I struggled to get this part to work - I set my ISP Router into Modem Modem, and could not (for the life of me) get connection via my UDM. In the UI, it mentioned internet service down - until I flicked back to router (disabled the wifi), so I can send out IPs from the Unifi AP instead - now working without any issues - thanks Chris.
I noticed your Wan Port was Eugene, OR! I lived in Eugene for 10 years, I miss the PNW so much. Thanks for this awesome series, I'm slowly going through each video. I'm excited to fine turn my UDR and especially have some Vlans. Cheers!
I'm moving from very rural Oregon, (lucky to have had Starlink), to southern Indiana where I will have 1 gig fiber. Your channel led me to invest in a Unify solution for the new house. I've already purchased all the hardware I need to start the install, even though we haven't left Oregon yet. I can't wait to get this up and running. I'm also going to get a Home Assistant system up and running.
So happy I bought UDM-Pro a month or 2 ago... really sped up my gigabit internet compared to my ASUS routers I had before hehehe... And so happy I followed your channel a while ago and now these series... excellent job man! Greetings from Belgium.
Awesome video Chris. I am hoping you cover installing SSL certs in one of the upcoming videos. I know you have before but it would be great seeing it specifically for the UDMP.
Thanks for awsome videos! I Just started a new job, and they use the exact same Ubiquiti equipment here as you use. except for some old switches etc.. But the guy who worked before me, who set everything up, he didn´t write anything down. Not a single clue on how everything is connected, (and I´m alone on this position) So these videos realy realy help me out! awsome!
This is fantastic! Just installed my UDM Pro with some APs and whatnot. I'm a novice when it comes to networking really, so this is tremendously helpful. Thank you!
This series is so awesome. I cannot wait until I receive my new UDM Pro and start setting things up. Your channel has been the sole reason that I built out my first UniFi network 4 years ago and I have not had any regrets. Thanks again for all your extremely thorough instructional videos.
Thanks for your videos. They were quite helpful in setting up UDM Pro. Is there a way to monitor the traffic on the individual Wan's. I have set it up to load balance 80/20 but I have no idea what the distribution really is.
Overriding the Inform Host (@11:20) is useful in the scenario where you have the Unifi Controller software running on a system that can't be found by the routine. For instance, I run it from a Docker container on my Synology NAS and the adoption took forever. The solution presented was abort the adoption, forget the device and change the Inform Host with the IP address of the NAS and try again. Then it works. Maybe people who know how the system works behind the scenes can figure out why that is, but I'm happy that it works for me...
This video is an awesome help guide into the nitty gritty of the system, but it is wild how much things have changed since this video and version 6.2.26 to now at version 6.5.55. The UI is similar but still so different.
Thanks for your guidance, I bought all new Unify equipment to replace my home network and thanks to your videos it made it a lot easier. I ran into a problem with my 8 port PoE switch which I wasn't able to adopt but I ended having to reset it and worked perfectly. Thanks a lot man!
Thank you Chris! I can not understand when you explain the settings because i have version Network 7.4.162 the latest version with UDM SE. It is very different with your version. Do you have an updated version?
Been waiting anxiously for a video just from Chris for this piece! You've guided me through a vast majority of my knowledge of the UniFi ecosystem! Thanks! Beer on it's way!
Hello Chris, Since yesterday I have my UDM-Pro up and running, after using a backup created from my USG-Pro/CKG2+ setup. Setting it up from scratch did not work for me strangely. However, the Unifi OS screens have changed. You might have a look into this. For example: security, firewall and port forwarding have been merged into each other on one page. But I really like your how-to's and I did learn from it, so thank you! Cheers, André (from the Netherlands)
can you go through iot and vlans to separate smart device, guest wifi, and rules in this UDM Pro Complete setup thanks P.S you might have went through it already but can you did it in this UDM Pro Complete Setup and again thanks
Thanks, Chris, for a really great playlist. I just finished up my wiring closet and am starting to integrate my smart home devices. The UDM pro gives me a really good baseline for a system and your videos have helped me immensely. Beer is on the way! Many thanks!
Very helpful. Trying to integrate a UDM-Pro into my existing network has been plagued by IP Address and other problems, but chapter 3 seems to have solved them - fingers crossed.
