A vampire film that pokes fun at the tropes and with endearing characters? We had to wait two years for What We Do in the Shadows then.

If Burton had made his Dark Shadows film ten years earlier, he'd have probably done it better. He's grown complacent in his age and success.

To be fair, some of it was the studio meddling with his film. I heard he stormed off the set at one point cause of some changes they made.

@Taylor Lemoine because it was either a few years to late for "edgy broody vampire sex lords" or a few years to early for "binge culture campy movies" it's a solid B movie that almost doubled it's budget in box office, so it wasn't a flop. in fact one of the biggest reasons it did as poorly as it did was probably that it went toe to toe with the avengers movie.
if it had come out this year, it would be on netflix or hulu and become a cult classic, if it was put out in the early 00's it would have been a pillar of the sexy vampire revival, but coming out in the middle it was lost, and when it had to fight against one of the top grossing movies of all time, it'll always be remembered as not nearly as good as the avengers.

I spent this whole film wondering why I wasn't supposed to be on Eva Green's side. She pulled herself up from under class prejudice ! she was an entrepreneur who helped the town develop! and she had every right to be furious at Barnaby. decades worth!

Not really, he was open with her from the beginning with a relationship she initiated. Being in love with someone does not give you the right to own them, and stealing the businesses that an entire family spent their lives and fortunes to earn honestly with magic does not make you an entrepreneur, it makes you a theif.

True I love Angie to death but I see why she's the villain.
Well still shitty to use her as a hook up but at very least he was honest , he didn't love her. So just because you have sex with someone that automatically means your in a relationship? I seen this irl too. Frankly I think we as woman are taught that sex is more of a love thing rather than some physical. So that's how she's bitter and angry. She took that as love and nothing other than that. So she is trying to hold onto that for dear life . She is a Sevant girl and ig can't get better than a man of nobility. She took her anger out on his family rather than him. When that's just not right given his parents wouldn't have approved , but damn what's David's mother have to do with her love life? She's just targeting the whole family when I should be just him but nooo that'll hurt the chances of not loving her back for ig.
Damn her only downfall was being possessive , and pretty much like yandere . I can't speak for the original since I didn't watch it yet. He does have some remorse and care up to her death.

This is the video that made me subscribe. I am a huge Dark Shadows fan of the show, HOUSE and NIGHT of Dark Shadows, and was so disappointed by the 2012 movie. I really wanted to like it. You really did a wonderful review of the 2012 film and HODS. Always loved your reviews, but this is by far my favorite. Thank you for giving the show such great respect and relevance for today's audience!

I was so unbelievably excited when we heard Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter plus Dark shadows we got soooooooooooooo excited. We were so unbelievably disappointed. It's honestly really sac that it didn't end up being any better people don't ever consider watching any of the other versions after seeing this one. So glad to see so many people who enjoy the originals as much as my mom and I ☺️

