let's remind ourselves that in the first Angry Birds movie, there was a copyright-free version of Never gonna give you up, meaning that anyone who watched the movie has been rickrolled.
No matter how Angry Birds has gone downhill, I will always remember the times between 2009 and 2016 (that was the year when Seasons ended) as being one of the most popular games on mobile and computer.☺️
I remember early 2010s when plants vs zombies, angry birds and pocket tank deluxe were popular. Afterwards everyone started making mobile gaming and added ads in them

Bad piggies 2 is in a weird state right now. I think it got canceled this year but nothing no new news. Rovio might still be working on it but I don’t know
@@Someguy-ze7kp Nah, we have no news about bad piggies 2, it can be either that they are developing bad piggies 2 very slowly or they just recanceled it without telling it to the ab community so they wouldn't be mad.

@@BriFiConnections you missed what they’re saying, the point is that the animation team _didn’t_ simply slap on a z axis. look at the movie compared to the games, the characters aren’t just 3d versions of themselves they’re new designs that are _based_ on the 2d characters
Idk what my first game was, but my dad always downloaded games on his phone and they always went onto my tablet, and angry birds was the first downloaded so probably angry birds
Angry Birds is so unbelievably nostalgic. Wish it could make a HUGE comeback in modern times like this; imagine everyone talking about and playing an Angry Birds game(s) in 2023. Wild.
Angry Birds Epic shocked me as a kid. It was... it was just so good, like holy hell, it had double the amount of content than most angry birds game s I had played combined. It took me as much time as it did to beat Angry Birds Star Wars w DLC than to reach the midpoint of Epic, and I still haven't finished it. I'm really disappointed that it never got the sales it deserved.
I remember thinking when angry birds came out how sad it is that kids are obsessed with a terrible game and no longer go outside alone from age 7 to 18, staying out till night abd making friends double or three times our age, instead of sitting home watching a screen like your generation. Yuck what a pathetic, sad generation
I really do miss this series. Going into more recent games during 2018 basically made me realise that all those whimsical memories and fantasies of fun I had were basically gone. And seriously, if Rovio wants to say to their fans that they're trying to make things better for them, best to just do it, since actions always speak louder than words.
You forgot to mention how they massacred angry birds go afterwards. It probably was my favorite game in series and what is happening to it now just makes me want to cry.
@@eliahaj2233, now you have to collect (or buy for real money) cars. Previously there were 4 locations and you had to use certain cars on each. Now you have to own all types of cars for each location... You better try it yourself. I'm just furious qbout it.
@@speedentron I stopped playing a while ago when they first introduced the energy bar which limited the playing time in one go significantly, not sure how long ago that was though
It sucks that the power of a movie got to their head and they thought it would be better to remove everything. Angry birds epic was by far one of the best games i ever played
This was the first game my grandpa ever got into and he was the one who introduced me to it in 2011 when I was 5 or 6 years old with the original on his old, tiny, outdated phone. I've played every single game since then, I genuinely grew up with this franchise. I really hope it can come back someday.
This is not the only occurrence of a major mobile game being abandoned. The same happened to infinity blade, which was probably my favourite mobile game. I just wish that if companies want to abandon the maintenance of their games, they simply make the code and assets open source so that it community can maintain it.
@@dav1d9 infinity blade had three games and was made by epic (creators of Fortnite) and yes recently I think they added the infinity blade from the game series.
The only reason why I wanted to buy iPhone, sad it's discontinued and now I wish there is a rip-off version on android. It would be much better than having none at all.
