For anyone interested to know how he's doing right now, he's doing ok and still working as a game developer silently. Recently in an interview at his former university, he stated the period when Flappy Bird got famous as "success has killed his chance to grow and to have a simple life". Not only the players that got angry at him at that time, but also the local newspapers are desperate to get views that they create bad image for him that people continuously ask him bunch of stupid questions and ruined his daily life. He now still remains as his chill lifestyle and personality, which doesn't involve much onto the public and more focus on his work. Currently he works with his team to develop a new game that he stated to be very unique, and request to keep it a secret until it get officially released. Also if you're curious about the money he make, he spent his money to help the young developers to create their games if they show him real passion and dedication to their game. Not in an investment way, but more as charity work. This guy literally too good for this world, I really hope he will eventually get the true admiration he deserved and live his life happily again.
Thanks for the update

The saddest part is everyone who harrassed Dong were never punished, and ironically they likely moved pass the whole thing like it was nothing.
Society just wasn't ready for that masterpiece of a game. Dong did the right thing for his own peace of mind. I wish him well.
Dong actually seems like a genuinely good person, but the pure negligence of a society trying to pin their own issues on someone else took a toll on him. Hope he found his own happiness now
I bet he lost faith in humanity and to be honest I don't blame him
Or in other words, Dong was naive and stupid. He blew his once in a lifetime opportunity.

For me, he actually showed how americans can be so selfish and insensitive that they can make a person's life miserable. Just remember that pewdiepie was reviewing the game in english. And most of those "reviews " were from american websites. People think you can simply drag others to the spotlight and nothing is going to happen. We are lucky that this story didn't end in death.

Clearly that’s a joke; but seriously, it is very much upsetting to see people from even my home country be so god damn arrogant to do shit like this. And I think paparazzi is one of the most terrible things you can do to anyone, people with money usually don’t initially start with bad intentions. In reality, the public and people that are so fucking brain dead that can’t get over their own issues are many reasons why the wealthy are randomly invited into high-class society like federal politics for no reason. I remember being in middle school when this game exploded, it was a trend amongst us to leave negative reviews on the App Store about how addicted we all were even though it was total BS. I’m confident that at least amongst this generation, all the hate was just a joke and we didn’t know it was actually tormenting Dong… I still feel bad all these years later
So you all find it funny to bully people. Especially about something they depend their livelihood on and probably spend weeks making it. So it's only a joke to ruin people's work. Got it
@@titaniumj9824 Obviously I don’t think that way now lol. I’m just saying what happened nearly a decade ago when I was in middle school and stupid. Growing up in a somewhat average income family in Vietnam, I didn't even know the full story until years later after the whole story ended. All I know about Dong up until I knew the truth was through the Newspaper and TV coverage about him (more specifically, about how addictive Flappy Bird is) (and yes, although I was around 10, a TV is the most modern thing I can touch in my house at that time, my dad did have an old Samsung phone but I wasn't allowed to use it, so no playing Flappy Bird or "news from the Internet" for me).
As a young and impressionable kid, I thought to myself "wow, this man is so malicious, he made people addicted to a game to gain millions from it". The news never talked about his life nor how the game was just a fun idea that he had and it didn't even succeed when it first release, only how addictive it was. Only in 2016 when I first got my own laptop (for studying purposes, mainly English) that I learn of the truth and this man's tragic story.
What did I learn from this? Never f**king trust everything at first sight, always listen to both sides of the story (which will NEVER happens through traditional medias)
And I hope Dong all the best in his future tho, may he appears in the public spotlight once again (with a lot less backlash and bad publicity this time, that man has went through a lot of bad situations that he didn't even deserve)
It disgusts me how our society reacted so negatively to something as innocent as a man creating a free game. Don't even get me started on how invasive paparazzi photographers are, they should all be ashamed of themselves. I'm glad Dong is trying to push forward and keep working in spite of this situation, good for him.
it's life, when you make something good there's will always be people out there who will make Fun by talking nonsense trolling you're works just to get lots of views
the only way tackle people like them is to never read the comment good or Bad, they always bring the worst in you, and ignore the haters, caused when you become a video game developer you don't just do it for them, you do it because you want to and it also your passion
that should have been the first basic thing he needs to know when he wants to developed a game
I have only had one viral video on youtube and i can tell you from experience that the moment video got 100k , Bullies got started , it got worst by every additional 100k , they called me names and ... ,(You can go and read them yourself if you want) , But guess what? That happens when you expose your self to the world, people with mental problems come and try to insult you , in order to feel empowered , you just have to learn to not care
They did not react negatively actually. They just reacted normally with the addition that flappy bird is inherently aggravating, and they just channeled that into their reactions. I think most people who said bad things about the game, or displaced their anger on the dev, never actually seriously meant those things. They just vented.
And he also took those comments way too seriously and sensitively. When he should have just recognized them as the average manifestation of attention.
Most people were joking. Others were just following the ironic outrage trend that Flappy Bird created. But he had no way of knowing, because he didn't live in America or speak English as a first language.
@@Gardor I get what you’re saying, but people taking out their frustrations on game developers is a whole problem in and of itself.

