Everyone worries about using dawn dish soap to clean leather. It is unfounded. Dawn is gentle. And your conditioning replaces any oils stripped by the detergent.
Biggest issue with me is the speed hooks I’ve had to file down and sand the back of one pair. it literally ripped the leather of the tongue in 2 wears luckily it’s not deep, but had I not caught them I promise it would of only been 4 wears before it would of been all the way through. So before even wearing my second pair I filed and sanded them to be safe next I’m gonna get mole skin for them. I’m all for patina and presses from the laces and such but not literally cuts within one day not even 10 hours of use.
The soles look great for 3 years. I have had a pair for 1 year and are more worn. I am not surprised the uppers look great since you take care of them. They are great boots.
I agree about the smell. I wear mine about 4 times a week for the last 25 months. They smell like leather on the inside even when I just take them off.
I was stubborn about taking the shoe tree advice but I wish I would’ve listened. Cedar shoe trees make all the difference when it comes to smell. I have a pair that I didn’t use and trees and they stink up the room when I take them off. Have another pair I used trees with and they don’t smell a bit
I have a few pair. When I bought my black ones, I asked if they could change the eyelets and speed hooks to black, and it was only like $20 to do so at the Redwing store.
First high quality boots I ever bought and I made the rookie mistake of getting them the wrong width. Too wide. They look a little like clown shoes as a result. I haven’t made that mistake since. (You’re right about shoe trees. Without them this particular boot does get bulbous)
Please don't use Dawn or saddle soap. You can clean them with water and a brush. Let dry. Use your favorite conditioner. Soap has the wrong ph and will cause the leather to rot long term.
I clean mine once a year with saddle soap. Wearing mine for 11 years now. One resole done already. No issue so far dude. No idea, where you are getting the information from but right now I will keep doing it like this for the next 11 years man.
@@AlmightyG1969There are a few leather PH based cleaners. Saphir makes 3. The Medaille D'or OmniNetoyant would be the closest match. That said an interesting thing when using Glycerin Saddle Soap which is more for deep staining. If you use vinegar 1 parts to 2 parts eater you can restore the proper alkalinity to the leather. Is Saddle Soap great for leather? No usually, but I have a friend who is a farmer. He does hose down his boots. But between cow manure, chicken manure, goats, chemicals, thick mud, etc. No amount of water or less harsh cleaners will work. That trick took his boots from lasting 18 months to 3 years to a decade plus. He doesn't want to pay the $20+ for the Saphir and it's his money. To be fair, he uses a horse brush and glycerin, as little water as possible, goes panel by panel. Then scrubs out the remaining glycerin with the clean dauber and water and wiping down a third time. Finally he finishes with the vinegar and water combo. Insert trees and let dry. Then condition and go from there. Downside, it does pull out the conditioning agents put in by the tannery. But if he didn't the lifespan of his boots would be very low. Myself? Usually road salt is the worst they face with the exception of my beaters.
Yep. I never understood why people say these are comfortable. They are not. There is zero cushioning or shock absorption and your feet will hurt if walking long distances in any heritage style boots.
@@Jay-bw3flI guess it depends on the person, though don't know why. Personally, my redwings have a lot of cork that have molded perfectly around my feet and even toes and it just fits like a padded leather couch. I can reach in and feel all the crevices formed on the sole. So comfortable, and I often wear other leather loafer and dress shoes. Still a boot newbie, but I love my wings. I'm surprised they broke in within a month or so.
@@TheNunakun it doesn’t matter if it’s molded to your foot if it’s hard as a rock. Let’s be realistic here these boots are not comfortable for walking any distances compared to any shoes or boots with a real amount cushioning synthetic or natural. And the millimeter of cork is not providing a measurable amount of cushioning or shock absorption compared to any normal shoes. Anyone reading this don’t believe anyone saying red wing heritage boots are comfortable. They are not.
You are very easy on your boots. 3 years of daily wear??? They look amazing. My rangers looked worse than that after 6 months of 3 day a week wear. But I am over 300lbs lol

I've always wondered about using Dawn soap to scrub off the dirt and grime. Glad you've found success with the upkeep. Cheers!

Bingo
Don't throw them away when the soles wear out! Get them resoled. That's part of the reason why heritage-construction boots are so awesome.

Did you put your IR when raining??
I’m big fan about your reviews 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks I really appreciate that

It's called science, but ok. Using it once per year is no issue. Most people clean their boots more often than that. Dude.