If I were hired as a script doctor for this film I would have started similarly to the film in early America but made Barnabas Collins a ruthless business expert as a young man who slept with the witch servant Angelique after he was married to his beloved wife Josett. He regrets the extramarital affair and rebuffs Angelique resolving to be loyal to his wife. Angelique curses Barnabas to being a vampire which he actually adapts to fairly well using his powers of manipulation among other vampire abilities to further his family’s business ventures. (Although conflicted about killing he sticks to advantageous murders of business rivals, the homeless, and evildoers.) Angelique becomes enraged by the fact of how well he adapted to her curse so she tells Josett about the affair between her and Barnabas and the fact that he is in fact a murdering vampire. Josett carefully tests her theory with the family silver and it proves Angelique correct. In her horror of not only what her husband is but the fact that she’s benefitted from his vile deeds for years she tosses herself off the cliff. Barnabas is approached by Angelique and she still tries to seduce him. She explains that she told Josett about what he was and that she is the only person who could love him as he is. He rejects her and tries to hypnotize some poor unlucky girl into marrying him as a replacement Josett. This being the final straw for Angelique she tells the town what he is and what he’s doing and they attack him and seal him in a coffin in the family crypt on the Collins property.
Time skip to a more modern time (you could stick with the 70s or change it up) some construction workers are doing some work on the Collins property that was sold to developers. They accidentally bust open the old coffin in their work. He kills the construction workers and gains some knowledge of the modern age. He makes his way back to his family manor and sees what’s become of his once wealthy and powerful family.
He bonds immediately with Elizabeth Collins over their mutual shrewd Business skill. He claims to be a British Collins who heard of their hardships and wishes to restore their business and their family manor. He hypnotizes David’s father into being a stepford wife type perfect father for David because David reminds him of himself and his father is a terrible person. (As revealed by the fathers behavior at Barnabas’s welcoming party.)
once Barnabas starts hiring staff for the mansion he hypnotizes them into exemplary workers and to ignore any supernatural happenings in the mansion. He later tries to hypnotize Elizabeth’s rebellious daughter but it fails which confuses him.
Upon hiring a nanny for David he hires Victoria Winters. He also hires the female doctor (You can blend them in with his other hires) he falls in love with Victoria and attempts to make he a Josett copy but the Ghost of Josett becomes angry when he does. The doctor becomes infatuated with him.
He quickly realizes upon rebuilding his family business that the one causing his family’s misfortune is in fact Angelique. She tries to seduce him and when he refuses she expresses her joy in watching his family suffer.
David also realizes that Barnabas hypnotized his father somehow and feels like it’s wrong where Barnabas removes his hypnotism over his father and gives him the choice of being a good father to David or taking money and leaving. (Obviously the father leaves)
Infuriated by the newfound success of the Collins and the sudden drop in her own business Angelique decides to retaliate. She threatens that if Barnabas doesn’t stop what he’s doing or marry her she’s going to expose him to his family and possibly kill them and frame him.
The doctor knows what Barnabas is and loves him. Victoria and everyone else doesn’t know what he is but Victoria is beginning to fall for him. Barnabas and Victoria begin planning a wedding at the mansion. And in the doctors desperation she injects herself with Barnabas’ blood and when she reveals what she’s done he kills her because he feels betrayed and that she’s no better than Angelique. (Disposing of the body in the water)
Angelique and Barnabas’ feud devolves into an all out fight that he wins but not before she tells him she told Victoria what he is and is going to jump. He runs after Victoria and catches her before she can jump. She explains her reason for jumping and it plays out the exact same and they are married.

The recent movie was an infuriating watch for me. The tone clashed with the performances, which clashed with the writing. I felt like the overall movie was trying to be a somewhat-lighthearted romcom-type thing, but a lot of the scenes were played for the wrong kind of laughs - that is, dark, cynical jabs at Barnabas' inhumanity during lighter scenes, and badly done faux-archaic-values banter during what should have been serious spots. To make it worse, Depp played his role like he was in a middle-school Shakespearean play. The scene where he's in a circle discussing his problems with the hippies is a great example of what I mean. Barnabas talks candidly about his problems with love, asks what the hippies what can do, and mulls it over a bit. It's sort of sweet. Then he says something like, "You've been of great help. However, since you have heard my tale, I must now kill every one of you."
Admittedly, that made me laugh harder than anything in the movie the first time I watched. BUT THEN IT SHOWED HIM DO IT.
That was NOT necessary. Ending the scene on the hippies going, "Huh?" would have established that he went through with it, but also ended the scene with the general mood of the scene intact, and reinforced that Barnabas was a bastard. However, it goes on to show bloody dismemberment, confusing what the scene before was supposed to mean. Even on a third viewing, it didn't make sense with the comforting music during the talk-through. It's just emotionally muddled. And that's what the movie felt like to me. Muddled.
Also, you know what makes a semi-serious vampire comedrama even better? Popular 70's music! Of course!

My mother told me that when she was younger, she and her sisters would run home and turn on the tv, wait 10 minutes for it to turn on and they would watch Dark Shadows. They watched until this one very dramatic scene with Barnabus Collins, and the next day they went to go watch it and it was never on again. My mother has never gotten over that.