The problem is not the games addiction, is the people's behaviour and stupidity using addiction as an excuse to ruin someones career.
If people complains so much videogames are addictive then why the hell they don't ban the whole game industry in very beginning?
This developer should not give a dam what people says about his game and he should start flipping the middle finger to all of the parents telling " if my game is really a problem then why aren't you spending time with your child on weekends instead of working and consuming products like this?"

Always had a feeling this is what happened to flappy bird and it’s creator. I hope Dong has people in his life that let him know he is not to blame for people’s ignorance/rudeness online. From the information provided he seems like a good man who takes personal accountability for the addictiveness of phones/games because he contributed. I played this game when I was in high school, I'm not that fan of games so I didn't play it that much but I remember the people around me saying that the game is toxic, it's ruining people's lives, kids are fighting with each other and a rumor also said someone committed suicide because of it (I didn't pay attention to all of that because I'm usually just in the corner reading Wattpad lol!). Now that I think about it, people really love blaming other people for their failures

Flappy Bird didn't ruined his life. Immature videogame-playing manchildren and kids raised with bad parenting ruined his life.

At 2:35, there's a part about Đông not telling his parents about his success despite still living with them. I just wanna point out that in Việt Nam, we don't have the "culture" where when people reach a certain age of life, they have to move out. Rather, we have this choice to live with our parents, to take care of them in return for how they give birth and raise us until we're capable to live on ourselves. Usually in VN, people choose to move out because they prefer living alone, or they get married and wanna have a more private life (and avoid the conflict between their parents with their spouse too). And at some point, even though they move out they can invite their parents to come to live with them, especially when one of their parents passes away. So Đông living with his parents is normal and actually so nice of him.
I think Đông didn't wanna talk about his personal success because he's so humble. It's exactly what his professor in his old college tells about Đông, that he's humble and shy and sincere. And in 2019, he once shared that he didn't handle the pressure so well, one of the reasons urges him to delete Flappy Bird. IMO, by doing that, he also protected his family from the paparazzi because he's still living with his parents.
For context The creator was making loads of money around 40k a day. But he let The negativity and News story’s into his mind Making him believe he was a “bad guy” and then he shuts it down.😢
It is sad how some parts of society judge game creators for basically nothing wrong, even today. I hope he is doing alright now
I don't find a single point to blame him. He is a game developer. It's his job to develop a game! The main issue is us. If we are addicted on it. It's our fault. Did he tell you to play the game all day long like that?? Then why should he take responsibility of your mental health issue? I feel so sorry for this man.
It‘s sad that people don’t find joy in games… Sure, it gets frustrating at certain points but when that happens you have to tell yourself to stop. Games are meant to be fun, if you don’t enjoy them then it‘s either the game developer‘s fault for designing it wrong or your own (which is the case 99% of the time). Ironically, people really should learn how to give up when it comes to reward based games xD
@@meridoberman6740 Exactly man! You caught me on the last line.
@@meridoberman6740 Got a point there
Exactly!!!!!! Personal accountability is SEVERELY LACKING amongst most people.
Exactly. I can name plenty of reasons why almost every complaint made against this man holds no weight. For starters, people claiming his game was ripping off Mario just because of the similar scenery is stupid because it’s the only thing that they share in common. The gameplay isn’t even remotely similar and it’s hard to call something a ripoff if it isn’t blatantly copying something. Also it’s almost hypocritical to make complaints about a game being addictive especially nowadays. Do people want to go back to the age of pong consoles and Atari games? No? Then they need to appreciate when someone designs something simple but fun. I mentioned this recently that there’s a fine line between frustration and fun in games. If it’s too easy it’s boring, but if there’s just enough difficulty then it makes you want to keep playing. Imagine if there was little to no challenge in games like Super Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, or Castlevania. That’s also what made Halo one of the most popular games on the original Xbox. When it comes to any games, I pick hard and frustrating over easy and boring anytime
He did not deserve that whatsoever. He gets immensely trolled and bullied by so many people and sources, and then he gets threatened for deciding to remove the game. People are so revolting. America is SO full of hate and immaturity in so many different ways unimaginable, even for the most minor reasons like this. This game was completely free and it was just a simple little game and this is how he is treated for it? We always take advantage of the people that are actually nice and bring no harm whatsoever. It's no wonder we are in this pathetic state right now. I feel so sorry for him.
thats why i cant blame anyone for bombing them
As an american you are not wrong. For all these dumb protests out of nowhere while our forests are burning. But although, not all people in America are idiots. Some are open minded and also go against the idiots playing flappy bird for 8 hours strait. The people that are addicted just blame others.Common sense is not so common these days
What protests are you referring to?
And the *very* conservative mindset of Vietnamese bring even more shit into his live
@@canceledlook417 common sense is a malediction, because even with "common" on it, it's never was common. And you have to deal with those who didn't have it. And they are a big majority, and not only in america, it's everywhere.
It is like damaging someone or something with a knife and blaming on the knife and it's creator. The narcissism and idiocy of some people has no boundaries.
I’ve also heard some hoaxes that he killed himself just because of this game. People were sick for spreading misinformation.
People always blame the maker of something, even though its their own fault, honestly dude its sad that this guy made a simple cool game that blew up and all he got was back lash and hate for it when he didn't even do anything wrong

