- Skopje, North Macedonia | A day trip to Matka Canyon and Free City Walking Tour
Skopje has to be one of the most unique and unusual cities we have ever visited!
On our first day in Skopje we took advantage of the FREE city walking tour. We think taking a walking tour is essential when first arriving in a new city. There is always so much to learn and you are immediately connected with a local who can usually give you some good advice for enjoying your trip. While we enjoyed learning about the rich history of Macedonia, we were a tad more excited to head out of the city and back into nature! If you're in Skopje, you cannot miss a trip to Matka Canyon. This peaceful paradise is only a short 30 minutes bus ride outside of the city. The canyon offers many activities such as hiking trails, kayaking, and a boat ride to Europe's deepest underwater cave, Vrelo Cave. After a quick brunch at one of the restaurants on site, we opted for the serene boat ride and a tour of the cave for just $8 a person. This was definitely a highlight of our time in Macedonia!

Please refer to the country as Republic of North Macedonia. It's illegal to call it Macedonia! According to the bilateral Prespes agreement, Greece allowed them to use a similar name to the Hellenic Makedonia under the condition that they would not claim any connection to the ancient Hellenic Kingdom of Makedonia.

Next time you visit Macedonia you should go to Vergina, Pella and the capital of Macedonia, Thessaloniki. Maybe you should read history before you use the term Macedonia for a country that, according to the recent Prespa agreement, is named North Macedonia and not Macedonia.

Ps: Shkup was the biggest Albanian city until 1910 when the great powers decided to give it to Serbs later Yugoslavia.
