Tesla FSD keeps giving me a false strike even tho my hands are on wheel. and sometimes when im looking at my passenger briefly. and couple times when the car hits a road dip especially before a bridge or tunnel. It's annoying and unreal.
I find it waste of money with tesla, if they charge $15K and still i dont own my car and features that come with. Tesla need to compensate for the unusable period. Else the community should have law suite to fix it.
I HAVE BEEN KICKED OUT MULTIPLE TIMES AND LOST FSD TRIAL FOR A WHEEL AFTER NEVER GETTING AUDIO PROMPTS. THE FIRST AUDIO PROMPTS IN THOSE CASES WERE NOT WARNINGS, BUT TO KICK ME OUT!!!
Yes!! I got one last week and I have no idea why! I was applying the pressure to the wheel and acknowledged every blue wave and it flashed red and then was told I got a strike
I got one this week as well for looking at the center screen. It seems if you get too many “pay attention to the road” warnings, even if you rectify and acknowledge it. If you accumulate too many it will be an instant strike.
Yeah, I agree I used to feed all the time but I was hit 3 times over many miles Also I'm paying attention to the road and I missed the blanking blue display and damn I'm jit with fed red steering wheel!!
I went out for two short rides and got two strikes. When the warning came up and said my hands were not on the wheel, I tried to hold tight but no help. I don’t know what kind of fancy algorithm Tesla engineers came up with. Or it is a problem with their steering wheel and need your iron grip . It is good I learned that you could push volume or command button to cancel the warning. I tried it and it worked and better trying to fight with the steering wheel. The 30 days trial gives an opportunity to see what the future may look like. I appreciate Elon for that but the problem here is irritating hell out of me, i won’t accept and pay for FSD like this.
It’s not about the grip but rather it’s registering the torque against your hand. So as the wheel gradually moves it should feel resistance against your hands
Thanks for the following: "push volume or command button to cancel the warning". I didn't know this and had to pull over to figure out how to cancel it!
Same issue. I’m super attentive and suddenly red wheel in the screen. Road is dead straight. This is my very first drive and my passenger playing with all the settings. Is that the reason on a 2018 model s ?
@rdanda What do you need to do with the steering wheel? Is it the grip on the steering wheel, the location where you grip the steering wheel (I have a disability and have to hold it around the 7pm location on long drives), or do you have to move the steering wheel slightly? In FSD, it is difficult to move the steering wheel, even slightly. Too much, and the car really jerks hard in that direction, and FSD turns off, which is much more dangerous.
Another thing I noticed is that it definitely does not like when you are in FSD and start using the touchscreen. It immediately thinks that you are distracted no matter how/why you were using the touchscreen (searching for an address, entering music title, etc). But to its credit, if the passenger interacts with the touchscreen, it seems be able to tell that it is not the driver.
I don’t like it that it penalizes you when you want type in something like a destination for navigation, or choose alternate routes, or check something in the menu to control. It thinks you are not paying attention but the screen’s position is not really in the best place to smoothly and accurately type correctly, or scroll around. Imagine being left handed too! So if you take too long typing in a destination, or searching for a contact, you may get kicked out! It’s so annoying.
For me, it was a safety issue. When driving we are supposed to have our eyes on the road at ALL times. However, Tesla makes the driver take his/her eyes off of the road to keep looking at the dash to see blinking light which notifies driver to place hands on yoke. Already i was almost in an accident when a car in the right lane came into my lane without looking to see if another car was present. Luckily, I was paying attention and was able to swerve out of the way. I WAS FOCUSED ON THE ROAD and not the panel on my Tesla X prompting me to place hands on wheel and got penalized 2x.
I find it's even worse now with the so called "hands free". I constantly have to look at the screen if hands free is activated and if the blue warning means look at the road or tug the wheel.
One thing I noticed is that you can override that steering wheel torque by rolling the volume wheel up and down and that move is treated the same as applying torque to the wheel.
Yes!! My first FSD drive, I got a strike, and I was totally paying attention! I didn't realize that the car would flash blue, and I never heard any audio warnings until the extra loud klaxon sound, and it turned FSD off. That scared the s$%t out of me, and I'm sure that I drove in a totally unsafe fashion for a few minutes because my adrenaline was topped out :) ! I have absolutely no idea what would have made it do this because I honestly was paying better attention than I do with FSD off! And yes, it happened on a straight away (highway), Honestly, I was much more inattentive earlier in the drive with FSD as I was trying to get Spotify going while driving (which one might do even without FSD). I paid $15,000 for FSD, and I DO understand why Tesla must do this, but I truly believe that the current method is not good nor safe, honestly. Oh, and then, a couple of days later, I was driving at the level below FSD (I forgot what it's called), and it gave me another strike. So, now, I have two strikes within about three days of buying the car! Again, I know the reasons that something like this is necessary, but Tesla should revisit the "how" they are doing it. If they use the camera and watch your face, they shouldn't give a strike just because you took your eyes off the road briefly or frequently. It is normal human behavior to occasionally glance at the person in the passenger or back seats. And, although Tesla has improved this more than other manufacturers, you still have to use the center display WHILE DRIVING in the course of any trip. Frustrating!

I leave my hand at the 9pm steering wheel position like most people When the car turns itself am I supposed to somewhat let go to not impede the turning or do I still need to apply pressure/weight while the car turns itself?
What I find works best is let the car make the turn itself without holding the wheel as if you try to hold on to it you’re most likely going to disengage AP. When you are going straight rest your hand on the wheel and the slight movement in the wheel will be enough register the torque.