My gear arrives tomorrow (I feel like a kid the night before Christmas) I am using Quantum fiber aka Centrylink which I believe is VLAN. I am told you must keep the router/modem POS in a transparent pass through mode. Has anyone else setup the UDM pro with CenturyLink/Quantum fiber? Thanks. Love the videos, you have a new sub.
Hi Chris. I currently run our company network with a Cisco Meraki Firewall with a Unifi AP- AC Pro Access Point connected. I am considering replacing the Cisco Meraki firewall with a UDM-Pro gateway. Would the configuration that is pre-configured in the AC -Pro Access Point migrate across to the UDM-Pro settings ? or would I need to repeat the settings ? The settings within the AC-Pro AP include a Guest Network
I love watching your videos every time. I myself have a setup with USG and 16p switch PoE with 2 AC pros. I want to replace my USG for the UDM pro, but I want to set up 2x Vlan directly on the SFP WAN port. I read that this was possible with early access 1.11.0-14? Do you know if this is possible or do you have to adjust other things in the setup? I need this for separate inernet Vlan and IPTV Vlan
Should the default "LAN" be considered just a management network? I guess it defaults to VLAN1? Should user traffic networks rather be on a different VLAN?
I have just got the UDM Pro SE, which the WAN comes in at the front of the house to the pro. I have a 30m cable from the UDM pro SE to the backroom where the serve and the other devices are. Do i need another UDM switch as I have a CISCO and the software shows just the switch not the devices connected to the cisco switch, and i need to add a wifi AP down there, should i use the new mesh or just the wifi 6 lite
Thanks for all your videos on the UDM Pro. I've followed all your instructions and it worked perfectly for about six months, then the whole network became unstable and started not allowing my Mac computer and iPhones into the LAN Network. There was a lot of problems with the Wifi, which I've found very strange. I live in a 750 sq. ft. apartment, and on top of the UDM Pro, I have a UAP-nanoHD Access point. I think I am going to have to restart the whole thing, but it is a lot of work gone to waste. Maybe some indication about restoring from a backup would be very helpful. Another question: Do you think it is convenient to set up MAC address Filters and Fixed IP Addresses for each device connected to the IoT and LAN networks? Also, do you think it is convenient to create two separate LAN networks, one for home and one for work? (I work out of my home). Thanks for your help and keep up the good work.
Hi Chris, maybe you will/should talk also about Smart QoS. The prepopulate feature is only available in classic mode. As an idea i would also appreciate that you show us how to go for a certificate to avoid that stupid browser untrust...you did a video about that but a refresh with the new unifios would be highly appreciated and would fit also for the business aspect of the udm pro
I’m very new to networking and am considering the UDM Pro. It is pretty complicated. I’m going to do some more studying to see if this is for me. I like the idea of the NVR and security built in. Hope I can figure this out.
@@robertvittetoe6158 agree, even though it seems complicated, it is a really good unit and would like to use it so maybe will have someone help me set it up.
I am finding less and less reasons to switch back to the old interface. I did recently have some issues changing ports and speeds on USG-3 and USG-4-Pro units, which could only be done in the old interface. The new interface had the options listed, but would produce an error (and not apply the change) when applied
Great video! Quick question, I set up a UDM Pro with a network controller and Protect for a friend. As the first person to log in, it made me the owner. Now that setup is complete, how do I assign ownership to the actual owner and remove myself from the user's list?
i have a dream machine pro sp edition on a camp for turists, it often runs out of available ip adresses, i have the leasetime to 1440 minutes. can i simply enable the auto scale network to have moore than 254 ip adresses in the range ? does it automatic reconfigure the lan settings to 512 range ? great channel by the way, i by you a beer :)
Hi theres. congrats for the outstanding content. Im having trouble running multi room audio on my echo devices, any chance you might know what configuration can help me with that? My devices are connected to differente APs, on a single IoT network.
Seems the UDM-SE or the latest update there are some UI changes...from Internet Threat Management (now Global Threat Management) to other parts omitted or redesigned.
