I have a 2013 3.5L 181,200 miles. Great, reliable vehicle. No major issues. Brake Booster replaced around 170,000. Be cautious of the water pump as it runs off the timing chain. Thinking staying on top of coolant/radiator maintenance and regular oil changes (I do Mobil1 every 10k miles) may increase longevity of the water pump…I’ve not had any issues from that standpoint
So I have two ford edge now. I have kept lots and lots of used car , all brands. Nothing impressed me more than the 2010 ford edge, bought 154000 miles now after driving another 20000 miles and no issues. I went out bought another 2011 ford edge with 130 k miles. So, I have done regular maintenance all fluid changes, coolant, transmission, engine. Drives like new. So here is my 50 cents, older model ford edge is the most under appreciated suv ever. This thing is better than a Toyota better than a honda. I am not lying, it is. Why edges fail, because people don't do simple maintenance and keep running till they end. So go out look for a ford edge from people who care about their cars, edge will never disappoint. Thanks for making this video, your research is spot on.
I think the problem with coil packs is not changing your spark plugs in time. I have 220K miles on my 2008 Edge 3.5L & never had a problem with a coil pack.
I’m glad it helped 👍 Make sure the title is clean and also get it looked at by a mechanic before you buy any used car. You’re not looking for perfection, but you don’t want any major problems. Also, when I buy a used car I try to screen the previous owner. I made a video on how to do that. You may be able to check the maintenance history before you even go look at the vehicle. Check out this video, it can help a lot. Good luck 🍀 ua-cam.com/video/uADJ-f39pvE/v-deo.htmlsi=_vcMQd7iWFq2qUNk
I have a 2015 Edge with the v6, no turbo. No problems up untill now, have no heat inside the cab, cool not hot, so I will figure this out, but so far so good. Thanks MJ
I have a 2016 with 3.5L. Just over 60,000, having some issues with parking breaks?? Two lights and a bell keep going off.. And two separate messages to the left. Is this an expense repair???
@@TheRabidfox11 Depends on what you consider expensive 🤷♂️ I found a video with a 2017 that has a similar problem. In this video there was a problem with corrosion getting in the wiring harness near the rear brakes. In that case replacing the harness solved the problem. So probably a few hundred dollars. That doesn’t mean it will 100% be the same repair or price as your vehicle…. But- perhaps it will be. The only way to know for sure it’s to take it to a good technician and have them look at it. I hope that helps : ) ua-cam.com/video/_MnF9RqgxfM/v-deo.htmlsi=-mOOJfr8oEKlXWwF
I have a navy blue 2011 Ford Edge limited w/ chrome 20" wheels and chrome trim. 6 cylnder. Milage just hit 130,000 and still runs like new. I keep it showroom quality. I have had it 3 years and the only problem that i have had was the backup camera and my panoramic sunroof. The sunroof issue was solved when i got a new battery. The rubber is off track slightly on the right side. It just needs to realigned and greased and it will be fine. Overall a great car. I love it.
Owed a 2008 SEL, transmission went bad at 130000 miles. Had normal issues like all cars, but was my most reliable car for 10 years. No issues with the panoramic roof. Other big problem was my AC and spongee brakes. Would definitely buy another
I just bought a 2013 with a 3.5 V6 motor all wheel drive and the thing is just a rocketship 150,000 miles paid 7000 for it. The only thing it needed when I bought it was an alignment and an oil change, and it’s like brand new whoever owned it before me took like extremely good care of it, the ride is great and I’m a big guy and it is a lot of room for such a little car. I love it.
I have one. 2008 - 3.5 SEL FW. 210 miles. I drive it for 2 years now (32K). I had to replace the radiator fans (died). And I rebuild from suspension. Spent ~700$ for parts and 12 hours of a single person. A good thing to know is FWD doesn't have differential - true. But it also shares the oil with the transmission. So whatever you do with the axis, just fill eplace the transmission oil. 2008 has an awful light. Breaking pads go a bit fast-ish compared to other cars I owned. My doesn't have a hole for fuel pump replacement (pity). Interior is a bit rough-ish... But it's comfortable to drive. Simple suspension - easy to repair, but it also requires you to have a comfortable wheel for a comfortable drive. Cheap wheels make it feel like there are no wheels.
I've got a 2011 Ford Edge Limited with the 3.5L engine, car runs great. I got it for $6500 with 130K miles on it. So far I've driven it to 165K miles with not many issues.
I have a 2013 Edge SEL AWD V6 3.5ltr. and it's awesome! A solid, quiet ride, good handling and all around great vehicle. Dislikes are the sync system and I have had to replace the front struts three times! Fuel mileage isn't the best, but that wasn't a factor for me. I definitely have the water pump checked often and do all the scheduled maintenance.
I just bought, (almost 3 months ago), a 2013 Edge Sport AWD w/ 3.7, all options, w/ 135,000 mi. It's a Canadian model with the black on black, w/ black-out option, and it Looks Outstanding, drives and handles Great. That's not saying it doesn't have an issue, (HVAC Primary vent doors Actuator, and uneven brake wear, poss. due to bad ABS), or that there is not risks that come with buying one, but no matter what happens I'm planning on keeping it. Because I Love it!
We had a 2014 CX9 until 179k miles with the Duratec 37. That's the one you would find in a Edge Sport. Terrific engine. Only replaced coil packs and plugs and alternator, and radiator fan, one of the motors died. For the 3.5 and 3.7 beware of the leaking water pump that in internal. Its will leak coolant into the Motor oil and grenade the engine.
Good research and report! I have a 2019, ST with 2.7L motor with AWD. ST has a 5,000 built-in towing hitch, which I use for a boat trailer. The AWD S mode is cool when pulling the boat out of the lake. I love watching the intelligent AWD meter automatically engage all 4 wheels.
I own a 2013 Edge Limited with the 3.5 I have about 115000 so far. Good to hear the high mileage potential. I love having the Sony stereo with factory amp. Sounds amazing but I don't think its available in base models. Thanks for all the digging.
