Johnny is an absolute mensch of hang gliding and such a lovely guy. He was already a legend when I started to learn - also at Steyning, and I joined the Sourthern Club, and he was so welcoming and encouraging, and still is almost 40 years after I started - thanks Johnny!
I started flying in October 1974. Although I'm on the other side of the pond, many of my early experiences were similar to Johnny's, so, thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Johnny, I truly enjoyed every minute of this interview. I don't think I've flown with you since the Masters in Tennessee, or the worlds in Grenoble, but I sure hope I can get over to England and fly with you again very soon. It would be a thrill. Joe Greblo
At 0:00, the picture of you at the American Cup launch at Chattanooga TN- I was there! You Brits were amazing in that comp. In 2000 I visited Graham Slater at Clench Common and he treated me to a flight in his little carbon-fiber airplane, over a dozen "patterns in the cereal fields." Thanks for the memories and the encouragement you guys shared by your example in pursuit of flight, always with a lot of _class_. This Alabama boy says thanks to all you pioneers who shared the dream, and inspired many others like me to SOAR! I went on to fly for 30+ yrs.😍
Brings back old memories. I started hang gliding in 1974 shortly after attending the event at Steyning that Johnny mentions. Nowadays I mainly fly paragliders where I teach the sport in Northern Ireland when the weather permits!
Bertie Kennedy i learnt to paraglide at Steyning bowl this year with airsports paragliding. I didnt have a clue about the history of the place!!! Amazing
Thank you for posting this! I very much enjoyed it and spent some time afterwards looking for similar videos and couldn't find much...there should be more videos like this!

Hey Johny! Great video, great to hear your voice again. Andrew Wilson here, Natalie and I have just watched this and been reminded of all the fun times we had in the UK flying hang gliders and especialy the league competitions with you. I have not been as consistant as you, I have flown hang gliders then sailplanes for a few years here in New Zealand, then back to hang gliders and represented N.Z. at the worlds in Big Spring, Texas in 2007. Am now paragliding. We have a married daughter near Cambridge in the UK so get over from time to time and hope to catch up again one day. All the best, great to see you in good health and good spirits! All the best from New Zealand!
Hi Andrew, I remember you and nat flying at buster, good to hear you guys are alive and well, you may remember me from buster, and charging, I was always flying with my pal Malcolm, best wishes guys
I don't understand why many more people don't have this passion he has! Such a beautiful sport, best thing I ever did in life.