Great video series. Thanks for your efforts. I am considering upgrading my home network to Ubiquiti's system. But, I currently run my own dhcp/dns servers on a pair of Linux SBCs. With a DMP, I know I can just disable the dhcp server, allowing me to use my existing setup, but would I lose any substantial management or other functionality if I do so? Primarily I like the existing setup because I can easily create aliases, SRV records, round robin entries, etc. Is any of this kind of functionality available with the UDM/Unify, so I can just abandon my existing setup? Note that these features aren't critical, but they are very useful at times for some specialized config or for testing, etc. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Afternoon! Can you please make a video about a self hosted controller (with remote sites) on a network that sits behind a UDMP? Not controlling the UDMP on that controller (we all know that won't work) but maintaining a self hosted controller that has numerous other remote sites once you upgrade to a UDMP. I've tried this, transferred the port forwards to the UDMP, and the self hosted controller loses contact with the external devices. I suspect the built in UDMP controller is not passing traffic along on those ports / they interfere with each other. Thank you!
Another thing that I can't seem to find in the new user interface in settings is how to make a backup, and how to restore a backup. Those are found under the Maintenance section of the old UI.
I am debating between getting a UDM or a UDM pro. I know that the UDM pro has protect built into it but if I end up using unify protect, I would buy the 4 bay NVR. So my question is do you recommend going with a UDM pro or just a regular UDM for home use.
I guess that strongly depends on whether you have a rack you want to put the gear in or not, and if you have 10g networks, and if you have a very fast internet connection (1g or more). If any of these is true, go with the UDM Pro + an Access Point and you will be about the same price as a non-Pro + the NVR. If the above are all not true and the router is placed outside of a rack somewhere in your living space where an AP makes sense, you might be better of with the non-Pro.
At 12:42 there is content filtering. If I set it to family it'll block VPN it says. Stupid question, but does that mean I cannot VPN at all to my UDM-Pro or not into my network behind my UDM-Pro? Or are there settings to do that you still can do a VPN at Family settings? Still noob at networking lol... And if so, is that the ONLY difference between Family and Work setting?
Can it do static DHCP allocation? I.e. configuring a MAC address to always get the same specific IP? I have some network stuff like printers that are a pain to configure the network settings on the device so I preffer to leave the network settings as DHCP and then have the router give it the "static ip" it should have.
Hello Chris, first I want to say, you are an amazing teacher and very easy to follow on how to use the Ubiquit devices. Thank You! Question if I may ask: I currently have UniFi 48 Poe Enterprise Switch that will be using as for my MDF and have several UniFi 48 Po Pro for LDF's. And I have a UDMPRO for my Firewall. What would be best to setup DHCP Server. I am planning to use the UDMPRO but I don't know if it is a overload being that it will also be handling my Firewall.
so you dont change '' overide unify inform host''. but i see in a lot of other videos that they do. so they dont have an IP adres but a DNS adres. Could you please do an indept video for that? how to make certificates, how to install them, how to get a domain adres etc.... cant find realy good videos about that
Hi Chris, thanks for the helpful videos. Do you think you could do one showing how to switch controllers? For example from a UDM to a UDM Pro? That would be fantastic. Thanks
When I installed, my ISP recognized that the MAC address connected to their router had changed, and I had to call them a few times to get to someone who knew what to do to re-enable my connection. Otherwise, the UDM Pro has been great.
Do you know where I can Blacklist / whitelist Custom Domains i.e. portal.azure.com e for outbound connections? The dream Machine had it in their previous Firmware and now I don’t see it anywhere. By the way the content filtering that os located on the Network tab is not the same, there you blacklist custom domains
Should printers be on the IoT VLAN? If so, how do we configure the firewall rules to enable the primary VLAN printing to the IoT VLAN's printer? I hate printers! Thanks for your video!
If you do that having separate VLANs is rather pointless. In a huge network there might be some broadcasting benefits, but in a huge corporate network you would hopefully be using different hardware like Meraki.
@@tommytigerpants then I’d put printers on the same VLAN as the devices attempting to print to them. The IoT should in my opinion just be separate appliances/devices that only need to communicate with the Internet.
OK, how do you add these to an already setup network with an existing controller that you are already happy with? Ie just add the video storage/management part and not have it work as a network controller. Is that possible? We have a large network with a cloud hosted Hostifi controller, now we just want to add this device for UniFi protect.
Not sure if I really know what I’m talking about here, but I’ll give it a shot in the dark. Is it possible to make a backup of the current configuration of your existing controller and then upload it into your new UDM Pro? Just like restoring a backup, but putting it on a new machine.