I have a 2017 w/2.0 Ecoboost. Pretty good overall except at 61,000 I had to replace the engine because of a cracked block. TSB#19-2172. 1,000 miles out of warrantee and no help from FORD so I spent $6,000 plus for repair.
2011 SeL 3.5 no major issues just a abs pump replacement and batteries. Runs like a top bought at 25k miles now has110k I may buy another with low miles and keep truck in I love it.
I have an 11 limited. I dont like those awd models. Its just more things to break. Paid $5000 for it last year. 162k. I love how it drives. And love the extras it has! My favorite part of the car is the sunroof and the stereo! I did replace the panoramic sunroof sliders (common problem) Did it myself. Needed a new front wheel bearing. Also did myself. Right now the only issue is a evap small leak code. And sometimes i get a message on the dash "check fuel inlet" or something like that. (common problem). Im planning to replace the purge valve. See if that helps
Change your gas cap and charcoal canister purge valve. I had the same problem with my 2006 Ford Freestar. The purge valve had a hairline crack in the plastic, and the hose which ran from the fuel tank purge valve to the charcoal canister had a small crack where it goes into the fuel tank purge valve. The shop ran a smoke test, and said there were no leaks. The fuel tank purge valve on the Freestar is buried inside of the rear wheel well, and is covered by the rear wheel well cover. The only way you can see smoke is to remove the wheel well cover while running the smoke test. I also changed the gas cap because the rubber seal around the cap looked like it was starting to deteriorate. My Freestar is approaching 200,000 miles, and no issues. I keep up on the maintenance.
Got a 14 limited awd 3.5L. It has 99k on it. Doing coils/plugs on my own. Coolant/brake flush soon. Only issue is an oil leak on the timing cover. Change the oil every 5k.
2013 3.5 v6 awd transfer case leaking. There's no drain pug. Had to replace with the upgrade model. 3000.00 Canadian. BUT it's been a great car specially in the snow.
My 2013 Edge 3.5 SE has 227K miles; I inherited it with 224K. The engine runs like new, does not leak or burn oil. Only issue is that 3 times, without warning, the brake pedal becomes soft and goes down to the floor - it has to be pressed very firmly for the car to stop. Ford changes the brake booster for this known issue but many owners say it does not fix the problem and that the culprit is the ABS module, which is expensive and Ford does not replace under their customer satisfaction agreement. The water pump location worries me because it is inside the motor and will damage the engine if it leaks. The car rides nicely, feels solid, and is powerful.
@@MJ100k I have not taken it yet because I've read several posts from owners that changed the booster and the same problem continued because the issue seems to be the ABS module. My booster does not exhibit signs such as hissing sound or gradually sinking pedal when at a stoplight, etc. Thanks for the reply, friend.
2009 Ford Edge with 160,000 miles. 2WD, 6 Cylinder, 3.5L. Bought it 1 year old with 9,000 miles. It's a beast! My major repairs have been axle, tie rods, shocks, struts all in the 85,000 - 125,00 miles range. Interesting to see your video and learn it truly is a good car. Keeping it, but in the market for a newer car and looking at Ford Edges again. Came across your video researching if the newer models are as reliable. Was looking at 2021-2023. Any input or links to share on this?
If I were you I’d get a 2015 Ford Edge SE trim (or any trim without the pano roof) because, according to my research, 2015 the last year they used the 3.5 liter engine. If you want more info on the current Edges engine - the 2.0l eco boost - Google - Ford 2 liter eco boost common problems… Then you’ll understand why I recommend sticking with the 3.5 liter lol Just watch the water pump on the 3.5 engine and you’ll be fine. One this channel … once a model and year range are determined… we use a 3 step process that includes the following: 1- Select - selecting the best year range and powertrain for you.. Which in this case is the 2015 3.5 liter 2- Screen - screen the previous owner(s) by looking at the car fax for free online. Here’s a couple videos of how I do this. ua-cam.com/video/N_Ba-OtMJp4/v-deo.htmlsi=IAWdpqEMH9pZ6iv- ua-cam.com/video/uADJ-f39pvE/v-deo.htmlsi=pDsOMMDmdVFPhdj2 3- inspect - have a mobile mechanic go to the lot and check it out before you buy it. You’re not looking for perfection, but you must avoid huge problems… Excessive rust, accidents ect. Car lots will sell you anything. Anything small that the mechanic finds can be used as leverage to lower your offer to the dealership. Have fun shopping. Let me know if you have any questions 👍
My Taurus has the same 3.5 engine, that engine is rock solid. 14 years old and still purrs like a kitten. Unable to get an Edge, check out a 6th Gen. Taurus. Such great advice in the video!
I just looked up some numbers, and it appears you are correct 👍 I’m seeing high mileage examples for sale online… several over 300k ! I might have to do a video on this Taurus 🤔💯🛠️
@@MJ100k That be great! The only things that needed repair under the hood was a high-pressure power steering line and an oxygen sensor. All which happen after a 100k miles.
Just bought a 2016 Edge with the 3.5. It replaced a 2008 Ford Taurus X with 225,000 mi. Never had a problem with the engine except the AC compressor at 200k. Hoping for similar reliability with the Edge.
I imagine the number of edge over 200k miles is more a function of how many were made than how well they were made. Or at least volume plays a major role
@@fredbarnes196 Good point - I think it plays a role. For a thought experiment I calculated the number of vehicles per 100,000 sold in the US for each year of the Mazda 3 first generation. It’s in my video - What is the best year Mazda 3. The Mazda 3 numbers were similar to the same year Honda Civic (a known reliable vehicle) conversely - I looked up the number of vehicles over 200,000 for Audis of that year range… And the number over 200,000 miles was zero ! lol So I think there is something to the calculation. - Number of vehicles over 200,000 miles per 100,000 vehicles sold that year. I haven’t done the calculation often because it seems like people get bored from the math 🤷♂️
@@MJ100k True, people zone out with numbers. When buying a used car I went with the metric "cost per expected mile left on the car". Try explaining that in a video even though it is simple!

