2024 here. Not sure which update ruined failover on UDM-PRO. Used to work just fine per instruction in this video. Using Frontier fiber + T-Mobile 5G home internet. Unplugged Frontier tonight to test, takes about 2 - 3 minutes for the connection to failover on UDM-PRO. Used to be a split second without noticeable disruption.
Thanks so much for this series, I was advised for a Mikrotik setup which is great but absolutely impossible to use so as of tomorrow I am replacing everything to a UDM Pro / 3 x U6 Lite / 1 x USW 24 POE PRO / 1 x USW 16 POE
My RUTX11 shows up in a week, and I can't wait to get it configured with dual-WAN failover on my UDMP, and load-balanced across two carrier SIMs in the RUTX11. I can even 'weight' how much traffic goes to each SIM, so I don't have to worry about the UDMP not having an LB built in.
Great series! Timing is perfect for me as I’ve jumped into the Unifi world with both feet for my home network. Hope you’re planning a DDNS/Radius/VPN video. Would also like to see how a new VPN network fits in with all of the Guest / IOT rules you created in episode 5.
What if you have 2 fibers coming in in 2 differens buildings, where the buildings are connected with fiber. How should the setup be? What kind of devices should be used?
I've had the load balance feature working about a year ago and tested it with one cable provider and one fiber provider. ! After I rebooted UDMP with them both active it gave me the option for load balance and a setting to use them by percentage of preference.. the UPNP option also requested which WAN connection to use for UPNP mapping. I don't have both now to test as I was transitioning ISP's at the time but am surprised that in your case this isn't available. The reason I had to reboot because the GPON module wouldn't work untill it rebooted and the console logs showed lots of errors when it was inserted. It all worked after the reboot though. Maybe try it?
I plug an RJ45 module into port #10. then using a cat6 cable, connect port#10 (WAN2) into my router but the status remains as Disconnected. I have four RJ45 modules (two 10Gb and 2 1Gb) there is no change when either of the 4 are plugged in (and in turn connected to another device/router). By chance, have you seen this type of behaviour. And can suggest something to try?
Chris, I am from Malaysia, I enjoy so much all of your videos, because of you... I endup with Ubiquiti UDM-Pro, USW16 and HD Nano for my SoHo networking setup. I like the way you explain and tutorials. LOUD AND CLEAR... easy understanding... I am not a networking / IT guy... due to lack of knowledge on IT, most of configurations and setup, i read and learn alot towards to my SoHo... Thank you Chris~! keep it up!
So I have the USG-3P bought a few years ago now, and under the wlan2 section their is an additional option other than failover called weighted LB, clicking that gives us a percentage that we can choose say 50%. So I'm guessing its only a matter of time that they update the support for your device too. seeing as my device is now a legacy device. The ISP i use has a dual connection over fibre device they send us if we want to do isp load balancing with two accounts, they are achieving this using a specially configured Intel NUC. which then plugs into the network, but using the USG would be better if the software was more configureable.
Chris, So going through this tutorial on setting up my POSSIBLE UDMPro. At home, I currently am running a EdgeRouter 4 with the UI Controller in a VM. I want to add cameras. Any reason not to dump my ER4 and go with UDMPRO? Everything else I have is Unify.
Love this, question though... If I have static IP on both services and my DNS info is all pointing to the primary IP service, if my internet goes down how do I setup the UDMP/SE so the backup ISPs IP is still picking up the traffic pointing to the main ISP IP so my websites etc all still remain accessible during a failover event?
can I set sfp port as secondary WAN with pppoe with login details as provided by my ISP ? Thank you, great video, while in your video , under ipv4, there was DHCP visible. so wanted to make sure. thanks
The interface for changing the WAN priority order is quite sporadic as it is sometimes necessary to put the SFP+ WAN ahead of the standard ethernet one. I have mine set to treat the SFP+ as "WAN1" as it makes more sense to use what is quicker of the two first.
Hi, Thank you for the video. I wonder if you can have port 9 as the secondary wan port? Right now I have port 10 SFP+ as only WAN. When I connect a 5G router in port 9 it jumps over.
I find your video very intuitive and easy to understand. Because of your videos I switched from Edge routers/switches to UniFi solution at home and I'm very happy. Can you please do a test and a proper setup for UDM PRO or UDM SE (which I have) for load balancing WAN? With latest firmware update this is possible (at least on UDM SE). What will be the con and pros for load balance against failover (now I'm using failover as I think on load balance some applications are not functioning properly but maybe I miss some settings). Thank you.
Hello I know this is years old but I have a very random question perhaps you can answer Using the dream machine pro in a failover WAN configuration is it possible to apply certain firewall rules that only apply in the failover condition? My use case is that my failover internet would be metered, and so I would like to block high-bandwidth services in a failover condition. Thanks so much for your videos they've been really helpful!
Hi I have a question for dual ISP running on a Dream Machine Pro. Environment ISP1 metro Net Fiber 2.5 g ISP2 Spectrum Cable 200 mbs If I plug the Spectrum device into ISP1 some channels are not available If I plug the spectrum device into ISP2 I get all the channels Is there a way I can setup the dream machine to look a both ISPs and decide which one to uses? Or is there some other solution?
Mhm looks interesting, currently looking to replace my TP Link ER605, however despite failover, is there a option for policy routing? For example a specific client should use wan1 and another wan2? One more question, since the wan2 port is only SFP. For that I would need another switch from the router to the switch so I can go from the switch to the UDM pro. or are there any converters to SFP so I can let that step out and go from the router to the UDM pro
can you do a VLAN and firewall for steaming devices like for plex and a synology nas for the plex to see the synology nas and apple tv or any steaming devices in this UDM-Pro complete setup 2021. one more thing can you do one for unifi protect thank
Hi, mu current home network configuration is based on a Mikrotik CCR1009 and hap ac access points. On the ccr i have 2 isp on the same port/cable but different vlans. So isp1 is port 1 - vlan100 and isp2 is port1 - vlan200. Can the udm pro use this comfiguration for dual wan failover ? Thanks.
I spent quite a lot of time trying to make the WAN (RJ45) use a fixed IP before I had to get one of those SFP+ to RJ45 and use the WAN2 as main port. Are you aware of why its not possible to set a fixed IP on that WAN port on the UDM Pro? Everytime I tried setting the IP settings, the UI reported a fatal error and never saved the settings entered. In case you want to utilize the WAN failover, I would expect that some would like to ensure that they have a fixed IP on those two WAN connections?
Hi Chris, are you aware of what firmware versions had WAN Load Balancing enabled? I beileve that at least one of the 1.9.XX versions had it. Can UDM Pro unit be flashed wth earlier versions to get specific features?
Hi great series. It helped me so much getting my new kit up and running. Is there a way to block certain LANs and/or devices from using the failover LAN. Smashed my data limit in one day :(
Great series. I am actually watching part 3 right now but I want to drop by here and see if there are any recommended settings for better online gaming.
I'm not an expert at all, but I think that enabling "UPnP" will automatically configure port-forwards in order to reduce your latency a bit when playing online games.
awesome and informational video. I have another question. Why doesn't Ubiquity ship to California anymore? Maybe you can shed some light on this? Again thank you for all your great videos. I got into the Ubiquity family because of you. Thanks!