I was searching for angry birds Rio and seasons a few months ago on play store but i couldn't find them and that really surprised me as they were highly popular game when i was a teenager. Now i got to know what really happened. Ravio should have never deleted their classic games, they were so fun to all age groups😔

It's strange I was looking for angry birds epic which wasn't available on my new phone but I went to previously downloaded games and I managed to get it on my new phone
I still miss Angry Birds Seasons man Seeing that show up made me sad because it was my first angry birds aside from the OG and AB Rio. It was and still is by far my favorite too
The Duolingo Crossover is insane Also the first time I found Angry Birds was through the Bomb Survival Levels in Little Big Planet Also Ari Pulkinnen is an amazing composer and he worked on Super Stardust, Resogun, Dead Nation with banging tracks.
It’s so sad that this iconic game got abandoned. A lot of the sequels (which are probably gone from the App Store by now) like Angry Birds Epic and Angry Birds Go were totally awesome.
Do you guys remember some other amazing games published by Rovio that no one cared about? Y'know games like Retry, Amazing Alex, and especially Tiny Thief! The latter was so good that Nintendo even published it on Wii U in Japan! Too bad all of these games are forgotten, among probably many others!
I ALWAYS wished they made a squeal to tiny thief, the gameplay was so simple but beautiful and the art was awesome too. So glad to see yall remember it
As someone who never really played Angry Birds, but played TONS of Crush the Castle 2, I have to say that you've undersold the series. Crush the Castle 2, though utilizing the same engine as the first game, has 16 different projectiles. And though many people weren't too bothered about the similarities between Crush the Castle and Angry Birds, the developers of Crush the Castle were. The Crush the Castle 2 Players Pack contains the "Irritated Fowl", a chicken with a redraw of Red's face that you only get once beating the game, where the Redvonian king refers to them as a plague and asks you to be rid of them. The chickens are the worst weapon in the game.
crush the castle was 10x better than angry birds, just not as sellable as angry birds because it has realistic world models and characters and was not cartoonish and sfw, like, for kids and younger teenagers which always makes more money nowadays... not to mention the fact that it was originally a flash game on a format from the old days which doesn't translate well to mobile devices and their small screens and its aging fanbase (and that was years ago; now flash game fans are in their mid to late 20s and 30s...)
@@cabezadepija7318 damn u right.. i didnt realized im almost mid 20s now. I remembered browsing a lot of flash games back then; so much excitement over low graphics. I was about to complain about the age range but yeah ur basically right. Only kids that are now under 20s are just anti mainstream kids; or theyre just broke
@@martinsitepu7659 i think that the best platform now for simple, fresh new games is steam with all of the small (usually free to play) titles it releases that resemble flash games because they're usually developed by just one or a few people and with a college student budget so they rely on simple fun gameplay and ideas... hopefully those kids will do some research and find out about these games instead of playing that fortnite or overwatch crap or those extremely sfw repetitive mobile games or even gta online which has been boring and dried up because of the milking for like over 5 years now
You mentioned the part where Rovio was a publisher, and the first thing I thought of was Rovio Stars. They published Fathom Interactive's Sky Punks, an "endless" runner-game with a world and characters with depth and richness I haven't seen from a game like it. It's been long discontinued but i'm still hoping for a return to the game by Rovio.
I wasn't an Angry Birds Epic kid. There, I said it. Playing it back then was too complicated for me, since I was a dumb kid. I wish I could play it today so that I would know why everyone loves it so much. Unfortunately, that may not ever be possible, unless there's a fan remake or until Rovio finally re-releases it.

Edit: hello everyone, yiu saw my comment on angry birds epic and how its new community should be talked about. Well I edited the comment to tell everyone how to download Epic and apparently youtube just deleted my comment. I think because I used the word "wire us" which I was talking about an apk scanning website called "WireusTotal" I so hate youtube.... I will paste my other comment way below down. Angry Birds Epic was genuinely the best angry birds game ever. I'm sad it's discontinued, it was such a masterpiece. And wanna know why Rovio removed the arena, events and replaced the daily calender with just snoutlings in Angry Birds Epic? They admitted that apparently, if you had all the class upgrades, and opened a class upgrade chest, the game would give this black screen which softlocks you. Now the thing is this problem was there since 2020. So the thing is, they had 2 YEARS to fix this and yet, someone fixed this in less than a week using the help of game guardian. I don't know much about coding, but I do know it shouldn't take 2 years to fix a simple bug. Rovio could've replaced the class upgrade chest with some other chest instead, it shouldn't take that much time Speaking of Angry Birds Epic, the ABE community has really grown. From beating the game with no hacks in its current state without soending a single penny, to finding game breaking and benefiting glitches, and having events and arena back, including playing as the pigs. The community has ironically grown more after Epic's discontinuation. I would really love to see you talk about it now, you can ask me for all the things this community has accomplished so far.