I have a 2013 SEL with the V6 that I bought brand new. It just turned 236,000 miles today. I am at the point where I need to make a decision. The AWD transfer case (?) is leaking and needs to be replaced (quoted $2600) and she needs new tires (would be the third set - only buy OEMs) at $1500. The suspension is getting a bit rugged and I don't know how much it might be to tighten everything up. Otherwise I love this vehicle and would keep her forever but my daughter hates the car, says the AC smells. Priced a "new" 2024 at $38K and it still has that truck-like ride. I have a 2013 3.5 l v6. It has 155,000. I bought it at 86,000. It was well cared for. And I have maintained it well too. I never had a problem with it until last week a coolant leak. My mechanic said the water pump is leaking. Because it's powered by the timing chain it would be over 3k to fix. But wait there's more...there is a second leak near the transmission. He said he has never seen leak there before. I would need to go to Ford to fix that. He told me it's not worth fixing. It would likely be over 6k to fix both leaks. I'm sad I really like my Edge. Sorry to hear that… I would get a second opinion if I were you. Believe it or not… Occasionally mechanics will give you a super high quote when they don’t feel like doing a hard job (hoping that you’ll say no) …. and that water pump is a pretty hard job.

Not only that, but the fact it can leak in the engine and nuke it is the biggest thing, I'm currently doing the job right now but another problem is the secondary timing chain broke as well, so I don't know if this engine is toasted or what, guess I'll find out

