And that is the difference between a family friendly movie and a kids movie. A kids movie is to shut up your kid for 90 minutes and nothing else. A family movie stays at the kids level of understanding, sometimes a little bit above for their own good, but still has real effort in trying to express important ideas.
slashandbones13 Exactly! Which is why "The Land Before Time" (the original) is better than its sequels. Or compared to Disney's forgettable CGI "Dinosaur".
I think I'd probably give my right arm for a Maven review of the 2011 revival of Young Dracula. It was insanely dark and nuanced for a children's show, and it had maybe my favourite portrayal of a vampire family ever.
Disney Channel's Halloween and Christmas lineups tend to feature a lot of movies that weren't made by Disney but that they own the syndication rights for, like the first two Harry Potter movies (but none of the others I guess?)
I'll admit that it's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but I don't remember Tony becoming a bully himself. Yes, he bullies the bullies, but that's just to make them stop bullying him and others. It's far far better than violence, and clearly talking to an authority figure is out, so there's really nothing left. If a bully is afraid of you, they stop bullying you. It's not as if being nice to them works. Seeing as most kids are nice to them to try and get them not to hurt them, that should have stopped the bullying more quickly. I only see this as a problem if he goes too far. Otherwise it smacks of "You've got to be perfect, even while people are emotionally and physically harming you." No, you don't. Fight the oppressors.
It actually seems to me like your takeaway from this that victims should not fight back against their oppressors. That there's something moral about just staying the victims. That's not what I see in the movie at all. Vampires aren't being oppressed by all humans. That's why it's wrong to attack them. But they do all go after specific oppressors, both Tony's bullies and the guy who wants to kill all vampires. I totally agree with the idea that you shouldn't have to change to be normal. That is in the text of the movie, and I do agree that is wrong. But that is what the solution of not fighting back requires. If you don't fight back, you must conform. That's the problem. You should fight back. Just you should do so proportionately.
ZipplyZane thank you! I'm actually happy someone sticks up for defending yourself against the bullies (not in a violent way, but still) In a world full of that mlp:FiM or SU 'friendship is magic' bull (seriously in the former they are now reforming real evil villians left and right), we need more people like you
@@ZipplyZane Exactly! I was bullied and a victim of domestic violence as a child. Being nice doesn't help at all, adults would never believe me, and I couldn't be violent lest it get even worse or I end up in juvenile hall. Standing firm and protecting myself was all I could do.
HOOOOOOOO MY GOODNESS, that is one ADORABLE vampire baby! xD This was so much fun! I'm so glad I was reminded your channel exists. I intended to check your vids out ages ago, after binging on a bunch of old Nostalgia Chick episodes, but somehow got lost on the way. BUT I'VE FOUND YOU AGAIN, and I'm so glad this channel is still lively! :D Onward to Binge!
Great review and a very fair analysis. I acknowledge this film has problems and contradictions but I still have a soft spot for it. It was one of the first vampire-related things I remember watching so it helped foster the love I have for them now. Your fledgling spawn is precious, has grown so much and seems to be quite perceptive. You should be proud!
I loved this movie, mainly because I had a large crush on the vampire father, and because I loved their beautiful old costumes. But yeah, now that Maven mentions it, the fact that they dress like that makes no sense at all. It's sadly one of those films that doesn't hold up when you watch it as an adult.
Saw the movie when I was a teenager after I had watched many dozens of adult vampire films - I was watching Lost Boys since I was five. Yeah. Not terribly sheltered. And my parents blamed ME for not ging into what the other kids were. LOL. STILL loved this movie for the quirky flawed charmer it is... and *Sigh* RICHARD E. FRIGGEN GRANT, Y'ALL!!!! And of course the mommy from Sleepwalkers aka queen borg. Alice Kreig.
As I kid I really liked the scene with the flying cows. Because, well, they are flying cows. It´s hilarious. But I was not really aware that it was actually based on a German book series. I know about the series but didn´t think it originated in Germany but was translated because the movie looks pretty American, like Maven said.
Oh my goodness, I haven't seen this film in so long...it must have been a really long time, because all I remember about it is the amulet and the sister seeming much older! I also had a big crush on her. I thought it was such a deep and dramatic movie when I was little, so despite the rude awakening I still have a lot of nostalgia for it.
