You can use MUtility's latency delay to compensate for any m4l device delay by sandwiching the device between an MUtility that delays the signal, then another MUtility that compensates for the delay, and macro the parameters.
For anyone who is looking for an FL studio alternative, Frank Pole has a FREE patcher effect called Smoothe that also tries to be like Soothe, solid tool.
Right? It's like creating a bus in Pro Tools but with the benefit of applying it in between inserts. It would be nice if they made a dedicated device for this.
Plug-in makers hate him! This is genius. But damn my brain can barely keep up, I've only had Ableton for a little over a month and learned so much so fast. You're the man Val
Jus commenting to boost engagement I never want these vids to stop. I remember watching VR tutorials and streams almost 10 years ago. Feels like old times :)
its so inspirational for me as a music producer! Ableton is just one of the best music producecing applications. My transition from FL to ableton was, interesting... What you can make with ableton is SOOO amazing. Its like a fully reprogrammable music production device. AND you can use it as dj program for live performance. I heard that bitwig is nicer for this like of stuff if you want to have EVERYTHING to control it. I appreciate your work and music you made, much love and respect
A nerd is someone who's life is focused on computers and technology; but a geek is someone who's life is focused on computers and technology and likes it that way
your understanding of sound is just incredible. you itch the part of my brain that always wonders but doesnt have enough background knowledge to break down as well as you do
dude the way you seem to understand everything and how they interact with each other is incredible. if you were to ever do a video series on what are the most important fundamental knowledge and techniques are for Ableton or making music in a daw, it would be huge for me
As one of the exclusive FL users, the chain select video looked so cool but i couldn’t make it work in Patcher without it being a complete pain to set up… so I actually slapped together a VST that recreates the chain select and works in any DAW
I really hope vst software companies out there get in touch with Val, I'm sure he'll have tonnes of great ideas like these that could be cleaned up into amazing new software, awesome video as always!!
Alright this is insane. I keep getting your videos recommended in my sidebar but after this one I can't not subscribe and risk missing any video you ever make ever again
I've known of your existence since I saw your studio time vids and a video of you explaining your comeup and how you studied in Mannheim (literally random facts I remember form being a little 14yr old very inspired boy) and you never fail to inspire me even if i've moved to other genres and in general grown up. I still love your sound, the fact that you still explain sound design to us plebs and you never fail to fascinate me with your ideas! Thanks for all that has been and all that will.
remember doing this a while back in fl, definitely possible just kinda an eyesore, especially if you hate looking at wires on wires on wires. But nothing compares to the granular device I made using 16 instances of emergence, 2 stereo streams each, pitch linked to midi note, velocity to grain size and volume, etc.
I am so excited to see VR play with BitWig! I feel like he's gonna have a blast playing with all the modulators. Especially since he used Ableton he'll already know how to use it.
omg! last night I was literally making a soothe-ish clone in bitwig's grid and was soon going to make a video about it. treemonster -> FX grid with the zero crossings module -> modulator out modulating a notch filter's frequency. then used some envelope followers to control the gain reduction. then duplicated the chain into 8 band regions. it seems to work really well so far!!! but big cpu usage.
Don't worry the EQ compensation is not hacky and neither is the delay, that's literally what happens inside actual VSTs. You're actually doing everything the way you should, the only difference is that VSTs are optimized at a fundamental level to do one specific thing and (SHOULD) use less CPU as a consequence
Reminds me of when people started using dynamic EQ plugins some 10 years or more back and I just set Ableton's compressor assigned to very narrow and specific bandpass points. I also find the autofilter in Ableton tends to react faster than EQ8, and have used several of those in parallel over a mix each with their own compressor to give me a master or sound I needed. And if you're not mixing to another file or device (eg when I used DAT) just rendering will remove 99% of the latency/delay issues.
I love this technique! I would try using the eq in mid side mode and only substract frequencies in the mid channel. That way the mixes changes less but still have the benefits
Damn bro, I've been self taught Fruity Loops Studio for 10+ years. Honestly Ableton is hard for me to understand, but I love it's frequency shifter. Totally unmatched compared to all plugins. (Yes I've tested them, they dull and phase shift your sound usually by default)!
I definitely like your version better. Mainly because it is more aggressive and I am making melodic bass and dubstep. Soothe is also really nice, I might get it eventually but I think I would use it on more of my 128bpm tracks like electro or melodic electro.
at that resolution, trackspacer would probably do pretty similarly, esp if you had it sidechained from an eq’d signal that you couldn’t hear. and it’s much cheaper
one thing i've found handy for the delay on the envelope followers recently is using MUtility, which has an option to set delay and then optionally report it as latency! so you can just link up two of those to a macro and have the thing the envelope follower is applying to between them and then it works like really easy lookahead (and its extra nice since i think track negative delay in ableton causes all synced effects like auto pans in the project to be desynced) really enjoying the videos, especially all of the more complex racks, seeing them has given me so many ideas of what's possible with the rack tools that I didn't really know about before! so far I've made a like "microdynamics enhancer" and a couple variants of a multiband pan centering thing since I find myself manually MSpectralPanning hihats to the center on breaks and stuff all the time lmao
Bro. I love you, but I am going to straight up steal THIS and the 'camera goes in the ableton tutorial zone' thing. Both of these ideas reeek of a wrinkly brain! Love you man!
it's a respectable effort to recreate soothe with free tools only and it sounds great as well. however it should be mentioned that soothe2 has a great cpu performance, especially compared to soothe1, because that's often overlooked in these kinda suggestions. sure you can substitute the effect and its workflow a bit but knowing that it kills your cpu to do that too much makes you hesitate on applying the effect. that's why i'm glad i have soothe2. also it has internal lookahead and all that, already reacting to transients before they appear. you could surely set that up in bitwig or ableton as well, but it would only make your rack even longer and harder to understand. i'd say racks like this are a great starting point to find out if you like such effects and surely great practice for people who just love dsp and sounddesign, but at the end of the day, just chill and soothe2 when you make music :)
i’ve built something similar but routed the sidechain input using a compressor in monitoring mode post fx, super super useful!!! i also like delaying the wet chain pre eq to get a better attack, at the cost of nudging the track back by the same amount (edit nvm you did this later in the video lol)
WAVES Trackspacer does this dynamic sidechain thing (with a much lower resolution and less eq adjusts though) and you can get it on sale for 30 bucks, definitely useful to tuck vox into big pads, i mainly use it for singer vocal demos, to mix them into an already mixed instrumental, works like a charm!
his undersandings of sound design is incredible. he should make an album

Using the Gate effect's sidechain in monitoring mode, to trick Ableton into giving you a virtual patch-cable from anywhere to anywhere. Perfect
Right? It's like creating a bus in Pro Tools but with the benefit of applying it in between inserts. It would be nice if they made a dedicated device for this.
