This is not EDM it's IDM. EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) are two distinct genres within electronic music, each characterized by specific sonic qualities, compositional approaches, and cultural contexts. 1. **EDM (Electronic Dance Music)**: - **Sonic Characteristics**: EDM typically features repetitive beats, heavy basslines, and synthesizer-generated melodies. The focus is on creating energetic, danceable tracks with an emphasis on driving rhythms and catchy hooks. - **Composition**: EDM compositions often follow a formulaic structure, with build-ups, drops, and breakdowns designed to maximize impact on the dancefloor. Tracks are often shorter in duration to maintain energy levels and facilitate mixing in DJ sets. - **Cultural Context**: EDM has its roots in the late 20th-century rave and club culture, where DJs played a central role in creating immersive dance experiences. The genre has since evolved into a global phenomenon, with festivals, nightclubs, and streaming platforms serving as key platforms for its dissemination. 2. **IDM (Intelligent Dance Music)**: - **Sonic Characteristics**: IDM is characterized by intricate rhythms, unconventional time signatures, and experimental sound design. Artists often incorporate elements of glitch, ambient, and avant-garde music, creating complex sonic textures that reward attentive listening. - **Composition**: IDM compositions tend to be more abstract and cerebral, eschewing traditional song structures in favor of nonlinear arrangements and soundscapes. Tracks can vary significantly in length and complexity, with an emphasis on sonic exploration and innovation. - **Cultural Context**: IDM emerged in the 1990s as a reaction to the commercialization of electronic music, with artists seeking to push the boundaries of the genre and challenge listener expectations. The term "intelligent" reflects the genre's emphasis on intellectual engagement and artistic experimentation, contrasting with the more mainstream appeal of EDM. In summary, while both EDM and IDM are rooted in electronic music, they differ in sonic characteristics, compositional approaches, and cultural contexts. EDM prioritizes accessibility and dancefloor appeal, while IDM emphasizes experimentation and intellectual engagement, appealing to listeners with a penchant for sonic exploration and innovation.
@@t3ch_n0 It is imperative to underscore the fundamental significance of according due respect to the exertions and contributions of others within the sphere of discourse. Might not see this, but Virtual Riot, you inspired me so much growing up, and still now with your music, please never stop, you literally saved my life. thank you
You were going to die and VR personally rescued you? You owe this man a kidney! Encouraging someone to donate a kidney is a deeply personal decision, but consider the profound impact it could have on VR's life with a third kidney. Your act of generosity could mean the difference between VR having two or three kidneys. By donating your kidney, you have the power to give the gift of a third kidney to VR. It's an opportunity to make an extraordinary difference and showcase the true meaning of friendship through selfless acts of kindness and compassion.
@@Positive_Tea his music just put a lot of hope in me, and kept me motivated, and I've had huge bouts of depression and trauma throughout my life, so its a lot more impactful to me. :)
And by the way the melodic pattern that came out made me think that Rolando had this in the early 2000s to make Knights of the Jaguar(Or Isolee for Beau Mot Plage)
XLN has a really good sample library organizer plugin thingy too for those who dont know. Game changer. Thanks for coming down to Austin btw. Your set was the bees knees with extra cheese! And hilarious as always lol. much love
I’ve tried it and idk if I can justify buying it (honestly forget how much, prolly worth it tho tbh) but I always think back to how nice it was when I had the trial. Really interesting but intuitive design (Edit: it’s on sale for $77 usd, I may need it soon lol)
LIFE ROCKS - so fun to go out with your phone, capture weird things, come home and immediately plug them into a track. Few other plug-ins can offer something this unique. Great tips too!
I use Life all the time to get intersting perc / top loops. It's been such a big help. I hate doing perc stuff, because i'm really bad at it doing it by hand. This really, really helps me. Thanks for your tutorial :) I'll need to try the melodic stuff too.
I have Life and have tried lots of stuff. Made cool percs with my kid's voice, and we've started a project where I make the beats, and he's going to have the lead vocal. :) This plugin is so much fun!
Even the immediacy of recording something on the go and it being accessible directly in the plugin is so helpful. Credit to XLN they really do like to innovate!
With plugins like these which gives you "unique" and high quality grooves in seconds, i wonder what what will feel new and fresh in the next couple of years of electronic music... Cause now everyone can make cool grooves, as you said you basically made a fourtet tune in no time, but what comes after all this... Its cool to see how you can bend the plugins in new interesting ways but im more interested in what will feel new and exciting in electronic music when everyone has this under their fingertips... Anyhow wonderful vid as always, thanks
The sort of auto-categorization of slices really helps with making the randomly generated loops make sense, however I’m currently trying to expand on this idea with some ableton devices 😁
Wow this plugin seems really cool! I would probably use it all of the time if I could afford it! (lol) Edit: Watching this channel is like watching those reality shows with really wealthy people, it's fascinating seeing people have fun with stuff I can't afford.
idk if I'll ever take advantage of this, so I'll put it here in case someone else does. This could easily be used for an automatic/random hocket device, just by putting in a bunch of tonal one shots in the same key like he was saying, you could get some sick results.
if you ever see this, one of my favorite sounds EVER is your last "reverse" drop in the OG simulation. if you ever have the chance to break it down you would make my day sir
Urgghhh, Virtual Riot, grrraaattt video! It wassss like, uh, brrraaiiinsss, totally insane! Congratssss on making my zombie heart beat with excitement! 🧟♂️🎉
If you like Life, you should check out Orbit by ADSR. Its a MIDI sequencer like Life and you can even do some shenanigans with randomness. I think it would be right up your alley!
Suggestion for them at least to me would be to make the plugin syncable to the project tempo and have the sample length be measure in bars instead of seconds
Hey man! I was going to go to the Kemistry show in Fort Lauderdale but I couldn’t go. I was wondering how it went, and how you liked it. If I could recommend another place in SFL, iThink Amphitheater reaches a lot of ppl and ODESZA almost sold out last year.
Was watching this and googled Virtual Riot. Was shocked to learn that you have an almost identical name to me, which is Christian Michael White, and we’re both born on July 20th 1994 lol trippy
Hi, the only real limit that is not polyrhythmic. It would be enough to have the possibility of shortening the sequencer steps from 16 to 15 to create polyrhythms. It would be nice ! :(
I think my real critique of it is just the price. There isn't really a plugin touching it in terms of features, I can't justify paying $150 for it to myself yet. As I am writing this I just noticed its on sale for $89 😬 🥵
Life was a bit pricey for me, I use a combination of loopmix, koala sampler (to record and export to Ableton) and a Dillon Bastan m4l device called Coalescence, for the neural map stuff.
The only class I'm never late to

saw the video title and thought VR was about to start his lifestyle guru self-help series
Same. I was like this is gonna be effin awesome
I’m sorry. Hollow tips is a forever banger
Just now bought this plugin.. because of this video. Seems like a ton of fun!
How much was it????
I have it and can't drag and drop directly from the DAW. Does yours do this too?

thats one crazy plugin. random grooves will be fun to create
"Happy slicing and generative music making" ur the best bro fr
Tbh this is crazy! its actually generates so many ideas in seconds 😯