I remember being a kid and immediately being pissed off when they said that the vampires wanted to be human. Like, you have the luxury of being a vampire and you throw it away!?! I would’ve KILLED to become a vampire!
I wonder if the kid who played Gregory was a Shakespearean actor before playing this role. He's brilliant! As a full grown vampire actress, I appreciate how Shakespeare he was.
Growing up in Germany, I loved those books. they were amazing, and the audio drama they had was great too. The stories were funny, interesting and taught you about friendship and acceptance. I was so excited when the movie came out, and it was such a crushing disappointment. Especially also as so few children media plays in Germany. I also think the old-fashioned clothing is explained really well in the books, as the reason they can fly has something to do with the cloaks, not being a vampire, and they are the clothes they died in, they don't change them.
I was working at a movie theater when this was out (either when it came out, or as it was being phased out, I forget which), but one thing that sticks out in my memory is that of all the kids movies we had during my time there, The Little Vampire screenings were by a *WIDE* margin the least messy. Seriously, I had to clean up after Pokemon the Movie 2000 screenings; 30 kids could easily make more mess than 900 adults.
I actually saw this movie in theaters when I was six, but I had completely forgotten about it until I saw your review in my feed. And while I don't recall it being very good, it's significant to me becasue I remember going to see it with my best friend at the time and her family. She and her family were the first people I met who were from a different country, and they didn't always have the easiest time of it becasue of that. We both liked the film after watching it, and in retrospect, it's interesting how the themes of the film directly touched the nature of our relationship, however simplified and schmaltzy they were. Anyway, great video as always! I can't believe how big your son has gotten!
As for things with little in the title and regarding vampires, I think the best is the comic The little Vampir (the petit vampir). It's a child-friendly version of the adult comic of the same author, vampir (which is kind of soft, kind but neurotic nosferatu). I think the children's version it's going to have a movie this year or at least, so I have heard.
Any plans to cover the new Little Vampire 3D? It features Rasmus Hardiker from Scream Street, meaning he may be fated to voice every smarmy young vampire in children's media for a while.
Your videos make me so happy! I was wondering yesterday when a new video of you would come up and it being about The little Vampire made me jump of excitement! Your little fledgling is so cute too!
I rewatched this movie recently and I was completely shocked by how his parents acted. Tony comes home from school with injuries after a kid beat him up and he mentions something about vampires to his mom and she says something along the lines of “No wonder you get bullied.” Wow. Mom of the century, ladies and gentlemen.
A counterpoint about the cows: A lot of dairy cows are about as dumb as the grass they eat, and these vampires target them rather than humans. Yes, they've caused farm blight, but they've done that because in their mind, causing farm blight whose only initial victims are not sentient is better than targeting sentient people. They're trying to be decent people and trying to be ethical and not harm others. Granted, they can only limit the damage rather than solve the issue completely, but doesn't that have some ethical value?
It would have been better if they killed the cows after because more vampire creatures would increase their food problem. And I don’t know if we could eat those cows anymore.
I remember watching the movie when I was young and honestly thought, and was disappointed, when Tony and Rudolf don't hold hands or hug to show that they've gotten together as a very young couple.
I actually read some of the books as a kid and I remember liking them quite a bit. I had pretty much forgotten about them till now. It makes me glad to see you reference this series.
Your son is such a cute adorable child. I wonder if he will carry on your work of the vampire lore on youtube. I hope he does, I think he would make an excellent host reviewing vampire lore on youtube when he is a young adult.
Holy shit! I'm a casual viewer, just got reminded about your channel by my suggestions, and oh my god your son grew up so fast! *avoiding Twilight joke avoiding Twilight joke * Happy I found my way back!
I'd like to think that the Vampire Hunter is so against the vampires becoming human because what is he - a man who has dedicated his life to hunting down vampires - without vampires to hunt? He could probably go hunt werewolves or gill men or something but "same profession, radically different animal" (so to speak).
Teaching your fledgling to be biased against werewolves? For shame! Great review as always, I had no idea they're making a new CGI version of Little Vampire either!