Great review...Saw the entire tv series when they announced the Depp movie and it was brilliant and freaking batshit crazy.. Burton & Depp & Pfeiffer said they were fans of the tv show when growing up and John August the original screenwriter said he wrote a dead serious Godfather like family drama. I have a theory of what happened.. I think Depp & Burton watched the Dark Shadows best of Barnabas greatest hits dvd..which if watched out of context is a badly acted really cheap and unintentionally campy thing..and were like was this what the show was like? Lets go with that. The show was brilliant because it was like a live play with mistakes and flubs etc which gave it in a weird sense a bit of realism and immediacy.

I'd either want one of two things from a new Dark Shadows adaption. Either be a continuation of the original going into what would have happened. Let it be something for the fans.
Or reboot it from episode one and focus on the pre Barnabas archs. I know that nobody will agree but I thought a lot of the stuff that came before was compelling. It be like Wentworth in the sense of a reimagining. It could be very good if done well. You can get to the Barnabas stuff but wait. Possibly include some of the randomly inserted characters from the latter part of the series. Have it be obvious that magic is around Collinsport but don't out right explore it. At least not right away.

Nice analysis--and to some extent this has been a problem with all the other remakes of DS. I enjoyed the Tim Burton movie, but then it struck a specific odd chord in me. After all I knew it was going to be a Tim Burton movie, and accepted that ahead of time. Plus I really loved the cast. Nevertheless, I agree me and folks just like me are way too small an audience. And even I would have preferred a less quirky, more genuinely dramatic version.

Oh, as much as Burton and Depp obviously enjoy working together, they've really been phoning it in, most of this last twenty years. Their _Dark Shadows_ adaptation is one of the prime examples of this, and for all the reasons you describe!
Hell, I'm one of the *very* few people I know who will defend _Mars Attacks!_ because, as it was the one following his very loving _Ed Wood_ biopic, I put two plus two, together, and saw MA!, as Burton intended it: a playful homage to not only Wood's films, but that whole 1950s/60s micro-genre of cheezy, low-budget sci-fi and horror films, with the cast comprising in no small part of the director's friends, and usually written and filmed over two weeks; be considering the popularity of MST3K in the 1990s, I'm sure it felt like a safe gamble. Of course, just cos I understand what he was doing doesn't mean that the film wasn't a huge, barely watchable mess, if only for the fact that it lacked _so much_ of what gives those old films their newfound kitschy charm: it's budget was comparatively MUCH bigger (even when adjusting for inflation), the cast was seemingly random and mostly comprised of people he'd never previously worked with (at least as a director), and the script just had this "intensely workshopped" feel to it, in spite of the huge-ass mess that it was, like Burton had someone stand out in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and poll the tourists about what they liked about... Well, the kinds of movies that ended up on MST3K, and then crammed as much as possible into the MA script.
This one was a mess for very similar reasons: it not only lacked what gave the original Dark Shadows media (up to and about 50% including the first revival of the TV series) its campy charm, but the script also felt like it was based on that hypothetical polling of tourists and what they liked about cheezy vampire media.
It's not simply like the difference between George Carlin and Andrew Dice Clay, but it's like the difference between the Carlin fans who see the often very glaring differences, and the Clay fans who think there's no significant difference because both men could swear like a pirate with Tourette's. He skimmed the surface of what made the original run of the series and the first film so engaging, and filled in the rest of the script with what feels like (and I am being _intensely_ charitable, here) a very broad send-up of the previous twenty years of pop culture vampires written by someone who isn't really a fan of that post-Buffy period of vampire media. The result is, as you said, dull and forgettable at its best times, and just unwatchable at its worst.

Depp actually has made some good movies...and he's a much better actor when he isn't in a Pirates movie or one directed by Burton Post-2000.