Hidetaka Miyazaki designed some of the hardest games I've ever played and received plenty of death threats. He embraced it though, and FromSoftware has adapted to its new meta of challenging and addicting games. Some people accept success differently.

Yeah, but on the other side, people need to be more aware of how they interact online. Not only that, but take PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY for their addictive behaviors, as well as those who enable them (parents with kids).
Same in Bangladesh. A lot of people don't understand
The way this affected him just shows how agreeable and well tempered he is.He seems like such a sweet kid even when he got really successful with the money he didn't forget about his friends. But people just lash out and blame others for their own shortcomings, it's stupid.
It is, and what makes it just foolish is that some of these people when they were kids were emulating anything that they were growing up in, and who knows what they picked that they thought was a good idea. Put a kid with a horrible upbringing and a poor learning and understanding in the world he or she lives in, combined with the usual school with its own set of problems, having little to no support from anybody and be stuck in your own ego making up whatever to justify any bad emotions, and you got a person who needs a lot of time and proper help to help with his self-awareness and slowly try to learn to live better.

It's YOUR responsibility when you have an addiction, not anybody elses. I feel so bad for him. He's a genuinely good person and he's beating himself up over a dumb pixel bird game because of people who can't just delete an APP, as if it's his fault. People are so nasty. You can never please everybody.
That's sad, even though he's under the shadows and not as known right now I hope he's doing okay. If someone's addicted to a game they need a therapist instead of blaming it on the creator of the game.

I remember this in middle school... Rumor for me was that some kid killed his younger sibling/friend over the game and that's why they were removing it
One of the things that most people tend to misinterpretate about addictions is that most of them are not produced because the product you are consuming has an evil substance that makes you unable to stop consuming but in most cases are produced to fulfill a void that they already have or to escape of some sensations they are already feeling and are unable to manage, so blaming the design of a video game for the addiction of the people is like blaming the owners of an abandoned building because people sell drugs next to them, so the addiction to video games is just a consequence of an inherent problem on the people, and therefore, the solution is not to restrict video games or make them less fun but to focus as a society on solve big problem with mental health that we have right now.

I was in college as a Computer Engineering student when this all went down. I had wanted to challenge myself to make an app for a while, and decided to make a clone. I made “Fatty Bird” from scratch, with hand drawn custom art work. Sure it was a stupid clone, but I was proud of it for my first app. I took it off the App Store when the ad revenue was no longer enough to pay the $99 annual developer fee. I still have screenshots of it if anyone is interested

I think the takeaway from this, is that people are dumb, and Dong is really empathetic toward others and how he thinks about his creation affecting other people.
Seriously, Dong is a gentle soul. If it was me, i would already tell people to drop dead, if they sent me hate messages. Every breath of air i take without their permission raises my self esteem.
Other people trying to blame other for their own problem disgust me.
i almost broke my phone playing flappy bird, but never did i thought of blaming the creator.
the number of times i raged about the game is also equal to the enjoyment it brought me
Dong sounds like a really heartfelt and compassionate guy. And so of course the world sought only to tear him down. They hated him for creating the game. They hated him for unproven allegations that could have been made up by anyone. And when he ultimately decided to pull it off the market because all of this convinced him that it was the right thing to do,they hated him for THAT too. All while death threats were being made here and there towards the poor guy. There are a lot of lessons about human nature to be learned here. Most of which do not cast a favorable light upon people on the whole.
Oof, that hit hard dude
I’m just so disgusted that some people act in this way.. so disappointing.
I remember playing this as a kid and it was addicting.. but I never blamed anyone 🤨