What makes me excited for angry birds now is that they are starting to bring back the old games. Just letting you all know that the classic game that started it all is back on the app store but it costs 99 cents! It's worth it though, because there are no ads, no in app purchases, and everything has stayed the same. They are planning to add even more, I think starting with angry birds space.
ok, making angry birds classic one dollar is one thing, but if they dare touch my angry birds star wars, me and the entirety of finland is gonna have some problems
At the height of Angry Birds mania in Finland (the home country of AB), their brand was everywhere. My regular supermarket had AB posters, AB pens, AB backpacks, AB soda, AB shirts, AB birthday cake decorations etc. There was much more AB merchandise than all Disney+Nintendo merch combined. Angry Birds was so ubiquitous that I heard of a a kid whose first words were Angry Birds. Nothing in her native Finnish language, but a crude "anp perts"
I remember eating Angry Birds yoghurt when I was in Finland many years ago. I don't remember much from my time in Finland (I've only been there a few times) except the fact that I loved eating Angry Birds yoghurt. Sadly I don't think it's around anymore.
I remember seeing people wearing Angry Bird T-shirts pretty often back in 2010-2011. Amazing how popular a little mobile game can become, even if only for a short while.
Go (way before the modern update) and epic were my favourite out of the angry birds series but the original has a close meaning to me because it was one of the first games I have ever played.
I REMEMBER NOW Go was my favorite of the series and then as time went on and I got new devices I randomly remembered angry birds go. So I download it and its completely changed and i stopped playing it after like a week
@@unl3ash3d95 i had 110% completed the game before that massive update, and when it did update, ALL of my progress vanished I was like 8-10 and i got upset. i tried to beat it but the new energy system just made it enjoyable for me. I much prefer the old mechanic where each character had 5 energies or "cupcakes" at some point. man i miss the older angry birds titles... another good one was angry birds star wars but just like the video said, licencing issues.
I wonder: "What would Rovio look like now in an alternate universe where there 2015 games (Go and Epic) got almost a big as a success as the OG Angry birds" or "What if Rovio just made a new game with a new IP that got very popular and the game was actually good" But unless we have the technology to warp to other timelines, the world may never know
Its still is for the fans, people still play the games that were delisted many people never deleted the games and even downloaded them when they first announced they would be removing them, for other lets just say they found some other means to play them 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I still remember , when i was a kid me and my friends were so hyped about angry birds star wars and we were like let's see who finishes it first or who was at higher level, literally every kid in my society loved angry birds star wars at that time. Rovio was a nostalgia let's see what happens next for them.
Not only should they bring back 2012 they should bring back ab star wars. Who cares about the licensing If they can steal data they can most certainty call disney I feel like one of the reasons no one likes the newer stuff is because there wasn't something basic to accompany it with
Another thing i noticed is they kept the games unlisted on android due to android devices having way better compatibility, while iOS had them completely unavailable outside of Zimbabwe due to iOS not supporting many older versions of apps.
Back in 2019, I had to delete Angrybirds from my phone due to lack of space. When I cleared out pictures off of my phone, I went to redownload Angrybirds. When I discovered that it was gone, I broke down crying.
Honestly as a child, bad piggies was so cool to 8 year old me. The idea that you play as the villain and have them as the main focus was so cool to me back then.
