Its so fitting that Light & Darkness both have their positive and negative qualities that only balance each other out when the fragile equilibrium is maintained. Light represents hope and purity, but too much Light is blinding and destructive. Darkness represents passion and strength, but too much Darkness is cruel and misguided. Both can and WILL eat you alive if you don't balance them out like Jaiden/Judai does throughout the show. Its a simple theme in retrospect, but they really go HAM with the existential dread.
I like how GX uses the fact that the universe is mostly made of *DARK* matter and one of the most destructive forces in the universe is the *blinding* supernova.
The light can guide you in the deepest darkness, but the darkness can shield you from the brightest lights. It's important to maintain balance on the road to dawn.
The fact Kingdom Hearts fits the theme of GX says alot which is why I wish Sora has his own Supreme King like arc moving forward in the series due to how similar he and Jaden/Judai are as characters
@supershadow125 Yeah, he's currently alone with just Strelitzia by his side all it takes is the right arc and moments to make Sora's darkness and connection to Vanitas through Ventus the ultimate Supreme King plot point.
wow... that is what i was thinking when i created my chaos summon chant "The Light blinds your mind, The Darkness drowns your soul. Between the Evil of two, the your body swings in the Pendulum of Chaos." and when i go more positive, i go more kinder aspects of them "The Light bathes your body, The darkness calms your mind. Between the opposites, Your soul rests in Pendulum of Chaos"
This reversal of the light and dark tropes is what made GX one of my favorites. The writer, Yoshida, loved to take Christian mythology and examine it under a different lens.
@@Elkanimates mythology as in "its a story that gets treated with Significance and meaning, and affects the way people see the world" stories about real things can be mythology, stories about unreal things can be too (and they aren't inherently not-meaningful just because they didnt literally happen)
"I haven't given in to the allure of power, by accepting power I truly understood. Power Doesn't exist to sate your hunger. It exist to achieve a greater cause." Jaden spitting bro. I think with this he just cracked my top 5 Broken heroes list.
My thought is that the power of the gentle darkness is essentially the same thing as the darkness of Judai’s heart. Judai was unnaturally positive, he never felt any true negative emotions in his life (the shock therapy may be related), never actually hated anyone with a passion, until his duel with brron, and only then was the power of the supreme king awakened. Judai used the newly awakened power of the gentle darkness to create a supreme king persona (he wasn’t possessed, he was essentially pretending that he was a different person). The key difference with someone like Yami Marik, is that the Supreme King is still Judai himself, and its never stated otherwise. The climax of season 3 was Judai accepting that these negative emotions (the supreme king) is a part of himself. We all have aspects of ourselves we don’t like and we may try to pretend they don’t exist, but without accepting the good and the bad in our personalities, we can’t become whole.
Another anime that changes morality on light and dark is Fairy Tail. We see many villains using star magic and white magic that are the most terrifying characters. Making people experience euphoria until their brains melt, or completely earasing a persons entire personality. These examples really go to show that each concept are not good or evil, but rather, the person using them are brought into question.
The logistics here just aren't the same if we're being clear I think. Light and Star Magic as far as I recall are used mostly by the villains in FT because it's supposed to be one the most ancient forms of magic, whereas all the other kinds of magic as well as dark are just derivatives or simple corruption of mechanics that were originally present in their universe.
This whole Video had me thinking about Sachmet, a Lionheaded Goddess from Egypt. She was an aspect of Ra, representing his Wrath and the Desertcreating and merciless Heat of the Midday Sun
Wish someone covered this long ago but my god am I happy it was covered now. I mean it's similar to other stuff, even real world where Justice can be used for good but also for evil too. It depends on the view point of the one who uses that concept... much like Light and Dark. Too much Light corrupts it to become evil and too much Dark wants to swallow everything into it. Balance is necessary to achieve the future. It's why I didn't mind Darkness showing up because even back then, he was always there luring even when the Light of Destruction was active. They're just two entities to the extreme of each other and yet desire similar goals. Fantastic video!