Hi, I use WAN2 with a SFP module to connect the UDM Pro directly to the fiber network of my internet provider. This eliminates the modem/router of the provider. Reason of doing this is that the provider does not allow to put their router in bridge mode to avoid double NAT/routing and related connectivity issues. However, WAN2 seems only to run in failover mode just like in this video (not that much of an issue I think) but like to make WAN2 the main connection and WAN1 the failover. Does anybody know how to get this accomplished?
Which SPF module are you using? Did you need to do any special configuration after the fact? I would like to eliminate the provider router away from the equation as well, since I'm now having to configure a double NAT scenario.
Hi Chris, Thanks so much for doing such detailed, informative, easy to understand videos. I installed my UDM Pro today (finally found one with AP's and a switch). I've been looking through your videos for more information on configuring a pi-hole and cant seem to find it. I did see that in your Synology unboxing and configuring video that you mentioned an app on there that could do it, but im not sure of the rules i would need to use to make it effective. Is that something that you have covered and I am missing? Or is it something you are planning on covering in the future? Again, thanks for all the help your videos have been!
Hey Chris, great series as usual. With regards to failover, I have to offices for our business and currently use VPN. But that VPN requires WAN IP's for a link to function. What happens when the primary goes down down at one end?
This is good feature in theory however I’m finding more recently that the WAN does not revert back to the primary Internet link once it’s available again. This would create an issue if you’re on LTE backup and subject to excess data charges. There is no option on the Unifi controller to switch WAN links, I’ve had to physically unplug cables to revert which is not ideal.
Have you found a solution to this yet? I'm wondering if some monitoring with a smart plug or some intelligent pings could sever the WAN2 connection when WAN1's public IP is back up and routable. In a power-outage scenario, that might be easier to check, if your WAN1 uplink to a traditional land-line ISP was connected to a managed smartplug, like s Sonoff S31 flashed with Tasmota, so it could detect current on the line, and react accordingly.
i have some questions about starlink: - did its performance improve since you got it? - if so, is it gonna keep improving as they add more satellites? - have they removed the location restriction yet?
Great video. I’m hoping they add load balancing back in

I love my unifi setup sometimes lol when it breaks not so much lol
In a dual-wan failover situation. Why can't we use the same DDNS service for both WAN ports?

sabes si ya se puede usar dual wan balanceado con UDM PRO?
Does anyone think ubiquiti will ever add capability to assign wan 1/2 to specific vlans as another option over load balancing or failover
is it possible to make 2nd wan connection on any of lan port and configure it ?

Is there anyway to reverse the roles, being the SFP port can be 10Gbps, Can i use the original WAN as the fail over?
Can you choose which WAN interface is priority? I have Spectrum and Google Fiber. I'd like GF to be primary and Spectrum to be secondary.

in the android app its possible to selected weighted loadbalance, does it do anything?
I wish you can set wan 2 as main and wan 1 as backup

Is it possible to switch port 9 to be failover rather than port 10?
What if I have 3 ISPs? Does UDM pro have settings for WAN3? Or it is only two WAN connections available?
One year later and you probably don‘t need the answer anymore, but….
Only WAN1 and WAN2 in June 2024.