Ok, that was the most adorable Vampire Rewiew ever. As a german and having grown up with the Little Vampire books, I liked ths movie as a kid. I was initially dissapointed with how little it actually had to do with the source material but as an eight year old I dug the dramatic backstory (I think there was a tragic lovestory in there as well even though you didn't mention it?) and really liked the costume design of the Vampires. As for Anna being inexplicably infatuated with the little human boy (he was called Anton in the books, I think), that is one of the few things they actually did take straight from the souce material. I was in a Little Vampire musical/school play in primary school and was initially supposed to play Anna and had to act all infatuated. There even was a song I had to sing to him. Then I got demoted to playing the evil Vampire aunt (I forgot her name) last second, after doing all the rehersals, because the teacher didn't like me. She gave the role to my best friend instead and I was known as the evil vampire aunt to the whole school from that point on. Somehow I feel like Maven would have probably embraced that rep! XD I was pretty devastated though...:P
I can justify the vampire's look here. The youngest of them is several hundred years old. They've probably seen thousands of years of good fashion and bad fashion. "They probably want to forget the 80s". In that time, they've had plenty of time to find a look that they like the most. And they decided that their favorite look is "Tim Burton watched the Rupocolypse Now challenge of Rupaul's Drag Race". And I can justify the kid wearing clothing from the 1500s. I'm only 23, yet I own clothing that looks like something out of the 70s.
Call me an idiotic sap. I was, at youngest, in HS when I first saw this film... and although it's got it's stupid problems do to its audience... I LOVE IT. My son likes it sometimes too. lmao. BTW - Richard E. GRANT, people!!!!!! Jack Sweard in the Gary Oldman version of Dracula playing the vampire dad. I LOVE that man.
4:10 I got to stop you right there. Fighting back against a bully dose not make you a bully giving a bully a taste of there own medicine dose not make you the bully it's fucking Justice I'm so sick of people pulling this BS about fighting back making you just as bad it doesn't and sometimes like I cases like this you do t have an option but to fight back. This idea that getting back any a bully or fighting back against a bully makes you a bully is straight up victim blaming and it needs to fucking stop as it only encourages bullying to continue.
Awwwwww, Gray has grown up so much! You have to show him these videos when he's a teenager and film his reaction. XD I remember this movie from when I was a kid, and remember thinking it was okay, but JUST okay. Loved your analysis, though!
Thanks for showing us the little bundle of joy that is your son, man he has grown. Hope he had fun with his vampire mummy, I meant Mother not bandaged corpse.
I think it was more Alice Krige's aura that her character being a vampire. She is just plain mesmerizing. I never really understood this movie, I only watched it for Alice. Amazingly she provides the voice for the same character in the 3D animated version.
I wouldn't call him becoming a bully at that point. I'd just call it justified revenge that will likely give PTSD to evil and abusive upper class. Revenge can be healthy. Sometimes forgiveness needs to be considered a form of poor decision making.
I'm from Germany and this movie was my childhood. I used to dress up as the vampire every Halloween and refused to wear anything else. this movie was the beginning of my vampire obsession
Your son is getting so cute as he's growing up. I remember seeing the commercial on a promo vhs tape while working at Toys R Us. It looked corny, but the movie itself was not too bad.
mrowzer best friends and iko iko by angela via and aaron carter these tracks are available on cd if you owned them, includes vengaboys, baha men, a-teens, ace young and more.
I always thought this was a Disney Channel movie, like Mom's Got A Date With A Vampire. Right now is the first time I actually realize what the amulet was for, I guess I never paid attention when I was a kid, and I always was confused at the end because I didn't get what the amulet did.
I remember seeing this movie once, and I know that Jonathan Lipnicki and Anna Popplewell acted... but I always wondered if one of the girls (with brown hair and a black T-shirt) who cheered on Nigel and Flint beat up the poor Tony, it was the same actress who played Matilda Wormwood. Will it be her?
She was always my fave but then again I was 16-17 during the first three seasons. I did like s5. My problem was it didn't feel like the final series. It seemed Vlad took his position as the chosen one far more seriously in season 3-4 and it all just washed away.
