Personally I like the step vans more. The CDV feels awkward to me. In the step van you’re able to have both doors open for better visibility, you’re also higher up and it’s almost impossible to hit your head anywhere. That’s just my preference though.
Definitely a little awkward to get in/out. Yeah really the only big benefits I noticed was the turning radius. And the driver seat is more comfortable. But I still prefer the SV I think.
The Amazon distributor in Fairview Oregon, just east of Portland just got about 3 dozen Rivian vans, and they look much easier to access the drivers seat, and the door has better steps to get in and out. Over 100 packages per van, that is great!
Coming from the RAM ProMaster, you definitely notice the changes. I think that if you come from a Ford van it won’t be a much of a change (at least from the cabin) However, the height at which you are driving is a killer for me. I do miss having a radio but having the adaptive cruise control and line assist makes it worth it specially when on the highway and you have the Netradyne watching you. If only that seat wasn’t sitting so low… Ugh! I can’t get over that! I like the 360° view cameras, though I don’t like that it changes to show the particular side you’re trying to turn to when you got the blinkers on. The way the camera sits up there, for me that view doesn’t add much when you’re turning. Also, I feel like they should’ve added a bigger blinker on the sides of the van so people facing the van from afar can see the direction you’re trying to go (as in the turning signal from the front view is in the middle of the headlight and can’t be seen from the sides). Other than that, I like this van. Only thing I fear is having a significant increase on my route without a raise on my pay (since the DSP could just really use the argument that since I don’t need a DOT permit to drive it, a pay raise is not needed.) Great video, by the way! My respect for keeping a good attitude while delivering under the rain as I tend to get grumpy, lol.
Thanks for the comment man! Gah the radio! It’s not perfect, but I like it overall. I think the routes are sometimes larger, but we have cargo vans at my DSP doing the same routes. So I’d much rather take the bigger truck! And we’re used to the rain over here thankfully, not ideal but it’s bearable 🤷♂️ ☔️
I just got trained on this van yesterday, and I tell you what, bro, coming from the Mercedes Sprinter, I love this van. I was delivering 350 packages with 50 overflow in the little sprinter, having to take out overflow to get to bags. 😂 Great video, man.
First aid kit was right above the passenger seat. Secondly, the hand cart can be moved if you like.. those bungee cords are there just to stabilize it when you turn. It’s not permanently stationary there.
You inspired me to put out snacks and drinks for the delivery drivers this holiday season. It worked out great for a while. Until we kept getting delivery drivers going out of their way to take snacks and drinks from us and they weren’t delivering us anything. And these guys really helped themselves, leaving very little for the other delivery drivers who are actually delivering our packages! So unfortunately we’re taking it away for now.
Oh no! Sounds like word got out. Well if you’re ever up to try it again we really do appreciate it! Maybe if you only set stuff out on days you expect a delivery?
I was selected by my DSP to run the CDV, I’ve done the online training, but still have to do the 1 hour driving test. Not sure if it’s an Amazon thing or not. I did get to move one into the facility and load it, that 360 camera is amazing. The only thing I don’t like is that to mount the monitor for that system, the factory radio has to be removed, like you said.
I envy this. Since my whole strategy when delivering is to pre-sort several totes at a time, that extra layer of shelving would be awesome to have. I think the biggest advantage over a step van is that it's JUST light enough to be below the threshold of requiring a medical examiner's certificate. The step UP into the cargo area was unexpected. I could see that being an issue.
You’d like the Ram version! We just got a few at my DSP but I haven’t been able to drive one yet. The driver seat is actually high enough where you can slide right off your seat so I think it’ll be way more user-friendly.
Just got my CDV training complete but they’re still having us use the cargo vans indefinitely. But I do gotta admit it probably feels super nice to be able to walk through the van without hitting every tote with your legs lol
I think you should definitely put a few comparison videos about the Rivian and the van you’re in right now especially when you’re trying to go down that narrow Road
@@FridayAdventureClub got it. Be careful out there, that rain's showing no sign of letting up! Also, hope you get to try the Ram version at some point - many have noted that its seating position is quite a bit better.