Is there any way to customize the content filter? In essence, I would like to just block malicious and porn sites, but don't necessarily need UA-cam set to safe mode. I am not sure my peeps would be able to watch any UA-cam if swearing wasn't allowed.
They need to fix the fans. They are not quiet once you add a HD the HDD fan spins up and has that Delta-fan whine. Not to mention switching between wan 1 and wan 2 on the fly.
Well, "fix" might be the wrong word here. I am not a fan of buying rack-gear and replacing the fans with silent ones. HDDs, especially when running 24/7 need some proper airflow to stay in their comfort zone temperature-wise. Otherwise, it will reduce their reliability and lifetime. Especially when you are running a 1HDD setup like in the UDM Pro, you might consider treating your HDD as good as possible to keep it up and running. I do understand all the people replacing the fans and moaning about noise, but what you have to understand is that rack mountable gear is not supposed to be used in the immediate living space and thus is also not optimized for it. And it shouldn't be, because Otherwise, people like me would complain that I run it in my server-rack and even though I ramp the fans up, the cooling performance is still average at best. I understand your post if you don't have a basement or separate room for your rack, but noone sat there and added additional lines of code to the fan control to ramp up when there is a HDD installed, if it wasn't for a reason, because even 5 minutes of time of a technician cost the manufacturer money.
I got my UDM Pro last week and spent the weekend migrating from an USG (started fresh with multiple VLANs). Tried the content filtering for my IoT network for fun, but now its impossible to turn it off. I select "none" and apply... still set to Family. Anyone else got this feature stuck? I have a support case with Unifi support and are awaiting their second line.
Seem to be a bug with the honeypot. I noticed some error messages about the honeypot so I removed them and disabled the feature. Now I could remove the content filtering.
In fact, a UDM Pro "SE" is listed to be submitted to the FCC. However, this is most likely supposed to mean "Special Edition" rather than "Second Edition". Soon? No. From the first listing to having the unit in Early Access is typically a timespan of about 6-9 months, and then there is EA that takes somewhere from 1-6 months and then there is availability.... A half way trustworthy source posted on reddit that this Special Edition will most likely feature PoE AF on the 1g ports, the WAN-RJ45 connector to feature 2,5g in speed and... maybe some other minor changes, but that is the main thing. If that is enough reason to wait about a year to adopt it for you, wait for it. If not, I guess you can buy the recent version just as well. You have to understand that UBNT always struggles with firmware for new devices. The UDM Pro is halfway ok by now, but the new device will start from zero and will take a while to get reliable again.
Today i tried to simply create a new iot VLAN thats tagged to 3 Switchports with the corresponding port Profile on the newest version of the unifi controller .. it failed to get dhcp and internet .. I tried it multiple times on the old and new gui... nothing works.. it sucks when such simple tasks make problems. This new double way of doing things is just a mess. They should stuck to one System and keep it solid. Thank good i cant deploy unifi in the next months because nothing is avaliable in europe because of the delivery shortage. I hope they get their shit together.
Be good to get a refresh video of this with the new dashboard with this being all out of date. Very helpful anyways.
Well said .. hard to complain about all of the new updates coming out .. great content Chris
Love to see you do a video upgrading from the full unifi system that was using the USG to this UDM-Pro.

If the above are all not true and the router is placed outside of a rack somewhere in your living space where an AP makes sense, you might be better of with the non-Pro.
I put in an old SSD drive, but I wonder if I don't need it and can remove it since I don't use any cameras
Why did you skip the IGMP snooping setting in the network lan part?
It would be really great if ubiquiti could hurry up and release that unifi branded patch panel
This is fantastic. Thank you.
Hello, can you change the dns to a Raspberry pi (PiHole) to block all ads on the network or does this route have the ability to block ads?
Can it do static DHCP allocation? I.e. configuring a MAC address to always get the same specific IP? I have some network stuff like printers that are a pain to configure the network settings on the device so I preffer to leave the network settings as DHCP and then have the router give it the "static ip" it should have.
If the WAN connection includes multiple VLAN-tagged networks, how can I configure all of them?
Thanks a lot, great help and explanation step by step.. keep up the good work!