This was my mom car on first, after that, she brought it to the mechanic shop and they said it needed a new engine because of the noise in the timing chain. I have and love a 2017 Ford Edge. Have 92k miles, and just found out that I either get a new motor or a new car. What do you know about the coolant getting into the 2nd cylinder and gluing the sparkplug to the motor. Removing it cracks the motor.
I liked the video. I have a 2013 Lincoln MKX with the 3.7 V/6. Isn't this basically the same motor ? Do you know on average miles when the water pump goes up, because that looks like a real expensive repair? Also every thing on the motor looks like It would be a costly repair. Hope this motor holds up as good as the 3.5.
Yes the 3.7 is a very similar Duratec motor. The transverse versions of the 3.7 are also affected by the water pump concern in the 3.5L A very rough estimate would be 1,500-2000$ When will it happen: ? IDK - there was a class action lawsuit that was dismissed that claimed it happened as low as 50k. Ford says it’s tested to 150k… So idk when it could happen exactly. See the section on water pumps: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cyclone_engine Some people think that changing the fluid with OEM fluid often and checking the coolant level weekly could help to see a signal it’s going out… But if it fails it could damage the engine - so if you’re planning on keeping the vehicle for a few years… I would make plans to get that water pump replaced if it’s original. You might as well replace the timing chain and any seals in that area while you’re in there.
@@MJ100k Thanks, Ill keep a eye on the coolant & oil. Ford should be sued for making a motor like that, but I know GM & Chrysler have done It too. I didn't know until I bought It & a friend said I better hope the water pump never goes up

Do not check or change the fluid unless the unit was been submerged in water. The only exception is if the unit is operated in sand in high temperatures - in which case the fluid should be changed every 20,000 miles. So unless you drive in hot sand areas.. The Delaership did not recommend changing the PTU because it’s considered a lifetime fluid that doesn’t require changing. I’m not saying I agree with the concept of lifetime fluids… But that’s what the manual says… and also why nobody at the dealership told you to change it.

Nice 👍 Yes, I think more frequent oil changes and coolant drain and fills (with OEM fluid) may help extend the life of the water pump.
You're pushing it with that 10k interval. Better off doing it at 5k and its so easy you can do it yourself and save $$$.
Thank you 👍 Yeap, the Edge is very underrated 💯
I think the problem with coil packs is not changing your spark plugs in time. I have 220K miles on my 2008 Edge 3.5L & never had a problem with a coil pack.
Interesting theory. You could be right 👍 Thanks for sharing this 💯
This is just the video I needed. Checking one out tomorrow, was nervous about the high-ish mileage but now not so much!

So whatever you do with the axis, just fill
eplace the transmission oil.

Nice 👍 So did they replace the brake booster?