Yeah I’d be in my training for the CVD is not hard just like Train in the drive though the cargo van easy Peezy lemon squeezy I like it because I got more space and I like the 360 camera but I do miss my tune so I’ll bring like a little speaker Or my AirPods
Ha Ha, way back in the 90's, during my college days, I delivered snacks for a local chip company in a long Grumman Step Van in Washington DC. I had back door deliveries and would drive down block long alleys with just a few inches, after I pulled in the mirrors, on either side. It was a 5 speed manual diesel...First gear was a creeping gear. Ha! I always used them all.
I don't like the position of the rear view because u have to look down, I like that extra screen the transits have. I only did my training haven't done a route in them yet since they haven't been delivered to our station
Those vans are better for a shorter person. I delivered with this vehicle a few weeks ago and I’m 6’2 and I had to put the tote in the middle because it was hard for me to get up and down
Another well done and entertaining vid. I seen one of these at my station, bbut I love my stepvan life. I'm curious to give this a spin those. That back spot light should be on the Step Vans also.
Way more space than even the largest cargo van. To go from 1 shelf on each side with only a 12 inch wide walkway to a double shelf front to back with over double the walkway would be nice. My dsp hasn't got to test the cdv yet and only 1 dsp at my station has and they seldom use it for actual routes its usually used as a rescue or sweeper vechicle
It’s a huge difference! Way easier to organize! Yeah we had a handful at my station then all of a sudden I think most DSPs got like 3-5 each. I’m sure you’ll get them soon!
Pros: More space in back area to organize totes and overflow. No more double, or triple stacking. Overhead buttons for sliding cargo door, dome lamp, and rear spotlight. Entire camera system itself more robust, and is way better than the ones found in the standard Sprinters/Pro Masters. More spacious overall. Cons: The low seating position is garbage. Absolute killer on the knees after awhile, getting up constantly to get to the cargo area. While it won’t happen to everyone, for some, give it time. You’re going to feel it after a few months, because of it. Due to there not being a dedicated passenger seat, it’s harder to organize an entire totes worth of packages in the cabin area, especially by driver aid. With the Pro Masters, I stack boxes on the passenger seat, and envelopes in the isle way, and passenger side floor in a specific order (ending in 10’s, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and so on). It’s nowhere near as doable in the CDV. Last but not least… NO RADIO! Who thought this was a good idea? Delivering throughout the day for 10+ hours, and not having something as simple as a basic radio to listen to, for that amount of time, is miserable. I actually feel like I move slower throughout the day by not having one. Personally, not worth it. I still prefer the Ram Pro Masters, at the end of the day. The “Fluid Truck” variants of the Pro Masters are really nice. They even have SirusXM radio built in.
I'm waiting to see how you did with the snow we have here in the area. I did a Flex block yesterday and nearly got my car stuck multiple times. A good test of the step van vs CDV vs cargo van might be how they handle in the snow
Step van is better, you're higher up off the ground, and I like the field of view better, and I like that the step van you can control all the lights and there's no alarm.
Think my DSP is getting one of these and here I am just barely getting DOT certified for the step van job lol That van does look like it will take some getting used to
since there’s no passenger seat to put the packages on , you can just them upfront on the dash , that’s what i do , i get the package even before i get to the location
I’m not sure! We still have both. My manager and I were talking, he thinks maybe Amazon will optimize certain routes for step vans and eventually maybe there will be step van only DSP’s. But who knows! Also DSP’s lease all the vans anyways, so maybe step vans will be dropped from the leasing program at some point!
They probably saw the actual cost of having to train 200k drivers for DOT and opt for this. I asked my manager once he said from what he knows step vans are here to stay. But we shall see. I know certain parts for step vans take weeks to get like the glass windows. Only one company in the nation makes them so it’s like a back log. Either way hope they have both