Didn’t even think about blue eyes v black magician, good call! Also, lightning being the main antagonist for VRAINS, while the dark ignis was seen as a good character until his whole race got eliminated at his hands, at least in part. Great video! When the power of the gentle darkness was more so unlocked in Judai he was in a very bad state of mind after his friends died and hearing that Johan also died. This is combination with the great power granted by the gentle darkness corrupted Judai
Not really, Neos is infused with the Gentle Darkness, creating the card while Yubel, a card banished to space was tainted with the Light of Destruction.
it's a good take on ying yang perspective. I also found deeper comparative as the soldiers committing treason on their bosses orders. This light is why Neos and neo spacians are sentient. just like the darkness is for Yubel. and both fought against their creator. So in a sense, your birthright doesn't determine your future.
Would’ve been cool for Majome to use Light & Darkness in the show because its duality compliments the shows themes so well. And would be pivotal in showing his character development
Thanks for watching! That it does, I have part 2 of Life Lessons dropping first Sunday of December. If that goes well, then I do have an idea for part 3 as well!
This is one of, if not my favorite videos I've watched! I think your breakdown on the different extremes of both light and darkness and how they affect people is thoughtful and interesting. I honestly don't think i could have put it anymore intelligently. Oh and can I just say I love how calming your voice is? I think how down to earth and mellow you sound helped make the video so enjoyable in my opinion 😉 😊
In Sevens there's a duel between Yuga and The⭐Lukeman - Luke under somekind of alter ego possesion as superhero. Luke says that he is fighting evil Darkness (Luke uses mostly Light Monsters) and the friends point out that Yuga's deck is mostly Dark Attribute Seven's Roads and Magnum cards. TO which Yuga reveals he was secretly evil and leans into the evil stick 100% - as a joke.
I like to think that while kaiba was self focused into continuous self improvement, expecting to make "invincible" endboards; atem Yugi was a critical thinker and as such he used cards as kuriboh to have what was useful at the moment and to hit the enemy where it hurts rather than seeking unreachable "perfection", thus reflecting light, creation, and darkness, erosion
Honestly this themes keeps going on until Vrains, Lightning realized he wasn't perfect and tried to blind everyone with deceits to hide his own imperfection
The 4th season of Digimon, Digimon Frontiers, does something similar with the true antagonist being the angel Digimon Lucemon, and it was thanks to the sacrifice of Kiochi, the warrior of darkness, that the main characters were able to win.
The title is incorrect. Gx teaches the alchemical axiom. As above so below. The whole of GX is filled with chemical allegory. Banner is supposed to be Hermes Trismegistos. That is why he gives Jaden Sabatiel spell. The dorms follow loosely the order of the alchemical order of construction deconstruction and refinement. Those are part of the themes. There is more I can go into detail but idk how much interest there is in that.
To me there’s no right or wrong when it comes to the forces of Light and Darkness both of these powerful forces help balance the universe it really depends on how you use these forces Light and Darkness have been balanced since the beginning of universe this eternal oscillation will always remain balanced Darkness isn’t a bad thing unless you choose to make it that way Light and Darkness are two sides of the same coin. Some people think Darkness is evil but Light is a positive force but in reality Light and Darkness can be used for good and evil Darkness is not some thing to be feared we all have Light and Darkness within us and up to us to keep them balanced within ourselves.

Honestly, I still prefer the dub storyline for multiple reasons. A factor relevant to the video being: The characters in Season 1 were led astray and then subsumed by darkness, the characters in Season 2 were blinded and then subsumed by light and the characters in season 3 were led to ruin and tragedy on equal share by light and darkness. The series ends by destroying or containing the malicious forces of both sides and combining both elements into something greater, something that can truly change the world for the better. The whole picture is drawn already, Season 4 is redundant and breaks the balance.