Red’s First Flight doesn’t have all the worlds, like the one where Bomb gets a shockwave ability, the candy one with Bubbles, and they removed by absolute favorite, Red’s Mighty Feathers. Rest in Peace, RMF. You will be greatly missed.
Angry birds has always been an important series to my childhood. My mom actually used to work in the same building as the Rovio HQ we even held my little sisters Birthday party at the Venue the building had. The HQ building had this Huge Gift Shop. and i remember getting this Huge encyclopedia book of what (at the time) was the entire series. and just a Plushie of chuck. The book is currently on my shelf. and the Chuck plush is currently serving as my 2 year old little sisters Favorite Pillow.
Angry Birds has been a really big part of my childhood, as it was literally the first online game i have ever played, and it's sad seeing Rovio capitalize on the franchise, there were some older games that weren't in the traditional style, but atleast they tried being creative with Go and Epic, when i play Angry Birds, i don't want to play a bubble shooter, i don't want to play match three, i want to see avians destroying buildings and killing suines, after the dumpster fire Rovio became, i appreciate them putting the original games back up again *also the movie art style sucks, give me my round birds back*
I really hate the fact that Rovio gave them arms and legs. Like, what was the point? I don't understand. The Toons series worked very well without the limbs and could've been easily translated to a film.
4:30 the amount of nostalgia this game gives me oh my lord, I literally forgot this game existed before this part of the video, ah man, I loved playing this game so fucking much😭
How cut the rope died: Growing up players: Thanks for the fun Cut the rope: so long partner How PVZ died Popcap: now what? How angry birds died: ROVIO: time to remove our games from the store
One thing I think got left out: Angry Birds Fight, which was a partnership between Rovio and Kiteretsu. It was a competitive match 3 puzzle RPG launched in 2015, but ended service in 2017. It had a similar theme to Angry Birds Epic. It was honestly a pretty good spinoff despite it being an always-online game.
There's also AB Stella that got forgotten because it's a 32-bit game that was axed when ios 11 rolled out. I think it was the first game to introduce Stella and her friends on the island even before the Stella cartoons. I'm still in regret that I never used 200 in-game coins to activate Gale for once when the game was still available.
I thought this video was most excellent! I remember downloading ALL the Angry Bird games on my Mom's phone during this time period. I wish Rovio would put those games like Star Wars, Space, Rio, etc back on the Play Store. I don't think license is the issue, as you said they are don't want to maintain old games anymore which is quite sad. But I thought this video essay was most informative! Great work!
I really like the use of the 60 Seconds! "Wasteland" OST Track for the "uh oh" segment. It's actually a really good track to illustrate a dramatic downfall.
4:43 i remeber beating the secret hard ghost pig boss but my brothers who went for school didn't believe me,like 5 years later they realized that i actually beat him which is why the eagle food's are like empty.
For me it was the number of ads and the "pay to win" aspect of the later games. The first two games were great with minimal ads and you could not just pay more to win a level.
What killed the angry birds franchise was Rovio completely changing what Angry Birds was. In the “golden age” angry birds, yes, there were some changes to the formula like angry birds epic and transformers, but they still felt and played very much still like angry birds. Once the angry birds movie came out, all the games made were either candy crush ripoffs or baby looking versions of the original game
Yep. Also the games are just unplayable nowadays. I remember back when Angry Birds was still relatively new. There were barely any ads and they were NOT intrusive or distracting, and the game was genuinely fun and exciting. Then mobile gaming degenerated into barely playable pieces of garbage that spammed ads all the time and crammed them everywhere. Rovio probaly saw how successful and profitable that strategy was and now here we are.
im pretty sure there was something along the lines of that the designers made pigs look silly and one guy decided to show off these strange images of bird stats and some circular birds being next to a wall of bricks and stuff so they just kinda combined that with some other stuff and the game was made
Angry Birds Star Wars was the backbone of childhood video games for me. Luckily, I can still redownload both 1 and 2 since the App Store has a page for previously downloaded games. Oh and don’t get me started on the masterpiece that is Angry Birds Epic. I remember my naive kiddo self trying to convince Rovio that ABSW 3 was a great idea and that they should make BB-Egg or some crap like that. It hurts to see my childhood crash and burn bro.
