      I'm not gonna defend the obvious creepy, but I gonna hazard a guess Feely has been alone with female students alone. That isn't the issue. Vast majority of men aren't rapist monsters even though that is what we are told.

    • @Lurklen
      @Lurklen 2 роки тому +28

      @@volourn9764 In their room? Maybe with permission of one of their parents, and maybe with *these* students, who he has knowns since they were small children. But just any other student? I doubt it. Regardless of whether the majority of men are or are not monsters, some of them are. And regardless of the gender of the teacher, the inequalities of the relationship mean that when a student and a teacher are alone in a personal space, there are vulnerabilities that come up. This is the reason for certain behaviors of decorum, this is why Feeney questions the appropriateness of the action. The protocol of how to act with a student is a protection to safeguard students, and teachers, against these vulnerabilities being exploited.
      Because the monsters don't come with labels. And while I believe and hope that they are in the minority among people in general, I also know there is no way to tell the difference until it is too late. So caution is warranted, and when one decides to step across those formal bounds it is worth a critical examination.

      You hit it right on the nose. He was pushing the boundaries just by even entering the women's dorm building at all, to say nothing of when and after he arrived at her room. If he really had honorable, innocent intentions, and needed to discuss her paper, her grade, etc., then he should have just discussed it with her right there in the classroom (after class), or requested her to meet him in his office, or at any public place would do, such as that student lounge, that they referred to as the student union.

      It's also worth noting that, when he's in Topanga's dorm, he says (and I quote) "I'm your teacher, and I like you. And we're not talking about the paper". Where he knows nobody will disturb him, or has any preying eyes..
      Instead he was in her domain, with an open door, where her boyfriend could walk in at any time (which he did)
      So except for his behavior with the disregard for her answers, I saw it as him trying to act out that vagueness that he told she had in her paper.

While Cory's line was great and he was right and it was great that he stood up for her, I wish Topanga had gotten a chance to speak for herself, too.
    I've also seen a lot of people say this was bad because not only did he hit on her, but he admitted it to her fiancé, but even if Topanga was single, his actions would still be innapropriate and reprehensible.

In reality,some women in college do go through that believe it or not. I haven't myself but some do. Anyways,I loved how he acknowledged what he was doing whether or not he believes or the audience believes he's innocent. He simply said that it he knew it was wrong he just thought that it was the only thing he could do at the time. With the way the Savage brothers look, they could never believably play two people who aren't related.

    Seeing Fred Savage in this way showed his acting chops.. and it was no surprise this episode was part of the reason he was cast in a similar role for an episode of _Law And Order: SVU_ .
    Also, what Cory did is what any real man would have done..

    I cannot believe I didn’t realize that was Fred Savage! Well, it makes sense because I was a teen and I didn’t really know him by name of course. I thought this episode was very well done because while it tackled very sensitive and difficult subject matter the show didn’t use kid gloves. They faced the issue of sexual assault head on without any cutesy language or metaphors.

    “It was topanga who shooed Angela away” that statement is beyond inaccurate! She simply suggested she go ahead since they were going anyways and she figured it was gonna be a discussion about her paper so there was no need to keep Angela waiting around. Im sure if Angela had said I’ll wait for you I’m sure topanga wouldn’t of “shooed her away”. How dare he try to insinuate that she made her friend leave in order to be alone with him!

    The episode is so much more interesting realizing that Stuart is played by Fred Savage, Ben's (Cory) brother. It is a great play to put them in opposition with the older brother in the position of the young teacher.

    Everyone's discussing the seriousness of the issue, but no one's discussing the seriousness of the laws of physics being broken in this scene! There's no way Eric could've turned on the tape player, close his briefcase, and bust through the door in a fraction of a second, even with a helper. Shenanigans, I cry! SHENANIGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANS!