If I were you I’d get a 2015 Ford Edge SE trim (or any trim without the pano roof) because, according to my research, 2015 the last year they used the 3.5 liter engine. If you want more info on the current Edges engine - the 2.0l eco boost - Google - Ford 2 liter eco boost common problems… Then you’ll understand why I recommend sticking with the 3.5 liter lol Just watch the water pump on the 3.5 engine and you’ll be fine.
One this channel … once a model and year range are determined… we use a 3 step process that includes the following:
1- Select - selecting the best year range and powertrain for you.. Which in this case is the 2015 3.5 liter
2- Screen - screen the previous owner(s) by looking at the car fax for free online. Here’s a couple videos of how I do this.

ua-cam.com/video/uADJ-f39pvE/v-deo.htmlsi=pDsOMMDmdVFPhdj2
3- inspect - have a mobile mechanic go to the lot and check it out before you buy it. You’re not looking for perfection, but you must avoid huge problems… Excessive rust, accidents ect. Car lots will sell you anything. Anything small that the mechanic finds can be used as leverage to lower your offer to the dealership.
Have fun shopping. Let me know if you have any questions 👍

The transverse versions of the 3.7 are also affected by the water pump concern in the 3.5L A very rough estimate would be 1,500-2000$
When will it happen: ? IDK - there was a class action lawsuit that was dismissed that claimed it happened as low as 50k. Ford says it’s tested to 150k… So idk when it could happen exactly.
See the section on water pumps:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cyclone_engine
Some people think that changing the fluid with OEM fluid often and checking the coolant level weekly could help to see a signal it’s going out…
But if it fails it could damage the engine - so if you’re planning on keeping the vehicle for a few years… I would make plans to get that water pump replaced if it’s original. You might as well replace the timing chain and any seals in that area while you’re in there.

They quoted me $2,500 so did it myself. 2015 3.5l SE and water pump started leaking at about 100k. Upgraded to a Melling HV oil pump while I was in there. Timing components all looked great and tight so no changes there. Did a new serpentine belt, tensioner as well while I had it off.
Very hard job to do at home. Took me 5 days. But total cost was about $600. They would’ve charged $3k for the other repairs as well so saved $2,400
@@RevelationThree20 Wow Nice job 👍
I have a 2011 sel model. It has 150k kms on it. My Edge has been a pretty reliable vehicle. I have done all regular maintenance and change the ptu fluid myself every 2nd oil change.
@@Riezigwhat is ptu?
At 355 thousand miles, putting 1600 in it would be no biggie. Better than a car payment!
@@marionhall9641 New cars are so expensive - rehabbing an old one makes more sense than ever 👍
Love my 2014 sport awd but notice a slight vibration between 55 and 60 otherwise smooth ride. New Michelins didn't cure it
Hmmm, it probably something that rotates if it only happens at a certain speed range. Maybe- rims, rotors, axels, torque converter
The same problem I have. Brand new tires and twice I made a wheels balance. And no charges (
CHANGING THE REAR SPARK PLUGS IS A VERY BIG PAIN AND TIME CONSUMING. ALL 3.5 + 3.7 ENGINES. FINIS PAX
I have a 2014 3.5 FWD bought it 55k miles and now I have 105k on it . Purrs like a kitten.. only thing I changed was a $40 sensor. Im nervous about the waterpump though
Me too lol If you plan on keeping it another 100k… I’d go ahead and change it. 💯
What about the 2.7 engine
My research shows that the 3.5 liter is more likely to achieve high mileage.
@@MJ100k I’m looking into getting a sport 2017 2.7l it has about 73k miles does it seem like a smart idea? The 3.5 versions don’t have all the specs I desire
@@Brykeise25 what specs are you referring to?
Great content
Thank you 👍
I have a 2013 sel awd , bought new did all the maintenance on time , p t u went out 65 k and then tranny went out 95 k , is there any one who has a awd edge and their p t u has not had to be replaced ? The Ford service center never said a word about the p t u service.
@@ChrispyCritter-1 I looked in the service manual for the 2013 Ford Edge
www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/13edgom4e.pdf
On page 375 it says that PTUs filled with synthetic fluid (which I’m assuming yours has) are considered lubricated for life.
My 2013 blew up, had a Ford manufactory engine recall & Ford Motor Co would not fix it, his garage manager quit over it!!
I believe the recall you’re referring to was for the 2 liter Edge, not the 3.5 liter
I'm too familiar with the 3.5 engine and the waterpump that located inside. I agree it a good engine but if that waterpump fails it will put coolant into the oil it's just a very short matter of time.
If I bought a 3.5 liter, I’d go ahead and replace the water pump before it fails. I’d treat it like a timing belt interval. New one every 75-85k.
Mine failed, even with a Ford Recall & Ford Motor Co known issue to replace the motor, Conway's Motor Co of Bardstown, KY refused to replace my motor on my 2013 the garage manager quit over this!!
@@jeannie5389 I’m sorry to hear that. Sometimes you can complain directly to the OEM if a dealer refused to cover a warranty or recall. Are you referring to the recall for the fuel pulse damper that can leak ? That one was for the 2.0 liter turbo engine
2014-01-06
Recall no.
14V002000
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Edge vehicles manufactured from September 2, 2010, through April 25, 2013, and equipped with 2.0L engines. The fuel line pulse damper metal housing may crack as a result of an improper manufacturing process. A cracked fuel line pulse damper housing may result in a combination of fuel odor, weepage, or a continuous leak while the fuel system is pressurized.
@@jeannie5389 Did you have a 2 liter engine or a 3.5 liter? I believe the recall you’re referring to was for a potentially leaking fuel pulse damper on the 2 liter engine.
I looking at the saturn vue 2004-2007 honda engine someone told me 2006 2.2 engine is good so i dont know lol
Interesting - I looked up the Saturn Vue- looks like it does have the Honda v6 as an option. That v6 does have a timing belt though. I’m not hearing good things about the transmissions in Vues.. but they do offer a manual … so IDK. Generally- I think that if you want a Honda engine you might as well buy a Honda lol I’d probably get a Honda CRV, Ford Edge or Togota Rav 4 over a Vue.
@@MJ100k Honestly, I prefer the vue if it has a manual, those things are light since they're made of fiberglass

