Nice video. I have seen Gloomhaven show up as top 1 solo game in a few lists on UA-cam lately. Personally, I struggle to see how GH can be a viable solo game when the setup is so long! And the enemy bookkeeping is pretty cumbersome as well. I would never even consider playing GH without using the unofficial app which has since been unpublished upon Isaac Childres' request. If you can justify the setup and bookkeeping time, the gameplay is definitely original, and the game is full to the brim of content. At least it makes a great solo digital game if you enjoy the card play. BTW, this is the same reason why I don't consider Middara, my favorite game of all time, a viable solo game: too much to keep track of.
When I first got Gloomhaven I found the biggest issue regarding setup time came from sorting through the tiles. To allieviate this all my room tiles are in an alphabetical according folder. Then I have a wooden organizer for all the rest of the components. This drastically reduces the setup time. I've never used an app for the book keeping as I've found I really enjoy it. However, on a side note, Childres didn't actually demand the app shut down. The timeline went more like this: - Isaac releases the assets to the community to use on a non-commercial basis. - Nate develops a non-commercial app with those assets. - Nate decides that he is doing too much work to not be compensated and goes commercial. - Isaac and Nate enter a post-hoc licensing agreement to allow Nate’s commercial use of Isaac’s assets. - Isaac reaches out to Nate about extending the commercial license and developing an app for FH. - Nate declines to develop a commercial app for FH, but potentially does so as a negotiation tactic as he clearly expected a response. - Isaac finds a different commercial developer and ends the commercial relationship with Nate. Nate can close the app or, once again, work under the non-commercial availability of the assets. -Nate decides to close the app.

I am just saying that it's not a quick setup nor light on bookkeeping, so people should consider that before buying it for solo play. As a consumer, my relation is with Isaac to which I paid money for the game, not with Nate who provided a free app to me. Isaac not being able to find an accommodation, which resulted in the app not being available to me anymore, made my experience of the game much worse. The possible future availability of a more official alternative helps me very little until that actually materializes. I wasn't even aware of Gloomhaven Helper ever being officially licensed, if a post-hoc was indeed granted and subsequently pulled, this makes all this drama even less necessary and the move even less friendly to the GH community.
I still prefer the original Nemesis over Lockdown. There was one cool new mechanic in Lockdown which allowed the new aliens that come with it, but overall the original game was just a much better experience.
Wow I wholeheartedly disagree with this. Lockdown gives you a small but meaningful added level of control which was my biggest problem with Nemesis. Still feel like Lockdown is flawed but it’s better, IMHO.

Very nice overviews, but I'd rather hear more about what you think of the mechanics in the games and what you like or don't like about the game, than that you show random (locked) cards from the game. It's more interesting to hear a short review than looking at random components. And especially locked components from legacy games. ;)
Great video. Obviously you know your stuff and you put a lot of effort in filming these: one tip: try to avoid "filler words" such as "you know" - at times it gets distracting. Some parts don't look super prepared, maybe befora launching in a video, make a quick bullet list of the 10 to 15 things that you want to talk about.
Just for note, NIamh is gaelic and pronounced Neev. (Not a criticism as some Irish/Welsh/Celtic words look completely bonkers. It's my niece's name.) Great vid 😁
Thanks, Yves! That insert is from the absolutely fantastic custom insert company, Daedalus. Unfortunately they went out of business a little while ago. However, for many of my other games I've acquired Folded Space inserts which are more light weight and just as functional. Would you still recommend Root solo, with the cloackwork expansion, even for someone who has never played Root yet? I just got the base game, and would love to solo it with the expansion, but i'm afraid it would add too much to the learning curve already high
It will definitely be a fairly steep learning curve. Root by itself is already a tough learn initially. Clockwork is no more difficult than the base game but learning them both at the same time could be a challenge. That being said, if you focus on maybe learning one faction for you and one faction for the Clockwork...play them a few times...and then move on to another...that could be a viable way to slowly figure it all out. Once you get past the learning curve it's a fantastic experience!
honestly, I wish the player models in Tiny Epic Dungeons were printed meeples like all of the bad guys are. They could have even done the shaped ones with the colored images on them. The miniatures mixed with meeples messes up the game aesthetics for me. We just end up using standard colored meeples for the characters and the minis sit in the expansion box and never get used.
I can definitely see your point. From my view, though, I love the contrast of the minis and the meeples. Similar to Spirit Island with the plastic vs the wooden pieces.

Was the opposite experience for me. I ended up selling my lockdown stuff already. Plenty happy with the original game and Aftermath here.