Laurel Dearing I was the same age as Vald so but rewatching the early ones now I'm like "Ingrid how could we hate you" Yes the mum and how he was actually human was stupid when he spent years accepting his vampire side
I loved this movie so much as a child! (also it was how I discovered like three bands, because that's how my brain is wired) Going back to it I still really like it, but I didn't pick up on the "vampire as victim" theme until you discussed it, because it doesn't *feel* like this movie traffics in that idea, despite paying it lip service (lots of lip service). I think Gregory was everyone's favorite of the younger vampire characters, he had that whole "I need my father's approval" thing going on which was cool and they could've done a lot more with that considering the whole family was turned in the late 1600s (or earlier) and Gregory as eldest son would be his father's heir and there would be all this pressure on him because of it. Coupled with three hundred years of puberty and living in hiding, suddenly he makes a lot of sense. Tho some days I feel like I put more thought into movies like this than the people behind them. (Except in this case maybe whomever costumed Gregory and the actors for the vampires, because that whole family is so extra, it's delightful. Good old-fashioned theatrical BS.)
Ahhh no way, how have I not come across your channel before? I really liked your cameos in Nostalgia Chick and after all this time, I never knew you did videos of your own lol And Vampire themed as well? Oh yeah
Will you be looking at the Canadian adaptation, German adaptation, or the German book series? It might be interesting to look at how the book interacts with modern German culture, as opposed to earlier vampire stories and how they're tied to their respective cultures.
Honestly, I always had the biggest crush on Gregory. I was a simple child. I liked my boys undead and angry.
Also, that's a cute fledgling.
I loved Rudolph but behind it all, my dirty little secret was that Gregory was babe.
really? i always had a crush on the rudolph’s father, that deep voice was very attractive lol.
omg meeeee
Same here I also had a huge crush on Gregory too
Baby Gray is so cuteeee. And he's gotten so big! I remember him as teeny tiny from the Pumpkctoberfest videos.
Yes, that's Elisa's baby son. He likes to co-host her show sometimes :)
his name is grey
Your son is adorable!! So cute to add him to the series!!
I find it interesting that the vampire's sense of fashion gets remarkably worse after they turn human. Not subtle, but interesting
Nate Watson lol, they kept fucking up the girl’s hair
And that is the difference between a family friendly movie and a kids movie. A kids movie is to shut up your kid for 90 minutes and nothing else. A family movie stays at the kids level of understanding, sometimes a little bit above for their own good, but still has real effort in trying to express important ideas.
slashandbones13 Exactly! Which is why "The Land Before Time" (the original) is better than its sequels. Or compared to Disney's forgettable CGI "Dinosaur".
A family friendly movie is technically any movie below an M rating (R and PG13 for you Americans.) Kids' movies are heinously lazy though.
Isn't that little blonde girl Anna Poppowel (I think that's her name anyway), who played Susan in the newer Narnia movies?
"Newer" ha like 10 years ago now
Oh god I'm so old
Wow, I didn't realised that! She's really in a lot of movies (and tv shows) where she wears period clothing!
Her younger sister (Lulu) also played Alan Rickman's character's daughter in Love Actually
/trivia :P
Rewatching this review in 10 years will be wierd for this child.
I think I'd probably give my right arm for a Maven review of the 2011 revival of Young Dracula. It was insanely dark and nuanced for a children's show, and it had maybe my favourite portrayal of a vampire family ever.
Oh parenting, you are doing it right!
This wasn't a TV movie? I always thought it was a disney channel original. I only ever saw it on the disney channel growing up.
GravestoneXD It wasn't a Disney movie either?! I wonder why the Disney channel always ran it in October, then.
GravestoneXD huh. Same.
Disney Channel's Halloween and Christmas lineups tend to feature a lot of movies that weren't made by Disney but that they own the syndication rights for, like the first two Harry Potter movies (but none of the others I guess?)
a lot of movies of the time where much more concerned with home video and cable TV then boffo box office
I think the rest of the Harry Potter films were considered too edgy for the Disney Channel, plus that's a lot of movies to buy.
A new Vampire-Spawn! The Minion shall rise and shine in the pale moonlight!
DamemitHut Watch the episode on Count von Count from Sesame Street. It was his debut
Scott Sandler Will do, thanks ^^
Still can't get over the fact two reviewers from Channel Awesome have an actual kid together.

YES! SOOOO glad to see you back,Maven! :D
This review ripped this movie from the deep depths of my memory
I really enjoyed this movie, I finally watched it in full, I gotta say that this movie was an interesting take on vampire mythology
Awwwwww, Gray has grown up so much! You have to show him these videos when he's a teenager and film his reaction. XD
I remember this movie from when I was a kid, and remember thinking it was okay, but JUST okay. Loved your analysis, though!