I was thinking of doing a video on the Ford Explorer lol I’ve been seeing them everywhere lately
ALL 3.5 + 3.7 FORD ENGINES HAVE THE WATER PUMP BUILT INTO THE ENGINE. IT TAKES ABOUT 11-12 HOURS TO REPLACE AT AROUND $2000. ANY TURBO CHARGED ENGINE TURNS OUT TO BE JUNK. OVERTAXING A LITTLE MOTOR TO PRODUCE BIG MOTOR RESULTS, IS A DISASTER. FINIS PAX
Not all.
I would not have one because of the internal water pump i think that will make people buy something eiles 2000 dollarwater pump change out is not good
Every used vehicle has common problems. You can chose the vehicle with the common problem that you don’t mind dealing with 🤷♂️ One guy on here changed his own water pump on one of these… Took him all weekend… but he did it 💯
Well, you glossed over the poorley designed 3.5 water pump issue. It will cost $1400 to $1600 to get it replaced. Worse, if it leaks, coolant will mix with the engine oil, and you know what that means. YIKES!
@@stuuuporman With the cost of a new car averaging 45,000$ The prospect of buying a good used car for 7 or 8,000$ and later replacing a water pump for 1,400$ all of a sudden.. doesn’t seem so bad 🤷♂️ One guy on here, took a weekend … did the repair himself and saved a grand 😉 Other used cars can blow whole engines or transmissions for 4-6000$ 👀
“NONE” is the best year since that engine has to be pulled out to change a bad water pump. Serious engineering failure. It appears they can go for a long time, but it’s not if, it’s when. Thanks for the info though, they are nice otherwise.
Thanks for your comment. The water pump job is difficult - however, my research is showing that the engine does not need to be removed from the vehicle to complete the repair. It has to be dropped down a few inches to access the crankshaft pulley bolt. But the entire engine does not need to be removed.
Here are several videos showing the repair below. Some people in the comments were able to complete the repair themselves. But yes, it is a difficult repair. 💯
