiderman fan myself
I was introduced with the Amazing movies, enjoy the Home ones and recently watched for the first time The Spectacular series, it was a masterpiece
Definitely need to watch the Sam Reimi trilogy, they would always be on TV when i was a kid, i was born in 2001 after all but i never watched them from beggining to end, guess now it's the time

My first introduction to Spider-Man was Captain America: Civil War! Of course I knew the general story of Spider-Man, as it’s imbedded in pop-culture at this point, but I never watched any of the other movies. My brother used to watch the Sam Raimi trilogy all the time, but I’m blind and he wouldn’t tell me what was going on so I would get bored and walk away. I was seven and he was four at the time, so I didn’t really expect a four-year-old to describe a movie to me. My first introduction to everything that’s not in the MCU was actually No Way Home! I hate admitting that because I feel kind of ashamed, but I’m all caught up now! I watched the Sam Raimi trilogy and the amazing Spider-Man after I saw No Way Home! Of course I didn’t get the little references to all the rest of the movies, but I still really loved it! I’ve seen it five times in the theater so far! Green goblin was my favorite villain in that movie, so I was very excited to find out he was the villain in the very first Spider-Man movie! I actually cried when he died. The audience in my theater for No Way Home got so excited when he showed up, so based on their reaction I thought he would be in the entire trilogy! I mean on one hand he was, which was awesome by the way! I love how Harry would look at the mirror and you would just here that spine chilling voice!

Raimiverse may not be the 100% definitive take on Spider-Man in my opinion (Spectacular comes closest), but it doesn't change the fact that the first film was all it took to get me completely hooked onto Spidey. I've loved it all since I was just a little baby idiot, having nabbed the DVD and deciding to just watch it for fun - and I still watch it often now, at my old ass age of 21.
Without Raimi, I may not have gotten to experience such an integral part of my childhood. These films were not perfect, nothing is. But they're made with love throughout, and even the parts that were just jammed in - like Venom - worked out pretty well in my book.
Easily the best Spidey films out there.

I love how the movie portays the dichotomy between hero and villain by paralleling Peter and Norman's transformations, and gives you such a satisfying answer to WHY one becomes a hero and the other a villain.
And the answer (as cheesy as it sounds, but damn is it sincere) is that it comes down to family.
Peter's parental figures were always there to guide him down the right path because of how they raised him. Norman, to contrast, has a distant relation to his son and no guiding force to push him towards doing good. Everything he does is self serving, while everything Peter does becomes selfless due to the influence of Uncle Ben.

As in it was the first time I've seen Spiderman have Organic webbing
And how they used Practical effects was an amazing way of doing it
And I'm amazed how the actors actually had a part in a lot of it
And how Peter yells at Uncle Ben put me into the Ultimate comics way
And the acting was well done

Another good observation about Spider-Man is that his “species” is usually hated and feared by many, spiders are not loved by many people yet here one is, being a beloved hero! Puts into perspective that no matter how many people may shun you for how different you are there’s always someone out there that genuinely sees something great in you ❤️

I grew up with reading all the Spidey comics, watching the 1977 TV shows of Spidey, all the video games and in 2002 Spiderman came to the big screen and I had waited 20 years for this movie. Due to circumstances I was not able to see it in theaters but when I saw the movie man..I had that same feeling with the first Superman and Batman and X-men movies. Superhero movies were a BIG thing back in the day. Nowadays the movies and TV shows are spit out every year. The super hero movies are now over saturated imo.. But back to film..Tobey really impressed me with his portrayal of Spiderman. He will always be Thé first Spiderman in my book like Sean Connery will always be James Bond. When Andrey Garfield took over I was impressed as well. I think he was treated unfairly and he was also a great Spiderman. I hope Sony is making plans to have Andrew return as Spiderman in a new solo movie after No way home. He deserves to play in another Spidey Movie.