YOUR BABY IS SO PRECIOUS OH GOD MY HEART!
Honestly as a kid watching this movie I was more concerned with thinking the older brother vampire was cute
Thanks for showing us the little bundle of joy that is your son, man he has grown. Hope he had fun with his vampire mummy, I meant Mother not bandaged corpse.
Hey that Gregory kid had a sweet Iron Maiden T shirt, that's high fashion to me
Oh Maven your boy is already that old, he's adorable :D
I wonder if Baby Gray likes the new animated movie?
Awe!!!! Your fledgling spawn is so freaking cute!!!!!
Maven seems to be a awesome Mom 😆. look at the smile on that lil dhampir
Oh my gosh, that was adorable! Very great idea for this video!
What was the song at the end of the video at 13:24?
I tried typing in the lyrics, but no match. I'm going batty! HELP!!
It's the theme song to the 1985 TV show version of Little Vampire: ua-cam.com/video/rDNP1LRcO3g/v-deo.html
Your son is getting so cute as he's growing up. I remember seeing the commercial on a promo vhs tape while working at Toys R Us. It looked corny, but the movie itself was not too bad.
What's the background song? Thanks
mrowzer best friends and iko iko by angela via and aaron carter these tracks are available on cd if you owned them, includes vengaboys, baha men, a-teens, ace young and more.
Aw! Elisa's boy looks just like his Mom!
That little baby is precious ^^!
This review was perfect. It has everything! Grey is growing up so fast! He's so cute.
how did you get Paw to go along with that get-up?
I always thought this was a Disney Channel movie, like Mom's Got A Date With A Vampire.
Right now is the first time I actually realize what the amulet was for, I guess I never paid attention when I was a kid, and I always was confused at the end because I didn't get what the amulet did.
how is the song called at the beginning? the one from Interview with a vampire
+Franziska Adam Lestat's Recitative!
Maven of the Eventide thank you😚 i'm in love with your videos😍
D'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw he wants to be realistic and specifies he's actually a lil'vampire
He's growing up so fast
I saw your review for this movie previously :) Its one of my other favorite Vampire movies :)
yay!! I've been waiting for you to cover this movie
Aah! A full head of hair!
I had to watch this movie in grade school. The only thing I remember was the vampire cow.
Can you compare to the animated remake on Netflix?
Demon Cows?...didn't I see that in a Howard the Duck comic?
darkservantofheaven I saw it in a Deadpool Crossover thingy. I think it was like Deadpool Teamup #2 or something like that, it was so weird.
Aw please please please watch and review young Dracula. It's all up on UA-cam and has a kids bafta award
I think you'd be surprised about a lot of kids tv in uk.
Yes know s5 is rubbish
Odd how as a kid everyone's hated Ingrid and then when it came back and everyone was a teenager we loved her :D
Know she's probably have to do 5 videos one of each series as it's quite packed
She was always my fave but then again I was 16-17 during the first three seasons. I did like s5. My problem was it didn't feel like the final series. It seemed Vlad took his position as the chosen one far more seriously in season 3-4 and it all just washed away.
Laurel Dearing I was the same age as Vald so but rewatching the early ones now I'm like
"Ingrid how could we hate you"
Yes the mum and how he was actually human was stupid when he spent years accepting his vampire side
I loved this movie so much as a child! (also it was how I discovered like three bands, because that's how my brain is wired)
Going back to it I still really like it, but I didn't pick up on the "vampire as victim" theme until you discussed it, because it doesn't *feel* like this movie traffics in that idea, despite paying it lip service (lots of lip service).
Oh yeah
Any chance of you reviewing Vampire's Kiss.
Your fledgling spawn will grow accustomed to the taste of blood if you mix it in with everything he eats.
That boy is going to grow up to be literally the most awesome human being ever.
Being very german I grew up with the books and TV series. Nice to see you mentioning them. :)
Will you be looking at the Canadian adaptation, German adaptation, or the German book series? It might be interesting to look at how the book interacts with modern German culture, as opposed to earlier vampire stories and how they're tied to their respective cultures.
a couple of suggestions you to review, Shadow of the vampire ( 2000 ) and Near dark ( 1987 )
What do you guys think about the new “The Little Vampire (2017)”?
