      Your comment has nothing to do with it. The square is not abandoned, but every country and people has its own habits and mentality! This video was recorded at a time when 85% of Skopje and Macedonians went on vacation in other countries en masse. And that every summer from July to the beginning of October, Skopje is always abandoned. That was the pulse of the people of Skopje until the nonsense with COVID-19 started. We currently have open borders with our brothers in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia. Everything else is closed.

    What an underrated capital city with all these impressive buildings, statues and street lights and surrounding mountains! It also looks completely different from the other ex-Yuguoslav capitals, it's like a strange mix of Greek classicism mixed with American postmodernism plus lower typical Balcan stores and restaurants.

    • @Shako_Lamb
      @Shako_Lamb 2 роки тому +6

      Nearly all of the neoclassical architecture and monumentation in Skopje was just built in the last 15 years under the previous administration. A lot of it is historically dubious and seen as an attempt to create a more extravagant narrative than really belongs to now-North Macedonia, and multiple modernist buildings by significant architects were given low-quality quasi-neoclassical facades, but it nevertheless seems to be a very pleasant city to walk around in, and I would be glad to visit one day.
      The project in Skopje is called Skopje 2014 and it has been entirely halted and partially reversed, hence the number of unfinished-looking buildings in the video.

    Alexander the Great has nothing to do with this country (The only relation is that AFTER his campaign and conquest most part of modern North Macedonia was part of his new kingdom. In that kingdom was Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Bulgaria and many more as well . Should we call them North Macedonia as well?). If you take a look at the ancient Macedonian kingdom map (before Alexander's campaign), you will see that 90% of it was located to modern Greece. Like you said Alexander was speaking ancient greek and he convinced the other greek kingdoms and tribes to join him on his conquest. I would not talk that much about the history of Alexander when walking at this country. I am Greek but I could care less whether they steal our history or they need some way to unite their nation and have an identity. Clearly, people there had the problem of answering a question of "who we are?" But it is a bit sad, when a tourist/ vlogger walks there and the only thing he talks about is the history of Alexander the Great, which is obviously false history. Does this country has nothing more to offer, other than go and watch their statues of lies and talk about history that was not even originated from their country?

    • @Aleks_Ovski416
      @Aleks_Ovski416 3 роки тому

      A - you don't know what youre talking about
      B - the fact that you are upset someone is learning/speaking about Alexander the Great in North Macedonia shows that you don't actually care about Macedonia, its history or Alexander, what you care about is your nationalism and purity.
      C - " Clearly, people there had the problem of answering a question of "who we are?"" why? Because they don't say we are pure Slavs like the Greeks want us to be? We aren't barbarians who invaded and stole land like they picture us? because we and other scientist have come to the conclusion that our genes are from the Balkans and Hellenic and now we speak a Slavic language from the obvious Slavic element in the Balkans. Why are you racist and want to discriminate against Slavic speaking people? Why are you under the impression that language and history always go together?

    20:04 al those buildings are new and built trough a very controversial project called Skopje 2014 and was not really welcomed by the people in Skopje because it ruined the "real" look of the town. That is why people dont care about it and are prone to damage all this new buildings and monuments. We consider it to not be a typical architecture for the region and very kitsch.

Many foreign companies started to invest in the free zones, but unfortunately it bothered someone and broke up the Republic of Macedonia. They changed the flag, the name, they humiliated the Macedonian people. Let's hope that a new generation will come that will restore the name of the country, the dignity of the Macedonians, and Macedonia will flourish again.

    Present Day North Macedonia used to be part of the overall ancient Kingdom of Macedon. Fact! Also, the language does not necessarily mean that they are not related somehow to the Ancient Kingdom of Macedon. Hence, why their language is called Macedonian. You cannot call yourself Macedonian or speak the Macedonian language, without any reference to the Ancient Kingdom of Macedon. People simply don't get this. I get where Greeks come from, meaning, if you are Slavic, you cannot have relation to the Macedon Kingdom. That's not true. The Slavic literacy came only as a threat by the Greek Patriarchy expanding Greek speaking schools in that part of the region. In order not to fall under the influence of the Greek patriarchy, nor the Latin speaking language influence, Slavic literacy took offence by spreading with the help of the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius. History is not that black or white. Brother, I am from Northern California, Bay Area specifically, please hit me up sometimes and we can chat.

There is wonderful wilderness combined with a couple of structures nearby. It is slightly outside the town in a really nice secluded part. It is a place for real rest.
    Second is Bitola, my hometown. Quite a decent place. Couple of ancient history monuments and some newer history ones. Great for Mountainiering. Krusevo and Ohrid are a must too.