Hello Chris, first I want to say, you are an amazing teacher and very easy to follow on how to use the Ubiquit devices. Thank You! Question if I may ask:
I currently have UniFi 48 Poe Enterprise Switch that will be using as for my MDF and have several UniFi 48 Po Pro for LDF's. And I have a UDMPRO for my Firewall. What would be best to setup DHCP Server. I am planning to use the UDMPRO but I don't know if it is a overload being that it will also be handling my Firewall.
Thanks a whole lot Chris! Hope you don't age so we can have you forever😂😂😂
I would like to have my udm pro manage a third party managed switch such as TP-link TL- SG108PE how can it be done
so you dont change '' overide unify inform host''. but i see in a lot of other videos that they do. so they dont have an IP adres but a DNS adres. Could you please do an indept video for that? how to make certificates, how to install them, how to get a domain adres etc.... cant find realy good videos about that
Any plans to update this for 2022? The UI has changed a fair bit
do you have to enable bridge mode in your ISP provider to use the dream pro
oh shoot im the first viewer :) ... thank you for your always great work ... have any work you need done in nyc ??? :)
Ubi just threw the udm pro se in EA and put film on youtube. You going to review it soon as the bear is out? 😁
Hi Chris, thanks for the helpful videos. Do you think you could do one showing how to switch controllers? For example from a UDM to a UDM Pro? That would be fantastic. Thanks
Hey Kevin - yes, I already did a video like that. I think it was called UniFi Site Migration or something similar - check it out!
can you make one that works with MAC?
i wanna asking~~ thanks. what is it wifi PMF. this funtion how to use. thanks
Love your videos
When I installed, my ISP recognized that the MAC address connected to their router had changed, and I had to call them a few times to get to someone who knew what to do to re-enable my connection. Otherwise, the UDM Pro has been great.
One of the reasons routers have a MAC copy function. So the modem thinks you're using the same MAC as before.
Can we connect to our nas using unifi remote access ?
How come out of the 700 speeds you were getting your phone only picked up 140?
His 700 speeds were hard wired speed. The speed for 2.4 and 5 wifi is slower than hard wire. Wifi 5 is faster than 2.4 but 2.4 has longer range.
If you have 700+ speed hardwire , why you had 140+ speed ,WiFi on your phone if you are literal next to the AP ?
how many AP can the UDM pro handle ?
Do you know where I can Blacklist / whitelist Custom Domains i.e. portal.azure.com e for outbound connections? The dream Machine had it in their previous Firmware and now I don’t see it anywhere. By the way the content filtering that os located on the Network tab is not the same, there you blacklist custom domains
I think you should have a udemy course where you cover all the things you couldn't cover here
doesnt affect fiber lines getting 900 plus down and up
Should printers be on the IoT VLAN? If so, how do we configure the firewall rules to enable the primary VLAN printing to the IoT VLAN's printer? I hate printers! Thanks for your video!
If you do that having separate VLANs is rather pointless. In a huge network there might be some broadcasting benefits, but in a huge corporate network you would hopefully be using different hardware like Meraki.
@@KeithGadget thanks for your reply. This is for a home network and primarily a security concern. Thanks for your help in solving this
@@tommytigerpants then I’d put printers on the same VLAN as the devices attempting to print to them. The IoT should in my opinion just be separate appliances/devices that only need to communicate with the Internet.
Why is there no options for admin login alerts or remote login alerts? What am I missing? unreal
Thanks.
@@Burnman83 I replaced the fans with noctua. End user level fix.
Still do not have the ability to adjust the fan speed up or down.
Ya!! Get some!!
Thanks
I got my UDM Pro last week and spent the weekend migrating from an USG (started fresh with multiple VLANs). Tried the content filtering for my IoT network for fun, but now its impossible to turn it off. I select "none" and apply... still set to Family. Anyone else got this feature stuck? I have a support case with Unifi support and are awaiting their second line.
Seem to be a bug with the honeypot. I noticed some error messages about the honeypot so I removed them and disabled the feature. Now I could remove the content filtering.
Will there be a v2 of UDM-Pro soon?
@@Jabin_Winkle PoE + more internal storage: dl.ubnt.com/ds/udm-pro-se_ds
Just heard that Ubiq submitted a new model certification to the FCC called "UDM-Pro SE".