Rovio is just another example of what happens when someone falls to the sin of greed, you never focus on making money, making money is not eveeything, quality is above
Angry Birds epic is the backbone of my childhood. I had soooo much fun with it. It absolutely shattered my heart the moment I found out that the game was removed.
I think the only reason they hadn't re-listed rio and star wars specifically, is probably because of partnership that they made and it might've expired but yeah, it's kind of a sad sight to see with the angry birds series so far, besides bad piggies and alike.
I got my first smartphone in 2013 and from that on I always had some of the Angry Birds games installed and played them quite often. What killed it for me, in the end, was that at some point you just couldn't play the original game as it originally was. The games were "modernized" with micro transactions and a copious amount of ads that would put even modern day UA-cam to shame. At that point they were basically unplayable, and after a brief period of trying to work through the frustration and just play them as they were, I stopped caring and moved on.
Angry Birds Star Wars was me and my brother's favorite game because we used to be big star wars fans. I spend a lot of fond times with him wasting hours just on Angry Birds Star Wars, Go, and Bad Piggies. I wish that when they re-release Star Wars, they add the old ones back and god forbid they only bring back the sequels.
Rovio killed the franchise, as far as I know too little people were actually playing the new games, so instead of making the newer games more interesting, they decided to delete the old games
That angry birds puzzle shooter used to be focused on the Stella characters before the rest of the angry birds cast was added. Oh, there was also a spin off with Stella as the protagonist with a new group of birds and another bird as the antagonist that came before it.
I was in tears when i noticed the OG angry birds back on the app store. Bought it immediately. Now all we need is seasons and the cartoons they released within the app itself, those where hilarious😂
A huge factor in Angry Birds' decline that I'm surprised this video didn't mention was Rovio's increasingly annoying and downright greedy monetization scheme. When Angry Birds was first released, it had no monetization outside of the initial price of the game and even then, it was free on Android. And this followed for the first few games in the series. It was extremely fun and refreshing to get whole games with hundreds of levels with no annoying microtransaction. For those reasons, Angry Birds stand out against its mobile game contemporaries. Angry Birds did have some pop up ads but they were never intrusive, they would just occasionally show up in the corner of the screen and never obscured interrupted gameplay. But then, bit by bit, Rovio began introducing more and more microtransactions into the game. It started with the Mighty Eagle ability which was harmless but it ballooned into other special abilities and constant pop-up prompts to use those abilities. You want from being able to endlessly restart a level you were having trouble with to being interrupted by these prompts encouraging you to use power-ups you have to pay for. It sounds like a small thing, but having these pop-up constantly interrupt your gameplay made Angry Birds much less enjoyable than it used to be. And as Angry Birds branched out into different spinoffs, they increasingly introduced even more microstransactions. Take Angry Birds Star Wars which was a good game but one that constantly incentivized you to spend real money to buy better birds beat the levels. Rovio even released physical toys that had QR codes which could be used in the game in a toys-to-life system similar to Skylanders. I never played it, but I believe Rovio had similar monetization methods in their Transformers and and racing spin-offs. And then we have Angry Birds Epic which is a phenomenal game, it really is amazing. But it also introduced an in-game currency and loot box system which *heavily* incentivized you to pay real money to buy more loot boxes so you could get better gear. It was exhausting to play without spending any money because you had to grind so hard to get look boxes without spending real money and even then, odds were slim that you'd get anything really useful in those loot boxes. It was also exhausting to resist the temptation to spend real money, and game developers know this, that's they they are constantly tantalizing you with epic gear that is only a 5 dollar purchase away. And then we have the breaking point: Angry Birds 2. Angry Birds 2 amped up monetization to the max by introducing a life system as well