Stuck On A Train For A Week (and loving it) | North America journey on VIA RAIL's luxury cars | Pt 1

  • We had an amazing opportunity to travel across Canada by train on VIA Rail's Toronto to Vancouver route on "The Canadian". This is Canada's Amtrak equivalent. For those of you wanting to take this scenic journey, the video and the following details are intended to help provide more information on the trains and special deals that may come up. Travelling by train is indeed a pleasant, scenic experience which I hope you would be able to experience. (Please note that I am not associated with VIA Rail.)

Traveling by train can be pricier and requires more time than other conventions of travel, but it is a luxury of a time gone by. In my case, it was worth every minute; being able to experience the scenic journey, attentive service by the crew members, and getting back into the art of conversation and building friendships (something that we had the opportunity to do with the absence of connectivity for parts of the journey).
    Happy Traveling :-)

Wayne and fellow passengers are very thoughtful and kind. I will love to listen to Ed and Gary's experiences/stories. The midnight snack crew = fun group. The Via Rail team is so professional and approachable. Love your Mom's sense of adventure. Love your attention to details. Hugs, hugs, hugs to everyone.

I have great memories of taking this train as a kid. There are so many different landscapes in Canada. That dome car is wonderful, especially once you get to Alberta (either the Edmonton or Calgary route). And you can meet people from around the world.

I congratulate you for taking your mom on a Train Ride. Now that was to me very heart touching. It made me think of my belated mom, whom I would have love for me & her to take a train ride. Though my mom is d ed ceased!!! Congratulations on your time with your mom & new friends & old ones on your train ride. Beautiful time is more than anyone can imagined!!! Those memories will always be fresh daily to you. The foods on train were amazing & looked very tasty & enjoyable!!! God Blessed you Tim and your mom. These videos are marvelous & enjoyable!!!!🙏🙏🙏

I was a bit concerned about the train trip at the beginning because it was a long journey and wasn't sure what is available on board. Those concerns were quickly put to rest after the first night on the train. With no internet for most of the trip, people started conversing and many friendships were made. Definitely a highly recommended experience. We were lucky that we caught a black Friday sale that gave us about a 60% off the fare. Otherwise it would be beyond our reach for a vacation 🙂

Oh Stephen, you and your wife are going to have such an amazing time. January would be fantastic because you get to see the snow outside while you're warm inside enjoying a nice meal or can I warm bed looking out the window. One thing to note, is that it is almost expected that the train will be late arriving at the destination. So just make sure that if you book the hotel where you're going to be arriving that it is flexible. It's almost an exception if they arrived on time. We were delayed by a day, but we certainly enjoyed the extra day on the train.

That was absolutely thrilling! I love trains and I love good food , so this was perfect. Those VIA Rail trains are so much nicer than Amtrak. I haven't been on a train since January but I am going to Santa Barbara on the train for my birthday next week so I'm pretty excited even if we lost our regular dining meals in favor of prepackaged airline food basically. But I'll just be glad to be back on the train. I do hope to be able to ride VIA Rail some day. Thank you for sharing this with us, definitely looking forward to part 2.

Hi Tim. I enjoyed this train ride video part 1. So far, the food looked awesome. The prime rib was to die for. The deserts were great. Carrot cake looked yummy. The short visit off the train to purchase that wine was a great idea and to share it with good company. I’ve rode on Amtrak in the states but nothing like what you’ve done in this four day trip. Amtrak, especially short trips only offers maybe some salads, sandwiches, or maybe some donuts. And then you have to pay for it. It seemed like your four day trip was all meals were included in the trip. Maybe I’m wrong though. The scenery on your trip was enticing. Your bed bunk and restroom facilities were complete. Your guests were awesome. Looking forward to part 2.

Hi Robert, really enjoying train travel from this trip. Yes, the food was included (and the staff do tend to provide bottles of wine here and there) and they were certainly quite generous to the point we were all a little bit rounder afterwards. I really enjoy the Amtrak as well but never tried an overnight stay (this was my first ever)... this 4 day trip ended up taking 6 days with the delays but great thing was that no one minded. Thank you again and keep well!

I love this video and I always wanted to try the Canadian. My parents and I traveled on Amtrak's Coast Starlight, California Zephyr, and Southwest Chief (last year was the 150th anniversary of the completing of the transcontinental railroad in USA) last October and it was such a good experience, and the good food was one of the highlights. However, it seems the cuisine (including welcoming champagne and hors d'oeuvres) and atmosphere on the Canadian's dining car are even better than on Amtrak. Has the Canadian resumed its service and has the dining service been affected? Amtrak is cutting its long distance trains to 3 times a week starting October, and its dining cars are no longer serving passengers due to COVID-19 (only take outs), and I think most if not all on board meals will be replaced with airplane style food (so disappointing) I'm so glad we had the train experience last October.