You know, everyone keeps saying it didn't get good until Barnabas showed up, but I adored the earlier arcs and his introduction marked the death of the mystery surrounding Victoria Winters... As well as Victoria Winters herself, of course there was nothing interesting about her after the new actress came in, kinda like what happened to Burke, new guy was so bad they killed him outright, of course they couldn't do that to Victoria had to write her the most annoying exit so you were just thankful she was gone.
Like don't get me wrong Barnabas is a cool character, and he has some neat arcs, but it's like everyone else took a hit to accommodate his presence, Carrol for instance loses all her character development through vampire bullshit, and then there's David who just instantly loses all the trust he spent so much time and effort earning, which was really difficult given his attempts at patricide.
Literally just the ending, that was where the movie failed, they could have and should have done more with the rest of the movie, but with what they had they could have pulled it together if they hadn't tried to shove all the things into the ending.

The main character was forced into becoming a vampire.

Honestly, I think this was more Depp's dream than Burton's. This came out the same year as the animated Frankenweenie which Burton was way more passionate about.

He passed at the age of 87 so he had a nice long life...i believe he was the very first sympathetic vampire...

And don't forget that Dark Shadows was redone as a series in 1991, with Ben Cross( of Chariots of Fire fame )as Barnabas Collins and Joanna Going (from Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp)as Victoria Winters: who acted as the narrator for the original show. It wasn't bad, but didn't really bring anything new to the show.

I finally saw the original movie and the 2012 parody, and just... wow. The original show and movie are at least fun for the melodramatic campiness of it all, but the movie... seemed to only want the names of the characters and setting, instead of paying true homage to it. It couldn't choose a plot, had inconsistencies about what amount of sunlight Barnabas could tolerate, brought werewolves out of nowhere, and had no real conclusion to the Victoria/Josette's storyline... What a waste.

So this movie was on tv last night and I ended up watching it and was so befuddled myself at the end of it. I was at a complete loss but this review helped explain some of the... odder choices made in this film. Definitely a weird one, no doubt about that. And can anyone explain to me Helena Bonham Carter’s character? I’m still a bit confused on that one, to be honest.

I know this is a year late, but considering Julia Hoffman is my personal favorite character from the original show, I hope I can help? I think her characterization from the 2012 movie where she says she's going to turn him human but is secretly just trying to turn herself into a vampire and he goes into a rage and kills her is taken from one of the Dark Shadows films (I want to say House of Dark Shadows, but I'm not 100% sure). It's not at all like her characterization in the show, where she is always genuine in her intentions to help Barnabas, becoming his closest friend and confidant and had the show continued, would have been the one Barnabas married, as Maven said. It was actually Grayson Hall's, Julia's actress, decision to play Julia as falling in love with Barnabas, so that's something that's also always been kind of part of her characterization. In the show, Julia is one of the best characters imo, incredibly clever and sensible and courageous and caring, at least as far as one can be in a campy soap, but I can understand the reasoning to make her more conniving in a film that's more horror focused anyway like HoDS. Unfortunately I have no fecking clue what the motivations were to write her the way they did in the 2012 film other than "women be afraid of getting old because women be vain about their looks". Apparently Grayson Hall's son was not at all thrilled by it, and yeah I think everyone was at a loss as to what the deal was. (Not to mention it adds to the already bizarre virgin whore framing the movie has going with Victoria vs Angelique and the "doctor patient confidentiality" is truly one of the worst things in any movie anywhere, especially when coupled with her ultimate fate like ffs why tho). So I guess to sum up, I think there's a solid outlining for the basic elements of her actions in the 2012 movie stemmed from but I honestly have no idea why anyone thought the specific handling of it the way they did made any sense ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You give Helena the lead, and this movie works great. Maybe America Chavez as a sexy nurse who's audience perspective? Like, she knows that this is all an excuse for a swanky goth party. And keep it fun. Like,Girl Barnabus kills a bunch of vampire hunters, but they would kill her. It's a self-defense theme. Black sparkle.

When I did my review. I liked it except for one thing. Of the supernaturals that can be done practically, Carolyn contracted the CGI for both the transformation and her werewolf form. The transformation gets a partial pass since she was on the ceiling, but the kept using it for the fight scene. Long hair, prostetic fangs and claws, and the stilts from the Underworld Lycan suits is cheaper than just having her in cg for the entire scene. I said if I can make my werewolf claws more realistic, then you got problems.