have having numerous pop-ups. I didn't even bother trying to play Angry Birds 2 since I knew I would have no fun and I could see that a great game franchise had been ruined by greed. I'm sure that all these increasingly blatant monetization schemes turned off a lot of fans as the series continued. It because more and more frustrating to play these game and the constant barrage of purchasable power-ups sucked all the fun out of the game. We all have different tolerance levels for how much nonsense we are willing to put up with in our game and as Rovio added more and more monetization schemes, they turned off more and more people from Angry Birds as that tolerate threshold was passed. I'm sure that many of things you mentioned above contributed to Angry Birds' decline. The new spin-off games, removing the games from the App Store, more competition, even just people moving one. But I promise you, the absurd monetization Rovio foolishly implemented was certainly a contributing factor as well. We went from a game with no in-game purchases and microscopic ads to a game hounded by game interrupting pop-ups, unwanted microtransactions, loot boxes, and a life system. They took a solid franchise and ruined it with their greed. And suffice to say, players like me were not having it which is why we stopped playing.
What I didn’t like, even before the Angry Birds Movie was that Angry Birds 2 had a life system. If you failed at a level 5 times in one day, then you game overed, and couldn’t get those lives back until the next day, unless you had the money to cheat your way through with more lives. That kind of defeated the purpose of the simpler, trial and error gameplay of Angry Birds. If you suck so much at a level that you die lose times on it, then the only option (without draining your wallet) is to just wait until the next day. That’s just really unfair game design, and it really makes you lose your motivation to play. I can’t be the only person who feels this way.
Rovio removing all of those games was not the play in my opinion. I like Angry Birds 2 and Bad Piggies fine, but I really miss the older ones. Anyway, amazing job T3rr0r!
Ah this game, I remember downloading it and scrolling to the far right of the level selection page just to see if there were hidden eggs. That and the little series they had. And lastly, never completing angry birds epic.

When i was younger and watched it first time i was looking for hours for the name of the game...
I miss that game soooo much
@Keaton Richards too bad, niether I or my friends knew about it its like it just went under the radar of most people in our time
I remember thinking when angry birds came out how sad it is that kids are obsessed with a terrible game and no longer go outside alone from age 7 to 18, staying out till night abd making friends double or three times our age, instead of sitting home watching a screen like your generation. Yuck what a pathetic, sad generation
@David T if you hate kids why are you even watching a video about angry birds, you're a loser
I really do miss this series. Going into more recent games during 2018 basically made me realise that all those whimsical memories and fantasies of fun I had were basically gone. And seriously, if Rovio wants to say to their fans that they're trying to make things better for them, best to just do it, since actions always speak louder than words.

Bro crush the castle was totally suspended from my memory. That game was epic.
crush the castle was 10x better than angry birds, just not as sellable as angry birds because it has realistic world models and characters and was not cartoonish and sfw, like, for kids and younger teenagers which always makes more money nowadays... not to mention the fact that it was originally a flash game on a format from the old days which doesn't translate well to mobile devices and their small screens and its aging fanbase (and that was years ago; now flash game fans are in their mid to late 20s and 30s...)

Rovio could've replaced the class upgrade chest with some other chest instead, it shouldn't take that much time
Speaking of Angry Birds Epic, the ABE community has really grown.

5:10 i still have the dvd's with the cartoons lyng around
Same
Ah this game, I remember downloading it and scrolling to the far right of the level selection page just to see if there were hidden eggs. That and the little series they had. And lastly, never completing angry birds epic.
Angry birds was one of my nannas favourite mobile games and I’d see her play the games all the time. Unfortunately she now suffers from dementia, but it’s always nice to be reminded of the things she liked, and that I always saw her playing on her iPad with the sky blue coloured case
